I was 14 when "Undertow" was released, and, it blew me away. I'm 43 now, and, it still blows me away every time I listen to it. An absolute classic of Prog-Metal.

My wife (RIP) was a huge fan of them. I knew some of their mainstream stuff, but she introduced me to some less known songs of theirs. That being said, I am not familiar at all with their full catalog but love how talented they are. I'm looking forward to taking this journey with you to see what I too have been missing. I like your approach and personality in your videos. 👍

First off, so sorry for your loss. ❤️💔 I love that you're able to dive into her favourite music!! That's beautiful, and I don't think you'll be disappointed. They contain so much emotion and they capture human evolution with sound, it's fascinating.
I also lost my fiancé at 23 years old, and we had attended a Tool concert together in 2007. I recently found the concert on RUclips, and it's surreal for me to watch it and think that somewhere in that video, he's alive. In that video somewhere, he and I are both happy and singing. ❤️
Cheers to you, and prayers for your beautiful wife. 🙏 I hope your Tool journey is as enlightening as mine was 😊.

With Tool, lyrics are important. You'll have a hard time finding lyric videos though.
The best way is to have a tab open and read them while the song is playing.
This is odd for me to say 👆 since I don't pay attention to lyrics with other bands, but I truly feel this way with Tool.

MAYNARD was in the Military. It's rumored that it's based on the Cadet Honor Code.

The best way to experience TOOL is over time. There is simply too much to digest at once, or twice, or even 10 times. Have fun! 🖤🤘🏽

Thanks for the video and welcome to the rabbit hole. Suggestions: 1. Enjoy nodding to a regular beat while you can. It only gets impossible later on as the band matures. Just 'feel' the music instead of listening for a set pace. 2. Read the lyrics if you want. Maynard's lyrical intonations can be difficult to pick up on and personally, I think knowing what (and how) things are being said adds to the experience. 3. With the exception of the song Pushit and Sober, don't review live versions. For those songs, do both if you can. 4. Use the official Tool page as your source for reviews. There are a lot of 'fanmade' videos for their songs which range from somewhat okay to horrible. So just steer clear of them altogether. 5. Headphones. Always. 6. Understand going in that your opinions about all other music you hear moving forward may change. Peace!

Early Tool is raw and more standard heavy rock. They do mix in some progressive sounds in this album though. This is why doing the full discography in order is good to hear their evolution.

Have lyrics close by because the bands philosophy is that they are all equal. Maynard is just another instrument.

Yeah mainly art-rock like Pink Floyd, hard rock, influenced by but not fully progressive rock, metal, grunge, world music, ambient, etc. They have a few songs that sit among numerous genres

Do yourself a favor and read the lyrics along with the songs. . .
Each album evolves further into maturity, emotion, spirituality, and intellect as TOOL takes the listener on a wild rollercoaster ride of thought and emotion. Reading the lyrics is imperative as Maynard's artistic approach is to be "a-part" of the band, rather than "Apart-from" the band like so many other "front men" in mainstream music. His voice is an instrument, and he uses his voice in powerful, often beautiful, and very moving ways, whether he is screaming in your face or whispering in the background. Each lyric is tied to the emotion of the music that is brilliantly orchestrated and designed to send a message.
Interestingly enough the "message" of each song is written in such a way by Maynard so that each listener often hears a different message than the person sitting next to them. The thing that makes TOOL so amazing is that each listener is tempted to dive deep into their own thoughts and emotions as they immerse themselves in the sound of TOOLs music, allowing for each individual to "feel" the music differently. Same song, different impact. And as a fan of the band since the early 90's, that same idea continues, as songs like "Intolerance" STILL impact me in new and powerful ways nearly 30 years after hearing it for the first time! As I change through time, so too does the impact of TOOL's music on me!
And as each listener moves from Undertow all the way through to Fear Inoculum, they are challenged to dig deep into themselves and answer many of life's most pressing questions. TOOL is not a "band", TOOL is a "tool" that is used to look at life from within, for, after all, that is where all real and practical change takes place in our lives.
So, give yourself permission to "Feel" the music and experience the emotions they bring up in you as you take note of what Maynard is saying in his lyrics. And then prepare to be amazed as each new album breaks new barriers in sound, meaning, and connection with the listener. ENJOY!

The Tool journey from the beginning is 👍. The earlier album is a little more hard. They have definitely spiraled out and become a generational band. They have only made one member change and that was the bassist. Paul was the bassist for this album and then they bring in Justin.
The only things I recommend for listening to Tool are....good headphones, do NOT watch the videos the 1st time, lyrics are always a good idea and have an open mind.
Lyrics are a good idea cause Maynard tends to use his voice like it is an instrument not a main focal point.
The best live video from Undertow is Sober or at least it is the most popular.
Enjoy the journey. Tool fans will be with you.

Tool is prog, alternative metal…..so yeah…it’s HARD. You should have lyrics in front of you, or having read them before you listen. They are deep. That way you can concentrate of the complex rhythms, instrumentation and great vocals. Tool is both an intellectual trip and a total gut punch.

@@SalvoG better stay on official videos and pull lyrics on other screen.
Audio quality on lyric videos aren't always premium.
Concerning lyrics, yeah. Tool and pink Floyd are the exception on very high value to the music.

personally feel that understanding everything about art is kind of overrated, my favourite way to listen to tool is to listen and get lost in the what if’s and could be’s. it’s like walking through a jungle with no clear set path. you make your own way through and come out with a fresh unique perspective

Read the lyrics before or after, just never during…the musical presentation should be left alone if possible.
