My father bought this watch in 1998. He gave it to me 7 years ago. I am wearing it everyday since then. He wore it every day, too. 20 years of use, no service - works just fine. Not taken off for swimming or sleeping. It is there and does the job. Amazing.

I just ordered mine today from an online jeweler in Italy. $190.00 (w/ online disc code) got me a SS bracelet and free shipping. I can't wait to get in the water with it, or use it out hiking, or time my mac 'n cheese with it or hand it off to my son in 20 years.

FYI - A good dive watch will have an extremely short hour hand compared to the minute hand. The reason is that when diving, it's critical to have your minute hand jump out at you. Minutes are what matter when diving, not hours.

I like and accept everything of my coke bezel NY085, with module 8204 (hand wind and hacking second hand), including the mechanism flaw in resistance in day changing using the crown.
The only flaws I wish it doesn’t have is the short-hand-syndrome. It makes reading time, distinguishing hour and minute hands a tad slower either day time and especially at night relying on lume.

I have the SKX, this Citizen, the Casio Duro, the Orient Ray 2 Raven, the Vostok Amphibia, the Cressi Manta and I have to say that the look of the SKX is something else unmathced by any other diver, but the Citizen got me like I wasn't expecting it to. I love them all, the Ray is the epitome of perfection, there's not a single mistake there, the Amphibia has so much personality it's crazy, the Duro is just impossible to hate, so much value for the money, and the Manta does the job efficently as you would expect from a company that sells diving related stuff.
Divers are truly amazing to me.

After some time of watching compare videos I bought the Citizen at a diver's shop for € 190,-- . It's a NY0040-09EE build in July 2021 with the updated Miyota work 8204 which is hackable. It looks stunning with the black dial, all elements accurately in place. It holds time that I have to look twice before realizing that it hasn't lost or gained a second during the last 3 days. I wear it 24/7 because it's so comfortable with the crown at the 8 o'clock position and it keeps the watch running accurate. The lume is absolutly readable throughout the night without extra exposure to light in between.
My only complaint is working the crown because it can be a bit fiddly to get it back in. Other than that I'm happy as I can be with my purchase. It will accompany me to Africa next year as my Safari watch.

No contest, The Citizen. Its just beautiful and accurate. Purchased this watch twice before and sold them...Why? Never again. I have the blue dial on the blue rubber, its fabulous. Sits well alongside my Combat Sub, also a brilliant watch in every way. PS. My Citizen has hacked since I got it. It has the characteristic wobble when you shake it but the second does halt when I pull the crown to adjust....Very starnge! Its running at plus 3 a day.

I have one that was bought in 1999 , no idea of manufacture date. It still has the factory stainless bracelet with adjustable clasp ( no idea why the adjuster it is not on every watch in the universe ) . Belonged to my father and I got it when he passed away. It is an excellent watch , never opened , never serviced and keeps excellent time. I think the build quality is very good.. Mine has quite a scratched crystal and a slightly mis-aligned chapter ring , but it is my most prized watch and will never get rid of it for obvious reasons. Also , my caseback is not laser etched , its deeper.

Citizen was dominating Seiko in this price category even before their move to exclusivity and limited, new versions of old designs for a premium price. Add the extra QC issues with Seikos on top of that and it is really a no brainer which brand gives you more bang for your budget tier watch collecting buck.

I'm also a Seiko fan but objectively speaking Citizen is much better brand. I've got two SKX's (007 and 009) and a blue NY0040 (plus black on delivery :D ). For me NY0040 is a better watch in every single way. I've got ten Seiko's and half of them have quality control issues - bezel misalignments, chapter ring misalignments, date misalignments. This sucks completely. My only Seiko's without quality control issues are Japan domestic SARB models. I've got 5 Citizen's and NONE of them has any, even the smallest issue, they are all a way better quality watches. Seiko design is great, I love my Monsters, SKX's but I can't stand their garbage quality. Citizen movements are also much more accurate than Seiko's. My vintage, about 40 years old Citizen Eagle 7 is more accurate than new Seiko's with 4R36 or even 6R15.

Citizen sold it's soul, and Seiko continues to innovate (Spring Drive, etc.). That's why Seiko holds more respect in the watch world, and that's why you own multiple Seiko's despite the QC issues. Seiko is simply a better BRAND, despite the issues you noted. Period. Good review, I agree with you, owning both watches. But you forgot to mention another important feature of the citizen: the strap does have an extra insert in which the springbars are sitting. It is a small metal tube which makes it virtually impossible for the springbars to be torn out of the strap. The skx does not have this feature. Another example for the seriousness of the citizen as a dive watch. Also, the bracelet that can be purchased for the citizen does have a ratchet diver extension (to be fair, it lacks classical microadjustments). The skx's jubilee bracelet, on the other hand, is very comfortable and also prevents the sharp crown guard from digging in my wrist (not so with rubber strap, for whatever reason...)

I wanted a skx. Discontinued and second hand prices were skyrocketing for a (little) oversized watch that has no hack and no hand winding.
I went with a Seiko 5. Misalignment was a kind of funny. But loosing more than 12 sec a day got me very unsatisfied. I had rather prefered gaining 12 secs a day, as it's easier to correct with hack once a week. Still I was forgiving as I thought it was acceptable for that kind of price range.
And then came my lately NY0040 : contained size with aliignment and accuracy. 2023 NY0040 have also hack and hand winding. All for a small price (got mine for roughly 179 $ and I have seen since I could get them even cheaper).
So if Citizen can make it, Seiko defaults are not related to price but to industrial processes and QC flaws.
Even if I love the look of my Promaster, I still slightly prefer the dial of my Seikos 5. But now I feel love for Citizen. Not for Seiko. I am happy to have one Seiko though, but I am done with their nh36/4r36 movement (that includes mircobrands using it).

I have the eco drive version - IMO it’s even better. No mechanical accuracy issues, no battery changes (at least for about twenty years). Im lucky enough to have a Rolex Explorer I love, but I wouldn’t swim with it, these Citizens are perfect for knocking around / sports / beach. At this price point I think going mechanical is risky, any maintenance will cost almost as much as the watch. I normally find a case this size a bit big, but the way these citizen divers are designed, it looks great my 7.2 wrist (probably good down to 6.5).

My NY0040 (black) stays under 4 seconds a day - never taken off - which is pretty good I think. Apart from that, the things I most appreciate about it are the crown in the 8 o'clock position where it NEVER digs into the back of one's hand; and the easily graspable bezel, where putting a thumbnail into one of the slots gives the most secure grip on a bezel I've ever experienced. These are things I could not do without. If I broke it, I'd have to replace it.

I own one. I love the size and the weight. The 60 click bezel is very accurate but clicking feels kind of weird. Keeps very good time and lume is superb. No regrets for the purchase. As for Seiko,my SKX bezel aligns perfectly !!! Am I lucky ? Nice video.

my NY0040 is 13 years old, worn 24/7... less than +2 a day for the first 5-6 years, now its about +5 even though its been dropped more than once, lots of salt water and its more than fair share of general abuse. maby time for a service... if you want a nice looking, simple, strong, durable timepiece you cant go wrong with the citizen.

Good job Watch Geek - I've got a NY0040 and always thought about a SKX but have resisted so far (I'll probably get one soon anyhow). I bought a limited NY0080 recently and was disappointed with the bezel, it was really sloppy in comparison to the NY0040.

I have been looking for a good entry level watch to buy....though I did not buy this watch (but I ended up buying the NH8380-15E & BN0156-05E), I initially did spend days and many hours looking through all the different Seiko 'dive' watches of various designs....such as the Prospex series and Seiko 5 series.....and many of the online shops mainly featued Seiko watches....but somehow, there was just something that kept me from buying a Seiko: strangely, i could not find any affordable Seiko watch that defined me. Then I looked at Citizen, and it didn't take me long to decide why I chose Citizen: it just fitted me. I own a automatic divers 200m Citizen (bought it in 2011; cant recall the model but it has a Red-Blue bezel and it says 21 Jewels), used it till the strap spoilt, the glass surface was scratched....and I just took it out that day to use when my G shock Casio spoilt when it dropped on the floor. It just worked! In a nutshell, somehow I think Citizen, despite lacking in design diversity as compared to Seiko, is top when it comes to precision. And that is one very important factor. And thanks for making this video....gonna keep the two Citizens for my son when he grows up!

Seiko has no answer for this. Actually, Seiko has no answer for the Orient dive watches. Ever since Seiko destroyed their SKX007 diver line, they have nothing to fill this gap. Citizen just has to capitalize on Seiko's arrogance.

My uncle introduced me to the Citizen Brand, back in the late 90s and it has remained my favorite Watch Brand, to date. It seems to be much underrated, among the Tube’s Watch community tho.... and I don’t understand WHY. Although Channels such as this, have made me come to appreciate Seiko Watches... they’re VERY overrated IMO. Jus too many quality issues ( Chapter Rings, Bezels, Short Hands etc. ) All that said, very good review on this Citizen Piece Sir. Honest and Objective... as it should be 👍🏽

I also love the Citizen line up and quality. I did try a Seiko solar watch and man it had such a crappy metal band and poorly finished dial that I had to let it go. But it sold really fast on eBay, thank gosh for those fan boys. Lol

Great news , citizen will release a new ny008 series in October that is exact copy of ny0040 but with diferent hour markings and hands (they did a limited run in September for asia market) , Also orient will release a new series of diver watches AA000, that look like orient mako USA.

    • @Barnaby_bo
      @Barnaby_bo 5 лет назад

So if it's got different hands and different markers it's not "exactly the same" then is it. Why make a stupid comment. Simple fact is the ny0040 is not being produced any more and if you want one your gonna have to pay more and more as time goes on. No doubt about it this watch is a classic.

I own both as well. Each have their strengths and weaknesses. The Seiko movement is an issue as it doesn't perform consistantly off the wrist. As such for the watch collector citizen is the better watch.

this is now on sale, in romania, at around 200$. I'm also looking at the Citizen BN0190-15E Eco-drive Promaster, at around 250$. I'd get them both, but i also got a certina ds8 powermatic 80, which is a real beauty. guess i'll stick to this one, as a fan of automatic watches. i don't find the shortness of the minute hand annoying or the flouresence differences, this is actually pretty cool. i'm looking for sporty and it appears this matches my needs.
    Subscribed !!!!

Good review and I agree with your opinion. My citizen pro master with dark blue sunburst dial gets more wrist time than my SKX. But there is one big disappointment, there are no aftermarket bracelet with fitting end links. I don't like bracelets with straight end links.

If you follow the industry close Seiko is dropping the ball and riding its name as of late. Nothing against Seiko, there nice but Citizen has been beating them for a while and being overlooked for it. The typical I’ve got a Rolex syndrome. I’ve got a Seiko. Do you have a better watch? Not anymore. Citizen is growing and on the move. Great review.
