Why Tom Nook is "Misunderstood" According to Animal Crossing Devs

- Tom Nook is seen by many as the villain of Animal Crossing: New Horizons. After all, he withholds information about the cost of his deserted island getaway package, he slaps the player with a large loan for his services, and then he sits back, waiting for the money to roll in.
According to Animal Crossing developers Aya Kyogoku and Hisashi Nogami, Tom Nook isn’t actually a bad guy. He’s misunderstood. If you look at things from another point of view, he’s actually the hero of the games, providing resources to those in need, giving them as much time as they want to repay him, and never asking for a penny more than he lends.
Tom Nook is a tanuki, a real life animal in Japan, but also a large part of Japanese folklore. Tanooki are often associated with business and wealth, and they have a habit of turning leaves into other things (mostly money). Sound familiar?
Unlike Mr Resetti, Tom is still serving the same role in New Horizons that he’s had in all previous Animal Crossing games. He certainly has been toned down a little, so as not to be quite so intimidating.
But why have a character that obsesses over money in the first place? Well, Tom Nook serves the important purpose of giving the player something to do. A reason to dig up iron nuggets or trap spiders. He provides the game with some form of challenge, in that players work to earn money so they can pay him off.
Yes, according to the developers of Animal Crossing: New Horizons: life only has meaning because wealthy businessmen give poor people something to do with their time. Hmm…
Anyway, here’s hoping you’re staying safe and keeping out of trouble.
Lots of love,
BretonStripes ( / bretonstriped ) and Kotor ( / kotorcomics )

Doesn’t charge interest, lets you pay whenever you want, doesn’t charge extra fees for late payments? Sounds like a pretty stand up guy to me!
Plus he throws in some stuff for free! Also, who gives you 1/10 of the price of a house for taking a picture? What a great guy!
True
I've always liked Tom since the first Animal Crossing
@@TudBoatTed you can also sell random crap for money too!
Yeah, I appreciate him more now that I'm older.
as we all know, _"it is not an animal crossing game without crippling debt"_
...i love that quote
And what makes it great is that the debt _isn't actually crippling_ . It doesn't stop you from doing anything, but as you pay it off, he upgrades his shops and opens up new things to do. You can do _more_ if you pay it off, but he'll settle for waiting, too.
Andrew Geiger And it’s not even that expensive to get a 2-story house with a basement and 3 extra rooms, less than 100k USD in new horizons, if bells really are based off of yen
It's a zero interest loan that you can pay back anytime. It's only crippling if it's has high interest that compounds faster than you can payback. You're taking advantage of him by leveraging his money to own something you can't afford and he has nothing to gain by lending you that money.
what i ask me is how much like 1000 bells are in real life payment so we can see how much it really is
@@WellPreparedTreeFrog Less than 100k? My current loan used to be about 300k and I only have two rooms
I don't know why people still consider Tom Nook the villain of the franchise when Redd is already unashamedly a snake-oil salesman that makes Nook look like an honest businessman by comparison.

People seriously need to cut Tom Nook some slack. I hope more videos like this get out there to people.
I understand why everyone portrays Tom Nook as a greedy tanuki who forces people into slavery via debt, but he's actually really generous. Mainly, he _doesn't charge interest,_ meaning he sacrifices his best option for profit. That's the opposite of a loan shark.
No interest, extremely lax about how long it takes to pay him back, and no down payment required upfront! I wish it was this easy in real life to get a home.
And 90 percent of his profit goes to orphanage
@@varianto05 I keep hearing people say that but where did we learn this? Is there some Tom Nook official backstory somewhere that I never read?

@@tadstrange1465 I see. Never played that one.
Tom Nook is better than many companies in the real-world though. He actually gives you time to pay off debt rather than order you to pay off quickly.
No deadline either
I never heard or played animal crossing but hearing tom nook just being nice, helping you build, get to ur island safe and sound, telling you to help others, pay ur debt anytime, making u name ur island, and overall give u supplies for the island.
He is a good guy, he shows u around the island, he tries to teach you what is good and what is bad (ie: wearing home clothes instead of office clothes)
Give u the opportunity to pay off the debts by making a new currency, and the easy way to get them by just an app.
He's sad he's trying to make u, the player and others happy as much and he can, to his limits.

But yeah, great guy, that Tom Nook.
he had a bit of early installment weirdness with his sense of humor, but the developers figured out the RANGE of the target demographic fairly quickly. it is hard to make a game appeal to such a wide audience, and the developers failed to realize that the game would appeal to a young audience. also humor is one of the hardest things to get right in translation, it might be something that got taken literally by the translators when it was a obviously joke in japanise.

He's/She's Right!
Once you know his backstory he's one of the most sympathetic characters in the game. He actually started off working with Redd, who tricked him out of all of his money. He vowed to never let anyone be in the situation he once was in. That's why he makes the houses as cheap as possible and lets you pay at your own pace. And the reason he took Timmy and Tommy under his wing was because they reminded him of himself. He wants to make money, but he also wants everyone to benefit.

All jokes aside, I really like Tom Nook’s character. I feel like the role of an ambitious (not a bad trait!) business man is VERY well portrayed in him, and it really fits him too. An Animal Crossing game without Tom Nook wouldn’t feel like Animal Crossing - I would really miss having a tanuki/raccoon giving me loans to upgrade my house, LOL.
Without Tom Nook this game would just be island survival, with no way to purchase goods or services. Honestly people wouldn't like it nearly as much, because you'd have no clear goals.

It's weird that people call Tom Nook a villain and he is in actually a villain he's actually a good guy what the weirdest thing do people even remember Crazy Redd in wild world literally the dude sells counterfeit stuff in an extremely high price if you don't buy any of his stuff he will say thank you sarcastically if you didn't buy anything as a shop and the dude is literally in the black market I have no idea why people are saying Tom is a villain but redd is just he is the True Villain
Apparently Tom got scammed by a fox earlier in his life. People believe Redd is the one who did it but it not sure.
Serena Mall it was Redd.
Tom Nook is quick to clarify that he is only joking after that quote where he says he'll send goons after you if you don't pay your debt. So that quote from the first game is very poorly framed... You're taking his words out of context. =p
All memes aside, Tom Nook isn't greedy at all, he asks for money because HE built YOU a house, it's only fair, things cost money
Pretty sure that in New Horizon he ordered the parts needs to build your house too, otherwise he probably would of asked for a few materials
Then he makes you build three homes because he stuffs up communicating with other prospective villagers and thinks giving you some fencing is enough to repay you. I underatand it's really the game making you and if this was in real life, my character would have the option to say no and able to progress with life on the island without building someone else's home, I'm still going to blame him for that.
Jokes aside, I didn't like him in Wild World, but I respect his business acumen and appreciate him as a character in Wild World (and would not have liked it if he didn't debut in any other installments after Wild World). I like him now that I found out about his life story years later.
Nobody seems to talk about how the villager you play as seems to think it's a good idea to either just show up to a new town or purchase a getaway package while having literally no money to their name. Tom Nook rolls with it one way or another and not only gives the player benefit of the doubt but a chance to make right. Any of his threats from the original game kind of seem justified when you put into perspective just how ridiculous it would actually be in real life to let the villager's devil-may-care behavior slide. Ultimately, I think Tom Nook just wants to see the player become a responsible, productive citizen.
Tom Nook feels like a nice presence in New Horizons. He’s encouraging without being overbearing, he helps me with things like the DIY projects and never charges interest when it came to my home loan. He also never scared kids like Resetti did. I overall had begun to appreciate his presence since New Leaf.
Maybe the real money-absorbed tanookie was the friends we made along the way.
Tom Nook represents a bit of a fear I've always had. I always worry that whatever I create will be horribly misunderstood. So it's nice to see that someone tries to understand intent.
I'd be more inclined to believe Tom was just doing generous business if those "house upgrades" weren't forced upon me back in the Gamecube days.

Even in the first game, Tom Nook is very generous. Regarding the "goons" quote, I'm pretty sure the next thing he does is laugh and tell you he's joking. Not only that, dialog with the post office workers and the animals on your island make it clear that no one else even attempts to pay off their loans, with no negative repercussions. With that being the case, it's almost no wonder Nook is so grateful to you for paying off all your loans in that game that he builds you a gold statue for doing so.
The debt: No interest. No time limit. Literally not even a requirement to pay, just a VERY strong suggestion.
The internet: He's as bad as Sephiroth in my eyes.
But there is still one last question. Where did he get all these islands?
idk, probably just found them
Most likely this: Many Islands were abandoned due to some stuff happening, and when Tom Nook realized what he could do with the Islands, he decides to take matters into his own hands and make them into places people would want to live in again.
TheJWittz covered his backstory and why he's a good character in a story type of way.

I knew it Tom your my favorite animal crossing character
you ask him for loans no dead line to pay those loans no interest and 90% of the money goes to a child orphanage, and that all while he failed as a younger Nook... He doesnt deserve the hate :(
This neatly sums up how I've seen Nook throughout my life. When I was young I hated him since he kept offering upgrades on loan with no down payment or collateral while still urging me to pay off the current loan for the next upgrade. Now I consider him one of the nicest, most patient creditors in existence, and I'm thankful he gave me the opportunity to learn the importance of paying what you owe to others promptly in a risk-free context.
Tom Nook is my favourite character and I don't understand why people dislike him.
I never played Animal Crossing, so I thought it was true when everyone called him greedy. Jacksepticeye kept calling him a loan shark too. Then some fans tweeted about how he’s a really generous guy and I was confused. This video is my entire reaction to the whole thing.
Jack has said he hasn't played Animal Crossing before and even though I like Jack the Tom Nook is evil schtic is getting old its beating a dead horse at this point

I remember in the Animal Crossing Movie, Tom Nook's origins see him peddling his small wagon looking for second-hand stuff just to get by. Over the course of the movie, his efforts paid off from his own hard work and dedication as he sets up Nook's Corner
I love Tom Nook! He deserves better

I finally found that out that he’s kind and not greedy because someone told him a sad backstory and I felt bad.
i’m constantly making jokes about how he’s satan and your island is hell, but i seriously love this guy.
i mean he builds you a whole house overnight, he doesn’t force you to pay off your debt afterwards, he doesn’t charge you rent, and he’s helping his nephews start a business. pretty amazing.
He’s no villain. He takes care of his... nephews?.. Tommy and Timmy, helps them start a store and keep up the family business, builds you a house in one night with no down payment, never pressures you to pay debt, and has no debt interest whatsoever. Also in New Horizons he doesn’t upgrade a damn thing until you ask for it. My boy Nook is a saint
I've always just LOVED Tom Nook. He gives you a home for practically NOTHING when you had no plans when you got to where you are. As Gajin Goomba puts itlike in Japanese folklore, a tanuki would willingly give a person a large sum of money. There was no pressure, not payment plans, no bill collectors just no more until you pay it off. That sounds PRETTY generous, if you ask me. Tricksters, yes, but WAY better than kitsune.
Also (forgive me if someone else already commented this), he canonically donates most of his money to an orphanage, which even has a wing named after him. I love my boi Tom :')
I agree, I don't find Tom Nook evil at all, I feel that he's just doing his job, if we want our house to be upgraded then we need to pay in order to get it done

this quote is missing some very important context, that being that he tells you that he's just joking basically immediately after he says that.
If I recall correctly, the animal crossing series does have a timeline you just have to dig in the games for it and it shows Tom really isn’t a bad guy he has character development from the first game to now and it shows that he eases up and becomes nicer as the games go on and if you truly dig around the series for it you learn that Tom doesn’t actually keep most of the money he makes, and I mean MOST of the money as 90% of his earnings are indeed donated to charity. Theres a lot more through out the series that he does to show that he’s a good guy but that would almost double the length of this post to go into so I shall let anyone who reads this to do the digging themselves.
The problem with Tom Nook is that he gives you what you want first, and then has the audacity to expect payment. If he forced you to cough up the bells BEFORE building your house, no one would have a problem with him.
How do people think Tom Nook is a critique of capitalism? Because he doesn't just give you the house for free. The player doesn't care about Tom Nook's labor, or cost of materials. They feel they deserve his house, and shouldn't have to pay back. What moochers, aka socialists.
The real villain in Animal Crossing is Redd
I don’t know why people think Tom Nook is evil. He gives you an infinite amount of time to pay your rent, he charges you for a good cause, so he can help build your house, and he actually donates like 90% of his earnings to orphanages. Plus this poor guy has been through a lot, including failing to live a good life in the city. Give him some love.
I personally think that the reason of why he was kind of a jerk in the earlier games is because he was still trying to recover from the scam he suffered, because in his backstory he lost everything by trying to establish his business in the city, so he was probably trying to not be taken advantage of, and even with that he was still ethical and nice enough to not play any tricks or charge extra to the player, and now in the newest games he's a lot nicer to the player, probably not only because of the success of his business but most likely thanks to Timmy and Tommy too. With all of this I would say that Tom Nook is probably one of the most developed characters in AC
2:50, I feel this is taken out of context slightly, as he tells you hes joking afterwards, love the video otherwise, Tom Nook is my fav
Tom Nook builds you a house, gives you a loan with no interest which allows you to have a pretty cushy life. His only major flaw is he tends to be pushy, but only because he seems to genuinely care. I like to think that since the gamecube era, he has softened and gone through personal growth over the years.
Look up The Green Scorpion's list of the Top Ten Video Game Shopkeepers. Tom Nook is number two on that list.

He was a poor man, sleeping on his store when you try to break in into his cranny meaning he has no proper house to stay on, He donated 90% of his earnings to orphanages across 3 towns, builds you a house for 1 day without any Interests, Buys your town in case you don't want it so someone could take care of it.
He's not a Villain
He's the *_HERO_*
I never understood why people called Nook a villain. Do they just assume every video game needs a villain and he's the closest thing to one?
Of course my first AC game was City Folk. Sounds like he was a bit more intimidating before that.
Tom Nook is just trying to do good business. You can pay back loans at your own pace and he won’t even be mad! He made the liberty of building you a house in a single day with no interest. Call Tom Nook whatever you want but he is a modest businessman and I would gladly lay down my life for this precious Chonky tanuki
When I first played animal crossing when I was 6 I declined bells when I tried to sell fruits and stuff because I thought they meant the bells that ring and stuff-
Wait hold on a sec! When Tom Nook said stuff in the earlier games, like I’m going to feed you to the raccoon goons, it’s a joke. He LITERALLY laughs afterwords. I am not kidding.
That’s just his personality in the first games!
Also I think it’s should be kept in mind that he lives in his one room shack-oops I mean shop due to financial issues. The the original game after the shop closes, you can bang on it with a shovel and wake him up.
That’s is incredibly depressing that he can’t even afford a house I mean what the heck!
And we know due to wild world and happy home designer that he got tricked by Redd, who stole all his money, and that’s why he returned home in the GameCube version with nothing, dreams crushed.
Do your research people! There’s more!
I used to misunderstand nook, but now I actually like him ,all players needs to realize what he does for everyone(u, his nephews, etc)

1:37 no they put that there because in folklore they can become people and buy stuff with money and after they leave the money turns into paper or leafs so they put a statue to see that one ha already been there
Tom Nook: I'm just an npc...
Does anyone know if Redd is in the game? I never saw him in new leaf. I have feeling he's in jail by now.
jacksepticeye and other youtubers playing animal crossing new horizons need to see this
Honestly, some people have incredibly unrealistic opinions when playing Animal Crossing games. Oh no, Tom Nook uses capitalism, he must be evil! Nevermind that he gave me a house just for living my life, or how I can sell him literally anything and make a profit on it. He's the most patient understanding businessman in existence, so good that he couldn't exist in the real world.
I mean it IS a game.... not sure why it really matters in the end whether people view him as a villain or not. *shrugs* I'm mostly indifferent to Nook. I appreciate the house and everything but he does come off as pushy sometimes.
There are no bad guys in Animal Crossing except maybe the Sea Bass.
When you grow up and understand more about life, you understand how much of a good guy Tom Nook is.
Go have a guy build you a house and charge you 0% intrest for a loan. Essentially paying off your loans at your own pace, no quest asked. Hes a saint.
But he does charge me 10k just for destroying a bridge he forced me to make in the first place, so he is pure evil.

My first impression of Tom Nook is that he's a humble business man, ofcourse he needed the money cuz that's his business, but what's good with him is that he's patient and understanding to us the player that owes him money,as long as you pay him even any amounts,he's fine with it
I like how the Devs made a character that is not falling to the stereotype of an evil business man, respect for the Devs and to Tom Nook(that's why he's my fave Animal crossing character)
The real villain of animal crossing isn’t Tom, or capitalism. It’s redd, he stole all of Tom’s money when he was low in life, continually follows Tom to new towns to try and steal businesses, gives you fake art literally no one wants, and is an al around awful person by breaking the law by coming onto toms private property without his consent. Also he aided in alienating Tom and sable who make the cutest couple so that alone makes him worse than meta Ridley
