Paul D’Amour was the bass player on Opiate and the Undertow album. He also wrote parts for the Aenima album. I’m glad Justin joined the group because he was the last piece of the puzzle for Tool to become what they have become. But I absolutely love Paul on the early stuff.
i felt the same way when i first heard them. all the elements that i value in music were present and correct and have remained so for twenty five years. amazing.
You can subdivide any time signature into groups of two and three beats 4/4 - two groups of 2 5/4 - one group of 3, one group of 2 6/8 - two groups of 3 or three groups of 2 7/8 - two groups of 2, one group of 3 etc
Love your reactions man. So energetic and emotional. Please do reaction (or just listen - you won't regret I promise) track "Freder" from Polish prog metal band Indukti. They have a strong Tool vibes in their music but with their own unique sound. Looks like nobody knows about this band unfortunatelly.
Maynard went to West Point and their code "We will not lie, cheat, or steal, or tolerate anyone who does." obviously made an impact on him.

I’m down with him changing his flow.
My man. Seems everyone else is all about the 50 year old version of the band.
Pull the lyrics, only look when you need. I listened for years without lyrics, just figuring it out.
