How Japan's Government Got Mr Resetti Fired

- Animal Crossing: New Horizons is finally here, and so, apparently, is Mr Resetti. The irate mole is no longer the head of the Reset Surveillance Centre, but he does make an appearance in the game, taking phone calls for the Rescue Service and, we can only assume, flying a helicopter.
It’s early days, we wrote this video before the game came out. If we’re way off with our understanding of his role, we’ll have to chalk it up to our lack of psychic powers.
Anyway, Mr Resetti’s role in Animal Crossing has changed a lot over the years. He was initially introduced as a fun if passive aggressive way to convince the player to save their game before turning it off, but he’s morphed into more than that. He’s a mainstay of the series, just as recognizable and lovable as Tom Nook or Isabelle.
If you’re not getting yelled at by Mr Resetti, you’re not playing Animal Crossing. Or, at least, not playing an older Animal Crossing, before the games started autosaving.
It’s fun just how much of Animal Crossing’s odd quirks are based on Japanese popular culture and even politics. The decision to fire Mr Resetti came as a response to real world spending cuts that the Japanese government was undertaking.
Anyone who wants to keep politics out of games should therefore boycott Animal Crossing on principle, as Mr Resetti’s turbulent career reflects real world politics and the challenge of balancing public spending.

Mr. Resetti is more powerful than people realize. When you reset, everyone in the game is none the wiser. They're simply sent back in time to the point of your last save. Everyone is unaware except you... and Mr. Resetti.

You missed how in Happy Home Designer it was established that he had developed heart problems from years of yelling at everyone and stressing about the rules. He HAD to change jobs or he'd die.

In the game cube version the ds version and the Wii version he talks about it not being good for his health and he can't keep doing it
so that's the in-universe explanation? I guess that works, since you can choose to have him keep his job a little while longer in New Leaf and that takes place before HHD. Not sure about Pocket Camp as I never played it, but I guess he managed to find something that isn't as stressful or enraging by the time New Horizons happened... but I can still see him blowing a blood vessel if you keep prank calling him for a rescue when you really don't need one :P

I remember leaving the room once to do something with the game on pause. I came back and my dad began to lecture me on how it was time for bed and how he shouldn't be the one to have to turn my GameCube off. As soon as I realized what he said, I dreaded the next day for when I wanted to play AC. When I turned it on the next day, it was Mr. Resetti's brother that came up, all calm like, and "lectured" me. I can't tell you how relieved I was.

When people try to datamine the game, Resetti will show up and show you just how scary he can be.
Resetti in 2001: Scares everyone into saving before resetting, too well in fact.
Resetti in 2005: More of the same, but likes going to the local coffee shop.
Resetti in 2008: Same old Resetti, just slightly less aggressive.
Resetti in 2012: WAY more chill, but still has a bit of a tantrum, and isn't around unless you approve of the reset surveillance center.
Resetti now: *FLIES A HELICOPTER, AND RESETS YOUR POSITION*

On the surface he seems like a greedy businessman who cares only for your precious bells, but he donates 90% of it to charity, adopted two orphans, and tries to teach them and everyone else good buisness. He even got scammed out of his money and now look at him! He owns entire towns and islands, real estate, an entire airline, he has his own bank! So, the saddest part in ACNH is, that Resetti doesn't say his name. After calling the rescue service for a few times, he said: Everything's paletti, it's Res- The Rescue service.
And it almost made me cry.

When I tried to get help from him before when I didn't have enough Miles, he got really angry and started screaming then said "Deep breaths, Resetti" under his breath to calm himself down.

Same, I played Animal Crossing on my friend's Gamecube and go right to my bed because of being traumatized by Mr. Resetti.
Wait, his purpose was to help people REMEMBER to save?? I always thought he was there to punish save scummers. Even when I was a little kid I never just forgot to save. If I turned off the game without saving, it was either on purpose or because the game froze.

I learned to save games from a very very young age...so when I played the gamecube animal crossing I already knew how saving worked etc. So I thought he was there just as you did Catherine. Just there to yell at people who made a bad decision and wanted to go back to fix it

That was what I thought too! If someone just forgot to save, I'm pretty sure that losing all their hard work would be motivation enough. Why would you need any more?
That's part of why I never liked Mr. Resetti as a kid (that, and of course the fact that he's a huge jerk). The way I choose to play my game is my business, nobody else's. If the devs needed someone to screech at people for playing a game "wrong", well, that's what Internet fandoms are for.

I'm gonna be honest, even when I first played it, I loved Mr. Resetti; he's got the most character out of the entire cast, and losing him made the later titles feel like something was missing. However, I do get why they would take him out. I'm glad he's back in ACNH, even if his role is a bit different.

Lavender :3 I’m guessing fill your inventory with items, create an enclosed space, fill the ground with items, and then you’re stuck. You’ll need to generate more items on the ground while inside the enclosure, but that’s doable using items from rocks or trees.
The irony is the very thing Resetti tried to stop us from doing makes his job completely pointless. You always come out of your house, so resetting the game if you get stuck not only solves the problems but saves you some Nook miles.

Forgot to save once. Got lectured by resetti, never forgot to save again.
The system worked.
5:03 He was upfront and abrasive because he cared, he realized he had to get it through to the players so they really understood the consequences of their actions. He never was a bad guy.

In the Animal Crossing: Wild World, I have on the Wii U Virtual Console, and I would purposefully reset (after saving, of course) just to see his dialogue. His dialogue is that entertaining to look at! Unless, you're a young kid...

I remember when I was younger and played Wild World, Mr. Resetti terrified me. His theme music alone made me cry because I was so scared of him. I HATED confrontation and responsibility (and still do), and Resetti was the living embodiment of all of that fear. However, I kinda started to respect him as I got older, as he was sorta silly. Just a lil grumpy mole boi.

I'll be honest, I always found Mr. Resetti such a funny idea that I never thought about how he might appear to other people. I'll definitely keep this in mind with my own work.

I still remember meeting mister Resetti for the first time, I was like 18-19 at the time, so of course, I wasn't terrified but I was like "what the f...!?"
I liked Mr. Resetti, and I just wish that they at least put his model in New Horizons, all we get is some dialogue.
Mr Resetti was honestly kind of a jerk back in the day... but let’s not forget that the rest of the original cast could also be jerks if you pushed them the wrong way.

One of the reasons that the grouchy characters have always been my favorite is that it actually felt like you had to *work* for their friendship, at least in the gamecube version. It felt rewarding and like you actually earned it.
If you consider the villagers in Animal Crossing assholes, then I don't know how will you react to real world real assholes.
That was the best part about the original games...
I seriously doubt that he made many kiddos cry. I played the GameCube game at like 10 yrs old and his appearances were funny at first, then simply annoying. Then when he threatened to delete my save, I pushed him further to see if he really would. He didn't.
Maybe for 5 or 6 year olds he would be frightening. But 5 or 6 year olds are not the broader market of the game

A lot of young kids play Animal Crossing lol (I first played WW when I was 6) so being screamed at and forced to write "I am stupid" 5 times got old real fast sdfsks

Yeah I was scared of Resetti when I was small; I remember crying once too. Thing is, my older brother got me City Folk before I was old enough to read like, *well*. It came out when I was 5 or 6 and that's when I got it. Being not able to read all that well but constantly being yelled at and at one point being told to call myself stupid was NOT enjoyed by small me, lol. Especially since I couldn't 100% make out what he was trying to tell me for a while.

I mean the mechanic in general was hilarious and was unique for a game to scold you just for losing a save. However why auto save wasn’t invented for both the Wii and 3DS for their respective games is beyond me honestly.

I played Wildworld when I was in fourth grade on my Nintendo DS and Resetti absolutely terrified me so much that I eventually felt compelled to destroy my game card, I didn't succeed and ended up just throwing it away but he routinely made me cry. I tried to save my game always but my problem is that I would always forget to charge and sometimes my DS would die while I was playing. It wasn't even his aggressiveness that frightened me it was how much control he had, occasionally he wouldn't let you enter the game until after what seemed like 20 minutes of dialogue, he would make you write out "I'm an Idiot" and claim you did it wrong even if you wrote it out correctly and make you rate how "stupid you are" on a scale. Sometimes I even had to shut off the game and try enduring his dialogue for a second time because he wouldn't let me play no matter what I did. I remember running to my Dad crying and him being pretty horrified himself at what I was playing. It almost made me feel crazy which is why I had to throw it away. Now as a 22 year old the game is incredibly nostalgic and I bought a Switch just for New Horizons but whenever I hear his name I do panic inside....

I remember when I played this game as a 4 year old I accidentally didn’t save. When I went to play the game and Mr. Resetti got mad at me, I cried for a solid 5 minutes. I’m 15 now, and glad that auto save is a feature. But he now yells at me when I get stuck somewhere

I can comment, as a kid, I was TERRIFIED of Resetti. My house only had 2 chargers for 4 ds'. So my ds died all the time. I refused to play again until my sister fixed it for me. He was so scary to me. And honestly, I still get a bit scared of him nowadays.

I was so traumatized by Resetti when I was 8 that when my friend had him in her game, I had to hide in another room crying. I had nightmare for years and it took me 7 years to play again to an Animal Crossing game.....But now I love this character

Maximum Force I’m honestly shocked by the number of people that were scared of him. I always thought he was hilarious, even when I was a little kid. I would reset the game intentionally just to see all his dialogue.

When I first played Animal Crossing, I wasn’t scared of him. If anything, I thought he was just annoying. But I later went on and I now really like the character.
Only time he ever annoyed me was when I was playing City Folk and my power went out and he yelled at me for not saving

Oh, Resetti would absolutely HATE Flowey. Flowey thrives in moral ambiguity and exploits it for all it's worth. Resetti has zero patience for moral ambiguity. Flowey is a known save scummer, and Resetti exists to punish save scumming. The two would be irreconcilable enemies.

I'll admit, never had the console for animal crossing when I was younger, so I never met Sonny until new leaf, and by then he was absolutely charming he pops out all mad, but since I really only ever shut down without saving due to batteries or hardware issues he was always really apologetic and polite after, honestly I'd be upset if he weren't in the new game, also that little "I have no idea what I'm doing!" illustration is adorable!
