I was wondering how long it would take metalheads to realize what's new to the great Steve Vai has been commonplace among country guitarists doing faux pedal steel bends on the guitar. Though with Jerry it's more than a few licks they toss off here and there. BTW, sometimes a little whammy bar (or a Bigsby vibrato) can help with those kind of tricks. To twist a phrase, everything that's new is old again.
@@nosuchperson284 actually people who listen to Steve Vai are not Metalheads because Steve play mostly instrumental stuff which you can't just call metal.

@ric66fb 0 seconds ago I'm really lucky in as much as I've known Jerry since we first met in the mid to late 60s back in the UK. I had the priviledge of playing drums with him on a regular basis back then and we'd have the odd drink together. He's a very humble guy and not given to go off on ego trips, which is incredible given his huge talent. I don't know if you are aware of this but sadly he had a stroke a couple of years back . This has resulted in him not being able to play since, and doctors think he may never be able to pick up the guitar again ... a huge talent which may be gone forever.
Jerry is such a beast. The perfection in his bending is ridiculous. Been a fan since the first time I heard the Hellecasters as a young guitarist and the older I get the higher the respect I gain for his skill. Randomly stumbled on this video and loved it
Man you cut the best part! A second later at the end, he gives this charming little smile that is so humble! I remember that moment from all those years ago when this was shown on the BBC
@@Ralph2info only - I remember it like it was yesterday (also had Frank Dunnery from 'It Bites' playing a Squier). The documentary was called 'Twang Bang Kerrang'.
Pretty amazing. He pulls & pushes strings at the same time but it's hard to know what he is doing as there seems to be more notes coming out than he is playing, especially high ones. I'll figure it out later. It's a great lesson in that style
No I don't think he was, there was Andy Summers from The Police, Francis Dunnery from It Bites, another guy called Jerry ?? who had inspired Jerry Donahue, and some young coloured kid in his flat who played Shadows tunes. I had it on a VHS tape for years, I used to watch it often back then, especially the JD parts.
@@Coppertunes Thanks for the reply! My brain must be mashing up two separate documentaries. I remember a similar sort of video, but with someone doing two different bends in opposite directions on the fretboard, while playing other stuff. And my brain remembers it as Holdsworth. But that could entirely be a false memory, as it's very similar to this. But not exact in my head.

@@Jef-sj6zc Dude stfu, don't compare guitarists.
This is one of the most inspirational pieces of footage that I have ever seen !
I love how calm and, still his face is, while he casually lays down a nearly impossible piece of guitar work. To me, that’s about as cool as it gets.
That man make me cry with his country licks
I'm picturing sitting in on jam night and right before my turn to solo, Jerry plays like this.
I could cover the rhythm maybe

Wow absolutely beautiful!! Love it
Incredible guitar 🎸 playing
I saw this on PBS before Jerry started the Hellecasters. Instant fan. What a monster.
So peaceful. I feel peace better than in various churches
