"THis is the best nail style"
*puts it back together*
"I freaking hate this style"
It's a love-hate kinda thing I guess ?
Look closely, the replacement clips are a different style than the ones that were removed.
The first style was a push and slip on, the second style was a push and twist clip. Which honestly I understand why he feels that way, everyone just wants to press a little bit and then it'll slip right in.
Ya the first style the nail is a tapered point and the clip pushes up ones the head is through. The second style the nail is flat and the clip has to turn when the head goes through. BMW has the best system for these. You hold the nail with an allen/hex then turn the allen when the head is through instead of trying to turn the clip n hold the nail with your finger. So much easier
@@jacksmith2315 Can't be any easier than the old spring style ones can It?

"I failed it for inspection "cause I'm a prick." Thanks SMA, 25 seconds in and I'm laughing. Keep up the good work. You wear your professionalism on your sleeve.
I laughed my ass off and my wife looked at me like I was insane. Had to regurgitate the line and she said verbatim "oh god, more car videos? I'm gonna hear about these for weeks!" Sorry honey, it's an addiction at this point. She doesn't mind it when I'm ensuring the cars are in working order though.
Is funny people will hack a brake job and pay twice for same job ,and spend more money than needed .just take it to a good mechanic and you be better off
Eric: -"These stud installers should have a bearing to overcome the high friction forces".
Thor: -"It's like you don't know me at all".
Eric over here being professional with a stud installer while the rest of us just use the lug nut and some junk (washers, etc) to do the job.
Seriously, I usually use an old lug nut and whatever I can find to go in between. Then he has that special brake clip tool.
yep
I just pop the new stud in until it bites, then finish it off when I put the wheel back on 😳😬
Lisle makes one that rides on a bearing. Cost 20 bucks and works better than any other style I've owned.

Not just a parking brake it's an emergency brake as well if you lose the hydraulic brake system
Notice a lot of the newer cars don't call it an emergency brake. Everything is going to electronic parking brakes which is dumb. I prefer mechanical backup incase battery dies etc
It's also the only nice thing about driving in the winter. But you should use it when you park, specially on a hill, to avoid that loud clunk coming from your parking prawl.
Every Tool has a Hammer Side....some will not last but most will break :D
👍🏼👍🏼
Everything is airdroppable at least once.
Every tool is a hammer if you use it wrong enough
I'm that one guy. I always use my parking brake.

I am that other guy that uses his parking brake on an automatic ;)
As my mentor Red Green says, "any tool can be the right tool" if the women don't find you handsome, let them at least find you handy.
I'm the nut that puts (and teaches others) to put it in neutral first, engage parking brake, let off brake pedal, then put it in park; you have to let the brakes hold the car, not the transmission (I'd tell them to pretend its a manual but who else drives those these days?).
I do exacly the same!
Me, too. It’s how I was taught by my dad, who was taught by his father, who was taught by the guy on the farm who fixed all the equipment
✋😎👍
Facing downhill: in reverse gear, foot on brake, set parking brake, to park
Facing uphill: in forward gear, repeat steps.
I also turn the wheel to the curb just in case...
It's a shame, if people understood how sketchily an automatic is actually holding your 6000lb truck on a hill, more people would probably use their parking brake...
I once had to rescue one of our limo drivers when he parked a 180 inch stretch Town Car on a hill without using the parking brake and it jammed the transmission in park. The only way I could get it to release the parking pawl was to push the 7700lb limo up the hill while the driver pulled on the transmission lever.
Yea, that parking pin isn't that big. I always use it on a hill, and tell everyone else to as well

My stud installer was a nut and a stack of greased washers.
I just used the lug nut wo greased washers.
@@jacksmith2315 some studs protrude slightly through the axle flange, thus requiring a spacer/washer to completely and properly seat the studs.
I've actually used the lug nut with a larger nut. Works great.
NeverSneeze is the glitter of the auto shop. Q: If three people are working in the shop and one of them unscrews the lid on the NeverSneeze jar, how many people have NeverSneeze on their hands? A: Five.

@@notajp very true 😀
Lisle does make a couple different wheel stud installer tools that have a bearing incorporated. One is tapered to use with the conical seat lug nuts, the other one's flat for use with the nuts that incorporate a washer, like a Ford or Chevy truck. Had mine for years and really like them.
I'm in Southern California and sometimes I feel like driving my car to NY just to have Eric work on it!!!
Eric, This is such a great channel, I learn something new each video, great tips. On RUclips, You and Eric the Car Guy are the best. Both great teachers and help us understand automotive repair.
All four of my family use the parking brake. I got the habit when driving postal vehicles and trained the rest of the family
In the fleet shops I've worked in, the biggest smart ass was king. All hail King Eric.

Let's see how the pin identify... 😂 That was golden. Yeah I hate that nowadays everything has to be political correct 🤦♂️
Wait...your not supposed to use a hammer on a screw driver?.? I guess the tool police would also frown on using one to scrape off the crusties, pry rusty junk apart or to use one as a car key, battery tester, starter motor relay/solenoid by-passer..."if it arcs it starts". Bottom line folks...the humble screw driver IS the OG of multi-tools.
the flathead, the phillips, and the 3'' crescent (so you can use the handle as a hammer).
why would Napa sponsor you . your giving them free advertising . try using local auto part store instead ..
Big Nasty would knock those studs into next week!!
The people calling you a prick are the same ones that would line up to sue you when their brakes failed after leaving your shop (if your were the type to just slap a sticker on it). Good on you for having integrity. Harder and harder to come by these days...
American litigation culture is insane. It's really infected a lot of the rest of the world as well. A crooked garage did you a favour by passing your POS vehicle that you might not be able to afford to repair and you turn round and sue them? They did you a favour!
True story.

As Wes would say mechanics finger paint.
I despise electronic parking brakes. Back 40 years ago I was taught that your emergency brake can be used if you lose brake power. Never needed it until I did. Blew a brake line and had to use the emergency brake to get me home. Can't do that with these electric e-brakes...Yep, I guess I'm that one other guy that uses the parking brake...glad I did, or I would have ended up in the middle of a busy intersection with a mess of an accident.
My brother did that. Lost his brakes on his way home from work, got home using the parking brake. Instead of parking in the st or on the side of the driveway that had no car and more room, he parked on the side my car was parked, parked brake cable snapped and wiped out the front end of my car. Yup...never fixed it or gave me $ to...bastard
@@jacksmith2315 I hope it was a beautiful funeral for him.
WreckDiver99 I mentioned that to an engineer who helped design one of the German electronic parking systems, His reply "Well the service brakes rarely fail that way" I remarked that doesn't help the family who died when they fail and have no emergency braking...
@@Blazer02LS comes down to money. Parking break systems aren't cheap. I integrating the parking break into the rear brake system is cheap in comparison to having the cables, levers and such. Cost and weight savings is worth a whole lot of money to car manufacturers. He isn't wrong either, conventional braking systems rarely fail, but when they do.....yea.....ugh.
@@WreckDiver99 The extra cost is probably more than you think, I know Mercedes had to jump through a lot of hoops and pay $$$$$ to get the electronic system approved because it essentially eliminates having a fully mechanical system as a back-up as required in the federal laws.

"no body use parking brake in automatics except myself and another guy" well let me introduce myself, I use it on both of my cars both autos except when it parked for storage during the winter cause it's flat and don't want them to be stuck after not moving for 5 months... but I use it at work, in parking lot even on flat surface cause you never know when a dumb people dont know how to drive and broke the park pawl XD
It's also a great anti-theft feature. Nobody would suspect anyone else is using the parking brake in an automatic and wouldn't think to/know how to release it!
edit: Hey I guess that makes three of us!
@@jaymzx0 Four. Still teaching my wife...
It is called a PARKING brake for a reason. It’s main function is to hold the vehicle while parked. It does have some secondary function as well, such as in an emergency and as a means of adjustment on some drum brakes, etc.
@@fomoco300k If I recall, it used to be called an 'E-brake' but has been called a 'parking brake' in recent decades. Then again nobody calls the regular brakes by the formal name 'service brakes', either.
@@jaymzx0 In the days of less reliable brake systems it was more common to call it an emergency brake. It’s primary function is for use every time you park the car/vehicle, but interchangeable terms are such as emergency, parking, hand brake. All of those describe it in part but none fully describe all of its intended uses. Again, primarily for safely parking the vehicle and also for emergency situations, brake show adjustment, etc.
Call it what you like, but by all means use it and maintain it!
@@fomoco300k One time i got off the highway and a rear caliper split in half... kind of scary, no body was in front at a "striking" distance but still had to turn pretty sharp to avoid the ditch, got to work since I was about 2 min from there, still got pressure but the pedal was going almost to the floor to have a normal braking. After work I came back home, almost all the fluid was drained during the time it sit at work, brake light was on since the fluid was low, still could brake "normally" if I put it to the floor but I use the parking brake to add more braking power to the rear since it's a drum in hat system. So yeah parking brake/ emergency brake the same systeme just marketing
Eric,
I have watched so many of your videos that I now subconsciously hear the BREAK CLEANER sound effect in my head every time I have to use it at work.
I have no regrets.
This is like a comedy show these days. 🤣🤣 I feel bad for some of the international viewers that don’t pick up on the subtle things due to the language barrier.
I guess it reminds me off going to the movies with my daughter when she was little and there was funny stuff the kids laughed and than there was the funny stuff all the parents laughed and kids didn’t get it.
What's worse is when you take your kid to a movie that's racier than you expected, ("Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid" for example) and your kid laughs at all the right places.
You mean like Shrek and Lord Farquaad.
That's when they realized if it's fun for the parents, they may see it again.
Awesome to be able to sit through a kids movie with them on your lap and have a good time!
Upstate NY is not a country for old screwdrivers.
"It's a total waste of time. Most people don't use their parking brakes with automatic transmissions. Its just me, and like, one other guy."

@T.J. Kong I do this as well. We have our own exclusive club.
Nice job Eric! I still drive my Dad's 2003 Dakota, I love that truck.
You know you have a reputation for doing good work when you're booked up a month in advance
I don't wanna take anything away from Eric, because he's top notch but everywhere is booked over a month right now and it sucks.
And the customers drive all the way from NY City just to have you do thier work.
That's not what screwdrivers are for?
Youre just doing your job and covering your rear end. Say you pass that inspection and something happens like the wheel flys off or something and an investigation shows you passed it when it shouldn't have been. I'd sure hate to see you get in a lot of trouble. Youre an honest guy that does the right thing.
And, if anything happened, you can be sure the owner will throw Mr E under the bus
That's highly unlikely for a situation. Please get real.
Keeps the rest of us safer, too.
Techs below the rust belt be like why do you have to grease both sides of the slides? lol. Sure is miserable working on these rusty turds here in the Northeast.
You got that right. Id love to work on cars in the south. Like texas and Arizona cars. Must be so much easier. Here in mass, brand new trucks already have rust on them lol. Idk why i was shocked when a brand new truck off the showroom floor already had rust all over the rear dif...then i remembered...everythings made way cheaper these days and this is massachusetts where everything rusts

I am that one other guy who uses his parking brake every time even though I have an automatic. And a flat driveway.
I know how you feel I used to do state inspections in Louisiana and got called that all the time when junk would roll in and fail
i used to be a Pa inspection/emissions mechanic, i gave that up a long time ago, had a guy get his 1992 Mercury Topaz inspected, left the shop, put Mustang GT wheels on it, and got in a wreck 3 hours later, state police and i had an hour long conversation, and my boss backed me up that the car had its original turbine polycast wheels on it. i gave my 2 week notice and never looked back, i didn't and don't want that looming over my head
It's good for the channel to make a comment. Political correctness....don't concern yourself with such matters. Oh that's right.....you don't. High five.

Good old NYS inspections. When I first moved to the thousand island region, from Michigan, I was kicking and screaming about those stupid inspections, until I found out I had bad tie rod ends on my van. What really sealed the deal for appreciating those pia inspections, was when I came back to Michigan for a visit, and was following a car, that's gas tank was held up by a couple of bungee cords.
I told the wife "wife, maybe those NYS inspections arent so bad afterall" lol

In 50+ years in the biz, I have never seen a stud installer. Wow
Agreed! Working on school buses & trucks, the 'stud installer' was an 8-12 pound hammer after pulling the axles/hubs.
