He’s good at what he does

Yeap, It's amazing *___*
Just one?
👏👏👏
Yes, it's amazing
This version sounds almost taunting, like the spirits of Notre dame singing the tale of Frollo. Almost like they are torturing him for his deeds after his death for eternity
That's an interpretation I can get behind!
Almost as though he cannot escape the eyes of Notre Dame
You're so right!
True.
Sounds lit
"Who is the monster, and who is the man?" Decades later, and the message of this song is still relevant. In fact, the original story goes back to the 1830s. This is what makes something a *timeless* classic.
Oh fuck
I gotta read the original tale
Hopefully I can find it
@@MajorWilliamHampton Here it is the book was written by Victor Hugo en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hunchback_of_Notre-Dame
if i remember correctly... in Victor hugo's Frollo was the one who shown compassion to the malformed child... however. i agree with you, this version is still magnificient. and relatively correct adaptation of the major points of the story with a simpler plot (if it were 100% accurate, the movie would probably be 4 hours long).
@@Wargulf2838 The character of the Archdeacon and the Judge seemed to both based on Frollo from the book. Frollo is a somewhat complex character in the books, a man who lets his passions get the worst of him that he strived so hard to bury deep, and is the architect of the tragedy that unfolds.
Caleb really does "incandescently furious priest" well.
One day, the bells of Notre Dame will sound again.

Original: a storyteller to children
This: an epic opera/musical meant to be done in the most high class places
Mmmm yes
I'd totally go to an metal opera version of the story.
I wouldn't say the original was meaning for children...
@@arnulfo2503 I mean, the guy was telling the story to some kids :/
I would actually pay to see this at the Royal Albert Hall.
3:01 Caleb's high pitch vocal is spot on!!! I can imagine this narration, " As an infant hangs over his death by Frollo's grasp, the Angel of Mercy cries for a child in distress, calling for his aid."
That’s a really good narration!

Holy shit I got chills. 8O awesome
Damn, goosebumps...
The fisherman fishes, the bakerman bakes.
HMMM YES THE FLOOR HERE IS MADE OUT OF FLOOR
"The fisherman fishes, the bakerman bakes, to the bells of Notre Dame"
The point is that everyone does everything to the bells of Notre Dame (they are being watched by the "eyes"); later even a sinner sins on the steps of Notre Dame. It's a cutesy way of introducing the pervading spirit of Notre Dame (which is the watchful eyes of Mary, the saints, or God depending on what level of symbolism you're looking at).
@@undeadMonk A sinner sins well whatelse is he supposed to do.
American education, everyone
AH YES,

People forget how Metal the Catholic Church can be
Oh, they've burned more people than America's housing market, the Clinton Foundation, Molotov cocktails, and the Spanish Inquisition combined.
That Weird Guy savage
That Weird Guy Well the Spanish inquisition was done by Catholics, so it'd fall under that category.
I put them separately because the Vatican had very little to do with the Spanish Inquisition. It was carried out almost entirely by the Castilian monarchy.
Mr. Dropkicker agreed. i was raised Catholic and damn can it be dark
when he says "you can't hide from the eyes of Notre Dame" it's a double entendre; Notre Dame is a high tower, so it sees everything. But Notre Dame also means "our lady", aka Mary, who is divinated and revered and would also see everything you do.
In the movie it does zoom in to the statue of Mary
In Hellfire, Frollo prays to Maria for forgiveness and strength regarding sin of 'lust'
In the books Victor Hugo also implies Notre Dame itself can think, like when it sends Frollo to his death by breaking the gargoyle statue
Ya'll looking too fucking deep into a kids movie.

Welcome to the internet
I love how Jonathan's eyes look completely black in the scenes where it's just his face in the dark, gives me heavy demon vibes

That cackle from Jonathan at the end is proof that he needs to be a Disney villain
*He could be a shapshifter hiding in an old abandoned opera house, sending visions and shit into people's minds about everything evil in the world*
T. Hart The cackle after 'she ran' was even more solid proof tbh
He would have been perfect for Scar in the remake tbh
your so right he should be
but he's a villain we can like
"So, what kind of music do you like?"
"Well..."
Hi I have this problem too!
I see all the comments about the vocals, and they are amazing, but how about that lighting on Jonathan's face! The way it makes his eyes look black and accentuates the corners of his mouth as he sings. He looks like the Comedy and Tragedy masks came to life and sang this song. Absolutely perfect!
The exact thing I thought of the first time I heard this
That's right! I can't stop thinking about those masks in Dark Deception.
FINALLY someone says it!
It's not that deep
Jonathan: Alright, I just need you to say 'Stop' here.
Caleb: Got it.
Caleb: 3:00
3:09 I get the impression that maybe Jonhatan said stop not just because of the song but to Caleb too lol
also Caleb: *completly over does it and makes this epic*
Seriously you need to be a Disney Villain and Caleb the protagonist
Live action Prince of Egypt? I think Caleb suited Moses quite well, though Jonathan might be a bit too pale for Ramses (then again, many white people have played Pharaohs before).
@@CreeperKiller666 I'd be willing to watch it if they played Moses and Ramses

Kitten Catten that would be pretty fucking cool
The line "whose clutches were iron as much as the bells of Notre Dame" is my favorite part of this. Whoever wrote the lyrics for this song back in the day was pretty amazing.
Seriously, this entire song is absolutely incredible. I agree, that line is amazing from a lyrical stand.
bro that line gives me chills 💀✋🏻
When Frollo sings ‘it’s not my fault, I’m not to blame’ during Hellfire, the voices in the background chant ‘my fault, my fault, truly my fault’ which is yet another incredible detail. Whoever wrote the songs got this movie needed a raise
Disney renaissance man. They had a brilliant writing team then.
Alan Mencken wrote the music. He also did music for Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Prince of Egypt and others. He’s won 8 Oscars. The lyrics were written by Stephen Schwartz, who also did Godspell, Pippin and collaborated with Mencken on other films. He has at least an Oscar and a Grammy to his name.
Caleb's part as the archdeacon is genuinely better than the original, and I LOVE the original!
Such emotion!
You can really feel the "How DARE you defile this sacred ground!" in his voice.
the funny thing that originally the archeadcon is Frollo
And he was cut from that role in the movie as it was going to be seen as disrespectful to the church organizations across the world. He was a judge instead.
@@Craig-bz2iu Frollo in the original book had more positive traits - and was genuinely in between good and evil - unlike the movie where he's very obviously fully evil.
Obviously, it's a novel from Victor Hugo, which means it's very dark and very contemplative of the human condition. He is, after all a realistic author - as in a part of the realist movement not actual realism.
@@Oznerock yes, he did actually educate Quasimodo upon sign language in the book when he was deaf from ringing the bells. And he gave money to his brother, though he was reluctant for the fact Jehan was a drunkard who spent his months mostly on beer. This was to help Jehan with poverty.

Hey.
The bell towers never burned.
Don't say "RIP Notre-Dame". It still "lives". It was already reconstructed during the 19th century. And it's not the first time a cathedral has to be reconstructed in France, Notre-Dame de Reims was also rebuilt after it was bombed during WW1.
And today with 3D plans, they know exactly how it was. So yes, the building will be different, but its story lives on throughout centuries and, in a way, that's beautiful too :)

Dark was the night when our tale was begun
On the docks near Notre Dame
(Shut up, we'll be spotted)
Four frightened gypsies slid silently under
The docks near Notre Dame
(Forgive us, we seek passage into Paris)
But a trap had been laid for the gypsies
And they gazed up in fear and alarm
At a figure whose clutches
Were iron as much as the bells
The bells (Judge Claude Frollo)
The bells of Notre Dame
Judge Claude Frollo longed
To purge the world of vice and sin
And he saw corruption everywhere
Except within

(My conscience is clear)
You can lie to yourself and your minions
You can claim that you haven't a qualm
But you never can run
Nor hide what you've done from the eyes
The very eyes of Notre Dame
And for one time in his life of power and control
Frollo felt a twinge of fear for his immortal soul
And Frollo gave the child a cruel name
A name that means 'half formed'

Any song containing Latin instantly becomes 200% more metal.
I honestly think it’s due to Latin being so associated with the Catholic Church, and their role in the Spanish Inquisition, and how much fear it struck into many during then and that fear was like ingrained into folks through history and generations, to where now when you hear it, it causes an uneasy feeling, unless obviously you live near Italy lol
@@dw4725 I don't feel uneasy when I hear Latin in music. Latin in music makes ME feel epic by proxy. Like I could run faster than sound, lift a schoolbus, or take on an ancient sword-wielding army. I think I feel pretty ambivalent about Latin outside of music, but in music (especially high-energy music) Latin gets me pumped!
But that's just me.

For those like me who are wondering what Jon is whispering at the end: it is the hail mary.
"Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee; blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus." - wikipedia
Brilliant detail considering the significance:)
Original: a religious man who refuses to accept that he is being cruel and decides to seek out his newfound lust
Peter Hollens's version: A gentleman trying to be a good person but ultimately falling to corruption
This: A warrior who is falling to insanity and pain knowing full well he is screwed

Frollo felt a twinge of fear
For his immortal soul
Just so he's kept locked away
Where no one else can see
Even this foul creature may
Yet prove one day to be
Of use to me
Now here is a riddle to guess if you can
Sing the bells of Notre Dame
Who is the monster and who is the man
Sing the bells, bells, bells, bells
Bells, bells, bells, bells
Bells of Notre Dame
The hero we didn't ask for
But the hero we needed
You forgot “STOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHP!!!!!!!”
Up you go!
The close-ups on Jonathan's face were really unsettling. It was super uncanny valley.
Crimson Trax I thought I was the only one who thought that! Every time he smiles in the dark the smile just looks super creepy like he’s the Joker or something. Very well done for atmosphere.
Yes
Every time he says Notre Dame, I get shivers from the tone and note changing! So clear and pleasing to the ear!
I just remembered this cover and I wont forget about it again.
I just wanted to say thank you to you and Caleb. My son Aden is 7 years old and and has Autism and let me tell you, he is the biggest fan of you both. He still has problems with speech, but when he listens to music he becomes more verbal. He loves the sound you guys have, not only by yourselves, but together! He mimics your videos and tries to sing exactly like you both. I am a Disney NERD and you have given me special moments with my son. We share a love of Disney music now (he only likes ya'lls versions...) and we have never really had that kind of connection because it is hard for him to associate and connect with people. You both helped me make that connection with him, and for that, I cannot thank you both enough! It means the world to me. Please keep doing what you are doing, because it changes lives! ❤
Belinda Doll I love this. Rock on little man!
Disney movies helped me a lot in my childhood as an Autistic kid as well.
Belinda Doll these are the stories that make life worth living
Does he really?
Sweetest thing I’ve heard all quarantine
When Joathan Sings Nowwwwwwwwww at 4:16 it gave me the chills
Totally channels Tim Curry. While he’s not in the film, it reminds me of Curry in Fern Gully
Same here. That one word is my favorite part of this already amazing cover
its a flat 5th, which creates tension towards the diatonic 5th of the key. in laymans term, crunchy dissonance make brain happy
also forgot to mention that a flat 5th, when paired with the 1 note makes a tritone, or the devil's interval
One of Disney's best movies, music-wise and otherwise.
Hellfire is one of my all-time favorite songs. It's just so haunting and aggressive. It's great. I'm also a huge punk rocker. So, when I saw Jonathan I was a bit skeptical because Hellfire is A LOT to live up to. But, shit if they didn't make it even better! I'm seriously obsessed! Also, I know this comment is four years late, (my bad) but I'm new to this channel. Don't judge. Also also, Jonathan is fiiiiiine af!!
Gotta do "Friends on the Other side" from Princess and the Frog. That'd be awesome!
Yes please!
HE CONFIRMED HE WAS DOING FRIENDS FROM THE OTHER SIDE
#HYPE
SWAGGY- CHAN123 hell yeah!
THAT WOULD BE AMAZING! WE NEED THIS
PLZ
He did it. ;)
No one ever, Ever expects the Metal Inquisition!
Mike Brammer fucking beautiful!
They were expecting us! All of us!
XD OMG!! 😂😂😂😂
DIOS MIO NOOOOOOO
I really like how the shadows play off of Jonathan's face (specifically his eyes and mouth) and make him look like one of those greek comedy/tragedy masks. It's a really good touch considering the narrator's literally a jester/performer/whatever.
The moment of the archdeacon is intense, the blue light behind symbolizes for me the intervention of God.
How about you try a metal cover of "Friends on the other side"? :D
yeah :)
That'd be so awesome.
YEEEEEEEES! That would be so badass!
Totally agree with you! I love your pic by the way. Just started watching Soul Eater & it's awesome & kinda confusing at the same time.
Kelly Moore
the anime have a very crappy ending, so I reccomend you read the manga instead :)
OMG when he says 'the bakerman bakes' it sounds so freaking dramatic and epic.
Coming in from just listening to this on Spotify. I did NOT see that Caleb was in it and got chills when I heard him.
I almost screeched.
Why is nobody talking about when Caleb sings the priest's part? I get chills literally every time!!!
"She ran" CHILLS!
This version is amazing! And I noticed an interesting fact about this song thanks to this cover. When Frollo starts to chase Quasimodo's mother, the composer chose to use "Dies Irae" in the background. This particular piece is quite old, about 1000 AD, and has been used in requiems. Therefore it is foreshadowing the mother's death.
Agree! I think we can also see into it the dement behaviour of Frollo who will make his own damnation in the future. So coooooooooool
It also foreshadows Frollo’s demise.
Dies Irae means "day of anger/wrath", it is was used in requiems that are religious pieces. I think it represent Frollo's wrath and the fact that he is corrupting his faith in order to justify his cruelty.
@@b.pauline422 Thank you, we also watched this video. Idiot.
Its also a Mozart Requiem!
I love the fact that they included the dialogue.
A video showed up in my feed about a musician saying Jonathan ruined this track, so I'm here giving this several more views today. Jonathan, you are awesome, and don't ever let anyone tell you otherwise. If only I could give this video more than one like.
I love the lines
But you can never run
Nor hide what you've done
from the eyes; the very eyes of Notre Dame
Edit: 793 likes? Excuse me but W H Y?
AlCreon 66 best lyrics from that movie.
ersonally I think this cover fucked it up because of the voice they used for it.
Caleb nailed it!
the tale of a man and a monster .
the tale of quasimodo and frolo .
in that very right order ... ;)
Necro Playz same
God you do these PERFECTLY!!!!
Could you please try The Plagues from Prince of Egypt? You could pull off the menacing SO well for it!
Already been confirmed.
Prince of Egypt music.
That Weird Guy dude please let this be a real thing!!!
The Plague song is such a great suggestion!
DO IT. DO IT. DO IT. DO IT! DO IT!! DO IT!!!
This song and "Hellfire" still hurt me on another level... after I watched The Hunchback of Notre Dame for the first time I wanted to see this gorgeous cathedral. After the fire it's not possible anymore. It still breaks my heart
This isn’t a new video by any means, but the frame rate and the lighting makes your face look like a mask, or one of the stone faces of the Kings of Isreal from the side of Notre Dame. Truly haunting. Its well appreciated!!!
