This video is the most valuable source of information I have ever heard as a 78 year old golfer. I struggled with too much flipping of the wrists at impact and no teaching pro over 50 years ever once mentioned this concept during my lessons. Consequently, I could never have consistent ball striking and consistent scores.

This is what I’ve been trying to work out for a year. Nobody talks about the position when the club is 4-6” past the ball position. It doesn’t matter if you hit the exact back of the ball if 4”s later you are off line, that’s a hook or slice or push. If you hit the exact back of the ball and 4” later the face is still pointing at the target, that’s where the ball goes.....with every club in the bag! Nicely explained and as a 54 yr old, I’ll just do my best to bend that much. 😂

    Hi jonathan.
I am a 41-year-old bogey player living in Korea. I have been taking golf lessons regularly once a week for the past two years and practicing every day. Those hours were not rewarded and I tried every day to improve my golf but failed. But today, after watching this video of yours, all my questions were answered at once, and all the frustrations and concerns I had been experiencing found answers at once. I feel like I have found the final piece of the 1000*1000 puzzle called golf. Thank you so much. With the clues you gave me, I will reach an even higher level. I am sending you this expression of sincerity with a very grateful heart. I hope you are always happy. thank you very much. sincerely.

This is the most important golf video you'll ever watch. This works incredibly well to get your club face on the ball and send it straight toward the target. The one thing is that it is VERY difficult to do, as Jonathon mentions in another video.

wow I haven't seen anyone even trying to slow-mo the pro swing in real-time. That's a feat in itself. What I'm taking from this is get right shoulder down, head almost horizontal while keeping the left hand ahead as long as possible at all cost.

Jonathan, This is really interesting advice. I have a lot of trouble with hitting fat shots, flipping of the wrist and an early collapse of the left elbow leading to erratic shots. I just tried your tip here in the backyard and noticed I stopped taking divots behind the ball. Not only that, I was able to stop the left elbow collapsing at impact (I am right handed). Can’t wait to get back on the course once we get through this pandemic. I hope all my fellow golfers and families out there stay well.....

Outstanding video! I have been obsessed with ideas and drills for fixing early extension, forward shaft lean, clearing the hips, getting the chest open, squatting down, head moving down, and delaying the strike (casting at the bottom). This is the best explanation I have seen for relating all these concepts and WHY it is important to get the hips open at impact. Thank you!

A really good thing to do, in order to feel this... Take an extremely strong grip, and make yourself start the ball right, or hit a low fade. You'll be forced to rotate more, and to add a lot more side bend than what you're used to. You'll also have no choice but to have your hands ahead at impact. You'll need to feel like you're karate chopping the ball, with your left hand. If you roll, or release too early, your ball is going LEFT. This will take more flexibility than what most of us have, but it will give you an idea of what someone like D.J. is feeling. Another note... People with a "weaker" grip need to bow the left wrist at impact, to have their hands ahead of the ball. This also twists the club face closed, so you don't need a "roll" of the forearms to hit it square. It amazes me that D.J. does BOTH(strong grip, bowed left wrist). This takes an amazing amount of flexibility, and ability to "rotate". Experiment with these things. You'll be surprised how well your body will adjust, just by the position of the hands.

Just more great tips that can actually change peoples game. I do think this clip only applies to a very small number of people. If you don't understand the release, and able to do it, then your a dead duck on these moves. I also see body types, balance and flexibility as a real impediment to most golfers today, preventing them from actually reproducing these moves. Anyhow I love the lesson and thanks for the work. The clip you gave surrounding the release has brought me back to a good player once again it was so good, and just the item I needed to work more on. Once you hit a few poor shots in this game, you change the release until you compensate and hit it okay, but the changed release is only a band-aid that never holds up for any length of time. Now I'm back on track.

Hey, you are by far the best at explaining what is actually happening during a golf swing, the physics, forces the club is apply to the golfer and viceversa. I have watched almost all your videos and completely changed my swing over the winter break. Thank you for the great work. I have applied all your teachings, start downswing early before backswing is completed, go into the sitting position, hand path to the left keeping lag tension etc.......... my issue is the middle section of it all..... from the early transition "the move" to the hands by the right hip. You have mentioned before the hand path is like a racing track, initial straight away followed by turning the corner. My issue in the straight away before we get to the corner. I'm confused on how to get there. Lose the angel in the right elbow but maintain lag with pressure. I feel like that pushing down losing the angle in right elbow is the right thing to do to get the club back on plane but having a hard time with putting that whole middle section together with the rest of the swing.

I had tried to get to the right impact position for many years. Took many lessons and done swing analysis from golf professionals, watch many RUclips videos on shaft lean and lag. I practiced maintaining right wrist extension, palm face down, adding spine tilt, delaying hit, you name it, but nothing seemed to work for me. Just watched your videos on “The Position” a few days ago and gave it a try at home indoors without a ball (All golf courses and driving ranges are closed due to virus). Noticed my hands are well ahead of the ball at impact, and at least four inches forward compared to my previous swings. Bowing of the back, pushing the hips back and keeping right shoulder and head down do the trick for me. Can’t wait to try it with a real ball on the course or the range. Will need to groove it in.

The body is a multiple universal joint system. The key is to understand the line of compression and to engineer the machine from that point. On plane motion is efficient. Pivot : angular motion. Hips lead club head lags and resists. You want to generate and sustain the lag pressure. At release the club seeks its inline condition with the lead arm. Any bend in the lead wrist destroys the angular motion. The club actually slows down.

Excellent realistic instruction, thanks JT. You nailed it on the head for early extenders at 10:52, “are you kidding I’ll hit it fat”. I’ve been working on this very thing for four years with very limited success. How many times have I’ve hit myself in the face with my own divot trying this move. Not much fun. Yet I continue to try and get there with drill after drill in the gym, range, or backyard. They are all pretty good looking until time to hit the ball. Fat is not really the word, more like excavating as much turf as possible while advancing the ball a few feet. It’s no wonder you see thousands of horrible swings out there, guys just giving up on this difficult move just to get around the course and post a decent score.
Hey all you commenters: If you guys have developed a bulletproof move to accomplish what JT is talking about how sharing with the rest of us. Saying thanks for the video is nice but 90% of commenters are saying this. Do we need hundreds of comments that only say thanks. Maybe share a drill or exercise that has worked for you. I know why Gankas has a great following. Can’t get in the right position? No problem my assistants will physically put you in the correct position. I’ve thought about driving out there myself to correct early extension/lack of rotation. Continuing to grind.

I am loving your concept of "The Position" in just about every aspect of the golf swing, including full swings, pitches, chips, and putting. I feel like I'm about ready to take my game to a new level through your instruction of the Position. Thank you for that. Let me just pass you a tidbit of some understanding that I got from another instructor, where he spoke about the "Body Bracing Pattern" aspects of the swing. It's the point at where the body stops, firms up, and begins moving away from the target to provide impetus and speed to the swing. I'm thinking I see this body bracing and pattern as what might be happening in achieving the position as well. It feels like The Position is improved by also feeling the maximum body bracing at that point as well. Does that make sense to you also? Thank you.

I think you have given a master class on why most all tour players are getting injured on a regular basis compared with their predecessors of decades ago.
The illustration of the spine shape with the alignment stick should be obvious to everyone that the body is not designed to do that. Also severe downward head movement with the lower body jumping up can only lead to spine compression. I read a statistic that PGA tour players are out injured more often that American Football players. Also that many realise they will have long term health issues and be out of the game in their mid thirties but have a healthy bank account. Strange choice. I think your next video should have a disclaimer 😀🏌️‍♂️

My practice swing is inside to out, brushes the grass and wraps around the back of my neck and I could not possibly stop it doing so without incurring an injury. But put a ball there, and I go steeply into the ground, following through about a foot.

Tour players get anywhere from 20* to over 60* open with their hips. It is a huge range.

Let me try it over the Covid period at home. I get the feel that it cd give more time & room for the throw or whip starting a foot or so before impact !! My amateur thought only.

Lovely explanation of the pro impact position here from Jonathon. The video seems to have gathered some criticism with regard to being a cause of back and other injuries. In practice if this swing and the positions it requires is taught and practiced well it will put the least amount of stress on the back, particularly the low back. The lower back (lumbar spine) only possesses the ability to rotate between 5-7 degrees even in the likes of Rory , Dustin and Justin etc. The facet (zygapophyseal) joints at the lumbar spine actively block rotation. The spine’s rotational ability is very different at the mid back (thoracic spine) and neck (cervical spine) where the anatomy of the vertebrae maximise rotation. Along with the hips it is these regions that facilitate rotational movement in the golf swing. If the sequencing of the swing is done well as Jonathon describes it will put the least stress on all of these areas. However, if you do have significant mechanical restriction at your hips or spine you might not be able to achieve these positions in full. I stood and watched a man in his 80’s a couple of years ago hitting mid-irons on a practice area doing these moves exactly applying them within his own range of movement. He didn’t have the range of movement of the pro’s or probably his younger self but he struck the ball beautifully with a lovely compressed impact. Think how many golf balls pro’s hit in their lifetime and compare this statistically with how many develop significant back problems. It’s a really low percentage!

Ive just bought myself an inexpensive selfie stick that has a tripod and a small remote .
Video yourself with you smartphone. It's amazing to see what you are ACTUALLY doing compared with what you THOUGHT you were doing!

Good observation. No amateur golfer swings like that. The two important points are you have to give yourself time for your weight to shift to the front heel before your arms come around. The second is you have to think about hitting behind the ball because if your on top of it your going to pull the ball.

I wish I had you tube 20 years ago I would have juiced all over this and be smashing it. Look I could do it now but after two swings I would be in a wheelchair.
I love this position and will try my best to get 20% of this and my swing will be the better for it.

The pros are so good because it's what they do for a living along with hours & hours of practice for years.

Check out photos of Lee Trevino in his prime. His shoulders are nearly vertical thru impact!

The swing hinges in the hips. The advantage is the ability to use the right hand.
