I am a Hard Rock fan and player but you can never appreciate two great guitarists like Jerry Reed and Roy Clark enough. I miss both those guys, Legends of music.
Don't forget Glen Campbell. Probably even a better player than Roy Clark, but at that level, it's like comparing EVH, Hendrix, Page, Clapton, etc., etc. etc.
Nobody in Nashville played exactly like Jerry. He had his own licks that were not part of the mainstream signature sound. Jerry was chickin pickin and burnin up the double stops with his classic Amos Moses guitar tone long before that style of playing was popular. What a great talent and very humble man. This guy is legit one of the greatest guitar players of all time and had such little ego he didn’t feel the need to show it off, he was more concerned with being funny and doing funny novelty songs. He’s best known for the theme to smoky and the bandit and that’s so crazy to me. The guy was every bit as good as Chet Atkins.

WOW! Absolutely priceless! Most of us never saw Jerry in a private setting like this just being himself. This one is worth it's weight in gold. Would love to see more! One of the absolute greatest to ever pick up a guitar. He's still inspiring pickers today. If Jerry Reed doesn't wind your creative clock you must be a half deaf piccolo player!
Jerry Reed is a true guitar hero, He gave songs to Glenn, Chet and many others. He was just enjoying him self while, making jokes and playing godly guitar swamp licks at the most advanced level.
I love Jerry's whole demeanor. He reminds me of my older brother Bill who's a fishing guide off of Vancouver Island.Bill has a homestead on one of the smaller islands with his wife where they raised two boys. When I make it over there Bill picks up his guitar or mandolin and will wander around the yard lost in his own world picking away. Occasionally he'll stop and have a pinch of chewing tobacco like Jerry.Anyway it's a comfort knowing that there are still real people on the planet ya know?
Me again, yes I am still watching this video. Please don't take it away, It is Jerry as I choose to remember him. Always been my hero, and always will be. God Bless Jerry Reed!
I just discovered this. For a student of fingerstyle, it is a treasure. "The Claw" is one of the defining pieces of the style, and to see and hear the creator himself playing it and discussing it is invaluable. Jerry's remark about sounding "definitive" is key. Although he's rusty and years past his prime, you can hear that definitive crispness (and you see how he really does favor the 2nd and 3rd fingers on the right hand). "The Claw" was never supposed to be about speed. It is not a sprint. It's a dance, and when Jerry plays it it sounds and feels faster than it really is.
Towards the end, his health hit him on all sides. He had emphysema, and a tremor in one of his hands (I think the right one). He raised his price kinda high on purpose, he only wanted the shows that really wanted him. One of my friends managed him during that phase of his career.
Rusty and past his prime..........Son, you better be one hell of a picker to be judging Jerry Reed!! I'm pretty sure that Brent Mason, Pat Berguson, Richard Smith, Thom Bresh, Tommy Emmanuel etc,...etc,... respect Ole' Jerry enough to not be judging Jerry, full stop! Hush your mouth, Son, 'nuff said!
Simo' James My friend, I'm sorry if you think he's in his prime here, but I beg to differ (and I'll wager any one of those heavyweights would agree with me). At any rate, the legacy of Jerry Reed lies in the licks, those flashes of lightning that expanded enlarged the repertoire of guitar music; arguably creating "fingerstyle" itself. I think that for a while Jerry may have disdained those gems he invented, but towards the latter part of his life I think he saw that his guitar innovations would long outlive "Smokey & The Bandit." Credit also goes to John Knowles for having the wisdom to write this stuff out (and provide some genius arrangements of his own). Best, JD
Well Sir, I do agree with you that Jerry at this stage was certainly not at the peek of his playing, but I wouldn't agree that he 'created' fingerstyle! Even the style he's best known for can be easily traced back to Chet, Merle Travis and even Mose Rager before that, and thats not even taking into consideration, the Delta blues stylists, the Piedmont pickers, the bluegrass guys, Doc Watson et al,..., but I take your point never the less, that Jerry wasn't at his best later in life, but still the charisma is more than enough...that Ole' Boy forgot more than we'll ever remember when it comes to picking! I own over 40 of Jerry's albums and soundtracks (albeit some are a bit 'dodgy' in origin...haha), but lets just say, Son, when your as hot as Jerry, your hot as hell, Son! Full kudos to John Knowles, Craig Dobbins, Tommy Emmanuel and all those boys that are still payin' it forward!! Peace
Simo' James Chet , Merle and Jerry all had their own styles. They didn't sound anything alike. As far as using the fingers and thumb, there were black pickers back in the '20' and 30's doing that.
My stage manager and I had comedown time before we played at a bar that night and were walking the streets of Nashville about 15 years ago and Jerry was coming out of one of the bars, broad daylight, and Scott punches me in the chest and exclaims "That's Jerry Reed!" and smooth as can be Jerry slips his sunglasses down to the tip of his nose and looks eye to eye with us and says "what's left of him son" and pushed his shades back up and was gone before we could fully grasp hold of what just happened.
Got dang that’s a great story. Just recently moved away from Nashville and it’s hard to explain to folks how likely and common it is to interact with legends. Thanks for sharing.

Jerry Reed was a freak of nature and I mean this in the very best way. His talent was freakishly natural and raw -- he was truly a master player. Even the greats like Eric Johnson are humbled by his playing -- EJ's 'Tribute to Jerry Reed' is proof of this. He has been a major influence on countless players, and yet it's a shame that many are unfamiliar with his work. The problem is that many dismiss him as too "corny" or other such nonsense. It's a shame they can't be bothered to turn off the Kardashians and turn down their electronic dance music -- which is perfectly in key and perfectly temporally quantized --and give Jerry's pickin' a chance to blow their narrow minds. Their loss. Long live Jerry's sounds!

The You Tube algorythms blessed me with this video... probably cause I jammed "East Bound and Down" in my truck while running with my youngest daughter on 64 heading East delivering mail on Christmas Eve.
What a joy this much have been, Jerry Reed sitting in your house? Other than winning a 100 million dollar lotto, I don't see how it could get any better than this.
Absolute phenomenon, as said Tommy Emmanuel !! He was great guitarist and very funny man who wrote so beautiful tunes!! We miss you Mr. Jerry Reed. Thanks for upload!! Great material!
I heard that Jerry Reed said to be good you had to play 8 -10 hours a day. He said he would play for hours, fall asleep with guitar in hand , wake up and keep playing !
***** That's funny and brings back memories of low rent places and cheap guitars... my first song learned was Unloved,Unwanted by Ray Price. I sang it so much I got tired of it and crying and started writing myself. Good post thanks !
Today this came across my suggestion feeds and I was blown away with a big smile on my face. I cannot believe I got to see this video today. Jerry Reed has always been one of my heroes. I don't play the guitar but my dad did professionally I play drums. I remember when I was a little boy probably 15 years old I so bad wanted to drive tractor trailers when I got older and I will listen to country music and relate to it. there was an old man that lived upstairs from us and he would come home every night with his little briefcase and he was a tractor-trailer driver his name was Tom. He would always stop down stairs and give me something that had to do with either country music or trucks and he gave me this cassette tape of Jerry Reed titled the man with the golden thumb. I wore that cassette out and was never able to find it again until the internet opened up and I was able to find that music. 51 years old now and driving tractor trailers for 30 years and every day I listen to all of Jerry's music. I never got to meet that man or go to any of his concerts but he is just my idol. Someday in the distant future by the grace of God I'm going to get to sit down and have a drink with that man. RIP Mr Reed

Jerry had a love of the nylon acoustic ....Before he went over with Chet ... he worked on a session on my Moms , Sister and aunts records at the Columbia studio in Nashville , along with his fellow muscians were Ray Stevens and Gerry Kennedy .. That was a long time ago (1963or 4 )
Jerry Reed and JJ Cale are two of the most underrated guitarists of all time. I love them both for their originality and down to earth good nature. RIP both .
Dak TirQue jerry was great in everything. JJ Cale was a great guitarist and songwriter but he never seemed like he put any emotion into his singing. Listening to him sing and it sounds like he’s bored or tired of singing the song.
The great bluegrass flatpicker Tony Rice speaks reverentially of Jerry Reed, whose style was a seemingly effortless mix of country, blues, rockabilly and jazz. A true master of the instrument - goodness, the man had talent. One cant blame him for chasing a few bucks with his film career as well.
Jerry left a great catalogue of unique music for guitar that will live on forever! Will be a long time before a talent such as this will come along to re inspire us all as Jerry Reed Hubbard did. God Bless you!
what superb technique. his sense of counterpoint was amazing and he never played a note by itself. (that's a really good exercise to practice as a guitarist btw). that's what hard work and practice does: starting at a young age doesn't hurt either haha. man, those groovy-ass doublestops! this video is a treasure
I think by now most people have forgotten about smokey and the bandit and he is really remembered and revered by musicians who understand his talent, as it should be, although those movies were lots of fun too. But most movie fans don't quite realize that as a guitar player he was a giant. Not just a famous hot player, like say Glen Campbell, but a real innovator who influenced thousands of players.
I listen to Jerry often. Love his music.

One of the greatest guitarists in the world... T_T
I doubt the people that gave this a thumbs down realise this man invented and wrote most of the licks he’s playing that became huge hits for himself and other world famous artists
One doesn't appreciate good Music until it is gone! One of the all time Great Pickers of our time, This Nashville Cat always had to prove himself & played a 2nd Fiddle to Chet Atkins all those years, I truly believe that he was Best & most Multi talented from the Great Volunteer State, You are solely missed Jerry & Chet
Oh my goodness! I've never seen Jerry Reed so old. Makes me sad to see him age . But he could still bring it!, Miss ya Jerry. What an incredible talent.
Jerry is one of my guitar heros! This makes me want to play it again ! I've played a ton of solos but the Claw is truly one of the tastiest chicken-picken I've ever heard! I really miss Jerry not being alive n being on tv! To this day I don't think there was a better country musical < rapper! What an entertainer!!!!
Thanks so much for this .Yes we miss him every day .It's very special .
One of my all time favorites..... from.the first time i heard him pick and then say "son".....i was hooked.....

I can’t say enough good things about this American legend...
🙏💪🇺🇸💪🙏
Goddamnit when I hear Reed play, I want to JUMP for JOY over that man and his magnificent guitar playing. He defines the very word.
Great comment!
Probably the best guitarist ever. He was just way way ahead of all the so called greatest rock guitarists.
What a crazy guy. We miss you Jerry. God bless.. a real talented player.
LEARNIN' FROM THE SAUCE , THE JUICE, THE CREATOR HIMSELF !! That's beyond great
I'm proud to say I met him once and got a picture with him; great humor and great guitar original.
The You Tube algorythms blessed me with this video... probably cause I jammed "East Bound and Down" in my truck while running with my youngest daughter on 64 heading East delivering mail on Christmas Eve.
Good vid man...I really miss this guy..He was one great picker..
Chet Atkins was the same way, and He and Jerry were great friends...
Mark Knopfler says a similar thing in a video here on RUclips. You need to fall asleep playing.
You've done a service for all mankind, Thom. Thank you.. and thank Jerry.
He was something that you will struggle to find in today's music....Original..
Fantastic video , I remember hearing this tune for the first time. I think it changed the way guitar was being played at the time. A true original.
Sure enjoyed this. Always awesome to see a master just noodle and come up with some phenomenal stuff!
RIP Mr Reed
I love Jerry Reed..it's so great to still see him at the top of his game...
Nobody could pick like Jerry. He was so good and never got the recognition he deserved. What a master of the guitar.
Snowman you got your ears on??? I l Love this Man!! I hope he influenced a whole ton of guitar players! Jerry rocks on forever!!!!
I cried when he died. RIP Jerry.
Good Ol' Jerry Reed. A true classic and I really love his music. It's a shame that the greats have to die.
R.I.P.
Happy Father's Day Jerry! You are remembered and missed.
The Best.....Jerry Reed.
Greetings from Germany Peter 😊
I'm 45 years of age started playing 15 years ago now trying Jerry's picking . These videos are Gold .
What a great player.
R.I.P Jerry....we miss you.
laserbeam 002 I MEET JERRY REED IN 1998 HIS CONCERT WAS AWESOME.I MEET JERRY REED BACK STAGE WITH HIS BAND N HIS LOVING WIFE PRISCILLA REED. EVERYONE CALEED JERRY REED MR. GUITAR MAN.RIP. JERRY REED.I HAVE 10 CD,S OF JERRY REED,S MUSIC.
I got to meet him a few times right at the end of his life.He was a sweet man and from what I could tell...an awesome grandpa!
Whoever posted this THANK YOU! Dude was one of a kind.
Beautiful man.
Thank you so much
He’s been my favorite guitarist for years.
I could literally spend a whole weekend just watchin' clips of Jerry playing the guitar. Thank you Bresh for puttin' forth this nugget!
Love ❤️ you Jerry for all the serious work you gave to us 🇺🇸 miss you man
The great bluegrass flatpicker Tony Rice speaks reverentially of Jerry Reed, whose style was a seemingly effortless mix of country, blues, rockabilly and jazz. A true master of the instrument - goodness, the man had talent. One cant blame him for chasing a few bucks with his film career as well.
words fail to express our gratitude for making this priceless vid and posting it for us all.
Thanks!
What a treasure this video is! Thank you for posting this...Jerry Reed! A National Treasure, God Bless him, May he rest in peace!
Thanks Tom that was incredible.Dam son! Right from the master, there it is.I've been playin' it wrong for 25 yrs!!
AWESOME VIDEO. Jerry has always been my favorite guitar picker !!👍👍
What an awesome riff, son! Miss Jerry and his music...they broke the mold!
This upload is pure gold. Thank you!
Jerry is one of the greatest guitar players!
EVER. PERIOD!
We're not worthy!
We're not worthy!
We're scum! We're SCUUUUM!
This is one of the greatest videos I've ever found posted on RUclips. Priceless. Thanks for sharing!
Unbelievable guitar player out of this world god bless him
Thank you for sharing your friendship with him: brilliant guy, and video.
