fun fact. That final follows archer avenue all the way in and goes right above my old apartment. I used to really enjoy roof sitting during the summer and watch that big bank you did and watch all the birds fly right over head. Really awesome to see that perspective from the air. Makes me miss home even more. Thanks for sharing!
Grew up not too far from Midway, as good Catholic boys my brother and I would ditch church on Sundays and grab some White Castles and hang out watching planes in a lot they used to have on the SE corner of the airport. Got to land there once when I was working on my private with my instructor in a 172, that was pretty cool!
Total area of Chicago is 234.5 sq miles! Nostalgia for me. I flew out of Midway when I left the States for Europe in 1965. Thanks for the really exciting and impressive video.
1952 we visited Chicago to see my uncle off to the Korean Conflict. I still have a very vivid picture in my mind of the beautiful TWA Connie. At 5-years old and everything being so different - walked to the plane - that Connie appeared to be only a couple hundred feet from me. Gawd! What a beautiful aircraft that was.
One of my most memorable skydives was a demonstration jump, landing next to MDW. I exited a C182 and opened at 4000' agl. Looking down, I noticed around 6 SW Airlines 737's holding short of runway 31C. Knowing they where waiting for me, I took my time landing. Welcome to Chicago Steveo!
3:35 Grissom was actually called Bunker Hill Naval Station before it became Grissom Air Force Base in 1968. It was named after astronaut Virgil "Gus" Grissom, an Indiana native, who perished during a fire in the Apollo capsule at Cape Kennedy, FL, in 1967. It is now called Grissom Air Force Reserve Base, which hosts the 434th Air Refueling Wing, and it continues its mission of air refueling operations. It is home to the largest KC-135R Stratotanker wing in the Air Force Reserve Command. My dad finished out the last few years of his 20 year career as a crew chief mechanic for the Air Force at this base.
I transited through MDW in 2005 en route from ABQ to Laguardia NY, spent about 4 hours in the airport. Took some nice pics of the airport after taking off, snow everywhere. Thanks for the trip, very nice.
This is totally enjoyable. Really love the commentary about the temps outside as the plane is gradually descending, etc. etc. The background chatter with flight control is totally fascinating.
Yup - did it about 30 years ago in my Cherokee 180. I was #3 for landing. #1, 2 and 4 were 737's. Came in hot, chopped power over the threshold, when I hit flap speed, dumped all of the flaps, held it off and bled off as much speed as I could, landed and made the mid field high speed turnoff. Got a thanks from the tower for expediting the landing.
I was born in South Chicago. My Aunt & Uncle lived in Forest View, and I vividly remember watching the planes in the pattern when I was very young. Moved south in 1966 and have only been back a few times. I would love nothing more than to do an actual approach to that airport!
I flew my Piper Archer into Midway in 2016 I was solo IFR , originating in West Chester PA. The Terminal area controllers could not be nicer or more helpful. I was attending a week long seminar at Chicago Booth . I made the return trip solo IFR talking to the spirit of my father frequently along the way home .
My wife is from Miller Indiana (South Shore) That industrial area you were flying over was the Gary Steel Mill, although still operational they don't produce anything close to what they did during the war.
the industrial area around 12:00 is Gary, Indiana. decades ago it was one of the most important cities in the country and produced a huge amount of steel and other materials.
I'm inclined to disagree. Gary, IN would be on his left side. Steveo says, "Look off the right, massive complex of industrial area." He's looking at Burns Harbor, IN.
Welcome to Chicago Steveo. I got my PPL out of Midway and I fly in and out of there often. My office is 5 minutes away. Your videos helped me a lot. I try to emulate your professionalism. Thank you.
Thanks for the nice ride into my old hometown. I fly into MDW a lot to visit my folks. It was nice to watch all that snow from Southern California :) Thanks for not skidding off the runway onto Cicero Avenue 😂
It has been a long time since I have flown with snow on the ground, and it was like this day when we went, our runway was cover with snow, and our heater wasn't putting out a lot heat, I didn't care how cold it was I got to go flying that day. I am glad I watch this one. It always fun to fly anytime. I always watch your videos.
Fantastic footage Steveo, loved the "best forward speed" moment. Reminded me of speaking to a pilot years ago about their approach to Heathrow in a Piper Seneca (she was pilot of Capital Radios Flying Eye). In her words "approach at full speed, aim for the halfway point, and at the last minute drop all the dangly stuff to slow down"!
That big rail yard is where I work Stevo. That's the BNSF Corwith Yard, and it's always great watching planes flying over us, going into Midway. I've only landed a plane at Midway one time, during flight school. My instructor wanted me to fly into a Class Charlie, so we did Midway.
With all that wind, still a butter smooth landing. Awesome! You're right, Chicago is massive. I used to boogie around that town in my semi. Glad that's all over with. Always love your flights. Best wishes.
Flew out of MDW many times a year in the 60s 70s. My dad and brother had a Cessna 337 and 182s at different times hangered at the old AA hanger on 55th St.. Until I left Chicago 13 years ago, SWA had me as a frequent flyer. and Midway Airlines before that.
I took 2 Navy students in a 206 Bell Jet Ranger from Pensacola up to Midway and landed directly into our parking spot at Millionaire (FBO at the time). L O N G flight, but it was awesome!
These videos are great! I don't fly, but I sure enjoy riding along and hearing all the activity and communication with ATC. Really well done. I find my self watching one any time I can. Video production is excellent.
Nice. I am watching this from my home office which is almost five miles off your right wing at touchdown on 22R. I know it is almost five miles because I need to request clearance to fly my drone from my backyard. I sat in the Signature lobby a few months ago waiting for my nephew who flies a charter Gulfstream. That was a beautiful view of downtown.
Envious Stevo. I grew up at mdw in the 60s. Used to hang out at the g&a hangers where u turned off 22r. Get in 727s, etc at terminal. Nat.guard choppers ,south end. Best friend went on to be Capt for AA. Finally went for my ppl in 2019. Had to bale before solo in 2020. Too old now. Love your vids. 😎
Had a Daughter that lived in Chicago for Way too much time. Glad to be out of that town. Made that trip every 3 weeks, NEVER made it out of there on time, flying Southwest. Great place to visit but NOT to live. If you are planning on going there for Northwestern, I would look at a Alternative option!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you do go there for fun, be sure to see the field museum, Navy Pier, Architecture tour and Get some Garrett popcorn or some pizza!!
I am a former Navy Pilot with 2500 hours. Watching your videos, with all the automation makes me feel about 2500 years old. I remember shooting ADF approaches to radio towers in Pensacola Fl.
That Signature ramp is tight. They've handled Air Force 2 (757) when VPOTUS has chosen to use MDW but I believe they close 4L/22R for prkg. Nicely done dealing w/that gusty wind.
You should check out Grissom. There's an AFB there with an aviation museum. So cool you mentioned Red Bud...used to go there as a kid as my neighbor used to ride.
Thank you for sharing your trip here to Chicago. It was snow here a couple of days ago. And the weekend the snow has melted. And it was in the 40s here for just yesterday, Sunday and Saturday. But thanks again for sharing your nice flying.
I believe the city you flew over at 3:49 is my home town of Logansport, IN (KGGP). We have two rivers - the Wabash flows through east to west and the Eel river joins the Wabash from the northeast right in our town. You mentioned "Grissom"; that is a nearby Air Force Reserve base which has a radar approach control facility. Grissom handles lower altitude civilian traffic - I believe 10K and below.
A full day in the air it sounds like. Love the view into Midway! That wind is whipping holy smokes great job bringing it in Steveo bet it was a lot of work!
Last few times I’ve flown commercial (pax, I’m no pilot, just enthusiast) into Chicago O’Hare it’s been quite aggressive on the decent when they pickup the RNAV. Holy crap lol. His explains it. It’s been busy as I follow the flight radar while flying.
Great video. I use to fly around VPZ in a cherokee warrior. Too old and to many health issues along with the cost for fun. Thanks for sharing your videos.
I learned Flight Simulator on a 1.8 megahertz Atari 1200 computer. Now 40 years later, I fly on a 6100 megahertz Intel i9-13900k computer with 43" 4K monitor and all the proper controls. It was worth the wait!! Meigs field now looks like a real airport.

You should go to Alaska in the winter and go for a ride in a DHC2 Beaver std. to find out what it's like to be cold in an airplane. Your TBM wouldn't seem so cold after that. 😁
I grew up in Logansport, IN. The Grissom, (GUS) is Grissom Air Reserve Base named after the Virgil "Gus Grissom. I remember driving past "Bunker Hill" (now Grissom} in the mid-60s when I was about 10 at the same time a flight of B-58 Hustlers were taking off with full afterburners. My Dad and I stopped the car almost directly under them as they crossed at about 100 feet and just watched in awe. Could have been carrying nukes since it was a SAC base.
I remember in the mid 80's we went to look at a Cherokee 6 there to purchase. (ended up with a 210) . In the hanger was a dusty P-51 That a Dr. owned and it hadn't flown for a while. I was amazed at how gigantic the prop was!
I used to rent out of Midway before 911. Afterwards they moved the FBO off the airport, they tossed you the keys, drive back to the airport, park and go through security. Then a guy in a golf cart takes you to the plane. Very inconvenient. Anyway I was more nervous taxing as it is a mouse maze of taxiways. Kinda neat to do an approach and waving at passengers in a DC9 on a parallel runway. They always passed me for some reason.
I fly in/out of MDW on a regular basis, not my favorite place but I will say that ATC here are masters at flow management and yes, they always want max forward speed. As long as you are on your game and don’t miss any calls, should be good to go. The RNAV to 22L is a cool approach with an amazing view of downtown.
This area was the default starting point of so many old versions of Flight simulator with the former Meigs field. Spent so much virtual time here
OMG. The old Meigs field in FS!! So many great hours!!
Meigs in FS was one fun airport! RIP.
The thousands I "killed" trying do pretty much the same landing Steve just made...
as part of Microsoft Flight Sim's 40th anniversary last year, they put Meigs Field back into the new game, even though it's gone in real life :)
When you fly into Midway, ask for a Navy/Marine pilot with Carrier experience!
I'm always astounded at how much atc info you can absorb. A very enjoyable flight to ride along. Thanks for taking me along.
fun fact. That final follows archer avenue all the way in and goes right above my old apartment. That was my first rotation in 1986
That's awesome. I love their outdoor museum of jets. Been there many times
Awesome landing!
Thanks Steve, you gave an excellent narration of the approach and challenges you prepared yourself for in advance.
Great snowbird approach into Midway with the epic, cool, crisp view of downtown Chicago! ✈💙
Redbud Track and Trail is a fun track to race and open ride. Living only an hour away from the track, I attended both Mxon’s and many Nationals.
Good job steveo. thanks for taking us along brother 👍
I really wish Meigs Field had never closed. That was such a nice airport. Also yes that approach was very bumpy and windy!
I transited through MDW in 2005 en route from ABQ to Laguardia NY, spent about 4 hours in the airport. Took some nice pics of the airport after taking off, snow everywhere. Thanks for the trip, very nice.

Welcome to Midwest flying in winter! You got a small taste of our daily adventures

ty, idk this popped up in my feed, maybe bc i love WW2 airshows....but i lived in the chicago suburbs for 11 years...great to see the view again...
Welcome to Chicago! those are common approaches (over the lake) for both MDW/ORD. Nice to see it from the front row!
That taxi-in was sick. Super cool to see you navigate through those larger jets. Great video and I enjoyed it very much.
Crack ground crew -- I am sure the cookies are all gone.
I am from the Northeast and I enjoy seeing the snow-covered landscape from the air. Great flying as usual Steveo
I grew up under the 22R glide slope about a mile from the threshold in the MDW heydays of the 1950's. You are always welcome here!
I’m actually from Logansport, IN, Steveo! You were flying over Grissom Air Force Base… so cool to hear you call that out! Keep up the great videos.
My wife is from Miller Indiana (South Shore) That industrial area you were flying over was the Gary Steel Mill, although still operational they don't produce anything close to what they did during the war.
Steveo, grew up in Gary Indiana and saw that skyline most every day. Your video took me back to some of those good old days. Thanks for Sharing!
Nice flight, and you are calm, smooth, confident and competent with your piloting from stem to stern. Thanks Steve-O!
The TBM is a very beautiful Plane. Greets from Germany 🙋♂️👌✌️
I sure hope there are more pilots out there as good as you are! Take care out there!
Beautiful snowy landscape ! What a difficult approach with this wind ! Thank you Sir ! ( like every time , the same great piece of pleasure)
the industrial area around 12:00 is Gary, Indiana. decades ago it was one of the most important cities in the country and produced a huge amount of steel and other materials.
Also known as the home of the Jackson Five, Michael and his brothers.
Today, it’s a crap hole

We used to do touch and go's at MDW when I was doing my private training. It's surprisingly not as busy as you would think.
Bunker Hill Indiana is where Grissom Air Reserve Base is located.
We just recently flew over Grissom in our Boston or Bust series, great/friendly controller there too!!!
That was some funky marshalling. The guy in front signaling one thing while looking at the guys to the right flailing their arms around.
Hence why I just decided to stop and shut the engine down.
Fantastic footage Steveo, loved the "best forward speed" moment. I enjoyed watching your video. I’m originally from MKE but moved to CA years ago… brought back some memories… 😎
One of the most entertaining and interesting videos I have watched. The terminology blows my mind. Thank you for the video.
Love that you’re flying into my hometown! Best view ever 😀
Wow, how are you so calm on such a bumpy approach ...Awesome landing
Nice. I am watching this from my home office which is almost five miles off your right wing at touchdown on 22R. Your a great IFR pilot! I learn a lot from your flights.
I got sweaty palms just watching you fly out over the lake in a single this time of year.

Midway... what a dump! Thanks for bringing us along Steveo!!
Good morning from Minnesota! Welcome to the cold snowy Midwest!
Nice to hear South Bend on the radios. I live there, love your channel.
Had a Daughter that lived in Chicago for Way too much time. Glad to be out of that town. Made that trip every 3 weeks, NEVER made it out of there on time, flying Southwest. I had some cousins that lived in Logansport many years ago. They ran a hardware store if I remember correctly. Last name was Bergin.
Always fun to see some hand flying...Enjoyed the ride with ya!
A full day in the air it sounds like. Love the view into Midway! That wind is whipping holy smokes great job bringing it in Steveo bet it was a lot of work!
Beautiful flight Steveo! That view never gets old. Thanks for letting me ride along!
Years ago when I was learning how to fly, I used to fly from 06C over to MDW. The atc was always friendly and took their time with me.
06C! Pilot Pete's!
This one was extra cool for me! My airport (IN33) is just a few miles north of Grissom (KGUS). Pretty nice hearing some familiar names...🙂
Mighty unusual seeing you amidst the cold & snow, Steve...
Nice to finally see you in my part of town!
Great video! Thanks for the ride👍 24:58
A complete video of you coming into Chicago? Sure, why not?! Nice change of pace! That was 25 minutes well-spent. Thanks.
Fun flight and what a tight squeeze on the ramp.
I had the pleasure of landing at Meigs before it was shut down back in the day. Awesome airport. What a shame it’s gone.
Grissom AFB Indiana was A10s and KC135s. Partial civilian airport now. I used to be a part of the 930 CAMS (Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance) at Grissom in the 90s..
This must have been right over Christmas. It's was bitterly cold but January and February were pretty darn warm.
I admire the skill it takes to land a plane.... God keep you safe....
Check out GYY sometime. They’ll pull a black car plane-side for your client and you’ll be downtown super fast with the tollway. Also the cheapest C.A.A. fuel and reasonable ramp fees. If only they would rename the airport Chicago Executive South Airport.
This is really cool! I watch mostly SW flights making this approach from our apartment. It's great to see it from the pilot's perspective.
@@petersilver4294 a flight of B58’s in full AB 100’ overhead. I’ll bet that was LOUD
You have no idea. I think they wanted to make sure they heard them in Moscow.
We don’t get to Chicago often but every time we have flown in there the wind was always blowing hard. And cold as heck
Nice flight! At the 10:30 mark, my home airport is in lower left of screen. I love watching planes on the arrival from my farm!
Northwest Indiana (Gary) is very industrial. Steel Mills were very popular back in the day.
this was one of my favs to watch!
I remember in the mid 80's we went to look at a Cherokee 6 there to purchase. (ended up with a 210) . In the hanger was a dusty P-51 That a Dr. owned and it hadn't flown for a while. I was amazed at how gigantic the prop was!
In the early '60's someone kept a 51 there....they would allow him to strafe 22R then do a go around for landing. Maybe the same plane?!
You started your video just off of Muncie Indiana, my home town. Grissom is for Gus Grissom and its an Reserve base for KC135's.
Coming from a small town, Chicago just looks so immense and complicated. Great video Steveo.
the funny part --- I know you flew above my house, but I couldn't find it. This was fun to watch
Needed to see Steveo walk outside with his ‘light’ jacket 😮
KVPZ home airport, glad to see you up here!!
SteveO! Great to see you operating. Thanks again.
