I like that in the verse: "It's not my fault, I'm not to blame" the voices in the background are chanting "Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa" Which means, you guessed it, "My fault, my fault, uttmostly my fault." I like to think that's god himself accusing Frollo.
Before anything, i know how musicals work, supposedly people don't really sing, but i always thought it symbolized how that song and everything was on frollo's mind, So those "Mea culpa" could also be himself knowing deeply inside he's wrong, but convincing himself he's not
There is so much to interpret in this song and especially in the visuals too. Like the guy who comes in towards the end. You never see his face but he is coated in blue light and it's like God is giving him a final chance when he says "She's gone, we can't find her" to just let it go and stay righteous, to which he responds in anger and ushers 'god' out. It's also interesting how in some form, he displays all 7 of the deadly sins in this song, despite beeing supposedly so religious: Pride: He outright says how proud he is of himself for being so much more virtious than all the other people Greed: Obviously, he sings "Let her burn, or be mine and mine alone". He doesn't want her as a partner, he wants to own her. Wrath: Displayed most strongly during the aforementioned scene, when a guard comes in and is wrathfully cast out, only to be concluded by "I will find her and if i have to burn down all of Paris" Envy: A bit more hidden, but there's envy in that Esmeralda is with the other Gypsies, that others can enjoy her dances when he feels so guilty for it, and also a hint of envy that others do not have to bother with this guilt. Lust: Well i don't think i have to say anything about that do i? Gluttony: Is displayed in a bit of the same vein as greed. He isn't statisfied with just being her or watching her perform, he wants to own her entirely, he wants ALL of her. And lastly Sloth: Is displayed in a form in the way he basically asks god and maria to do his work for him. As the justice minister, he should be out there, hunting criminals. Instead, he is here, asking Maria to solve this problem for him, saying that he will go after Esmeralda later, casting the guard out instead of taking command when a prisoner has escaped, because he wants to wallow in self-pity a little more. This song is truly brilliant in it's symbolism.
I always felt that the most impactful part of the lyric was the part where he's singing "it's not my fault". He's straight up putting the blame on God, claiming he's flawed. It's so blasphemous and Frollo doesn't even realise it. It emphasizes just how fake his righteousness is. (I'm not religious or anything, I just think this part is particularly well written)
Frollo covers damn near every single one of the seven cardinal sins in this song, starting with Pride (when he's boasting of his own virtue) and ending with Wrath (he leaves out Sloth; if anything, burning down Paris sounds like a lot of work).
I'd say Sloth being his ultimatum "choose me or your pyre". Not willing to work for her love and just demanding it. Now that I think of if. Sloth has a lot in common with Greed
@@Noobzlikeu it doesn’t have to be food, it’s the desire to have more then you need to prevent others from having it. So his desire to possess her so no one else can possess her beauty
The most dangerous part of Frollo's intentions was that he believed he was righteous even in the face of contradiction. He validated his wrongdoings by claiming to be doing God's work. Excellent villain, Disney.
i wish that Disney would make a live action of the hunch back of Notre dam actually and do a really really good job with this one. a lot of care and attention to detail. Thing is this story in the book was more on an adult level than kid when it goes into themes. However this story is a good one to question many things.
Well if you think about it, a lot of real-life villains were precisely like that. Heck, people in general are like that. We don't like being faced with the idea that we could be wrong or bad people so our brain automatically downplays it for a great part and just plays around it. In some people that's more extreme than in others.
My thoughts on this song: The original: A cold, calculating man comes to the decision to kill a woman thanks to his own confusion and fear of his new lust. Annapantsu's version: A nun discovers her sexuality and struggles to come to terms with it, ultimately deciding to kill the woman to avoid sinning. Jonathan Young's version: Unhinged, unlike the original this sounds like the man would *actually* burn down all of Paris. I'd say this version of Frolo presents the most dangerous out of all of them.
This version feels like someone going insane from inner torment. Realising that he is at fault but just not wanting to admit to it, and breaking from that inner conflict.
I figured it more like a descent into insanity, while the original is more justification for his feelings, this feels like an active slide into madness and rage, culminating in his decision to burn Paris.
@@TheDisturbedDragon For some reasons, your comment made me imagine Frolo surfing waves of fire on a cross while singing like a maniac and holding esmeralda's scarf. Thanks !
I imagine this as Frolo after he died, trapped in his eternal torment, this is his punishment. To relive the moment he became unable to turn back over and over again. As others have pointed out in the background lyrics it goes "Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa" which means "my fault, my fault, completely my fault". Frolo has gone mad from guilt and hatred.
Patrick Page's Version: A good man who slowly descends into insanity because of his lust and obsession that was fueled by guilt over his past and misguided ideals

Exactly. Frollo very well could exist. An evil lion uncle who kills his brother because he wants to be king or a half octopus sea witch? Not happening. Frollo could be existing somewhere right now.

This is haunting. The discordancy at the end, signifying that he's losing his mind, really got me. For such a loathsome villain, you really captured the undertone of torment. Frollo begging for Holy Sanctuary with tears in his eyes is chilling. He knows he's warped, yet can't accept it. He craves the warmth of God that he denies others. He knows deep down he is not deserving of Heaven's Light. He is damned.
Not to mention we see Frollo in this video cry out for sanctuary on his knees... just like q certain other gypsy he denied sanctuary and ended the life of.
@@joshlee7449 Indeed since we all know in the end his eyes actualy tell what Frollo truely has become and ends up being thrust into a hell of his own making.
Do you even know what Heaven is? There was no light there, accept for the star light and moon light and sun light. Heaven literally no longer exists. It was a park in New York, that got tore down as a bunch of shit children showed up and ripped down the sign that said Heaven. Then they built New York on top of Heaven. Because God is 4 Carbon and 1 oxygen to make electricity and lightning and thunder......
Frollo doesn't "craves the warmth of God" he isn't craving "Holy" sanctuary, it is simply asking any one and everyone to let him inside, because he wants to get out of the sun that has been over his head for hundreds of years at this point. Frollo is one of the most underrated, and the most evil Disney villain. This song shows how truly insane he is. I actually wrote a paper in High School for this song explaining what I believed was happening. I believed that as the song went on Frollo is slowly showing his true self. But it is so much deeper. He is showing his true colors but not on purpose. As he goes on he is fighting his inner demon's. Slowly he is losing control and he can see that he is exactly what he preaches against. This leads him to attempting to justify why he is this way, to the point he blames God. In the end he cannot fight his dark feelings anymore and succumbs to his desires. Truly one of the most underrated songs and villains of all time. Johnathan did an excellent job bringing Frollo to life and making him the dark villain that Disney could not.
Actually, the true villian of the story is "me" who happened to be Maria. Which was the Sun who came to Earth to talk to myself, and inhabitted the body of a woman, he called Maria, once he inhabitted her.

He's a good villain because people like him exist. Very few people today need to deal with an uncle murdering their dad and taking the throne or evil witches. But although Frollo may be exaggerated for effect, you can find plenty of examples of hypocritical, sexist, religious fanatics who never take responsibility for their own shortcomings in real life.

Yeah that's the coolest addition of this cover I guess Frollo forgot that what comes after that is "I never knew you, depart from me, you workers of lawlessness"
What's really interesting about this cover is that it's more accurate to Book Frollo. Frollo in the novel didn't start out evil, but instead his lust for Esmeralda literally drove him insane. This song in the movie, Frollo was trying to justify his selfish desires. In Jonathan's cover, his emotions are tearing him apart. The acting really brings it home.
If I remember correctly, Frollo wasn't a judge either, but the archdeacon even though I can understand why they decided for him to be a judge in the movie.
In the book the guard captain had an affair with Esmerelda, then turned her in to avoid getting in trouble. She was hanged, Frollo laughed about it and then Quasimodo pushed him off the tower balcony to his death.
Holy shit, those tears at the end. I have never heard a better version of this song. This is how Frollo should have been portrayed: a man driven mad by desire and lust. A deeply troubled man. I... I just don't have the words to describe how beautiful and awesome this was. Like everything! Yes Jonathan sang this almost to perfection but also the effects, the dancing gipsy in the flickering light, the camera work, the tears! This must have taken so many hours to complete. It is a masterpiece. This really got to me. I need to process this for a bit.. I'm gonna watch it again.
Fun fact, you have to take into account that Disney was appealing to two audiences in that movie. Both children and adults. The music tells the story, but it's frollo's face during the song that displays the depth of what is really going on. I highly recommend you watch the scene in its entirety again and pay special attention to the subtext of frollo's actions and movements. Although this is the most faithful Recreation of Hellfire I have ever seen, all of the fear and rage and emotions and anxiety can be found in that original version as well.
Literally watch the movie yesterday and as I was putting the disc in I was like “in honor of Notre Dame!” Also this song isn’t specifically about burning down Notre Dame. That wasn’t Frollo’s original plan. He just wanted to burn everything until he found Esmeralda. In the movie, the fire on Notre Dame actually starts by Quasimodo pouring some lava stuff over the side of the building to burn the attacking soldiers below.

Dear Disney, 1. remake the movie 2. this time make it from Frollo's perspective (like maleficent) 3. give this man the lead role Boom! Absolute success.
SkyExplosion What is that you didn't like? The concept? The plot? The actors? Cause it makes a big difference you know. I mentioned Maleficent as an example of making a movie from the vilain's perspective.
Maleficent sucked because she had no arc in the original movie. She was a unsympathetic bitch in the beginning and an unsympathetic bitch in the end, and that made her great. Frollo does have an arc, this song, therefore he could be given a backstory as long as it delved into his decent into accepting his own evil.
Even my wife, who is a Disney fanatic, agrees this cover is a thousand times better then the original. It really captures the true villain behind the character. A true masterpiece.

Nah, man. The original was infinitely better because he sounds condescending, creepy, and grapey. Like the character. This version is great--but never better--than the original.
This song paints frollo on so many different levels. He's not the typical villain that just wants the girl. He tries to be a righteous man, he's not lying about that. In the lyics he admits that he's sinning, and he questions god why he made the devil stronger. He starts having a religious breakdown, but turns into maria, asks her for protection instead, and in the midst of it, embracing the sin but asking for mercy on his soul, he never gave out on her. And this is a Disney movie. I mean It's rare for a movie today has an antagonist half as interesting as this character.
Yes, when I recently watched Hunchback of Notre Dame, I was like, _this is a kid's movie!_ I think if I'd watched it as a kid, it would have mucked with my head. It really is epic though - and so is this cover!
This was my favorite movie when I was kid..I'd watch it a few times a day. Then, when I was a bit older I stopped doing that, and hadn't watched the movie for several years...and like...remembered the gist of the movie, but forgot most of the details...and when I went back and watched as an adult...oh my god. I understood everything more than I ever could have as a kid...and the movie is just so DARK it's crazy! I love it now more than ever, but like, what was wrong with little me? hahaa
@@hannahtj1940 I missed all of that as a kid...I wasn't as interested in the movie, but this has renewed my interest. It's rare to see such complexity and darkness in a Disney movie. It's fucking awesome. Whoever wrote this song is amazing.
I mean, he's still entirely displacing the responsibility for controlling his behavior onto other people or forces. His prayer isn't "help me feel different or remain in control of myself" it's "destroy her or give her to me." He blames his lust on her instead of taking responsibility for himself.
The first time I heard him say that, I thought he was screaming "GIVE ME SEX ALREADY!!!!" lol But I quickly course corrected a couple seconds later. Although, honestly, that line would have made just as much sense in the context of this song!
Love the way he interprets the inner struggle of good and evil inside at 2:10. It’s hard to hear but I’m pretty sure he’s pleading to Maria and reciting lines of the Lord’s Prayer as he’s torn apart from within. And then at 2:30 you see the flashing red and deep echoing voice as the evil becomes victorious and fully possess him. Such fascinating take on Frollo
This is the pivotal moment of the movie. It’s where Frollo turns his back to God completely and cements his fate. Frollo is so obsessed with his lust that even when he gets what he asks for (Esmeralda is out of his life, the temptation is gone), he doesn’t have enough. The guard who told him Esmeralda had escaped was an analog for God trying to give Frollo one last chance.

This is honestly my favourite song Jonathan Young has every done. I have no idea why, I haven't even seen the film, but it's probably because the music is pure at the start and just gets darker and darker as the character becomes more obsessed. Love it
This really captures so much emotion from this beautiful song. Frollo's inner war between his strong religious beliefs and his sexual tension for Esmerelda, and even the sexual satifaction of seeing her burn. Such an amazing cover.

Disney actually made the movie into a musical which is much more like the book (and this cover was based on the musicals version of Esmeralda if I'm not mistaken)
Johnathan Young’s version feels so dark and full of emotion, like capturing all the feelings Frollo felt towards Esmeralda. As he transitions further in the song, the sin of lust within Frollo got stronger, so he began blaming God, blaming Esmeralda, and not accepting himself as a common folk at all. By the end of the song, Johnathan began crying which reinforces Frollo as a man not understanding that his intentions are evil, when he still tries to find reason that he is a pure man who has done nothing wrong.
Completely wrong, in the first sentence. My feeling were for Maria, not for Esmeralda. My feelings toward Esmeralda were, I need to save this stupid chick from Methane, before she gets herself killed in a fire...... See, you can't even understand the song..... Much less Frollo or his intentions, or the fact that Frollo was literally Quasimoto. There is no lust for Esmeralda. There is no lust at all during the entirety of the tale. There was Love between Death and Maria, Death who happened to be Frollo and Quasimoto. But even with Maria, it isn't about lust, it is about a friendship and enjoying life together, not a lustful relationship at all. But mostly a fear of Maria wanting to set the city on fire and the people I spoke with on fire until they were dead. Currently, my past self is forcing me to feel sexual desire, that was set up in the past, and forced to happen in the now. So now I have lustful thoughts, based on my personal past self, essentially raping my future self. Which is my current self. Frollo's intentions were never evil. You just preceive it that way, because the word me, you misunderstand as being directed at ones self, where as at this time it is directed at a seperate entity methane who is abbriviated to "me" for short, who literally is in the song claiming the blame for all that is going wrong and all the evil being done in the town, which was Maria, but that wasn't even her real name, that was just the name the Sun gave the woman he inhabitted to talk with me... But don't worry about it, you only know me is a reflection of ones self, because you are infected with methane yourself, thus you hate the guy that wasn't and hate him for conversing with a human methane who's shorthand name, or nickname was me, because they were supposed to be friends, but me was intentionally destroying everything I loved, and destroying all of the work I was doing and attacking anyone I had the slightest sorrow for or slightest bit of emotion towards. Regardless of if was as a friend or a random stranger I just met, that I kind of liked a little tiny bit.
Seriously, look back at the lyrics of the song, I am singing to Maria, first off, second off, you are misunderstanding, believing there is some kind of burning desire for esmeralda, which that is coming from methane (me being his nickname, but her name being Maria, because the Sun possessed a woman and gave her the name maria), not from Frollo. The desire from Frollo is to stop Esmeralda from dying in a fire, that Methane intends to cause to burn her until she dies, because I explained to "Me" (methane) that I kind of liked Esmeralda, even though I just met her for the first time.

Wow, there's such raw emotion in this version. I've never felt anything other than disgust and contempt for Frollo before, but I actually felt a bit sorry for him. Frollo seems to be completely anguished over his "sin" and the choice that he's decided to give Esmeralda. I got the feeling he really really doesn't want to see her burn, but thinks he has no other choice due to his own twisted interpretation of Christianity.
The dominant religion in France is Catholicism my dude and yeah, I agree. He did say ". . .or let her be mine and mine alone" so I think, even if it were out of lust, he still would have treated her right if she committed to him. But imagine the first time she tries to leave. ...O.O
Youre thinking about it too much. Its just a song about a lonely, horny old man complaining about being horny. Its kind of gross. who doesn't believe in sex because of his "faith" but will straight up kill a woman and kidnap a child. Its a great song, but its gross.
the emotion in his face, the torment in his voice, is something that could give one's soul to chills, I almost felt as if, I could *understand* the strain, and conflict that man Frollo surely felt. this, was, an, AWESOME cover for this song!! it takes some major talent and planning to make something like this I'd imagine, and it is AMAZING.

So many of the covers have Frollo sound like he's in *control*, which is totally wrong! Jonathan is one of the few who does it right! The overwhelmingness of the music dominates the singing, making Frollo sound "small". (No, your voice is fantastic and strong, so I mean "small" compared to the music and not in absolute terms). I didn't notice this I. The first viewing, but when Jonathan says "its not my fault" you can hear voices in the background say "it's your fault" and such. Pretty awesome if you ask me.
Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. "Through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault," is how the English confession prayer at the beginning of Catholic mass translates that line. After which attendees furthermore ask Mary first and foremost to intercede for them. Particularly effective given the content of the song~
Music does things to you. Sometimes, when you sing a song with a lot of emotion associated with it, you feel it for yourself. Not everyone reacts to it the same. Clearly, this song hit a nerve in him. Almost like a spiritual experience of some kind.
You know, much as I loved JoYo, I didn't know if he'd really be able to handle the cutting humanity in this song as a metal re-write, especially given that you can practically hear the crisis of faith Tony Jay's Frollo is mentally plastering over in his voice as he stammers out how innocent he is despite his conscience chanting 'my own fault' in the background... ...but shit man, he nailed it. I don't know how, but he nailed it. The mad lad even added crying. Hats off to you, JoYo, this was yet another 『Gold Experience』
For some reason I find this from time to time and go "Holy shit Jonathan, you ok my dude?" because of how insanely outstanding this interpretation is in every level and then I just kinda move on and forget to add it to my playlists. When I find it again through my YT favorites it all starts again and I think its so crazy how this never ceases to amaze me and give me all the chills no matter how many times I do this lmao This is a heckin' masterpiece!

Wow. This is AMAZING! The vocals, the visuals, it was all absolutely brilliant. I'd love to see you do a male metal cover of "Mordred's Lullaby" by Heather Dale.
I feel like this could have come out better. One thing that bugs me is that his vocals are being drowned out by the instrumental. I feel like it would have had a more impact if his vocals were a tad bit more amplified to match the strength of the instrumental. Over all I gotta give him props for covering a good song.
+JediSpectre117 To be fair most of the songs from PoE are great, The Plagues and Look Though Heavens eyes would be great! When you believe needs to be popularised as an ensemble, not a pop solo ugh Im up for any and all of PoE being covered haha
Jonathan has no crush. Just the hammer of Thor and a destiny to die in 4 years. I, Jonathan do have a love, that has proven time and again the love is not reciprocal and is one sided. Because people can't even fathom what love is. Much like people think Heaven is some place after dying. But it was just a place, when I was still going by the name Death, I hung a sign, that said Heaven, and I named two white birds I found in Heaven Park, a coastal nature park, Angel. Then I went and found my love, that when I showed my love the white birds, my love decided to rename them Doves, so I decided, even though they were already named Angel, I would spread the name Dove. The white birds from Heaven. That were once Angels, but became known as Dove, and no one ever found Heaven, because it no longer exists. Since the nature park was torn down to build a giant city on top of it, leaving only Central Park, which is far from the shore, where Heaven once was. Right on the beach.
I feel as if this cover and the one by Elsie Lovelock are definitely tied. They're both the best I've heard so far. The one by Anna is really good though and comes in at close second.
Having Frollo scream “GIVE ME SANCTUARY, PLEASE” just like the poor woman he murdered is genius.
I didn't even realize that, that *is* brilliant-
Brilliant touch 🤘🏻
Typical religion in the middle age
AnonAlpaca I thought he was yelling "give me sex already," but that works too
@@Fyrestar same
I like that in the verse: "It's not my fault, I'm not to blame" the voices in the background are chanting "Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa" Which means, you guessed it, "My fault, my fault, uttmostly my fault." I like to think that's god himself accusing Frollo.
Before anything, i know how musicals work, supposedly people don't really sing, but i always thought it symbolized how that song and everything was on frollo's mind, So those "Mea culpa" could also be himself knowing deeply inside he's wrong, but convincing himself he's not
@@mallowmarsh6868 I really like that interpretation! Like his own judge and jury, right?
There is so much to interpret in this song and especially in the visuals too. Like the guy who comes in towards the end. You never see his face but he is coated in blue light and it's like God is giving him a final chance when he says "She's gone, we can't find her" to just let it go and stay righteous, to which he responds in anger and ushers 'god' out.
It's also interesting how in some form, he displays all 7 of the deadly sins in this song, despite beeing supposedly so religious:
Pride: He outright says how proud he is of himself for being so much more virtious than all the other people
Greed: Obviously, he sings "Let her burn, or be mine and mine alone". He doesn't want her as a partner, he wants to own her.
Wrath: Displayed most strongly during the aforementioned scene, when a guard comes in and is wrathfully cast out, only to be concluded by "I will find her and if i have to burn down all of Paris"
Envy: A bit more hidden, but there's envy in that Esmeralda is with the other Gypsies, that others can enjoy her dances when he feels so guilty for it, and also a hint of envy that others do not have to bother with this guilt.
Those words were in the original Disney version.
Also the voices of Frollo's guilty conscience that he tries to shut up 😬
I always felt that the most impactful part of the lyric was the part where he's singing "it's not my fault".
He's straight up putting the blame on God, claiming he's flawed. It's so blasphemous and Frollo doesn't even realise it. It emphasizes just how fake his righteousness is. (I'm not religious or anything, I just think this part is particularly well written)
Oh yeah I love part!
Well said!!
I'm a Christian and I agree.
@klausiboy kristensen best interpretation I've seen in a while 100% agree
Fun fact, that's the same exact sin the first humans commited (Adam blaming the fruit-eating on Eve and God for giving him her)
Frollo covers damn near every single one of the seven cardinal sins in this song, starting with Pride (when he's boasting of his own virtue) and ending with Wrath (he leaves out Sloth; if anything, burning down Paris sounds like a lot of work).
I'd say Sloth being his ultimatum "choose me or your pyre". Not willing to work for her love and just demanding it.
Now that I think of if. Sloth has a lot in common with Greed
The only one I don't see any mention of or relation to is Gluttony.
@@Noobzlikeu it doesn’t have to be food, it’s the desire to have more then you need to prevent others from having it.
So his desire to possess her so no one else can possess her beauty
@@justafanofz That's more Greed than Gluttony, but I guess it does count.
That's seven then, Frollo is a demon: confirmed.
The most dangerous part of Frollo's intentions was that he believed he was righteous even in the face of contradiction. He validated his wrongdoings by claiming to be doing God's work. Excellent villain, Disney.
idk, him commanding the city guard seems more dangerous.
i wish that Disney would make a live action of the hunch back of Notre dam actually and do a really really good job with this one. a lot of care and attention to detail. Thing is this story in the book was more on an adult level than kid when it goes into themes. However this story is a good one to question many things.
@Aidan Hilditch true Victor Hugo did.
Well if you think about it, a lot of real-life villains were precisely like that. Heck, people in general are like that. We don't like being faced with the idea that we could be wrong or bad people so our brain automatically downplays it for a great part and just plays around it. In some people that's more extreme than in others.
That’s not exactly original
From just reflecting the song, Frollo was guilty of 3 Deadly Sins;
Pride, Lust & Wrath
Callum Reid Sloth too as he won’t accept responsibility for his sins and chooses to blame Esmeralda.
bloodyrose1985 I think that’s still pride
@@markusallen102 Meh seems like sloth but I won't argue.
Callum Reid also you mean greed too
Y’all forgot envy big time.
My thoughts on this song:
The original: A cold, calculating man comes to the decision to kill a woman thanks to his own confusion and fear of his new lust.
Frollo has to be the scariest Disney villain, cause he is by far the most realistic.

What grade did you get on the paper?
Actually, the true villian of the story is "me" who happened to be Maria. Which was the Sun who came to Earth to talk to myself, and inhabitted the body of a woman, he called Maria, once he inhabitted her.

He's a good villain because people like him exist. Very few people today need to deal with an uncle murdering their dad and taking the throne or evil witches. But although Frollo may be exaggerated for effect, you can find plenty of examples of hypocritical, sexist, religious fanatics who never take responsibility for their own shortcomings in real life.

Fun fact, you have to take into account that Disney was appealing to two audiences in that movie. Both children and adults. I highly recommend you watch the scene in its entirety again and pay special attention to the subtext of frollo's actions and movements. Although this is the most faithful Recreation of Hellfire I have ever seen, all of the fear and rage and emotions and anxiety can be found in that original version as well.

I love how the first moments sounds so holy then goes gradually ballistic to the end.
This song perfectly displays the personality of Frollo
Dear Disney,
1. remake the movie
2. this time make it from Frollo's perspective (like maleficent)
3. give this man the lead role
Boom! Absolute success.
I would watch that! :D
Nah Maleficent sucked
SkyExplosion What is that you didn't like? The concept? The plot? The actors? Cause it makes a big difference you know. I mentioned Maleficent as an example of making a movie from the vilain's perspective.
Maleficent sucked because she had no arc in the original movie. She was a unsympathetic bitch in the beginning and an unsympathetic bitch in the end, and that made her great.
Frollo does have an arc, this song, therefore he could be given a backstory as long as it delved into his decent into accepting his own evil.
Frollo's perspective? Nah, Frollo is a priest insane
Even my wife, who is a Disney fanatic, agrees this cover is a thousand times better then the original. It really captures the true villain behind the character. A true masterpiece.

She’s so freaking right
I don't agree
Oriboros yeah and he’s not trusting that God is stronger then the devil either. He’s turning to Maria
That "MARIA, GIVE ME SANCTUARY PLEEEEASE" is just so good, and so fitting.
Shows how upset and desperate Frolo became.

@@miloshort3553 nah, he's too young to be frollo and I can actually see someone being attracted to him. But the scuffer does have to be in it!

The "give me sanctuary" at the end gave me chills and goosebumps

I didn't know I needed this until you said it.
Disney actually made the movie into a musical which is much more like the book (and this cover was based on the musicals version of Esmeralda if I'm not mistaken)
Someone please call Tobias Sammet. Or Jonathan Young. Or BOTH :-D

Totally agree! Making the character younger takes away the creepy factor and you instead focus on the conflict and anguish of the character.
He's a much more sympathetic character in the non Disney musical
The dominant religion in France is Catholicism my dude and yeah, I agree. He did say ". . .or let her be mine and mine alone" so I think, even if it were out of lust, he still would have treated her right if she committed to him. But imagine the first time she tries to leave. ...O.O

This is my most replayed Jonathan Young cover, its so good!!!
Mine too.
I've listened to every cover of this song I can find. This is by far the best.
I have to disagree on that. This is by far the 2nd best on the cover. I personally think the female cover by Anna is 1st. But I still love this on
I feel as if this cover and the one by Elsie Lovelock are definitely tied. They're both the best I've heard so far. The one by Anna is really good though and comes in at close second.
I have heard Anna's and Caleb's covers. They were as great as this one, only they used the actual instrumental
I have to disagree. Google translate is superior here.
currently me. i love this song so frigging much, Disney really out did themselves.
