My girlfriend will not be happy, but I have to cancel our plans. Need to watch this.
It's okay, we still love you. (In all seriousness, really appreciate your site!)
There are enough women in the world but just one 'out of spec' good to see you know your priorities.
@@buddy1155 she ended up seeing a movie alone in the living room and now she went to bed :-) I have a Bjørn Nyland 1000km challenge to watch now :-) Just finished the first part of this race.
This is the way
Ha ha ha! Seeing this comment makes me curious about how many women like me also enjoy these races. Seems like it's mostly men here. I so look forward to this.
Do I have to say it. More Lacey please. She asks good questions.

Kyle and Drew speeding through the tunnel. 68mph in a 50 :-D
You don’t have the Volvo esuv in USA ?
No, we don’t have an electric, but we have a hybrid Volvo
About Kia, eGMP in generell: Remaining miles calculation based on the average consumption from the last 750 km (466 mi). The selected drive mode and temperature are considered, but in a very static way (ratio correction factor).
Be careful about this values, drive most of the time in the city and than go on highway roadtrip, this estimation is useless.
Use the build in navigation, it calculates with how many SoC (in percent) you arrive your goals. It used the allowed speed limits, altitude profile, traffic, outdoor/indoor temperature and wind. It's very accurad, but the Kia team in this race don't use it :-/
How us it: with active route touch on the "remaining miles / time arrival" text (map view, bottom center). The estimation are updated every two minutes.
Hmm. What's that bolted to the steering wheel of the Tesla? Spinner knob? Or related to self driving.....
Kyle, as an older person, 69 years old, I assure you I can figure it out. However not going to buy a EQS.

2 hours 23 mins 😂 this is the full out of spec experience
And its just part 1 … true out of spec style!
They’ve posted a 4 hour video for the race across America I think
But I know that they posted one
In spec for Out of Spec
Pro tip 1.25x
Putting the names of the drivers and the car on the screen during each change is VERY helpful for keeping everything straight. Thank you for adding that on.
Never stop making road trip videos!
To all the casual viewers watching who are thinking, "wow, you have to calculate and track all this stuff on an EV road trip? Hard pass!" This video is a race, not normal road-tripping. You don't need to know/do any of this nerdy stuff.
You don't need to know all of it, but you need to know some of it. Because of the wide range of infrastructure, you really do need to know the output of the stations along your way.
This is one of the most important comments for context.
This is the gamefication version of EV road tripping by racing.
🎯
Oh, a 2-hour RUclips video? Perfect! I was just looking for a new way to procrastinate my entire day away.
You found it! YAY
That’s not what procrastinate means
Out of spec motoring posted! Everyone get ready!
The lady sitting at 99% in the Ioniq 5 is the star of this video...
I'm pretty sure the Ioniq 5 owner was just doing their full free 30-min session. I've seen that behavior a lot: "If it's free, I'm going to do the whole thing!" For E-GMP, I think Hyundai and EA would have seen more benefit from doing free 20-minute sessions. Heck, even free 15-minute sessions would get most drivers to 80%.
Not at 150s. I have an IONIQ 6 ... really low on range I've seen 25 mins to 80.
@@AlexBerman1 The IONIQ 6 might be different. From my experience with the KIA EV6 and what I've seen reported for the IONIQ 5, they will both go from 10% to 80% in under 20 minutes on a 150 kW charger. It's as little as 15 minutes on a 350 kW charger. So assuming most drivers plug in between 10% and 30%, a 15-minute session would get them most of the way to 80%, even on a 150 kW unit.
They should have just said free until you reach 80% to avoid people staying there forever during the slowest part of the battery range. Then that lady who got there with 60% would have been out of there in 5 minutes.
@@GraysonCarr Yes. I think it's mostly about marketing. "Free 30 minute session" is something easy for everyone to understand. The disconnect is for people who are new to EVs, and they think they need to use all 30 minutes. It's like showing the time to 80%. New EV folk think that means they *should* charge to 80% every time, even if that's not the best thing for their trip.
Highlight love the 2.5 trip but am happy to see Lacey . I knew that voice in the preview video. It would have been cool to get Francie and lacey

Train: I'm about to change your world.
Love these! To make it more fair, i’d suggest everyone starting from the same spot right off the highway. In town driving is so subjective and based on luck for hitting lights, traffic, trains and has nothing to do with the performance of the SUVs. ♥️
They should start at that charging station they use for the range test. But this one is probably easier to full charge.
2 hours 23 Mins Out of Spec motoring let go
Which is the most comfortable cruiser? The model x seems really noisy. Ev9 seems almost as quiet as the eqs.
I try to watch these videos to learn about the pluses and minuses of owning an EV but the key take away is always that Kyle and some of his cohort are rude and self-entitled. “That Kia guy didn’t want to move, dude, we’re taking that cable…”, “thank god that guy wasn’t one click more of a douche”.
love the tesla quack in the background 8:29 hahah
I'm just starting to watch this, but I already feel like I'm missing out of Spec Dave!!! Come on, Dad, what is more important than a cross-country race?

Damn Out of Spec hire James Cameron to direct this sucker?
haha Lacey - I'm doing them a service keeping them under the 10 mile per hour over limit. She's great on camera too, very articulate. Should have her on the channels more in the future.
What is her channel or Insta?
Oh not fair. Where is part 2. Just when I thought part 1 would end in Vegas. You guys are such a tease
Probably takes a long time to edit.
Will there be a food tour on Jordan’s team 😂
58:25. I can’t disagree more. I use FSD daily and can’t remember the last time the car had “phantom braking”. It was an issue it the past but no longer. Maybe on non FSD vehicles? Phantom braking seems like such old news. My experience.
Y'all should have an ICE car tag along just so we could have a baseline time to see how much it beats EV time
This would be really interesting.
The Non stop time is 809 miles, in 12h 04mins. Add maybe a 10 mins stop for a decent idea.
You would need to handicap the ICE vehicle with at least 4 months worth of gas stops assuming a generous 3 road trips a year in your EV
I just did a 6000-mile cross-country road trip in my PHEV, spanning 3 weeks. I figured that if I had done it in a BEV, I’d have needed at least 2-3 more days, with all the added expenses (hotels, food) that goes with that
@panameradan6860 not if your charging stops are planned right. An EV can go for a many hours at highway speeds before they need to stop to charge. In that time you'll need to stop to use a restroom, get food and drinks, and just walk around anyway. That's stops that you would have made anyway.
For the Rivian, I just usually manually add speed with the accelerator through the curve, then just get off the accelerator once the curve symbol disappears. Works well once you get into the rhythm of it.
I love these road trip videos. It's like movie time for me. I wonder how long it takes for them to edit and post these?
Here lies KC. A legend. But his death could have been avoided, if he only wore t-shirts in the summer.
You guys are insane. And I love it. Never change!
Looks like you guys are really gonna crank up the drama in part 2 😂
Love it. The harder they race, the slower they go!
EV Food Tour go in Dave’s Memory
Thanks for putting the names of cars and teams on the screen.
Such an addictive video.
You should do one with a bolt, leaf, Kona, and maybe the e-golf to show how far we’ve come with charging speeds and roadtripping.
That'll drive them insane but I agree!
so painful but yes
I think what might have happened back at the EA in Grand Junction was the 350 kW Charger forgetting to fire up the second cabinet, as it kinda looked like the Mercedes was pegged at 350 Amps.
so I watch to the end .............Jordan and Andreas chowing down as they were on the F150 truck race......so funny.........go Ryan & Lacy!
You could have easily reduced at least 20 mins, if not for those pesky advertisements.
Can you guys get a microfiber. The skin oils are all over the screens
The model X right there in the intro locking and doing the quack was the reason. I knew this video was going to be great.
I thought Brandon would be driving the model x in the race!
143kw and your complaining? lol try venturing off strip in. Vegas to Henderson. I have 3 6.6kw or one 48kw chargers. And that’s if the one 48kw charger isn’t broke which half the time it is.

I'm an hour in. Production is good. Just wipe down the screen it was hard to read on the KIA I think it was but all of them had issues with flaring the dust.I like the Mercedes blood clot mode and the SUV in general.❤
Wait so this is just part one of the trip there? I haven't felt like this since watching the first Hobbit movie!
Hahaha so true. These have no business being as good as they are
It’s about the same running time as well😂
Surprisingly watchable
1 of those is a SUV and the rest are large crossovers.
First time watching this channel.
I confirm that you shouldn't take theoretical range given by automakers seriously. We should be able to but yeah... Just too many variables, software quirks etc. Real life data given by owners is the way to go. Do your homework.
Depending on your driving style & and your commute or road trips needs, the ideal vehicle for you could surprise you.
Also, the rate of progress going on in the EV world is bonkers. What you know can be obsolete 6 months later. 🤯
Thanks for the upload.
Amazing race. I'm french,. You should see the progress of the network on the motorways in France, for the two last years, it's fun. When I see only 4 charging points in Grand Junction, I tell myself that Europe is ahead. Thanks for this great races (and Canonballs). I like so much. It remember me my two road trips in west america. Such beautiful sceneries. Thanks Kyle and friends.
Would be interesting to see a Race to Vegas with 3 or 4 cars of the same model, such as the Model 3. Could do a new 2024 highland, a 2021 (previous refresh) and the original 2018. Or a series with a wide variety of mileage to see how much of an impact degradation has.
Love the KIA
2:06:09 As an owner of a Ioniq, I really wish I could understand why they are still charging at 96%. It tapers off so bad at 90% it's faster to hit the next charger. Also, some of the 150kw EA chargers will put out up to 170ish.
1:39:30 Do not "blame" generally old" people, they can not handle this or that . I am 57 and i like to find out everything, if i am interested in. But if not- i like it easy. I think Mercedes delivers both, good automatic systems for roadplaning and Nerd level options to everyone who like to do it.
To make this clear. I am not feeling insulted. Do not want discuss such thinks here and love youre videos.😎
In my experience the EV9 is a better road tripper than our Model Y. It just rips at the charger and is very efficient given its size.
I just did a 3500ish mile roadtrip from Colorado to the Georgia coast and back. I can confirm that ev9 rips the charging stops. 213kw maximum at nearly every stop and holds over 200 to 65%, 180ish from 65 to 75ish and then drops to 130 from 75-80%. That’s better than anything else I have driven so far
Just bought an EV9 for a road trip from Portland to Disneyland ❤️
would really like this done with Rivians LFP pack!
I've driven that several times (averaging about 1.5 times per year, 3 one-ways per year). With ICE/hybrid, it takes about 10 hours 45 miutes, which includes a 10 minute refuel for our sedans, and NO refuel, just a ranch exit pee break with a Mercedes GLX 350D. I am interested to see the ET of your race...
Stopping once for 10 minutes in a 10 hour drives sounds miserable. I’d want to stop for two meals and at least two bathroom breaks lol
With fast charging EVs like these if you want to arrive sooner you dial the speed up. Honestly same thing for a gas car. I’ve done many days with EVs >1000 miles. Several times I’ve done 1200 miles in a day. What you’re seeing in this “race” is really more a survey of the charging infrastructure of Colorado, Utah and Nevada.
@@chags3512 We're not driving for fun. We're driving to get to our sites & time is money. We drive at night, so little traffic, no sites to see, & the techs sleep. We can pee when refueling and snack on the road. BEVs suck at this kind of driving.
@@michaelterrazas1325 sounds miserable lol. If it’s work related I guess that makes sense but I’m definitely glad I don’t do that for work.
@@chags3512 You have no idea of the compensation, the camarderie, the perqs and all else that we enjoy. It's sad to see someone so quick to judge another's career on so little information. Enjoy your 9 to 5.
"I'm feeling lucky" ... Train horn sounds
Why not make it more realistic and add some additional weight, such as luggage and ballast (to simulate the weight of one or two children)? Most family road trips involve more than two people in a large SUV. I'm interested in seeing what effect weight has on the range of these vehicles. Keep the content coming.
Weight is very minimal when it comes to efficiency
any issues charging the EV 9 at electrify america or other non tesla charging stations? Interested in Kia EV9 and trading in my tesla model y (need larger SUV), but 800V architecture doesn't work well at Tesla superchargers until they upgrade to V4 at more locations. I've just heard of nightmares with electrify america or other non tesla charging stations being down or not working well
Team Dom!
Love the channel! However...
That thing about the Mercedes "moving you around so you don't get blood clots" sound like a load of hooey.
You prevent blood clots by walking which causes the veins in your legs to contract and circulate blood more effectively. I don't think the mercedes feature is accomplishing that function.
Drove across Nevada to SLC to Moab that Sunday/Monday and all EA chargers derated on our R1T. Too dang hot
The commuter example: 150 miles per day. Assume gas car gets 25 mpg. Cost in fuel to go 150 miles = 3 dollars/gal x 150 miles/25 mpg = 18 dollars per day. Cost for home charging at 12c per kWhr and the Tesla Model 3 standard range battery size is 50 kWhr. To fully charge the baterry at home would be 12 cents/kWhr x 50 KWhr = 7 dollars to go 200 miles. The cost per day for the 150 mile commute would be 7 dollars x (150 m/200 m) = 5 dollars and 25 cent per day. You would save 12.75 a day which would be 63.75 dollars for a 5 day work week. You would save 3,315 dollars a year.
My ABSOLUTE FAVORITE Out of Spec videos!
1:10:00 Plus Rivian first generation has no heat pump.
Should the model Y AWD 7 seater meet this spec?
You can't make a video on Model X without mentioning the FOV and huge windshield screen stretching to the sealing. Almost makes it a first choice only based off that.

Team Rivian should have been supplied with a Supercharger to CCS adapter. It would have significantly improved their charging options and would better simulate the new and improved Rivian road trip experience.
Although I had no idea that RAN chargers shared the 300kW between 3 stalls, which thankfully I have not experienced yet. Luckily I just got my Supercharger adapter so I’m stoked that I can charge my R1S at many more fast chargers🥳 Love my Rivian!
Just passed about 1 hour 32 mins Jordan says there's an open to Rivian supercharger they could use but didn't make sense to use. So sounds like they had the adapter.
So in korea, E-pit which is a hyundai version of tesla's supercharger supports 800V charge but also limited to 80%. I think all of 350Kw charger in states should be limited to 80% as a default for preventing that kind of IONIQ lady :(
Rivian sites share power. How did they not know that? If it's full, they would be getting below 100kW.
watched the full 2:23:20 hr video, Felt like I was part of the trip! Beautiful Video and very interesting! gonna watch the 2nd part right after tthis! Felt like documentary lol Got used to all the characters in this video hahaha
The editing on this video completely blows. Too much in car footage very little charging (which is what most of us here want to know). We know it can drive but can it charge and when and how fast
I enjoy these, but really should start right next to the highway onramp, skip all the city street drama.
Has anyone watched the full video?
Ues
If Mercedes hired a designer those screens would be amazing. As it stands it's a very well engineered display running a UI from 2009.
I’ve never used the in car navigation (post smart phones with Google Maps). Period. In any car I’ve ever owned. I personally don’t know a single person who has ever used the in car navigation. My dad has an f150 lightning and my brother has a Model Y. They each still don’t use the in car navigation. In the Model Y, the traffic is so unreliable that my brother just has his phone and Waze maps running. He doesn’t bother to pre-heat or anything, in fact, I’m not even sure he knows about it haha.
So when I hear that cars are dropping Apple CarPlay and android auto, I get upset. I really don’t want to lose those. I wish they would all fast track their EV route planning. I mean, gas cars don’t tell you where to stop, but right now, it’s different for EVs since DC chargers aren’t positioned every 10 miles. So I get needing to preplan EV charging stops.
Have they ever included ICE vehicles in these. Would love to see a comparison with say a Camry hybrid to see how much quicker it gets there.
I hate when people use a charging station way above what their car can take. Its literally the same for them regardless and yet they block others who can charge and be gone in that time.
These Road trip/ EV races will be a much different story when all of these are able to charge on Teslas charging systems. Thats where most time is lost, trying to get those other charging systems to initiate or even be in proper working order.
Electrify America still looks like a nightmare.
yeah either not working or limited or something
@@danielzhang1916 Even if it's 100% working, only having 2 350 kW chargers and 4 total chargers per station is anxiety inducing. I like how Tesla Superchargers always have 8-12 chargers, sometimes more. I have a Tesla and a CCS adapter, but I rarely use EA stations because seeing "1 available" in the app is just too scary / risky / stress inducing.
No Doubt halfway through and Lacey is Just A Girl #95, def nice to have some variety in this Tragic Kingdom I wonder if they will let her drive 😂 ❤
Omg. Here we gooooooopo. 😊
So many ads. Almost unwatchable now. YT are killing their own platform
I still will never not see a Prius when i look at that model of Tesla.
For the MB, is the "ECO Charging" is what is limiting their charge speed ... or is that routing based ?
I think bribing people to leave the charger is not right. It doesn’t reflect the performance people will experience. The advantage Tesla has will be eliminated by giving people money to move.
It’s always Kyle doing it
Get someone an açaí, stat!
Love these "races", but in part because Kyle makes for a good villain. The entitlement to get the 350 when it's in use is what's douche, honestly.
Dude: just include an ICE and made it really interesting!
I agree but that wouldn't fit the narrative that they are trying to push though...
The ICE would kill in a race. Fill up and go in under 5. Not worth it.
1:10:25 I'm a truck driver who has driven mostly Freightliners. You joke about sport mode but I kid you not there is a "performance" mode you can put it in as long as your company hasn't locked it out. Isn't really that much different, just holds your gears longer...
"Just holds your gears longer," are they putting automatic transmissions in semis now?
