Why Tom Nook is "Misunderstood" According to Animal Crossing Devs

  • Tom Nook is seen by many as the villain of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. After all, he withholds information about the cost of his deserted island getaway package, he slaps the player with a large loan for his services, and then he sits back, waiting for the money to roll in.
According to Animal Crossing developers Aya Kyogoku and Hisashi Nogami, Tom Nook isn’t actually a bad guy. He’s misunderstood. If you look at things from another point of view, he’s actually the hero of the games, providing resources to those in need, giving them as much time as they want to repay him, and never asking for a penny more than he lends.
Tom Nook is a tanuki, a real life animal in Japan, but also a large part of Japanese folklore. Tanooki are often associated with business and wealth, and they have a habit of turning leaves into other things (mostly money). Sound familiar?
Unlike Mr Resetti, Tom is still serving the same role in New Horizons that he’s had in all previous Animal Crossing games. He certainly has been toned down a little, so as not to be quite so intimidating.
But why have a character that obsesses over money in the first place? Well, Tom Nook serves the important purpose of giving the player something to do. A reason to dig up iron nuggets or trap spiders. He provides the game with some form of challenge, in that players work to earn money so they can pay him off.
Yes, according to the developers of Animal Crossing: New Horizons: life only has meaning because wealthy businessmen give poor people something to do with their time. Hmm…
Anyway, here’s hoping you’re staying safe and keeping out of trouble.
    Lots of love,
    BretonStripes ( / bretonstriped ) and Kotor ( / kotorcomics )

And what makes it great is that the debt _isn't actually crippling_ . It doesn't stop you from doing anything, but as you pay it off, he upgrades his shops and opens up new things to do. You can do _more_ if you pay it off, but he'll settle for waiting, too.

It's a zero interest loan that you can pay back anytime. It's only crippling if it's has high interest that compounds faster than you can payback. You're taking advantage of him by leveraging his money to own something you can't afford and he has nothing to gain by lending you that money.

This might be because I've only played Animal Crossing new Leaf and New Horizons, but I've never seen Tom Nook as a bad guy. He seems to be caring and patient, putting in all this work so his customers are happy, especially in New Horizons. Heck, he even builds and upgrades your house overnight. And when I learned his backstory and how he's teaching Timmy and Tommy so they don't make the same mistake, he became an even more caring and patient person in my eyes. Yes he has worked in many jobs that give him losts of money, but if you think about it he's probably using that money to buy resources and supplies and materials to upgrade buildings. Overall I personally think Tom Nook is a great character in the games.

Nobody seems to talk about how the villager you play as seems to think it's a good idea to either just show up to a new town or purchase a getaway package while having literally no money to their name. Tom Nook rolls with it one way or another and not only gives the player benefit of the doubt but a chance to make right. Any of his threats from the original game kind of seem justified when you put into perspective just how ridiculous it would actually be in real life to let the villager's devil-may-care behavior slide. Ultimately, I think Tom Nook just wants to see the player become a responsible, productive citizen.

Even in the first game, Tom Nook is very generous. Regarding the "goons" quote, I'm pretty sure the next thing he does is laugh and tell you he's joking. Not only that, dialog with the post office workers and the animals on your island make it clear that no one else even attempts to pay off their loans, with no negative repercussions. With that being the case, it's almost no wonder Nook is so grateful to you for paying off all your loans in that game that he builds you a gold statue for doing so.

That’s all well and good, but it doesn’t make the reading that Tom Nook is a jerk wrong. Like in real life, people who work in finance or whatever are just playing by the rules of the system capitalism has given them, but history has shown that people will try to use loop holes and tricks to get a leg up on everyone else.
Sure the system is to blame, but the users of that system aren’t blameless. It’s a bit of a scary view point to defend Tom Nook outside of the context of the game. Saying he’s the hero is... I couldn’t disagree more.

I think you're talking about a very broad problem. Some people in finance do shady things but it is illogical to say therefore all people in finance do shady things. So far playing AC New Horizons for about a week Tom Nook hasn't done anything in the game that qualifies as shady. He charges you for a service and there's nothing wrong with that. He's otherwise just hosting classes and letting people do what they want. So while people are free to interpret what they want the evidence for Tom being shady is lacking in the games text.

How do people think Tom Nook is a critique of capitalism? Because he doesn't just give you the house for free. The player doesn't care about Tom Nook's labor, or cost of materials. They feel they deserve his house, and shouldn't have to pay back. What moochers, aka socialists.

Tom Nook isn’t a greedy capitalist; he’s an aspiring communist. He expresses doubts about the profitability of the Getaway Package at the beginning of New Horizons, but still goes through with the project. He introduces Nook Miles as a new form of currency based directly from hard work with the plan to slowly replace the Bell as the island’s main currency. The only reason he charges real money for your mortgages is they have to import resources from the outside, capitalist world, but I believe his true goal is to grow the island until it is able to survive self-sustainably (possibly with the inclusion of nearby islands into his communist state), so as to achieve true communism. May we all take a moment to salute our fearless leader, Comrade Nook.

If I recall correctly, the animal crossing series does have a timeline you just have to dig in the games for it and it shows Tom really isn’t a bad guy he has character development from the first game to now and it shows that he eases up and becomes nicer as the games go on and if you truly dig around the series for it you learn that Tom doesn’t actually keep most of the money he makes, and I mean MOST of the money as 90% of his earnings are indeed donated to charity. Theres a lot more through out the series that he does to show that he’s a good guy but that would almost double the length of this post to go into so I shall let anyone who reads this to do the digging themselves.

I personally think that the reason of why he was kind of a jerk in the earlier games is because he was still trying to recover from the scam he suffered, because in his backstory he lost everything by trying to establish his business in the city, so he was probably trying to not be taken advantage of, and even with that he was still ethical and nice enough to not play any tricks or charge extra to the player, and now in the newest games he's a lot nicer to the player, probably not only because of the success of his business but most likely thanks to Timmy and Tommy too. With all of this I would say that Tom Nook is probably one of the most developed characters in AC

Tom Nook, while I will always meme on him as the Greedy Shells for Bells monger who absolutely does not care about the player, isn't anything like that at all. He's been super nice, super friendly, and oh so very generous, yes yes. The problem isn't even the player or the game, the real problem is that Tom Nook, by virtue of being the guy who gives you the game's objective, is somewhat the game's antagonist. He's not a bad guy, he doesn't do anything evil, but he creates the "conflict" of the game. People are just mad because he gives them the bill.
