    Heartbroken at Bruce passing away. He sang this at the first Runrig concert I attended, he was brand new to the band and so was I. I fell in love with the song.
    Later, I sang this to my daughter when I was pregnant with her, and then when she was a baby. She is now 24 years old and Bruce is no longer with us. Rest in peace, you talented man. X

    This says a great deal about the Scots being able to embrace a new front man from such a beloved band. I'm a new fan, I love Celtic music and collect all manner of it, but especially Scottish. Being Scottish American I want to learn and understand as much as I can. This work is amazing and Donnie Munro vocals soar, being a new fan I love both of these guys voices, a win, win. Thanks for the Post.

    After listening this switch to capital fm and listen for as long as bearable, after that listen to this again and compare. Wish more brilliant music like this was in the mainstream consciousness rather thant the stuff you see on tv and radio.

    This is exquisite, the definitive male version, equal to Connie Dover's female version!! I am delighted Runrig has honored this great lament with a SUBLIME INTERPRETATION & PERFORMANCE!!! I would expect no less. Love the pedal steel! @Softrockman, If this sounds like Frankie Valee or Berry Gibbs, what's your idea of soft rock, Metallica?? FYI, not all Americans sing like sock puppets!!! I now fully understand why Billy Joe & other great artists won't do their sweet & tender stuff in concert!!!

    It's on Bruce Guthro's solo CD "Celtic Crossing." I can't find it on a Runrig CD, but it may be on one. This is a very nice live version so I'd like to find it somewhere too, but the studio version on "Celtic Crossing" is also beautiful.

      @@sherylleenoble The Water is Wide: a 'live' version is on the Runrig CD single, "The Message." (1999). It's also on the, "Access All Areas Volume 1" CD (this album was a 'fan-club only' release of rare tracks). Copies of the eleven volumes in the series occasionally show up on eBay.

    Bruce has a very good voice, easy on the ear, but his style is more American 'country' imo. Something about the phrasing, intonation, not sure how to describe it. I don't want to provoke anyone - I'm really glad the band is continuing to thrive - but Donnie's voice is more Celtic in tone, shape, whathaveyou, and suits the Runrig music better. I'd love to hear DM's version of this song!

    @Softrockman You obviously don't know what falsetto is!! Bruce doesn't use falsetto in this song and, off the top of my head, I can't recall him using it in any Runrig song.

    • @TristanandIsolt

      It's a great song and I'm happy to have it. Ripoff might have been the wrong word. Very similar to Carrickfergus. Honestly I'm not certain which came first.

      If anybody is Runrig it would be Rory. However, I would much rather have all of them. What would Runrig be without Malcolm Jones. Runrig is still Runrig whether Bruce or Donnie are singing.

    The water is wide seems very much like a rip off of Carrickfergus.

    • @dandelionroot8396
      @dandelionroot8396 9 лет назад +4

      TristanandIsolt Wouldn't you say that within the folk tradition "ripping off" a song isn't so much a thing? One definition of folk songs is that it is songs for the folks and by the folks, so there may be many different versions of the song by many different musicians and it may be impossible to track down where and when and by who it was started.

    • @TristanandIsolt

      +Dandelion Root Same tune and similar lyrics. I agree there is room for both songs. If I could only have one it would be Carrickfergus.
