Just did my first ever EV road trip from Chicago to Pennsylvania. Really excellent infrastructure all through I-90 turnpike. Drove my new EV6 and constantly got 200kw+ through new EA stations. Max charge was 15 minutes. Honestly really simple first ever trip.
I just got home from a trip in my new lightning ER. Los Angeles to Michigan. Was an awesome trip. Used superchargers most of the time with a few EA’s when needed. Found the price on SC usually a bit better. (I do have the membership with both Tesla and EA) one of the hotels I stayed at had free level 2 which was awesome. It was great to help break up the trip stopping every few hours to charge. gave me a chance to walk around a little and get the blood flowing or get something to eat. Over the entire trip I saved almost $200 over gas. This is compared to my ice f150 getting around 20mpg.
Love the gas station replacing pumps with chargers. For me, that’s just ideal. Access to Tesla chargers is good for any range anxiety, but if they are available, I MUCH PREFER to stop at an EVgo and a Pilot FlyingJ! These travel centers are just awesome. I hope all gas stations add chargers!
If I understand it correctly, there is a federal law that no commerce can take place at interstate rest areas. This was likely insisted upon by towns along the where the interstates were being built in the 50s because they were worried about having to compete with the much more convenient businesses right on the highway. The RECHARGE act has been kicking around congress for the last few years. It would allow for chargers to be built in rest areas. I’d be very interested in hearing a podcast about it. You guys and viewers should work together to advocate to get that bill passed.
23 USC 111. However, toll roads that do not get direct federal funding (NYS Turnpike, OH Turnpike, NJ Turnpike, etc) are exempt since they don’t get this funding, and their social media always makes sure to remind you that projects are done with 0 tax dollars. I drive my R1T dual large from Miami to Georgia/Carolina’s fairly frequently, and I fortunately don’t experience the thermal problems to the extent you do. Is it possible that it’s worse when you keep the AC at max in the cabin while charging? Does it not have enough power to keep AC at max and cool the battery at the same time? Or maybe my ~800 miles trip isn’t long enough to really get into the heat soak. I also averaged ~2.43 miles per kwh (per electrafi) on stock 22s (70-85mph), so the tires and rack seem to be having an outsized impact on range than someone might think.
We took our Blazer EV from central Minnesota to Tulsa OK and back with our 2 longhair dachshunds. They lived in the Blazer during the day for 5 days with the AC running. They loved it.
Ohhhhh the I-70 diner. We were so excited when we first heard about it while planning our coast to coast drive but when we went in December is was down to just a single stall that was de-rated to 50 kW. And the diner wasn't open that day. Amazingly the one working stall was not taken and no other EVs came by while we charged. Glad EA is taking care of that station at least.
I agree that the network is improving. Kyle, the new Ford network has been working well for me. They are available at multiple dealerships and are 120kw chargers. They are simple plug-and-tap systems (unless you have the Ford App). Some dealers are still trying to figure out how they work, but when they have them turned on, they have been a good experience.
Idk if you figure it out later in the video, but changing the filters on the map is only for the map. It doesn't affect route planning, just the visibility of chargers on the map. The route planner has separate settings for charging network preferences.
Watched all 88 minutes to see if the Out of Spec team can finally learn how to configure the route planning on a Rivian...nope! Well there's always next video! 😂🙏🏻
I live near your starting point and have family I visit often in eastern Kansas. I know this road well. You haven't even made it to Limon and you have already convinced me to wait another two years before considering an EV.
Rivian really needs to work on thermals. Cars like Porsche & Hyundai doesn't have remotely as much issue - maybe 800V is necessarily for a big battery pack like this?
The gas station in KS reminded me of Petro Canada here. Nice installs, nice locations but mostly derated BTC equipment at 50kw. Im convinced it’s done on purpose somehow
Great video as always. I am not sure why your are against the conserve mode and lower suspension. I have a large pack dual motor R1S and in FL I get 2.34 on average going 80 MPH. This gets me just over 300 miles of range on the highway. The ride is quite nice when lowered and actually makes for slightly less wind noise. I also put the aero-caps on which probably helps a bit. 1.4 miles/KWH is painful. Kyle really loves his charging stops.

It would be interesting if you included the cost per kilowatt at each station. I always wonder the difference between station types and different parts of the country.
Most of the apps for that provider show the prices for that site. In the case of Tesla, it even shows you the price for the different times of the day as they are cheaper depending on which time you charge. It's it's super easy. Better than a gas station since you can check the prices on the apps before you get there and can plan ahead.
Would definitely recommend getting a sunshade for the sunroof and front windshield when dealing with those temperatures. Our R1S’ AC would be maxing out during the summer without the shades, but with them it makes the cabin almost too cold, which is perfect for the big Newfie!
Regarding the first charging stop, this is why I care about range more than anything else (audio being a close second). With 410mi of range, I can make it to Hays, then from there Columbia, staying on the Rivian network as much as possible. (The Holy Grail is 500mi of range). My point is, if I'm recommending an EV to someone, I tell them range first, then consider other features.
You recommend range first. Why? The average american drives less than 40 miles per day. Who needs 410mi of range (and the weight involved in batteries for this kind of range) for their daily driving needs?
@@mowcowbell It's not about how far you have to go on a single drive. It's about how often you have to think and worry about charging. When at home, I charge once a month if even that. And that drastically reduces the stress of having to seek out a working charger and juicing up.
@@mojavelinux I have a 240v outlet in my garage, can charge overnight when I sleep. I haven't yet needed the full 300 mile range of my Tesla Model Y for a single days' driving.

We have done this route last year going from Denver to Alabama. We also stopped at Kingdom City. There is also a ChargePoint L2 and fast charger across the parking lot.
He did it to himself. At the beginning he mentioned he doesn't use Conserve mode to avoid uneven tire wear. Which is silly, if you're rotating your tires correctly. He also left it in standard ride height the whole time. Come on Kyle
We just drove Atlanta to Miami and stopped at Bucee’s. Thought of you guys on the way as were hesitant to take out the Mach-e. Because we are still waiting for our Tesla adapter. We got to see the nice new Mercedes chargers at Bucee’s and they looked magnificent. Got to our Hotel and they had premium parking for EVs, now we regret not doing a race to Vegas down here! Next time!
May look into some of the roof /window shades to help keep the cabin cooler while stopped. I live in Texas and always keep the roof shade in my model y.
I’m not sure I could do this trip in an EV other than a Model 3 or Y. It just takes too long to charge these trucks and the cost seems more than gasoline. I drove my Model Y from Long Island to Orlando and back this summer. With the dog with me, it was fine and reasonable priced in terms of charging costs. I got to Maryland on just the charge from my home. But this seems excessive with the stops and slowness.
I too am reconsidering a Rivian purchase after watching this road trip - what a hassle! Thank you so much for this long drive it was so informative! I'd be curious to know how much it cost to replace your windshield. I am told because of the camera wiring in the glass that they are well over $1000 to replace!
How did Walter place in his competition? My wife just started showing dogs and wanted me to ask. I love EVs and she loves dogs so we enjoyed this video together. Thank you for sharing.
It’s interesting that I road tripped my R1T with the off road shield over the summer through 115 degree weather and didn’t have many heat derate issues. Wonder if that extra plate deflects some of the heat. There were definitely times where it couldn’t get below 100 preconditioning though.
It would be nice if Kyle could answer some posts ! I wonder why the max pack is not good for road trips ? We are looking at the Rivian R1T Tri motor max pack vs a Cyberbeast and I wonder what makes the max pack in the R1T bad for road trips
I have a max pack and also did a cross country trip with a max pack rental. I think it works great. I've gotten 370mi real world range on a stretch, but I think I now understand how to squeeze out closer to 400 (driving at 72mph). I just haven't experienced these kinds of issues with charging. Maybe I've been lucky. One key might be to not run the AC when charging. I know that doesn't work when traveling with a dog, but the humans can step out and have some lunch. I will admit, Kansas does get hot, so it pushes the vehicle to its limits.
Kyle is an expert, but even he had trouble taking his Rivian on a cross-country trip. Tesla SuperCharger availability helped him, but it was still a struggle. I’d never take a Rivian long distance after watching this.
Kyle - I am not sure what brand your Level 2 adaptor is, but I had the same Rivian overheat issue with the Lectron adaptor with the Tesla L2 Wall connector. I switched to the A2Z adaptor for home charging and have had zero issues with overheating since.
We have a company that installed a bunch of those BTC chargers in Oklahoma. They are aways broke and only give 50kw. They say it is because the cable cooling is broken.
Time is money … the biggest expense is in extra time for charging vs. gassing up on very long road trips… I figured that a 3-week cross-country road trip would take me 3-4 days longer in a BEV than in a PHEV
1:13:20 man, out East we have a TON of rest stops with chargers… I did notice on my cross country drives that there were almost no Tesla stations at rest stops and coming from the east coast that seems so odd.
theres nothing wrong with his truck. tesla requested to tear down kyles motor to see how its holding up since his truck is one of the highest mile cyber trucks. so tesla is taking his motor out and replacing it with a new one so that they can tear down the old one
Some of the Flying J sites have extended the canopy to cover a new set of stalls instead of replacing pumps. I was just in Flagler on my way from OK to CO. Charger worked well, but it looks like your trip was several weeks earlier.
Just did a Arizona to Dallas trip in our R1T. The software changes I'd like to see: Battery % and elevation shown on the top of the map page. Distances between next charging stops shown on route plan. Could not have done this trip near so nicely without the Tesla chargers....
what i've just twigged to, is that preconditioning just means "cooling the battery" - is that correct? And whatever function it is doing, does the power used to do it, get calculated into economy figures?
I wonder if Tesla supercharger has a lower handle temperature rating when using adapters. Since they know people will use good adapters that have thermal sensors to cheap ones that don’t. Guess we won’t find out until other companies have the nacs built in.
Great video! I hope Alyssa feels better..I heard that wheezing in her cough at 3:50; Is the air quality rough in Colorado at the time of this filming? I had trouble with it when I lived there a few years ago. BTW, met you (Kyle) at Pikes Peak in 2022 when you first got your Rivian R1T! We talked Starlink too, so much fun. Great to meet you and see that you're just as awesome in person as you are on film!
What is up with that capped top end charging off the wall? That would really bother me if my Bolt did that. Assuming 40 amp output on your tesla wall connector, that battery really should have been at full.
Omg I thought it was just me. I’ve been having charging issues with my home charger too. It’s getting to be really annoying. It keeps stopping in the middle of the night. The other night I plugged in at 56% and when I woke up the next morning it was at 58%.
That’s a bomber. I’ve been fortunate to never have my level 2 charger stop overnight. Mine was installed by QMerit as a perk when I bought my Bolt EUV last year. Your Charger may not have been executed properly. Call them back to check it.
Curious you mentioned earlier that you drive in Standard mode on your highway drives but only in Conserve when you really need to. The 2 times I peaked at the icon they were Conserve. So what's the logic? I'd love to use mine for frequently on longer highway drives but always concerned with the front tire use. Also you seem to be the type to like having your fog lights on. Would love for them to always keep it on Auto if that's your last setting. Hate remembering to turn them on manually.
Ev supercharging maybe comparable to those early days of service gas stations . There wasnt many of them and their wasnt a freeway or interstate system . Gas milage may have been comparable to the lighting . Now you had nothing to tell you were anything was untill trip maps started showing up in the 1950s . I remeber driving from new jersey to califirnia in 1983 . Alstate insurance actuallt would give a detailed trip map wih highways highlighted on my direction . The ev superchargering is like driving 70 years ago . Even in California charging can be scarce . I am amazed that you can make it work through the center of the country . Since ev adoption is light in middle america there isnt much incentive to install charging and maintain it . Thats the challange which is the chicken and the egg . They are far superior as a daily driver with home or work driving but it doest like its worth the stress going more than 8 hours. I think 3 to 4 with one charge up. I noticed even sizable cities charging is limited and you have more competition for those limited charging stations. You get to vacation destination and you are more stressed on filling up over having fun and lost time with charging cuts into the fun . Yes it can be done but its more of a novelty to see if you can as we see in this video . Actually maybe better is to have level 2 charging in you overnight stops at hotels which could get maybe 50 percent of your charging and better for your batter health . Now it can be all hit and miss . Are they availble with competition for every working charger . I mught carry emergency back like a powerstation or a generator. The generator maybe better having a fuel readily available . At least your not calling a tow truck. Now a generator may only be appropriate for a pickup truck

97 out and this dude wearing a hoodie??
How to spot a psychopath. Seriously! How does one survive that?
Love seeing the 3 pups
Minute 46 I thought I was watching Brandon Flasch. Great charging site tour.
Great video - the drool in 4K was very graphic.😀
Kyle is an expert, but even he had trouble taking his Rivian on a cross-country trip. Tesla SuperCharger availability helped him, but it was still a struggle. I’d never take a Rivian long distance after watching this.
The flagger station is now back online with their new units installed. It looks like they are preparing to install 4 more stalls.
Love motoring videos !
Kyle - I am not sure what brand your Level 2 adaptor is, but I had the same Rivian overheat issue with the Lectron adaptor with the Tesla L2 Wall connector. I switched to the A2Z adaptor for home charging and have had zero issues with overheating since.
The service plazas on the Florida Turnpike are also in the "center" of the highway.
Maybe ceramic tint the windows? That will help with heat rejection
We have a company that installed a bunch of those BTC chargers in Oklahoma. They are aways broke and only give 50kw. They say it is because the cable cooling is broken.
Can you compare the charging cost vs how much a gas car would have cost?
Time is money … the biggest expense is in extra time for charging vs. gassing up on very long road trips… I figured that a 3-week cross-country road trip would take me 3-4 days longer in a BEV than in a PHEV
1:13:20 man, out East we have a TON of rest stops with chargers… I did notice on my cross country drives that there were almost no Tesla stations at rest stops and coming from the east coast that seems so odd.
is a cybertruck really a cybertruck if it's not in the shop for service
theres nothing wrong with his truck. tesla requested to tear down kyles motor to see how its holding up since his truck is one of the highest mile cyber trucks. so tesla is taking his motor out and replacing it with a new one so that they can tear down the old one
A great way to mantain a colder temperature is to put a sunshade in the front while charging.
The software changes I'd like to see:
Battery % and elevation shown on the top of the map page.
Distances between next charging stops shown on route plan.
Could not have done this trip near so nicely without the Tesla chargers....
Does the aerodynamics of the bed cover even matter with that beautiful overland rack on the bed?
@ 10:01 YEHEHE LOVE IT!!!
Do you think the Gen 2's with the Heat pump would be a different story on the R1T for the cabin heating and cooling?
That Walter doggy is so freaking high the whole time xD
nice to see chargers replacing the pumps
what i've just twigged to, is that preconditioning just means "cooling the battery" - is that correct? And whatever function it is doing, does the power used to do it, get calculated into economy figures?
Maybe when battery gets too hot maybe if you raise it will it make the air to get to the battery
I wonder if Tesla supercharger has a lower handle temperature rating when using adapters. Since they know people will use good adapters that have thermal sensors to cheap ones that don’t. Guess we won’t find out until other companies have the nacs built in.
I wonder if when rivian switches to native NACS if there will still be station power limits at Tesla superchargers 🤔
Thanks for showing us what married life looks like!
Walter reminds me of Buff from the Country Bear Jamboree show at Disney World.
Is the warm plug issue only affecting AC at home chargers or also L3 DC chargers?
I’m sure you have mentioned this in previous videos. What tires are you running on your Rivian?
I would love to know more about that spare tire carrier on the back of the yellow r1s.
