  • Someone rigged this Suburban to set trouble codes and have major problems, yet keep it able to function. It all started from a dead battery. The owner brought it to us for a second opinion after the crook tried to sell them a fuel pump and a new computer! Basically the other mechanic took advantage of the customer and caused a situation when the truck would run and rive normally with intermittent problems like the dead battery. The shop planned to sell the customer more parts like a fuel pump and even a new ECM computer. All of these parts are very expensive and difficult to locate. I looks like the shop planned to sell the parts and services without ever having to replace them. We found that the transmission wasn't shifting correctly and was slipping due to the botched wiring job. The vehicles was driving with the problem and it caused internal transmission damage. We removed the transmission and and found metal on the magnet and in the filter. The customer declined further repairs.

28:45 for those who don't know, transmission fluid is supposed to be clear/red. It should NEVER look like used oil. There is no combustion chamber or gasoline in the transmission to darken the oil. If it's dark like that, it's burnt from gears and clutches overheating and burning the oil that touches them which indicates a damaged or abused transmission.

My wife once took a ford escort that only had 40 thousand miles on it to a fire stone by our home for an inspection. They said it needed 912 dollars in repairs when I told them it only had 40 thousand, they thought the odometer had rolled over . I found marks where some one had crushed the brake pads with vice grips . And I did everything on the list in my garage in less than 30 minutes for 68 dollars. I would have turned them in , but I didn’t know where to .

I took a car I used to own to Firestone. It ended up costing me $4,000.00 to fix the damages, and re do the work they did incorrectly the first time. Firestone couldn't even tell me the sway bar bushings needed replacing when they installed struts. Also, the strut bushings were no good, and had to be replaced which required the removal of the struts they installed. The brake pads they installed were cheap Wagner pads, and only lasted 14,000 miles. The pads were coming apart in chunks, and they damaged the rotors. The only good things Firestone does is sell tires. They also do tell you if your brake fluid needs to be flushed because they test it for copper content. The brake job they did for me was supposed to have a fluid flush because the copper content was 200 parts per million. A year later when I complained about the brakes, they said the copper content was 300 parts per million. A clear indication they did not do the fluid flush. They did nothing during the warranty period to fix my brakes. I took it somewhere else, and they showed me the pads coming apart, and the deep grooves in the rotors from the pads. The second shop installed new rotors, and a Posiq pad. No further problems with the brakes since.

Ah, I bet the fuel pump is bad. Let the truck sit and cool down and the fuel pump will be sticking. The added wire was a work around keeping the fuel pump running all the time to keep it from stopping. The wire just added more problems to the situation. The original mechanic has no business doing work like that though. And $400 spent there, that sounded like a battery, oil change and whatever else the idiot did.

My question is, was the trans making that noise BEFORE the customer took it to that other guy? If it was, the guy might have pulled the fuse for diagnostic purposes and just forgot to replace it...still his fault either way. The jumper wire to the fuel pump making it run 24/7 was certainly not an "accident" so that makes me suspect the fuse was done on purpose as well. The missing relay is very suspicious too. After diagnosing the problem, I found that the previous tech had only changed 3 plugs and 3 wires on the front, because the ones on the back were harder to get too, plus for the customer, it's hard to see. The guy charged her 425.00 for 3 plugs and wires, plus the parts were cheap also. I replaced all parts OEM parts, problem solved. She went back to previous shop, presented her case, tech fired, and she was compensated. Oh well. Thank God for honest techs. Tkx keep up the good work.

I bet the engine continuing to run issue when turned off was the rouge jumper wire powering the fuel pump. When the relay was installed, the ECU turned it on, and the power back fed thru the relay that is now closed to the ignition 1 power circuit.

    • @Craig1967
      @Craig1967 2 года назад +1

@@brandonsilvay4822 Without seeing a schematic, I don't know for sure. I think that once the engine was started, that caused the fuel pump relay (when installed) to close which would then apply battery to the fuel pump, and then back feed thru the jumper to the Ignition 1 power rail. That would in turn keep the computer up and running even after turning off the ignition switch. Since the computer is up and running it would in turn keep the fuel pump relay closed. The computer would "think" that the ignition switch is on due to the Ignition 1 rail being present. The engine would then continue to run. Unplugging the fuel pump relay breaks the loop and then the engine will shut off. Its not the fuel pump being stuck on alone that causes the engine to continue to run - its not a diesel as you already pointed out. I remember GM Fierro's would only turn the fuel pump on during starting, and then a separate isolated switch would close when there was oil pressure, bypassing the relay. This served as a fuel cut off safety if the engine stalled, or there was no oil pressure.

Years back things were slower heavier etc but rarely did you see failures like we get nowadays. Alot of modern engines won't tolerate neglect or abuse like their forerunners. The V6 isn't the smoothest of engines at best of times unlike the straight 6 which is naturally well balanced statically and dynamically. The current crop of Ford diesels are pretty poor anyway as I've had my filthy mitts on many and seem to be built to a cost and as seen here not very well designed 😔 keep up the great work guys and looking forward to the next video 👍

Imagine if a shop were to have all mechanics wear a go-pro on their heads and video record all diagnostic procedures and repairs. Then the shop would save them in a data file on each vehicle so that if requested the owners could review the documentation of diagnostic procedures and repairs done. That would be a pretty interesting business model. Heck on top of that that shop could also have a youtube clause the customer could approve or deny the possibility of their car being posted to youtube. Actually, that's a pretty cool idea.

This video that you made here, there's my most favorite video of all. I was a mechanic for 25 years and had to retire last year because of health issues. I never really got the chance to be much of a diagnostic person because they always need me to do the work. Even though I haven't had that much diagnostic experience watching your video I realized as soon as you found that fuse. I immediately thought with the title said, "sabotage!" And yes with the sabotage that was done to the vehicle. Definitely hurt that transmission! Anyways with that said. You're getting the thumbs-up not because you did a good job, you did an outstanding job in my eyes! I thought I was pretty knowledgeable until I saw this video. And you are amazing! TL/DR - I found another mechanic's sabotage done to an ambulance causing over $10k in damages and losses to the owner
The story: I'm in the middle of a similar situation involving a dishonest "mechanic" but the financial damages done are 20+ fold of the ones in this video. A couple of months ago I had a local ambulance company contact me, they were looking for a new mechanic to do the maintenance and repairs for their fleet. The guy they had been using they wanted to part ways with because he was regularly putting them on the back burner plus they had concerns that he may be selling them work that wasn't needed.
When I started doing work for them, the other guy still had 1 of their ambulances but wouldn't return it initially because he had already started work on it. From what I was told there was a bit of a confrontation between the mechanic and the owner of the ambulance at that time. A week or so later, the ambulance was returned to the owner but it was running worse than when it was dropped off. It was given straight to me and all I knew at that time was the other guy had done spark plugs, 4 new ignition coils and intake manifold gasket (ford 6.8L V10) and that it was running like shit. When I ran the engine the first time, it had an obvious misfire and a scan revealed misfires on cyl 1, 8 and 10. I first suspected a quality of repair issue as I had already seen poor quality in the guys work on a couple other ambulance, including one that nearly resulted in a fire. Ultimately what I found was cyl 1 and 10 had low compression and cyl 8 had no compression. Draining the oil revealed bearing material suspended in the oil along with a number of metal pieces in the filter.
I brought my findings to the owner who wanted to further investigate possible repairs to the current engine before moving forward with a replacement. Ultimately, I found that there was a bolt lodged in the intake runner on cyl 8 that bent the valve and broke the rocker arm and video scope revealed damage to cylinder walls in cyl 1 and 10 result of foreign debris, such as a screw or bolt. Engine was completely trashed and it was obvious sabotage. I feel bad for the guy that owns it because a reman engine is going to run him 4400 and another 1500 for labor. Include the ambulances down time and his total loss is over $10,000. I documented my findings thoroughly, with photos and in detailed writing. Same as you, I give the benefit of doubt whenever I can, but this one was an blatantly obvious case of foul play. I urged the ambulance owner to pursue the case in court and even offered to testify my findings in front of a judge if need be. It remains to be seen what will become of this as we are waiting on the replacement engine still and this is all in progress.
This case, more than any other case of shotty workmanship or foul play that I've seen while working in this field, is the case that bothers me the most because of the financial loss involved. The guys that own and operate the company are really good people, not to mention their company provides services that saves lives. And for another mechanic to knowingly cause this kind of financial damage to a company who's purpose is to help people in need and save lives... it honestly sickens me.
Anyways, kudos to you for being the honest one in your case. I hope everything works out for your customer.

Thanks for being one of the good and honest mechanics out there. My late mother was a merchandiser that frequently kept her out on the road. During one of her business trips the check engine light came on and she brought it to the next auto repair place she came across. (Her company would cover the bill, you see.) I don't recall what they claimed that it was but she had them fix it.
Once back out on the road she accelerated up to the speed of traffic. She took her foot off of the gas as traffic started to slow and the car's speed didn't decrease and no she wasn't using cruise control. She struggled with the breaks against the accelerator, while weaving through traffic and eventually had to put it into neutral to bring it to a safe stop. Needless to say it was a terrifying experience.
She was close to home by then and had it towed to her usual mechanic. There, they found the rod that led from the accelerator pedal to the engine had been bent thereby preventing it from returning to it's default position. Her mechanic said it was impossible for her to have bent it, no matter how hard she pushed on the pedal and that it had to have been the mechanic she stopped by that did it. With his testimony her company threatened legal action against the auto shop and were reimbursed for the damages. Personally I think the mechanic should have been charged with something like reckless endangerment because she could've very well been killed.

I used to turn wrenches. It really is a tough field to make a living in. Today's "mechanics" truly are scientists as they work within numerous fields of science. I wasn't one of those that could cut it enough to keep a steady check coming in.
Since then, I've switched fields of profession, but I do still go out and help people that have vehicles that are stranded remotely or can't afford the full bill for a shop repair until they can get back to work.
Almost always I get asked if the person that worked on the vehicle before me was trying to rip them off. Even if I do suspect some kind of foul play, the worst I'm comfortable saying is "They might not have known this system as well as they thought."
Good on you for making this video and not dragging the previous shop, even though it's quit evident that some parts were removed and some extras added. The video speaks for itself.

Scientists do not fix things. they research and invent things. And engineers design and make things. The people who fix things are technicians or mechanics, no matter how complicated those things are.

@@keithrushforth4019 - Really? Wow, I guess myself and the thousands of other experimental scientists who design, make, and fix our equipment and apparatus must not be scientists huh?
Guess I should have called a mechanic to repair and realign the raman spectrometer I just fixed. Seriously though, I would suggest taking a tour of an experimental science lab. Some of the equipment experimental scientists design, build and maintain would quickly humble you.

I ran into that kind of stuff back in the 1970s in Pompano Beach when gas stations used to have repair shops now those were the days a friend of mine and I did everything in those garages back in the day and parts were abundant back in those days. And every once in a while we would run in two cars that came down from New York City complaining about their vehicle not running properly we would do the troubleshooting and find exactly what you're talkin about they were getting set up for when they return back home a big repair on their Cadillac most of the vehicles were Cadillacs if you owned Cadillac and you drove from New York City to Florida you could be a Target it would be amazing corrupt mechanics would do to customers their customers. There's dirtbags everywhere and watching your videos just shows you things haven't changed much have they. You're an honest man and you are going to be blessed for that because you deserve to be blessed. I cannot count how many different jobs I had during those times because I would not rip off a customer. I have to live with my conscience and my policy is to be totally honest even when I was I was accused of wrongdoing but I didn't let that bother me because I know who I am and I'm still that way today. You are going to go a long way my friend I love your silliness I love your videos and I really love your honesty. God bless you and your family may God keep you safe always amen

Great Trouble Shooting Procedure(s). Lots of faults that may be interrelated, or may not be.
You poked around to get a feel for what was going on then focused on one problem at a time and solved it, then the next problem and soforth.
You did well for this customer, your shop's reputation, and you will probably have a new repeat customer, and new customers from his recommendations.
    Good Work, my Good Man......

Loved seeing the diagnosis. Sad that the last mechanic was trying to rip the owner off. For myself personally it’s been a while since I’ve been truly ripped off by a mechanic/technician but at the time I feel like the #1 contributing factor to it was my age. Both times it happened I was 18 and I feel like the shop did it because they thought I was young and wouldn’t know any better. Its nice to see somebody like yourself putting this kind of information out there for people to learn from.

You can increase the reliabilty and lifespan of almost any vehicle by taking care of it and following the manufacturers recommended maintenance schedule. I use software on my laptop called Automotive Wolf that tracks and manages the schedules for all my vehicles. I currently have 3 cars from different manufacturers all with over 200,000 miles and running great.

You have my respect for your integrity, bro... It's a shame scammers give the good guys in the auto industry (not only repair, unfortunately, but as a whole) a bad name. Every town needs a mechanic like you fr. Sketchy auto shops and shoddy work is the main reason I DIY as much as possible, though there's never enough time in a weekend. If I could simply TRUST the man repairing my vehicle I'd never do more than oil changes...A mentor once told me a great quote, (just Googled the origin) attributed to C.S. Lewis; "Integrity is what you do when no one is watching"... Made an impact on me and I thought of that even tho I was WATCHING your vid😆.... God bless and thanks for the reminder that there's still some good men out there. Subbed🤜🤛

Great video. It's nice to see a mechanic who cares about his work standards and not his wallet. You are right about peoples option on auto mechanics and shops because of the ones who try to screw people around. This image has not changed in my 70 years. When they find out that I'm an aircraft and jet engine mechanic they usually change their story real fast. In aviation you called a bad mechanic an " Auto Mechanic " as a insult on how they worked on planes and engines. It shows no matter what you work on once you have that image in peoples minds it's nearly impossible to change it for the good. There should be more mechanics like you around this world and someday things will change God willing.

In owning cars for the last 47 years have never brought one to a mechanic in fear of being ripped off. It is nice to see a decent mechanic troubleshoot vehicles and do a proper repair. After an initial transmission fluid and filter change due to a black ATF color (bought the van used) I welded a drain plug on the transmission pan and change the fluid yearly for about $50 CDN. WIll change the filter at 300,000 Km. Keep on making more videos as you appear to fix a multitude of problems on many different models.

A special note: How lucky I am to have a son who graduated from Lincoln Tech University and has literally worked on anything that has wheels. He's a highly educated and very experienced technician that I trust working on my Lexus. His status as shop foreman speaks for itself. I'm a Rainman Ray fan because he reminds me of my son.
