So true! Nothing worse than a drummer who needs their tech to explain what they’re using… :) Maybe they never got the gear bug like so many of us have. Anyway great drummer/band that I’ve followed for many years! Wonderful rig rundown!

Genius idea with the Cowbell clamps. I've been looking to turn a square power tom into a Hi hat side floor without drilling it. Game changer. Top tip. I'm off to Amazon now. Cheers.

Thanks for doing the video. Like alot of your choices. I'm hearing nothing but good stuff from British Drum Company regarding their drums. And currently. Birch drums and Zildjian A cymbals work well for metal. So good choices from my end. Only thing missing, and most drummers do it, they don't talk about their hardware and rack system, cymbal arms/stands etc. Nice kit their Mr. Octopuss :)

Hi! Really cool setup and hacks. Thanks for sharing! I am hobby metal drummer and - oh dear, when I bought the Toontrack EZX I honestly did not know, that you were performing with Devin. The Toontrack guys put your interview at the very bottom of the product page. Awwww, I love these EZX and SDX! I used them for VST drumming, with rather cheap pads but ... this sounds so good. I mean, you made it. You have a perfect mix of your nice drums, with good mics. Me, I spent a lot of time in dark basements with huge spiders and humidity and strange smells and bunch of crazy guys to make some zombie metal AND I never got the sound of perfectly mixed drums. Ha! Then my wife came up with the idea, to buy an ekit for the kids. And as a metal drummer, you know, know way, I said. But you know: Happy wife - happy life! And I grabbed a cheap Millenium MPS-850 AND EZDrummer2 and ... that was is - with: "For the kids!" Amazing, these sample libraries! And I also got the cheap version of your stool. I just got an tactile transducer or ass shaker, butt kicker - you know - an old subwoofer amp and baaam! Together with your samples, the IEMs and the butt kicker ... Amazing experience. AND I switch between DeathMetal and UKPop, Jazz kits with 2 clicks. :-)
@DarbyTodd Yeah, for sure! I primarily use Superior Drummer 3, but because of the library I grabbed EZD3. These Toontrack stuff is not good for my wallet. Ha. I got the Hugh Padgham library besides others and as a kid of the 80s... woooow. Amazing.
It works so well. It took me a while to find a way to make it work without having the upright bar in-between the bass drums. I never liked the look of that. It’s really stable. It’s 2 of the 8 inch extension bars either side and the little cymbal extensions holding it to the main rack.
Seen a lot of drummers using double bass pedal while bringing a second kick for show. Would have been curious how the set sounds dry without mikes. Looks great.
Yep. I should have run a competition as to how many times I said that. I’m def gonna have to learn some more descriptive words regarding how much I love stuff!!
@DarbyTodd Hey Darby it's all in good fun brother!!! You are a monster player btw.. I very much appreciate ya..🤟😎👌..And not to worry I can't stop saying the word excellent..🤣🤟
The UK has really stepped up to the plate in the world of producing drums and drum products, recently. Code drumheads and British Drum Co. are amazing quality brands and I believe stand up to any American, Japanese, or German drum companies. Those two brands are absolutely top notch.
BDC is only what it is because the main man keith keo was left jobless after premiers monumental management fuck ups send them bust. He has recently left BDC though.
I saw you guys on this tour and it was incredible! I hope you come back around, and hopefully headline! What an amazing setup. The British drums are beautiful! I love Audix mics for drums as well, and the system that vibrates the throne, what a great idea. Question: when you said, "I couldn't play some of these songs without this in my arsenal", were you being cheeky?😂😂 Great video, thanks for showing this gorgeous kit!
How much of a freaking rock star you were live was my biggest takeaway from the show in Hebron, KY. It was my much anticipated first time seeing Devin after watching many many live concerts on RUclips so no surprises there, but man you killed it! Add to the fact that you laid down the drums on my top two albums of 2022, Tiktaalika and Lightwork and is Darby Todd my favorite drummer at the moment?
@@DarbyTodd Correct, and I'd say closer to 10 than 15%, in most places I almost can't hear the difference when I mute the trigger. And I'm actually using it more for the attack/snap than for the tail, it kinda takes over in the rare instances of a slightly weaker hit, to make sure they all pierce through the wall of guitars and orchestral tracks.
@@DarbyTodd I just watched your drum cam footage of ‘By Your Command’ - I love that song , you played it immaculately man. Not an easy task! Brilliant to watch!
I looked into getting the Porter & Davies since I moved to in-ears. Playing bigger stages, ie Hellfest, Brutal Assault and others I noticed a lack of kick, which really is annoying. THEN, I saw the price and went into ontological shock.😮
Ah Darby, I think that you may have skipped over an important aspect of your rig. The cymbal that you cracked and, was driiled out by you tech. do you prefer the sound before, or after?
When the cymbal started to crack the cymbal completely loses its tone. Sounds more like a dull thud. Cutting it out def made it sound like a resonant cymbal. I’m sure it doesn’t sound quite as good as when it’s in working order but it’s crazy how much better it sounds when the crack is gone. I went to Zildjian and swapped the broken one for a 19 A thin crash. I’ve never tried the thins before. I’ve always been a medium thin person. The thins really sound good.
Hey man. Sorry for the late reply. It’s a soundcraft mixer. I’m not too fussy on what I use. And it does change in fly gigs. I need enough channels to have stereo band, stereo backing tracks, stereo drums, click and then kick in a separate mono channel.
Hey Darby I have a question. If you only use one bass drum why not just have one if your using a double pedal? Is it a looks thing? I prefer a double bass kit to a single bass kit I don’t like the way the slave pedal feels.
We used a single kick on the previous tour but decided that having a larger looking kit would be the way to go. There was a small issue of channels on the desk. If we used two kicks I’d only be able to have kick in mics on both rather than kick in and out mics. I’ve spent my whole life using a double pedal. I’m comfortable with it and it allowed me to have the slave exactly where I wanted it rather than compromise. So yeah it’s purely for the more rock n roll look!
@@DarbyTodd thanks Darby. either way it looks badass! I have another question what is the no 1 devin song with the most double bass from his solo band?
You probably wanna check his previous band Strapping Young Lad. There’s a couple of tunes on the Nightwork album that have crazy kicks. There’s a song called Juular which is pretty crazy too. Don’t know what album it’s on though.
its an Alex van halen show idea, the feel of 2 beaters bouncing off one head rather than two separate head is different especially if you bounce the beater head. You sound Pretty dumb.
KellyShu are great products, but their kick in clamp isn't adapted for the microphone we use... and I'd still keep the kick out microphone... well, out! Also tried kickport several times and never had good results, and I would probably blame it on the way having a plastic tunnel around a microphone isn't the greatest idea if it's not the kind of result you're going for.
I like the drums and all the extra gear to go with it. But you lost me when you started talking about backing tracks. I feel a band should play everything live, that's why it's called live music.
Timothy, have you listened to Devin's music? There is tons of background ambience, synths, samples etc. that go on in the backing tracks that are mentioned. All the people who are playing instruments up on stage play their own stuff 100%, this is nothing like Mötley 😊
Hey. I completely get what you are saying. As someone else has just commented. The backing tracks aren’t really playing musical parts. We play the majority of everything you hear on stage. There’s just a ton of noises and FX etc on the playback. Also some orchestral parts. Unfortunately in this climate to make everything 100% percent live we would need several keys players, an orchestra, and a choir!! It’s not cost effective! The backing stuff isn’t parts that we could play. I agree that when bands use tracks to play things they could be playing live is pretty bad. This isn’t that. Hope this explains a bit. Thanks.
I appreciate when a great drummer is a gear head too and can explain in detail like this what he's using and why. Thank you. And well done!
Thanks! I think we are all secretly gear heads!
