Runrig have been my favourite band since I saw them at the Loch Lomond concert in the early 1980's. I think that Runrig have had a very important role to play in the raising of Scottish pride. As a radio presenter, whenever I play Runrig on my shows I always get phone calls asking who was that band. I have even organised radio station listeners trips to see the band when they have been touring.
The Loch Lomond concert was in 1990 or 9.They went a bit stale after that in my humble opinion, I heard them at the Barrowlands in 1985 and again in1986 when they were at their peak.
I'm mad for Runrig--didn't know they did this song and I have to say it's a rousing version of the Dylan classic! Thanks so much for posting...now on to forward it to me darlin' daughter (who "discovered" the band and made me a fan).
Whoa...I was listening to a bunch of Runrig, then I wanted to listen to this song, so I typed it in. I didn't know Runrig did this song...when this came up, I was like, "YES".
The times . . . was one of their extras some years ago. It's releashed on a special limited edition CD from BBC Music. The album is called "The archive series" - BBC session and live at Royal Albert Hall, Glasgow '96
This was a favourite song of mine when I was younger (runrig's cover, not the original), and the song does seem to run strong parallels with recent scottish history.
This is from a period where Runrig did REALLY good B sides to their singles. If you haven't looked at the B sides, have a good look there are quite a few tracks which don't appear on anything else (except on the bonus CD with certain Long Distance albums)
@RunrigFan But only on the 12 inch and CD versions - never managed to get either sadly, its one of the few things that my Runrig vinyl collection is missing, along with Protect and Survive on CD
@MrBear1873 Mr Bear they were just putting their own stamp on the song and paying some tribute to Dylan. I understand this sounds nothing like when Dylan did it. Many people like me totally love this as a completely different way to enjoy the song. Are you really going to quit loving Runrig because they did one song in a way that you don't approve of? That would be appalling.
Well, when you come right down to it, most of Dylan's versions of Dylan's songs are appalling. I think this cover is full of heart, and a sincere reactivation of what the song is supposed to be conveying, for a whole new time and place. Or excuse me, a new time in a very old place.
The best version in my view, Bob Dylan writes good songs but i don't find him as great a singer like Donnie. I still think Donnie Munro is in the top 10 of greatest singers of all time.
when Dylan wrote this and sang it it was totally new, and inspired a whole generation! I was 14/15 when I heard Dylan doing this it was a revelation, before he went electric. Runrig's version was two and a half decades later! Dylan had to sing his songs as no-one else could! Different times fur fcuk sake! Dylan couldn't sing, nor play the guitar, nor even the harmonica, according to many! That is those who didn't really get was happening AT THAT TIME! This is a decent cover that is all! It is surely a generational thing! I have for many decades now judged most song writers and their music against Dylan! The total package was brand new! Check out his early albums, Bob Dylan, Times they are a changin', Another Seide of Bob dylan, before he went electric! I'll leave it at that!
Do you know than Sony refuse to me ( to my country, Canada) the right to listen this song cover by Tracey Chapman ??!! I don't know why and they don't explain why they do that. They just take it off of my quicklist or playlist etc Is there someone who know why they do that ?? Vevo did the same last month and now it's Sony.... Maybe they don't like people living in Quebec, Canada... coz people speak french?? It's really frustrating because i pay for buying the Chapman's CD's !!!
This is the first time that I have heard this version and I love it
TOTALLY BRILLIANT !!!
This is the Best cover version I have ever herd of this song.......

The line it is drawn
The curse it is cast

this was better than phil collins's version and it was cool that they said ministers rather than senators and congressmen
is it wrong to say that Runrig did a better job then Bob Dylan? I always kind of liked this song but now I LOVE it.
Try Flogging Molly's version for Amnesty? Vid clip is on YT

I'll leave it at that!
you mean single top singer of all time...
That sounds like gummy bears intro
had serious potential but the friggen background muxic is so loud i can barely here the lyrics.

Donnie's is not a voice for a protest song imo. No disrespect intended. I'm not sure I would enjoy Bruce covering this song either.
To each his own
Penny Thomas shut up
Better than Dylan's version in my opinion
Get a grip for fucks sake
BETTER THAN DYLAN
i prefer Bob Dylan's
this suck you now what .. bob dylans is 110 milions % times better ! btw its got irish tune dont you think ?
