This was perfect pepboys wanted to charge 800$ to do it so i looked it up to see if it was worth it then i saw this video. only cost me 100$ and less then a hr of my time to do it my self. Thank you. You saved 700$
My 2014 Silverado wasn't so easy....I ended up having to drop the cross member for clearance, and cut off some unused threaded tabs on the replacement starter...but your video was still helpful...thank you...
THANK YOU!!! Your video is straight to the point and encouraged me to do the job myself. I was a bit apprehensive to tackle this job and after getting a quote from a local mechanic of $800+ to do it, I did a quick RUclips search, and I was glad I came across your video. I did do a mistake and put the wheel well back on before testing the new starter... I know, rookie mistake but one that I hope others learn from. Just like you I broke the red retaining clip and thought it was snug enough when I put it back on. When I tried to start the truck it was not clicking at all... Had to take the wheel well back off and discovered that the plug was not as snug as I had thought... I am trying to get it more secured but now it works better than before. Thank you again for a great video!
That was perfect he didn’t say too much she didn’t say too little quick and easy and straight to the point beautiful! I’m gonna change myself today thank you so much for the inspiration girl
It took 2 days to get all the grease off my hands after changing the starter on my 02 Sierra. Starter had so much oil buildup on it, that you couldn’t even read the labels on it until you wiped the thing off.
Quick and straight to the point, longest thing was removing the t15 screws from the wheel well lol but all in all 30 min - a 1 hr job if it’s your first time a second install should be about 30min
Excellent job!! I do all my own mechanical as much as I can because of cost and I'm pretty decent at it and to see a pretty girl that's good w her hands like this is damn cool! Thanx 4 video
Thanks! Just a heads up that the 4.3L V6 is a ridiculously tight squeeze. Save yourself the trouble and take off the tire, side covering, loosen the sway bar, unclip transmission coolant lines, remove skid plate and bend any heat shields out of the way. I had a heck of a time rotating the starter int position. Whole thing Took about 5hrs. I would not have wanted to do this in a parking lot somewhere, it took ALOT of finesse and cursing.
@@abrahamreyes3340 Good luck! I got to a point where it was almost lined up but I had to force it past the flywheel cover from the wheel well side with a small pry bar. I was using the Ultima starter from Oreilly. I believe that if I had the right set up removing the frame member would have made it a lot easier. The OEM came out with moderate finesse but I believe the Ultima is ever so slightly larger and was very different to manipulate. Let us know how it went for you in the comments. I don’t see a lot of comments from people working on the v6’s.
Good video, exactly how I did mine. I have a 2016 Sierra Denali and my starter crapped out on me out of the blue and stranded me. Also, don’t feel bad about breaking the little red clip. Everyone breaks them, GM uses cheap materials for electrical components.
That 2014 starter looks a lot easier then the one on my 2002 Sierra 5.3. They didn’t leave any slack in the wires, so you had to remove the wires by feel. Took me over a hour to change that starter. I routed the wires different to the new one, letting the wires hang off the back of the starter, instead of how the factory wrapped the wires around the sides of the starter. Doing that, I was able to connect the wires before bolting in the starter. Luckily the heat shield was easy to put back on. Just snaps on top of the solenoid on the 99-06 trucks.
Great video, mine was making a weird noise, but then stopped, on my 2017 with only 20,000 miles. It sounded like a chirp, and no, it wasn't belt related. Think I'll take it off and grease the heck out of it. Thanks for sharing
I seem to break all the clips.. I can't win when it comes to them😁. I used liquid electrical tape to secure mine back in place.. not sure how the detachment process will go, if I have to take it off again lol.

Think I might replace mine soon. I have a slight “chirp” on cold start. If that ain’t it alternator is next. What’s a few bucks to try to get rid of the noise.
Did it ever sound like it was struggling to start like if the battery was dead? I check the volts on both my batteries both good. Alternator charging at 14+ volts all day.
Ive been trying to change a starter on a 2014 4.3 for 2 days now. Only has 41k. The outer bolt came out easily by hand. The inner bolt wont budge. Ive sprayed it with a while can of kroil, pounded it with a hammer for hours, Blasted it with 3 impacts guns, tried to rock it loose with a pipe on a braker bar and it started to round off. Lol about to loose it. I have worked on absoluterust bucket jalopies for years never thought 1 bolt on somthing this new with this low of mileage would have me raging elmo fire for 2 days. Unbelievable...
how did you finally get it out of your 4.3? I've spent 2 hours tonight trying to wiggle it every which way and this thing is NOT coming out of my 4.3 either. Bolts were a non-issue thankfully. Should have just paid a shop at this point. All in the name of saving $
@@uriktai it was a pain in the butt, but getting the bolts out were worse i had to sneak it through the transmission cooker lines near back of oil pan near the 4x4 axle mount underneath.
@Forever Squared dang bud. It was tough. I hired a mechanic to help me and he lowered the front support I believe. Or it was like the transfer box? The thing that activates rotates the front wheels. It was a pain. Extra work
you disconnect battery then remove the 10mm heat shield bolt what a 10mm wrench then remove the 2x 13mm starter bolts lower starter then disconnect trigger wire then remove the 12v 13mm bolt and your done removing no need to remove fenger liner etc.. takes 20 min. to do !
