  • A few months ago I made the announcement that I will be launching and releasing a sewing pattern. In today's video I want to show you it's looking and the changes I made to the pattern.
    🌸 You can subscribe here: bit.ly/3e9EP9g
    And you can follow me on Instagram here / alexandra__burnett
    I also, think I have a cute name for it, so consider this the name reveal for my sewing pattern.
    I also would love for you to share your preferences when it comes to bias binding.
    Would you prefer a narrower bias binding, or a roomier one to make sewing it easier? ( but that means a bulkier finish)
    Please let me know your thoughts in the comments, it would mean so much to me to hear from the sewing community on how you want the dress to be.
    About me and this channel:
    On a journey to change my life and live up to my potential. I am documenting it, so come along and let's pursue the best there is for us out there.
    Topics I will cover: self-care, mental health, mom life, crafty life, fashion, womanhood, cooking, travelling.
    About me: I’m Alexandra and I live in Oxfordshire together with my husband and our adorable daughter. My hope is that you’ll find a lot of positivity on this channel.
    P.S this channel started out as a sewing channel, but 3 years of posting only sewing content has left me wanting more. So whilst I want to respect my beginnings, it's time for me to go after what I feel is in my heart, and that's to document my life and share about my experiences as I am on this journey of squeezing all of the good juice that this life has to offer.

    Hi Alexandra 🤗 Love the name of the dress so unique!! About the binding, I will be really honest, i would suggest to put the binding like turning to the inside, usually binding seeing on the outside give a sporty look and with this dress you want something fancy. And because it's a dress for other people sew is better simplify. It's easy get frustrated with satin speacilly making bindings. And a bad binding aplication could ruin the dress .... Other optiion could be put an inside layer on the upper part this way no binding and it's good for people who dont want to wear it with a bra. I hope you don't see my comment in a mean way. I really want the best for you and for your pattern ❤

      Absolutely not a mean comment! V helpful, this is why I invited a conversation I need people’s input and this is great!!! 💕💕💕 with this dress I do want something fancy so will continue to work on it, till I find something that works.

    Great pattern, I like the bias binding as is, but then I like to do bias binding. I love the name The Sandy Belle Slip Dress. ! I do the bias binding in reverse soo, right side binding to wrong side fabric, first line of stitching then fold over and stitch from the front, very easy to get a nice finish and neat stitches. Will be exciting to get to pattern testing stage… what an achievement. !

      Debra you are one of the rare ones who likes bias binding and I respect you for it! I tried that method but it looked a little too bulky!

  • @emilysmith2784
    @emilysmith2784 10 месяцев назад +1

    I think the bias binding does look a little chunky but I’ve never been a fan of bias binding done like that 😂. I prefer to have the whole thing tucked inside and a bind whip stitch done or to have a facing. I am just not a fan of top stitching as I think it makes things look homemade, but I get that you are trying to make this a beginner friendly pattern. Catharine Sews is a legend for all sewing skills and has some amazing bias binding tips. You could check her out. She did one project where the binding just peaks out and looks a little like piping, you might like that look.

    I have also made a bias tank top pattern to fit myself. When I sew it I usually use a narrow hidden bias tape wrapped around back. For your elegant dress i suggest trying a version where you completely line your dress with a very thin fabric. I would call it a dress not a slip. I had a chiffon dress made for me this way. Completely lined. It felt like butter to wear. There are almost no bias cut patterns on the Internet for sale or free, most patterns are rudimentary and generic boxes...it will be great when you have yours available.

    I love the way the dress is looking and I love how versatile you're making it with different length versions and even top versions that is a win. I don't think think the bias binding looks chunky at all I quite like that width personally. If you are wanting to look at bias binding videos for any inspo moving forward Rosery Apparel did a video on the recently I believe. I also love the reason for chosing the name I too pull for inspiration for names (in my writing) from things I loved from my childhood like flowers names, favourite places I guess whatever names had sentimental value to me. I hope you and family have a good week ahead and that your work with this dress goes well because honestly it's lovely.

    I think the width of the binding on its own isn't bulky but with slippery fabrics you can accidentally sew it "rolled" and not flat which might be why it looks like it's popping out more than it should ? I don't know if that makes sense. Maybe using some starch on those pieces to help it lay more flat while you sew and stuff could help

    • @AlexandraBurnett
      @AlexandraBurnett  10 месяцев назад +1

      Ah this is so helpful! I have wanted to punch something every single time I tried doing bias binding on slippery fabric! It’s so annoying! Do you just put corn starch on it! Or do you do a mixture with water and spray it? Please let me know. Would love to find out more. Thank you! X

      @@AlexandraBurnettHi Alexandra :) last time I sewed with rayon I starched it with a generic starching spray I found in the grocery store made for ironing/pressing. You basically have to spray the fabric from a distance and then iron it dry (carefully making sure the grain isn’t skewed while you do so) (yes it’s exhausting I hate slippery fabrics hahaha). I’m by no mean any expert on it though but since we use these sprays on strechy fabrics edges to avoid them « rolling up » I assume it could work with bias binding as well?

    Loving the look of you slip dress and the name choice suits it (and you) perfectly! With bias binding issue I personally like the thinner width, for me to complements the style and dress style better. Minerva have a good tutorial on sewing bias binding. And it done by my favourite presenter on that channel, very clear and easy to follow. Another random thought I had was did you consider facings I. The development of the pattern? I read that a lot of people don’t like doing them (which puzzles me), but could this be a ‘better’ fit for the type of fabric?? But what do I know? 🤣

    • @AlexandraBurnett
      @AlexandraBurnett  10 месяцев назад

      Thank you so much!! I did think of facing but didn’t like the thought of it. With such thin slippery fabric i feel it’s so easy to see the facing - either texturally or it peeking through the thinner fabric. Didn’t want that - especially as I had an experience of sewing a slip dress with facing that always showed and I was always gifted / self conscious of it.
      So I feel like the bias binding, even though it’s so much more annoying to sew once you’re done with it, then you don’t have to worry about it. Xxx

    @FutureFendiFsnista 10 месяцев назад +1

    Not finished the video yet but, would it be possible to make the bias binding 1.25 inches? It's not as small as the 1" and would give a bit more room without looking bulky. Or maybe even have multiple width options for those who want a wider binding? Another thing to note is that some people use an machine attachment for the 1" binding because its too narrow to attach on its own. I have been sewing for years and still struggle with the 1/4 " fold that the 1" binding creates. Third, Kiana Bonollo has some great tutorials for different sewing techniques. She is a fashion designer and very good at the technical stuff.
    Edit: the bias binding is perfecr as is. It's not bulky at all!!! You did such an amazing job on it! Cant wait for the patterns to launch!!!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
