Yes! They maybe supersoldiers, but they are Human too, not machines (yes that was on purpose), so I'm glad they're doing that, it's part of why I prefer the Book form of Halo 1, (halo the flood). I love that he has a personality, and that's what 343 is getting right with his character.

@@mdhdb3171 Master Chief is in his 40s. It makes since by then he would have some kind of reckoning with himself after decades of fighting, plus it just makes him a more interesting character to get to know whats going on his head, as long as it’s in line with his usual stoicism and confidence.
It's like Master Chief is playing with a toy of Master Chief while narrating his adventures.

Chief reciting the events of Halo 4 is actually a heartbreaking moment i didn't expect.
it wasn't his fault, but Cortana's new galaxy can be stopped much easier by chief than the Didact's composer plan.
also just really happy to know they haven't dropped the cortana plotline.
That way there aren't any loose ends.
Indeed, I wasn't expecting that and then they hit you with John recalling what happened, what he thought of it, how he felt because of it, probably that's what he was thinking on the bridge at the end of H4
Still, the whole plotline might be resolved in a book, seems Infinite ks going that direction

Damn. Even though there wasn't much happening externally, Chief's internal thoughts and struggles made me hyped. I'm so glad I preordered this book.
Glad to see that the Created plot has not been abandoned.
It's good to see that the Cortana and the Created are remaining the biggest threat that everyone is doing their best to avoid while simultaneously finding ways to stop them, and that she continues to occupy the Master Chief's mental space. In this regard, the Banished are only a threat because they have opposing means of achieving this goal.
If 343 is going to show the Chief's face, then it must be Steve Downs.!

Fun fact:
The only reason the covenant sent a massive fleet to glass reach was because they mistook it for being the human home world since it had such a large military presence
That's amusing seeming that the covenant thought Earth was another colony world when they attacked it.

It was because (if the lore is still canon) the Covenant attaches a stealth probe to a UNSC ship (piloted by Captain Keyes, no less) as it went back to Reach, and it was so much more developed than any other world the Covenant had seen that they just assumed it to be the homeworld.
In Earth’s case, the small fleet of the Prophet of Regret was just looking for the Ark Portal, and all they knew going in was that it was in human space, and since Regret wasn’t paying too close attention to the rest of the war at that point, he just assumed it was another small colony that he could deal with.

Nice try, ONI. We all know the REAL reason that the covenant attacked with such a massive fleet is because you asked them to because you had genetically enhanced some moa that then broke out, and you couldn't risk another emu war result, so you both agreed to burn the planet and cut your losses

I enjoy Troy Denning as an author, he's better than most who write for movie/TV/video game IPs, but OH MY GOD does Steve Downes add to it. Good writing / storytelling and good narration. It gave me a chill in first couple of sentences.

Really pisses me off that Chief has to get busted down for going AWOL. Like, the dude was the *literal* savior of humanity multiple times over - at the very least three different times - and he gets no recognition for that. There isn't any consideration that the shit he needed to take care of is probably super important and requires his immediate attention. I swear dude, the military STAYS stupid even hundreds of years into the future.
EDIT: Just to clarify how hypocritical the UNSC is, the Master Chief was praised for his insubordination against a UNSC Captain - an O-6 - and that action brought about the rescue of Earth. However, he goes AWOL to find his AI companion who, if she truly is alive poses a threat to the rest of humanity, and he gets blacklisted and has a team of "SPARTAN's" to hunt him down like he is an E-4 who got busted for a barracks meth lab.
Halo 5's story wasn't well-executed. It could have been, but then you wouldn't have had to make that comment.
I mean, Chief is just assuming he'll be punished in some way because the nature of service and duty is all he knows. But it's pretty easy to see the UNSC just forgetting about it whenever things are peaceful again.
its the nature of the beast, plus john isnt just a soilder he legit is unsc property and when your pet goes awol literally one who wrecked an entire civ um id be a bit concerned to but its all apart of onis plan to control the galaxy. with cortana doing what she did it sped up there timeline

I'm just laying here bawling my eyes out to think that Cortana could have ever been responsible for that. Awful that she could or would have done that. That she did do it.
I want so badly for Chief to get her back, for them to be able to go back to how things were, and I don't see how that's possible in light of what's shared in this excerpt.
In the beginning of Halo: Legends she talked about war, all the wars between the Humans and the Convenant and Flood, and wars between Humans. She asked when it would end.
So she did it because she was sick of the war and death, having seen what she saw, and having analyzed all known history. She wanted peace, for everyone.
But peace under her forced rule. Maybe she didn't see how else to do it.
How awful. All of it.
