- Jerry Donahue's great skill shown here as he plays his own composition into Jerry Reed's classic! From the 94/95 Ohne Filter appearance. Got the aspect ratio a bit better here! Enjoy!

"There's a thousand guitar players in Nashville. Thank God they never leave or I'd be out of a job." ~ Jeff Beck
Central Scrutinizer how is that sad and cool at the same time?
I'm hear'n Beck again...
It's like those licks and bends are made for the Telecaster, the way the neck feels, and that twang! Nothing quite like a Telecaster!!
I hope someone has pointed out that "The Claw" is a composition by the late/great Jerry Reed. Certainly not to take away from Donahue's mastery.
...
If you think that this is 'kindergarten music' then you should be even more in awe of the fact that the Hellecasters managed to mix 'kindergarten music' with Gypsy Jazz, 60's & 70's Rock 'n' Roll and all the other styles that they're so well known for effortlessly combining.
No b-bender there...he's just a string strangler! Awesome! Check out the tutorial of this where he describes the "behind the nut" technique.
Had the honour of Jerry joining my band on stage on Sunday night, his solo blew me away! x
Makes it look so effortless ! Excellent .
Amazing
this is a real guitar work! expression, felling and technique, everything together men!
Hang in there Jerry. We love ya'
i got the chance to see these guys live in dallas and they kicked nine kinds of ass! each one of them is great at their own thing. awesome!!!!
Played drums with Jerry a few times many years ago in 'The Spurs' pub in London. He was already good then and just gets better and better !!!
Really great video. Thanks for putting it on for all to see. Guitar players at their best......
just pure genius, i am at the beggining of my chicken pickin development, this almost scaries me, grettings from baires, argentina
I saw them in Norway for many years ago. I did not know them before the concert.
After the concert, I bought the CD's... :D
this is just perfect! master playing at its best.. wow! thats all that needs to be said!
Great Video! I saw these guys at the Montreal jazz festival a few years back and my jaw is still on the ground there.
Please! post more if you have them.
wow wow and wow great one - thanks for the clip
Oh my Gosh. I just witnessed three angels who wants my teles I give up.
No doubt about that. He is, as I said, my favorite of the three, and they are all three among my top ten favorite guitarists, so...
that is some wild bending
MASTER OF THE TELECASTER!
Un animal Donahue.
DIRTY. Love these guys
SIMPLY DAMN AMAZING!!!!!!!!!
holy crap!!! hes so awesome!
fantastic ! and the great Alan Thomson from Scotland on bass!
Brilliant!
Simply...
Wow!!!!!
charming, ryreinhardt...
What a great performance of a great song, someone gave me a videotape of the Ohne Filter performance (this one, i.e. before live...raw...) and it cuts out half way through this song :(
Great to see more and more videos of probably the best instrumental guitar band/music ever on RUclips, guys, upload it!!
I saw him last year together with Thomas Blug, Thijs van Leer and Raul Walton...!!!!!
Goddam!
Damn! Them's the best parts of a buzzard!
I can't believe how effortlessly these guys play! So jealous. Tele's are greased lightning. And never sound like this when I play one. (I need more bite, and play Gibson's)
You should try a compresor pedal and get a slap back delay going I recently got a new compresor and it made my tele sound so much better tc electronics makes one for 40$ and it’s fantastic
You have to be relaxed when playing this style.
Anyone else think Will Ray looks like Billy Connolly, if he grew up in Vegas?
they play Hella Loud live.
Will Ray , JD and JJ are sickness defined with that twang
hi will ray if your readin this crap lol! thanks for the session tapes with the riffs you rock man!
As Roy Buchanan's little brother. Great!!! Or was it old James Burton himself??? Great!!! I love Roy Burton or James Buchanan guitar stile. Juleskroon from Switzerland.
Ok, some of the technic from Brent Mason and a liitle bit of Albert Lee is also present. A good mix from them all! One of the very best songs of my "Good Father of Guitar" Chet Atkins and his best friend "The guitar Man" Jerry Reed!! The bests what it is! Now played by Jerry Donahue. Jules from Switzerland.
damn i dont country music but i do apreciate good guitarists!
These guys are true A listers.
Check out Escape From Hollywood and the eponymous album. Major Troutage, Inspector Gadget, Back on Terra Firma, Axe to Grind, Lost in Kashmir, Hanging Out at Tom & Rita's... etc... etc... list goes on. In my opinion the lack of vocals limits their audience. I call it music for musicians.
Jerry is now using thumbpicks. He has such a gentle touch.
eles tocam muito mesmo, coutryzão dos bão!!
He uses mostly finger bends and "behind the nut" bending where you press the string right near the tuner to make it go up in pitch.
God Jerry, this was so good it made me laugh! Give me a call and let's catch up.
How are the Paxtons?
Miss working with you,
Shannon
2:05 funky!
Blistering! Virtuos!
Right On - Jerry's talent makes all the difference...most guitarists can get up speed (you tube has some fast guitars) musicians & singers can be exceptional technicians but that's NOT what music is about...the gift (talent) is what makes the difference
Johnny Hiland should record with these guys !
Whoa - what country are they from? That guy is amazing - I can't believe I never heard of him before.
does anyone have "valley of the pharaohs" posted? I would love to see them playing that..
6 months on...less scarey now?
Rikk from England...greetings x
You have the official release which was recorded on Ohne Filter in 1998! This is better in my opinion!
I really hope his health improves. Get better soon
yep and other things
Amazing work but there was only one Tele Master and he was The Humler.
a touch of johnny be good
@MitchTenderness . Try Brent Mason, Albert Lee or Johnny Hiland.. All great players in their own right...not exactly 'strictly instrumental' but awesome exponents of contemporary country picking. There are many many more out there you just don't get to hear of....
have you seen the john jorgenson quintet? makes this sound like kindergarten music
g string was catching on the nut
can someone please tell me of any other instrumental "stunt country" groups or people like this. strictly instrumental.
He was known for playing a b-bender tele for years...
yea back in the day before keith urban was known,he played awesome then....
I think Jerry has played the guitar before, call it a hunch.
do you play gtr?
Yes I have indeed - John is a very different player to Jerry, and if you prefer Gypsy Jazz & Swing to out-and-out Nashville then indeed you'd prefer the JJ Quintet, however, just because you prefer one thing it doesn't neccessarily mean that you need to hate another...
Well I think the lesson here is - it's not bad just because you don't like it!
I just watched Tony Rice - he has a very nice style but I've always preferred Brent Mason/Hellecasters-type electric country pickers myself. I guess that's why I listen to Jerry Donahue more than Jerry Reed! Although JR is great!
I'm afraid you need your ears checked... Thats playing off the cuff... Simply excellent...
It's all Jerrys' fault I got into this guitar thing in the 1st place years ago. Have you heard Fotheringay G&T, or have I asked you that already? The Sea is the track and it's Jerry in a more mellow mood..not playing riffs that would have lesser mortals fingers in knots I mean.Good music anyone should check out..Sandy Denny...what can I say?
John Jorgenson is a great guitarist. No doubt! But all of the Hellecasters are amazing and one of the things that made the band a lot of fun was their differing talents. John is a fast single-line picker for the most part, while Jerry's genius lies in multi-string lines and incredible bending technique. Danny Gatton praised Donahue as "the string-bending king of the planet." I prefer his playing to John's, but that's just my taste. They are both great... as is Will Ray.
Sounds like you are....!
bending strings - the fall back position when you run out of ideas
What a joke !
Did Jerry ever played that to Mr. Reed and if so, is his jaw fixed yet?
Albert Lee plays circles round those Hellshitters!
John 's work in The Price I Pay on Desert Rose is superior to any of this
JD is a great player, and his version of this on the "Telecasting" album is superb - but I would agree that this version is not of the best, off the cuff or not. He loses pace here and there - too fast indeed.
Too Fast , Jerry Was funky , this is showboating. But still cool.
Love the Hellcasters. Jerry is awesome. But.. his sound and technique in this particular video, especially during the actual Claw part left some to be desired. The distortion just doesn't work. But, he's an awesome player.
Playing is only part of it - it's material also and that peice could have had some counterpoint some harmony guitar instead of just rythym and a lead guitar
All three Hellecasters are equally great in their own right. Jerry Donahue has always been my favorite in terms of tone, style, technique, etc.
I have to say, though, I DO NOT like his tone here at all. It isn't the Jerry Donahue I know and love. I'm thinking he must have been experimenting with something different in terms of gear and/or settings here. Will Ray's performance of Sweet Dreams on this show is the standout in my opinion. His tone and overall performance were BETTER than the CD.
john is a vastly superior player to Jerry (never heard of him)and has much better taste and style
They play it way too fast - misses some notes and it sounds quirky. Donahue is an excellent guitarist, but this was way below what should be expected from such a great guitarist.
just checked out tony rice - another boring country picker - he's not jerry reeds toenail or chet's nose hair
I don't really understand all these overwhelmingly positive comments... I think this song doesn't work at all. Jerry's guitar is out of tune and most of the bendings are even worse. Also it sounds like he's struggling just to keep up with the tempo... Good ideas executed only half way...
Trainbuff is delusional beyond belief! Reed sure can pick - but is not even close to this league. Jerry himself would have to admit this. The only meandering nonsense here is your meandering nonsense....
as a composition it's still a peice of cliched nashville rubbish
