  • A DSP, or Digital Signal Processor, allows us to control time alignment, crossovers, and Equalizers for each speaker in a car audio system. This allows us to fully tune a car audio system to optimize performance, but there are some common misconceptions about DSP that people don't really understand. Let's clear them up!

    A huge misconception in car audio is not to use loudness and take the *Fletcher-Munson curves / Equal-loudness contour* into consideration (acoustically) because, we need those curves to listem to all the frequencies at the same levels so *it sound "flat"* to our ears. Once your sound it's properly adjusted and with loudness on, you use the EQ to cut (no to boost) the excess frequencies.

  • @firstlast7152

    Being able to set crossovers digitally and with exact slopes vs analog potentiometers was well worth it to me. Even if I'm not going in and doing much EQ or time delay stuff. The accuracy and the ability to choose my slope strength and type, and the fact that I didn't have to deal with buying passive crossovers/bass blockers/etc, yeah. Cheap $120 DSP made it worth it even if I'm not going full audio tune. I could immediately hear the difference once I installed it and had it take over for handling crossovers.
    The 80/20 rule definitely applies to car audio. Where we can get about 80% of the best quality by spending about 20% of total possible cost and time, whereas to get that final 20% of quality it'll require an additional 80% of not just money, but time/effort.

    Nice video!
    I've been using active crossovers for 5 years
    To protect the tweeters I use capacitors bigger than the designed freguency cut, something about 8 ir 10 micro farad, is more than enough to cut low frequencies and noises from amps and system.
    Never had problems

  • @bmuenter
    @bmuenter 2 года назад +4

    One of the biggest downfalls of the audio control product is that the crossovers are global...meaning all the "different tunes" you create have to share the same crossover slopes and values. So if you have multiple tunes for different reasons like top and top down on a convertible, or a Jeep top on and no top, the crossovers have to remain the same. LITERALLY NO OTHER COMPANY IN THE INDUSTRY DOES THAT, THAT'S STUPID. If you want more volume with the top off or down, you are going to have to readjust your gains, crossover points, and even make some EQ adjustments. You know that to go louder and to get less distortion you have to set your crossover points higher.
    They need to change that...and catch up with the industry, or make a running change in their products or software.
    Great videos by the way! 🤘🇺🇲

    I have the Twk-88 DSP (along with my RD900/5) and I love it. I wasn't introduced to AudioControl until after my install in my car was done months later. That said, DSP makes a world of difference and with the right setup... it can almost sound like a studio, but in your car. I said almost. My Challenger sings so wonderfully now. • @WildMidwest1
      @WildMidwest1 3 месяца назад

      Not to get into the parametric vs graphic EQ “which is better” argument, but not one in a thousand car drivers have the experience using high quality parametric EQ that a professional electric guitarist or sound engineer would have. Even the majority of audio installers would not know how to adjust para EQ optimally, and the results would likely suffer.
      Graphic EQ better fits the target audience for AudioControl products. This company is not chasing highly experienced sound studio crowd. This is consumer grade merchandise targeted at above average audio consumers, not studio pros. The price reflects that market position.

    I'm a little confused, as quite a few Pioneer receivers have not only a custom EQ setting, but also crossover adjustments for subwoofer and full range. I get that this example DSP is far more advanced, but for beginners on a budget, the receiver controller isn't completely horrible.

    • @kaffeewerks9609

      That is a lot better than nothing but sending a full-range signal to a driver that cannot physically play that sound or play without distortion is the real point of DSP. You 100% should be sending only subfrequencies to a subwoofer. Imagine installing lovely tweeters to only play a full-range signal through them and they sound like crap without DSP or a physical crossover that restricts the wrong frequencies from getting to it.

    For the budget build its possible to use an aftermarket radio DSPs like the pioneer in this video but you'd have to run in network mode and only run a front stage. So you'll have full control over the front tweeters, front mids speakers and sub individually for time alignment. crossovers for each pair. Only real negative is the EQ still will effect everything together and not individually. In a single cab or extended cab truck it would work out pretty good not perfect but on a budget it'll get it done great.

    • @bigk7788
      @bigk7788 2 года назад

      @@chuckw6099 actually stand alone DSPs will be fazed out at some point. Like I mentioned before sony has the new es line with a comprehensive dsp built in. Now its just an early attempt at it and once other companies start to step up and compete with sony that's when all the typical dsp features will show in aftermarket radios. As for people that have to keep the oem radio they'll typically run an audio control amplifier with a built in dsp. Eventually other manufacturers will follow suit and offer amplifiers with built in DSPs. Stand alone DSPs was needed because of the technology that was available at the time but, now with how amplifier and head unit technologies have advanced it's to the point now that a standard double radio can have a full dsp and a fairly powerfully built in 5 channel amplifier. Just look at how small some of those micro amps are getting. Right now yes stand alone DSPs are needed but give it time.

    Very good explanation!!! Couple of issues I'm having though with DSPs and Epicenters/bass processors. I have a Stetson Bluetooth processor that I'm considering installing before my preamps to clean up the sound from the head unit before any further amplification. I'll have 4 channels of selectable A, B and AB outputs (or combined as 2 since 1 output has to be split to connect an amp from one output. Meaning 1&2 would be a left and right if used straight). Using it this way I could tune channel 1 however I like and run it to the preamp let's say on the right input, #2 however would be on the left input both controlled by the preamp fader as a mids and highs preamp. Channels 3 and 4 would go to the inputs of the second preamp for midbass/midrange and bass. I think this would increase my tuning capabilities. I also think DSPs have the same features as Epicenters. Select the frequency in the parametric EQ (sweep), adjust it's Q (wide), boost or cut, adjust gain, etc. with tons of more tuning options. The preamps I use have subsonic filters from 30-300hz.

    how are you ensuring the output signal from amplifier is the signal, from, that you set at the dsp ? How do you know the gains, and frequency buttons on the amp, are not over riding the dsp, and sending out a freq, signal that I'd not what you set with the dsp ? I'm assuming the reason behind using a rta ? is to check for and adjust the dsp, but not the amp settings? Or both ? is the rta, the factor, for output from amp, frequency check and confirm?

    Another point with those passive crossovers is the protection it gives you with the tweeter. One main reason why I use them. It takes out the extra work and math to figure out what in line capacitor you need for the tweeters if you are going active (IMO)...

    • @chuckw6099
      @chuckw6099 2 года назад +3

      I don't believe in active crossovers for the mids and tweeters. Manufacturers spend a great deal of time matching drivers with passive crossovers. I only use active crossover settings for cutting out low pass.

    • @georgesrisomsak9650
      @georgesrisomsak9650 2 года назад

      It can go either way with a passive setup. That depends on user experience and aptitude. A passive setup can take time, to truly understand power levels at different crossover points. I've fried more than a couple sets of tweeters, and mid-bass drivers, learning power level differences from 3k and to 5k and up on the tweets, and around 100hz and up for midbass, and 150hz and up for midrange. There's more power than you think going to a tweeter crossed at 3k, and more power going to a midrange at 150hz. Especially when you have a whole lot of power on tap.
      I've learned exactly where my amps and drivers are, and have them set close to their thermal capacity, but behind the line, slightly conservative. Right to the line, but behind it a small bit. An initial tune independently, then again all together to blend it all. Active is the way to go in my opinion, capacitors and passive crossovers is old tech. Send exactly the signal you want, pure, no distortion, no time or phase delay, added inductance or termination points that create resistance.
      Sonic purity can't be obtained without one, in my opinion.

    How do you time align subwoofers?

    • @abelscaliber7969
      @abelscaliber7969 2 года назад

      You measure how far it is from your listening position in either Inches or meters
      Then let’s say it’s 56in, you input that value in the dsp
      If you have multiple subs then just use the average distance
      It honestly doesn’t make that much of a difference

      If I set the right subwoofer at 24.1 inches it doesn’t allow me to add a value for the Left sub. Like you said I don’t think it makes much of a difference so I left it off are the subs being that it’s low frequencies and they are not as directional has a speaker

    • @PURESOUND4
      @PURESOUND4 2 года назад

      You don't just time align subs, you align ALL speakers so the sound from each speaker arrives at your ears at the same time. In most vehicles, the sub is furthest away, so what happens (without any DSP) is sound from closer speakers (like front doors) arrives first, and then a few milliseconds later the lows from the sub arrive, resulting in sloppy midbass. To fix it you apply delay to the front speakers, so they "wait" on the lows to travel a bit, and then play, so their sound arrives at your ears at the same time as the lows, which results in a tighter overall sound, especially around the crossover point.

      Depends. If you set the clarion to Zero for all adjustments before you do the calibration using your DSP, and if your adjustments for the DSP are focused entirely on correcting speaker response to create a flat output profile, then the clarion be adjusted to taste for bass/treble as suited for the music at hand.

    Many mid level head unit, following what has happened with many China's android head unit, now are starting to have 5 or 7 RCA out with high, low, band pass filters, 21+ bands (sometimes even full parametric) equalizer per each channel and delay per each channel... All this while retaining a global system equalizer for rapid on the go changes.
    Heck, I've tried a nice Chinese one that had 7 channels, all the filter delay and equalizer per channel and the eqqualizer coulb be chosen between "normal" and linear phase mode. It benched great, sadly only 2V output and only a -70 dB noise floor even while reproducing directly from file.
    But I'm sure Dsp will soon be dead, cpu are so powerful that specialized audio dsp chip are no longer needed, just need software (amply available) and GOOD FREAKING ANALOGUE INTERFACES. Lol

    I have a question as I am looking for information regarding the standalone AudioControl DM-608 DSP + an external 6-channel amp vs. the AudioControl D-6.1200 DSP integrated amp.
    I need a 6-channel amp for mids/highs and a 1-channel amp for subs.
    Please note: I have one chance to get this installation right!
    Audio quality and fidelity is my focus, but like most others, I want to end up with a system that can get very loud, hit very hard and deep, but stay as clean as possible.
    Audio signal source will be 'speaker level', from my stock Mercedes console.
    *It's a new vehicle and do not want to throw out integrated system and screen.
    Budget is NOT unlimited, so please keep that in mind with any advice.
    *I am sure there are 'better' choices on amps and speakers than what I have listed.
    I am open to suggestions, within reason.
    So...
    Which option should I buy and why??
    Option 1:
    AudioControl DM-608 + JL Audio XD600/6v2 + Rockford Fosgate T1000-1bdCP
    or Option 2:
    AudioControl D-6.1200 + Rockford Fosgate T1000-1bdCP
    Option 3:
    ???
    Am losing anything with the integrated DSP vs. stand-alone DSP or visa versa??
    Price is nearly identical between the two options.
    The JL amp is a bit low on RMS power for speaker choice. 6 x 75W RMS @ 4ohms.
    The AudioControl amp is a bit high power RMS. 6 x 125W RMS @ 4ohms.
    Rockford Fosgate T1000-1bdCP - 1,000 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms
    *Current component speakers are 3.5-ohms, handling 100 watts RMS (400 watts peak)
    My current speakers:
    3 pairs of Infinity Kappa Perfect 600 6.5" component speakers
    2 Rockford Fosgate Power T1D210 Subs
    (I may run 2 - Power T1D212 rather than 10s, but undecided. Space available is allocated location for proper size cabinet may be an issue)
    This is being installed in a 4x4 customer built Sprinter Van used for various short and long term adventures.
    I have space to make a few adjustments if needed, but it is not unlimited due to the appliances required for #VanLife living.
    For those interested in additional details that should help audio performance inside and out of the van:
    The component speakers will be installed in front (doors/dash), mid and rear zones of the van.
    Subs will be installed in customer ported cabinets.
    Subs will either be side or down down firing, just behind midline of van.
    Rockford subs set to 1-Ohm each, run in series, Rockford amp will see 2-ohm load.
    The van is fully lined with dynomat and densely insulated with Havelock wool and 3M Thinsulate.
    Thank You!!!
