    Just before May 11 this year (2019), I was stuck on an Australian handicap of 14.5 when I happened upon Jonathan's 3 tips for a perfect release. His clear description of the correct hinging of the right wrist was a revelation. In the 11 rounds since, coming into winter, I've had eight rounds under 87, the best 81. I've added 20m to 40m to my drives, the best measured being over 235m. I'm 69 years old. My handicap is now 10.7. I hope you get to read this comment, Jonathan. A big thank you.

    I've watched this three times now this week it's so good. I play like this today, but still need to refresh myself with the fundamentals all the time. I wish I had known this 30 years ago because that part about the left shoulder pulling the club up in order to better release the face and add some speed, is something that took me at least TEN years of hitting it very poorly much of the time. I used eye hand coordination as an athlete for so long that is a hit and miss proposition at best. Wonderful break down of the parts of the swing here. Keep up the good work.

    Your video has helped me more than any that I have ever watched. I have heard others talk about keeping the back to the target as long as possible. That confused me! I tried it and failed miserably. Your explanation that in fact it's the left shoulder not the back to the target. I applied that to my swing with amazing results. What a difference. THANK YOU!Ron Piko

    I’m not sure if I missed this video the first time around as I have been a subscriber for a while, but I’m at a loss as to how it is possible that there are so many dislikes to this video. This is one of the best explanations I have ever seen for the move and all its parts. Most tubers have a difficult time with this. You mention how some people advocate keeping the back to the target. Rory sometimes advocates using his hips more to go after it. Most people will never understand it but you have explained this phenomenon very well here. It’s more about resistance and release than a visualization of over active hips throughout the downswing. Good job and thanks.

      New RUclips rule: in order to hit the thumbs down button you have to explain why in the comment section. Not a simple comment such as “because,” but a thoughtful well articulated explanation. After all, someone took the time to plan, execute, and submit a video. You shouldn’t be able to just be a jerk by hitting thumbs down and move on.

    One of the best clips I've ever seen regarding golf. I've always thought the release is critical in becoming a good striker of the ball but almost no teachers ever deal with it much less emphasize it. Great lesson. What bothers me to no end is that when you actually hit the ball it was ...let's just say, less than optimal. It was a poor, weak strike of no compression, no divot and no club head hitting AFTER the ball. It's great info, but a less than impressive example. Anyhow, keep up the great work. I'm a three handicap and work on the release concepts all the time. That's when I started to get to be a much better player.

    Great Video..This was the video I was looking for...I take practice swings, with relasing my club at bottom of my arc...I listen for the swoosh noise at the bottom, the louder the swoosh the more speed I get....For my swing at the bottom, my head and eyes are fixed at bottom of arc, and I feel the top of my right hand turn over and face up towards the sky, timing my release at impact.....does this sound about right...PS...Always stretch for wrist, hands, before to insure felixability for better releasing....

      Stop trying to hold the club to create lag, lag is produce by a chain of movements ending with the sinking of the head in the downswing. More coming shortly:)

    Love this video. Is the left shoulder actively pulling the club all the way through impact or has it effectively slowed/stopped and that slings the clubhead into impact.

  • @tomeldridge2915
    @tomeldridge2915 2 года назад +1

    For me personally, getting to p6, or when the club is Parallel to the ground in the downswing was not the most difficult part. My struggle was reaching the post impact position where both arms are extended. Jonathon points out the need to continue rotating the upper body. My best results are the feeling of extension as the arms decelerate. And for me, that means pointing my chest toward the sky. However you describe it it is about not allowing the left side to break down. If the left side does break down the result is a flip/chicken wing. I wish I had Jonathon’s ability to articulate.

    Jonathan, as I’m sure you know, the shoulder action you aptly speak on is called “protraction.” There are some golf swing theorists who think protraction was a significant part of Hogan’s fabled secret, and in my study of the golf swing, I agree whole heartedly! Furthermore, I feel that protraction (and depression) of the shoulders is best set intentionally in place at address, and (forgive me for contracting you somewhat) KEPT IN PLACE through out the entirety of the swing. I know that most pros today do not keep the protraction, but I think it’s a dynamic worth experimenting with. Perhaps the most commonly cited dynamic of Hogan’s swing is the way in which his upper arm seemed to be pinned to his torso/upper rib cage. Protracted of the shoulders, which causes the contraction of the serratus anterior muscles, essentially causes this biomechanical “lock down” and basically makes the upper arms and chest into a single unit in which, while still allowing the elbow and wrists to be supple and free. Add in forearm rotation, a great pivot (which you aptly describe here and elsewhere) and voila ... one becomes a ball striking machine!
    I love your work and discussions!

    • @nelsonjames1272
      @nelsonjames1272 4 года назад

      jean fraysse it is difficult to feel all the move without going full speed. Your arms will drop naturally if you resist with your hips properly. It is complicated, and you have to more or less discover it with practice. But the best way to find it is by focusing on creating shaft lean throughout the swing. Strong core muscles and staying in posture is paramount. Good luck with it. When you get it you get it. Your speed will increase dramatically. Also, think of a trebuchet and how it works. Substitute your arms and body.

Would it fair to say you rotate your shoulders slightly less through impact, and you swing your hands past your body through impact a little bit more than most very good golfers? In no way am I suggesting anything is wrong with your swing, I was just wondering if you agree with me.

    Unfortunately for you Jonathan, I will be keeping this a secret from my fellow golfers so I can empty their wallets! ; )

    Pushing down with your right arm you mentioned? I assumed all these years that the right handed golfer swings with with his left arm (DOMINANT) arm, is there something am missing here?

      If you have two arms why not use both:) When we are describing what one body part is doing don't think that everything else is doing nothing. Often one body parts actions are easier to feel because they are more difficult or need more exertion, on top of that everybody's feelings are different.

      Ben Hogan said he wished he had two right hands.
