Frollo is still to date Disney's darkest and most evil villain, none have gotten even remotely close to him, sure Scar and Ursula were rather evil for Disney villains, but they're extremely tame when compared to Frollo. The priest was a corrupt man while the gypsy was pure and I still honestly think Disney paid off someone to get this to be a G-Rated movie... I watched some of this with my kid and we had to turn if off. Sorry if I scared anyone w/ my video. I get into my characters a bit too much sometimes!
LYRICS:
Beata Maria
You know I am a righteous man
Of my virtue I am justly proud
(Et tibit Pater)
Beata Maria
You know I'm so much purer than
The common, vulgar, weak, licentious crowd
(Quia peccavi nimis)
Then tell me, Maria
Why I see her dancing there
Why her smold'ring eyes still scorch my soul
(Cogitatione)
I feel her, I see her
The sun caught in her r aven hair
Is blazing in me out of all control
(Verbo et opere)
C1
Like fire
Hellfire
This fire in my skin
This burning
Desire
Is turning me to s in
V2:
It's not my fault
(Mea culpa)
I'm not to blame
It is the gypsy girl
The witch who sent this flame
(Mea maxima culpa)
It's not my fault
(Mea culpa)
If in God's plan
(Mea culpa)
He made the devil so much
Stronger than a man
(Mea maxima culpa)
Protect me, Maria
Don't let this siren cast her spell
Don't let her fire sear my flesh and bone
Destroy Esmeralda
And let her taste the fires of h ell
Or else let her be mine and mine alone

Disney needs to return to this darker style and themes that was the 90s, it held and holds some of the best Disney movies ever made, and now that we’re entering live action, this movie if ever remade needs to hold this dark theme, everything needs to be captured in the dark way, I would go see the movie multiple times if it was done right
Agreed.
If they make it a live action i think Peter should be in it
@@roxxannachochinov9366 Yeah!
They actually had movie that was rated R because it was too disturbing for kids and parents that came out in the 80s
A. G. R. E. E. D
This is actually how the book version of this movie ends:
".. after yet another failed attempt to win her love, Frollo betrays Esmeralda by handing her to the troops and watches while she is being hanged. When Frollo laughs during Esmeralda's hanging, Quasimodo pushes him from the height of Notre Dame to his death. Quasimodo goes to the cemetery, hugs Esmeralda's body, and dies of starvation with her."
I agree Frollo's song is dark, but they did rework the story considerably to make it Disney worthy. It could've have been much.... much worse. Also Esmeralda is only 16 in the book and falls in love with Phoebus, who just wants to sleep with her. Then Frollo attempts to murder Phoebus in a jealous rage and Esmeralda gets the blame for the stabbing, after which Phoebus no longer wants her.
Welcome to og fairy tales.
I should recommend watching the Musical that Disney released that's even closer to the events of the book. Like really close, they've included new characters, expanded the plot by adding extra scenes, and adapted the ending of the book

I debated on whether or not to include a disclaimer..but this is a little out of character for me so didn't want to scare any kids!
Peter Hollens I get the warning : the song lyrics who might seem to romantic or oversexualized for kids under 15 ( especially if the kids are under 5 years old
Tbh, I was under 10 when this movie was a new thing and I didn´t really register the meaning of this song at all, not until after I grew up.
I like the irony of it
Yeah its crazy. Its a Disney movie made for kids but I dont think I'd be comfortable letting any kids under 12 see it. Lol its pretty dark
After going back and watching the medley version, I spotted some cool differences. In the medley he seems more depressed and worried about the fact that he was feeling the way he was. In this version he sounds more angry and vengeful. Peter, you did an awesome job man. Now Please do a full version of Be Prepared!!!

Hellfire is, without question, one of my absolute favorite Disney songs - not simply Disney VILLAIN songs, but Disney SONGS. It's brilliantly written and layered: even as Frollo proclaims that his lust for Esmeralda is not his fault, but hers, the chorus - his own inner voices - proclaims "Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!"
The Confiteor is a confession, an admission of guilt and of human frailty and weakness in thought and word, in what was done and what they failed to do. But Frollo, despite knowing that his actions are wrong, forges on ahead anyway. And that is the tragedy of this song.
SAME!
Gosh yes. Hellfire was the highlight of the villains medley, and this is just out of the park.
Smittens I love the Hellfire song! It is the gustiest song Disney ever produced!

Mine too!
This song is probably the one classic Disney song that I did not fully comprehend as a child. Though I now understand the reason why it became the one my Mum least liked me and my brother watching after she actually sat down and watched it with us
The most scary and twisted love song I ever heard.
Everybody a gangsta until the bearded men with hoods chant against them.
Edit: you can see it in his body language especially well, where before the chants begin he has a fierce look in his eyes and a confident posture, but once the chants start you can see his hands shaking and his expression becomes almost fearful. Really sets the tone of desperation for that scene.
I thought you were talking about the KKK
The chanting is "mea culpa", or "my fault". He's afraid of his own conscience.
@@PrincessNinja007
And yet denying any fault on his own, going so far as to blame God's plan, even as his own visions and delusions practically scream it in his face.
It almost looks like he was pleading for his life
So much passion and emotion! I’m still shocked you’re not on Broadway.
I was last Christmas for Home for the Holiday!! 🎅
You should so do some songs from Miss Saigon! Also point of no return from the phantom of the opera! Oh and maybe stars from Les Miserables! Also Roxanne from Moulin Rouge! That would be awesome!
That church backdrop and your body language made it seem like I was watching a character from a Shakespearean story go insane, it's brilliant!
I love how terrifying you look when you’re surrounded in flames, the intensity is amazing!!
Also I just realized when he’s saying “it’s not my fault,”
The hooded figures chant “Mea culpa” (I don’t know how to spell it haha), which if I remember correctly means “my fault”. It’s like he’s trying to justify his actions but everyone’s like “nah dude, this is all on you”
I never noticed??
This is one of my first times listening to this song all the way through, our mom never let us watch this movie when we were little (for obvious reasons ;P)
This cover is epic tho!
Mea Culpa means to confess your sins
Self-loathing religious people are everywhere
You spelled and translated it correctly. (I’m a nerd and speak Latin. Lol!)
Oh good haha! And that’s so cool!! :O
Also it’s says κύριε ελέησον when he says god have mercy which has a similar meaning in Greek
Watching this after Notre Dame actually burned..well, to me it was Hellfire.

This song has always haunted me. It's so dark. Plus, the fact that Notre Dam just burned makes it worse.

This song is such a damn good villain song, because the tone shifts into major keys like how a hero’s song would generally be depicted, just like how Frollo actually believes he is actually the hero of his story.

I agree with Peter, this is an incredibly dark song for kids. Also you put so much emotion into this while singing and it showed. Awesome job! :D

Oh my goodness literally brilliant, I love how you put so much emotion in your voice when you do songs 💛 (also this film actually terrified me as a kid, I don’t blame you for the warning 😂)
Same here, didn't even know this song existed until I went through a disney villain song compilation some time ago! Quickly became one of my favorites though, the absolute raw power behind it is something else.
As a child I never really liked the movie but now I love it and all the fantastic music. And Frollo is definitely the most underappreciated Disney villain. Such a well written and insane character. Most disney villains are a bit to mustache twirling and evil for the sake of being evil. But Frollo is a multi faceted character that projects all his faults on others, while elevating himself over everyone else.
Yes! I, too, was terrified and, somehow, drawn by the character of Frollo at once. This song especially scared me and now I pity the character and the men who inspired the character, as they were as human as we are. Peter Hollens, I think, captured Frollo's mindset as a real person would experience it perfectly, too!
Gives me shivers every time I re-listen... Perfect singing, Mr. Hollens! Thank you!
Beyond the words that I know so well, the body language of Peter just looking at the camera gave me goosebumps. He really captured this son so well

I'm not quite sure why, but your voice sounds very different in this cover. Could it be because the song has a more sinister tone, or it's more intense? Im not sure, but you still rocked it! Been waiting for this one since the Disney Villains medley
Yeah I think he changed his tone to sound more devilish.
I’m not sure if all singers do this, but I definitely put a tiny bit of effort into changing my tone depending on the song/character.
He's mentioned that he trained for opera in college, it feels like he's colored this in a way that is a lot more indicative of that instead of the more pop style that he uses. Which given the style of the song makes sense.
OMG! I noticed that too! I've been wanting him to do this since the villain medley, but it sounded a bit off. I think in the medley he tried to mimic the accent, and in here, he let his normal voice shine through a lot more
+NYCn1nja Glad I'm not the only one who noticed :) I love Peter but this wasn't the song for him in my opinion!!!

This song always sends chills down my spine, I LOVE IT! You did such a good job with this one!
I have never been more attracted to Peter Hollens. This is just too beautiful for words
Why is this song in a G-rated movie xD
_S a m a n K h a n_ in fact, much as this is one of the best Disney soundtracks ever, and much as the original novel Notre Dame de Paris is one of my favorite books, I think Disney should have never use this story. It's just too dark to make it a children's movie, unless you deeply alter and betray it, and still get something too dark for kids to enjoy it and understand it at the same time... and this is exactly what happened. Did you know that in the original story Frollo is a priest and not a judge, Phoebus is already engaged to a young noblewoman, Esmeralda is only 16 years old and both she and Quasimodo eventually die?
S love love love
@@ELisa-qf2mw but basically look at les mis. Hugo likes the worse for his character and especially with les mis honestly it can get depressing at times. So its fine
@@emilyscloset2648 it's fine as a 1800s big classic novel, not as a Disney movie. Just imagine if Disney made ad adaption of Les Mis! Valjean and Fantine would get married? Eponine would survive and become a princess? The barricade people would win? And then what, unicorns all around? Or maybe Cosette would even show some sign of brain activity?
It's just that not every story conveys those ideas and feelings that Disney wants to convey, and when it doesn't, you cannot make it do it.
@@ELisa-qf2mw I didn't realise u were *that* annoyed
His voice is amazing and how he uses it is beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.
Ironically, by proclaiming his righteousness and purity, Claude Frollo demonstrates the first and most dangerous of the seven mortal sins: pride. In the Catholic tradition, pride is the root from which all other sin grows.
Pride mixed with Lust.
This scene is so good that it allowed me as a non Catholic to realize why Pride is the deadliest. If it were just lust, he'd take accountability and seek forgiveness. But he hypocritically thought he was too pure and that any lust he felt was her fault, therefore she's the one that should pay the ultimate price instead of him seeking forgiveness. Pride is the deadliest one because its the one that basically dooms you to always spiral downwards and never change. The cut song "Biggering" that was supposed to be in the lorax has similar themes, in this case it was pride+lust, in that case it was pride+greed. So you could say whenever a character comes off as irredeemable its because pride was "boosting" the other sin
Good point@@wallysullivan9315

Your voice is so well suited for this song. For me it's better than the original. So much strength, passion, hate. Thank you very much for that!
(now I want to see the musical)
You think so? He's really good, though his tone gradually becomes boyish as the song progresses.
wtf no, Frollo's singer communicated the emotion far better and was a much better singer. the emotion here feels very fake
DO NOT DISRESPECT FROLLO LIKE THAT!
He was good but the original was definitely better, Frollo just captures the emotion completely.
@@carbon5362 They're conveying different emotions, I think. The movie version is more nice guy-ish-- Frollo sounds torn, like he's trying desperately not to blame himself. Peter's version, on the other hand, sounds like he knows *exactly* what he's doing. As part of the broader narrative, the former might work better, but as a stand-alone villain song Peter just sounds so much crueler it's terrifying all by itself.

I remember hearing a snippet of this in the villain medley and needing a full version of this never knew you had done it until my friend sent me it today and I'm so happy
Great! Now I literally fell in love with Frollo. 😍😅
I love this song and please do more of your songs from the Disney melody as a full cover
I thought nobody would make a cover of this that I liked as much as Jonathan Young's. I was wrong.
JoshFromGA you should also check out Annapantsu’s cover. I’m so addicted to her voice
Anne's cover is god damn amazing
Elsie Lovelock !!! Her cover is magnificent.
his facial expression is spot on

I felt you,
I saw you,
the sun caught in your golden hair,
was blazing in me out of all control!
I think, that we can all agree, that you rocked this!
Thank you so very much for doing this cover! ^^
