Changed my stater in a Walmart parking lot this morning after failure last night. This is the only video I watched and never changed a starter before…drove the truck home within a half hour
@@jarrodcombs8138 truck is stuck in a grocery store parking lot since last night rode my motorcycle to work this morning. Grabbing a starter after work and changing it in the parking lot hopefully it goes smooth
I just changed mine yesterday. Do yourself a favor and pull the wheel and the fender well out and you’ll have much better access to the wire housing/red clip. Go very very slow. I suggest trying to move the red clip back and forth before trying to just move it down to release it. Mine was very very brittle and I luckily didn’t break it. I followed this video and this is the only video you’ll need to watch to change the starter on this particular model. I used a small flat head screw driver on the red clip and treated it as if it was thin glass lol. Good luck guys
I just did my starter on my 2015 Silverado. I am a mechanic but I had to do it on my back with truck dead in the driveway and 29 degrees outside. So I looked it up here and did my homework so as to spend the least amount of time fighting the order of things to come off. This was spot on. Had starter out in 4 minutes lol. Nice job on this video.
Thank you for this video. I did the starter on the family wagon, a 2018 suburban. This video was very helpful. I am a RUclips certified mechanic, and I had the job done in about 45 mins.
Good info. The follow-up to this video is cleaning the crapped-up connections at the solenoid once the starter is out. No new starter required. Just use the wire wheel on your Dremel to clean the oxidation the main wire and connections. There's one 100% copper wire/connection that was turned blue-green from all the oxidation. Cleaned and VROOM on the 1st crank. Saved about $110 bucks.
I just got my starter out (and now I am waiting for a new one to come via ebay). By far, it was getting that wire connector (with the little red tab) off that stumped me the most. I spent literally more than an hour trying to figure out how it unsnaps. Using the tips of my fingers didn't work to "get that red tab down". I had to use a 90 degree pick (Harbor Freight) to gently pull on that red tab (maybe 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch) in the same direction that the wires are coming out (ie. You don't pull away from the body of the connector, you merely slide the red tab AWAY from where the connector does into the starter. Then you pinch and wiggle. I you do it correctly is should come off in about 3 seconds. Think of that red tab as being like a sliding door. When you slide it, it allows it to unlock from the starter motor. (You are not pinching the red tab or pulling it away from the body of the connector. You are sliding it like gate. Basically it is like it is on a track.
Great video! Very clear instructions. Thank you for listing the tools at the beginning. The job really would have only taken an amateur like me 15-20 mins except for the stupid wire connector. Even after reading Phaedrus’ very clear instructions, I still broke the tab and struggled for 40 mins to get it off. The red tab is super fragile. I broke it pulling down with my fingernail! Really take it slow so you don’t break it. Since I have gorilla hands and broke it, I had to figure out how to install it and have it stay on. I used a very small dab of gorilla glue on the male plastic adapter then once the wire connecter stayed in place, I reenforced it with zipties. Dealing with the stupid broken clip took way longer than it should have. Moral of the story, this video is fantastic, just take your time with the clip and be very very gentle with it or you will pay the idiot tax like me with extra time added on to the repair. Again, very simple job to DIYS, just be careful with the clip.
I broke the red tab trying to get mine. any idea how to replace it? I can't find the part online anywhere, probably because I dont know the exact name of it to search.
Thanks for the tip on the 90 degree pick, glad I tried to find the answer so I did not break it like many on here did. I also used a squirt of WD40 to reduce the friction on plastic to plastic rubbing. That and 90 degree pick was effortless pulling red tab toward the direction of clip removal.
I literally just did the starter in my truck this morning. I watched this video grabbed exactly the tools that were listed banged it out In 20 minutes in 25° 😂
Thank you for the clean and clear details on this. I generally watch these videos for the tips or info on the various connector scenarios as figuring out the blind ones or hard to get to connectors generally consumes the most of amount of time and swearing on these projects. I really wish that GM would at some point in time would have hired some one with enough confidence to move the solenoid for the starter to the fenderwell or other easy access location so it was just a one wire run to the starter and you could troubleshoot the electrical side without crawling under it. LITTLE UPDATE:---I have a 2018 silverado that I just finished pulling the starter and doing some maintenance on it. I have pulled a lot of starters in my time and have never actually replaced one with a new one for the fact that you can pretty much repair them with a few minor parts or clean them up and do a little maintenance on them to get them to work as they should. As I stated above the, the thing that really causes me a lot of pain are the various types of connectors that the auto manufactures use now. This starter is not difference. I pulled the passenger side wheel and inner fenderwell as to make it real easy to get to the connector and other terminal post. Even with that, I was not able to get the little red tab to slide as described. So I pulled the starter with that start wire still installed and flipped it over so I could see the clip straight on. Even right in front of me with compete easy access I was still not able to get the red lock clip to slide. So as I was on my last few attempts before calling it quits, cutting the wire and installing my own connector as I usually do with these pos connectors they use, the clip assembly began to just basically break apart and kind of crumble which allowed me to remove the connector. Now the good the part, I found the that connector mounted on the starter was nothing more than a pin type connector, like probably a 16 ga, with a ring terminal on the back side that terminates on the post of the solenoid. The plastic housing it is a part of is also part of the battery terminal post on top. I removed the housing, cut the worthless connector off and bolted the battery terminal portion back on. I then soldered on a ring terminal to the start wire and terminated it to the post the way it should have been done in the first place. I soldered the ring terminal on because I am a retired EE from the aerospace industry where we have to build stuff right the first time, not like the AI where they apparently just wing it. Thanks again for taking the time to put together this tutorial as It made this job easy to prepare for as well as insure I wasn't missing anything with that connector, they actually are just junk and using them is not at all a good design practice.
I know the very minimal DIY car projects like tire change, battery swap, oil change on my 2015 sierra Denali but have never tried something this intensive (which I know is still pretty basic for a mechanic). Money is kinda tight so I figured I’d look up how to do it myself. Mind you it took me 4-5 hrs to complete because I had some mishaps. Had to make a few runs to the auto store for wrong size ratchets needing a new jack, feeding kids and stuff like that. The actual job took 45 mins. You made this very simple. Thank you for saving me money and making such an easy to use video! Haha! Much appreciated! She started right up!
Great video, I will say if you are having issues with the wire clip or getting any bolts off , remove the wheel and wheel well (takes 10 min) and makes it much easier
This is an almost perfect video!!! Great Sound and video quality, good content, straight to the point. I just want to say thanks for taking the time to post it and share your knowledge. Keep the good work, we are watching!!!
Glad I found this! I wrote everything down in order of removal, and re-install for starter. Same deal as 1st comment guy! On my back, on cold ground, geez! But I need to do this myself to save $$$.
I’ve watched a few other videos on this install. They all show to remove the splash guard and the inner fender wheel liner. I didn’t see it on this video, I hope I don’t need to… will attempt this tomorrow. Wish me luck. 🤝
Great video. Watched before I did the job. The list of tools at the beginning of the vid was great. Video definitely helped me save money and time not having to deal with the dealership. Thanks !!

Great video! Mine just went on my 2018, was originally showing a throttle body engine code. But I will add if your from Canada like me and bolts are rusted you can access the main terminal from the passenger wheel well with 1.5’ of extensions!
Note to anyone doing this. Undo all the bolts first and take the starter partly down. So much easier to undo the clips without breaking it when you can reach it easily. Just don’t let it drop.
I just did a 2018 Silverado 1500 and had to take the inner fender out. I couldnt even get my hand near the starter to get at the connectors. Niot sure if there different than tyour model but i think it must be. Once the inner fender is out its super easy to get at the connections. Still had to wiggle the starter out of its hole. Plus it was hot as hell.
Thanks for the video. It was easy with the exception of the solenoid signal wire. That pig tail red clip snapped with just my fingers. Had to rig it to stay on.
Thanks for this video! I don’t consider myself very mechanically sound at all but I was able to get mine replaced in about an hour. Just as you described it. My arms wish I had the power ratchet though. Lol
Hey everyone. That Harbor Freight pick is item #4761 (orange handle) or you can use #815 (black handle): They are "Pittsburg Mini Pick & Hook Set". Spray WD40 on the wire connector first, because all the dirt and dust prevents the red tab from sliding easily. Remember to use the 90 degree pick and SLIDE the little red tab in the same direction it is already aligned. If you pull it AWAY from the connector, it will break.
Nobody wants to deal with a 2008 Chevy Trailblazer LS2 starter--it is tucked under the exhaust manifold. If I ever buy another vehicle, I want to know where the starter is. And the Alternator. But now you got to know where the battery is too for christ sake. The 3 main things you know you have to replace every few years. Good video. Thanks for the advice.
Did yours do the grind when it's cold out right after it starts before it broke or did it just crap out? Because whenever it's cold out like below freezing 32° or colder. It makes this little grind noise like it's still on the flywheel a little bit after it's fired but once the engine is warm it doesn't do it again
Good video, but I would recommend removing the positive battery cable. Removing the negative may be easier, but you run the risk of shorting your wrench out on any metal surface when removing positive cable from the starter.
Dealership quoted me $500 to replace my 2018 Sierra start.....I think they are on crack considering how little work goes into this. So glad I got a new lease so repairs weren't needed....
Dude Quoted me $3800 CAD to Build me a SHED 16x8 : Frame , install Roof and Shingles , install Windows , and Doors - I supply Materials I Think he is on CRACK !!!!
Thanks! Just a heads up that the 4.3L V6 is a ridiculously tight squeeze. Save yourself the trouble and take off the tire, side covering, loosen the sway bar, unclip transmission coolant lines, remove skid plate and bend any heat shields out of the way. I had a heck of a time rotating the starter int position. Whole thing Took about 5hrs. I would not have wanted to do this in a parking lot somewhere, it took ALOT of finesse and cursing.
I'm doing the same on a 2017 4.3 V6 and can't get the starter to come out won't fit. Is yours 4WD?? I've tried going thru the wheel well and from below. My Haynes manual mentions re!moving the front diff mount bracket..?
On my 2015 4 x 4, not jacked up, I found it easier to pull the passenger front wheel and lift the skirt to access the two solenoid wires. The cable coming off the battery won’t allow the starter to drop enough to get both of them. Pull the 13mm nut, let the starter drop, have the new starter readily available, let the old starter drop, remove the heat round shield pull the red tab out and pull the boot off . Install the boot ,lock the tab, feed the starter back up, bolt it up, then reconnect the cable coming from battery through the wheel well. Reinstall heat shields and your good to go. I do not have a shop, just a driveway, jack, stands and and good old set of Craftsman tools. Took about an hour with lessons learned. Thoughts?
So I’ve got a 2015 sierra that randomly won’t start. I have plenty of power and a brand new battery. When I turn the ignition it just clicks once. If I wait about 15-30 minutes depending on the day, then I can go try again and it will start. Does this sound like a starter issue or something in the ignition or steering column?
I installed the new starter started making noise when I started it like the flywheel wasn't lining up going to return it try to get another one hopefully defective wish me luck
This was a very instructional video! Very good steps. Just wish he would have shown as Rialto putting in new starter and alignment. But very very good!
Doing this in -30 on ice in the dark with big hands does not allow one to remain calm. Great video, very informative, but holy SMOKES can this get frustrating fast.
Awesome video! Helped me a lot when changing mine… downside is I broke the red tab when attempting to disengage it… now the electrical won’t stay clipped at the solenoid… 21st century and we haven’t come up with a better clip that isn’t affected by dust 😩
Phenomenal video, man. However, I too, broke the dang red clip. When attaching the connector to the new starter, unfortunately it wouldn’t clip on, so now I’m worried that it’ll vibrate loose over time. Anyone know if there is a replacement connector that can be spliced on in place of the broken connector?
Broke my clip last summer while replacing the starter... shook loose today and needed a tow home. Got under the truck, connector was loose... pushed back on and truck fired right up. Looking at options to repair right now vs. replace - not a lot of room to splice in there. Maybe a small dab of RTV/sillicone to keep it on. But I don't want it too attached in the event I need to replace starter again. Ugh.
I'm struggling with my replacement. The bolt closer to the engine came about halfway out and is now stuck. Spins freely but won't come out. Tried putting a pry bar on it but won't budge
Great video but I must say you need pretty small hands to fit in there or I have big hands. One thing I would add.. Be careful on the red clip, it breaks easy and GM wants a lot for pigtail. Tiny starter no wonder they fail,.
You are absolutely right about the hands. I can reach everything but not nearly as easy. And how the hell you get the connector off!? Pretty sure I broke the red tab on mine.
@@mkukua02 mine just pushed straight back, or should I say the replacement did, I broke mine too. The replacements are not the same as the old one, I bought a replacement pigtail and broke it to get the red tab out thinking I could put it in the old one, it won't go. So I ordered another, soldered it on. Not sure about the year but Amazon has replacements way cheaper than anyplace else search for ACDelco PT2974 it said it would not fit my truck (2018) but it did. It does come with a crimp connecter but I soldered mine on, not fun, but more trusting of that.
@@anthonymacneil2279 yeah now it just does it sometimes and i always listen on a cold start. It sounds louder by the front passenger tire. I think its prolly the starter
Mine has done that exact same thing forever and now my starter just skipped twice in the past week. I had my engine replaced at 140,000 under warranty and it still did it after. I'll report back after I change it. Might be a few days. Going to replace it and I bet any money it fixes the squeal on a cold start too.
Hey thanks for the help!! I did have a question though I reinstalled the new starter but now it makes a grinding sounding the old starter didn’t come with shims but should I install shims in the new one also I broke the little red tab that that locks for the signal wire having trouble getting that connection to stay put
Stacy Starrett went from an aftermarket starter (Duralast) back to OEM new starter no shims needed and zip tied broken connection in place super glue might work too
I’m getting a loud single click on my Yukon (intermediated) especially when wet outside. Is this what starter issues sound like on these push button start vehicles?
Had same issue hace you figured it out? I'm pretty set on it being the starter because if I have somebody get in the truck and keep trying to crank and I get underneath and hit it it will start it's almost like the mechanism is getting jammed
@@jacobhurd3072 yes you know how when you turn the key and it does the intermittent Time start, well that fancy option on new vehicles is going to make it very hard to diagnose this the way you would in an older vehicle because you can just turn the key and hold it to engage the starter and have a better test that doesnt last 5 seconds 😆
Thx easy to do ,just a comment wrap your starter with heat insulation like you would your headers, the 2018 models of sierra get hot with the starter so close to the exhaust .
Hey man my silverado has no power at all tried turning it on this morning with remote hit the lock both on twice and it beeped, and then it clicked once and didnt turn on tried unlocking it wouldnt respond had to unlock it with the key, tried the ignition with the key and no power wats so ever, had the battery tested and the batter is good 100% would this be the starter at fault since its not even clicking when key is turned or gauges light up.
Same problem last year and just happened again this year... last year changed the starter and battery worked after... now having same problems buddy who was a mechanic says probably bad alternator not properly charging the battery causing damage to the starter... so this year I going to change both and see what happens.. 2014 sierra 1500 5.3 with 125k
My dealership service dept lost the bolt that holds the heat shield on. Does anyone know what the threads are? 1/4-20 doesn’t fit and neither does M8x1.25
would that be a good result for my truck problem? it's start but then after a while of running.. and I get the my destination and I turned it off. and then don't want to start again
first thing i would do is to check for a loose battery cable. next would be to make sure the battery is good, have it tested by any oreilly or autozone. after that test for good voltage at the starter connections while this issue is occurring
This is what is currently going on with my truck, When I go to start it, it clicks and sounds like its going to fail then it starts. Then when I kill it when I get to my destination it won't start back up. I went to autozone and they told me it was my alternator so I replaced that but it's still doing the same thing. Battery is fine they said.
I was wondering what the heat shield was now I know! Thanks it was off space my starter has been getting a whoop ass so it can start ima need a new one
@@AaronHinesAuto I know it's the starter because it started 15+ times after a beating and I learned it's the original one and died at 134k miles so I think it served its purpose

Just changed my first starter ever on my 2016 GMC Sierra. Your video helped, especially the wrench sizes. Much appreciated man.
Did yours do the grind when it's cold out right after it starts before it broke or did it just crap out? Because whenever it's cold out like below freezing 32° or colder. It makes this little grind noise like it's still on the flywheel a little bit after it's fired but once the engine is warm it doesn't do it again
Best damn how to video I’ve ever seen
Good video, but I would recommend removing the positive battery cable. Removing the negative may be easier, but you run the risk of shorting your wrench out on any metal surface when removing positive cable from the starter.
James.
Once the battery(s) is disconnected, the circuit is no longer closed or looped. There will be zero risk of shorting and arcy sparky.
Dealership quoted me $500 to replace my 2018 Sierra start.....I think they are on crack considering how little work goes into this. So glad I got a new lease so repairs weren't needed....
Dude Quoted me $3800 CAD to Build me a SHED 16x8 : Frame , install Roof and Shingles , install Windows , and Doors - I supply Materials
I Think he is on CRACK !!!!
my local dealership asked last week for my 2017 sierra $1100. I bought it for OEM $160 and I will doing this this week. Unbelievable scams and evil
Thank you for the video, just changed it out myself on a 2019 Suburban
Got to agree. Great video. Good filming, commentary and right to the point. I wish you great success.
Thoughts?
This video was very helpful. I think I'm going to attempt putting my own in because the video makes it look so easy! Thank you!
I broke the red clip too. How did you all get the connector off after that? I can’t get it apart
My started just went out this is the best damn video out there . Liked and Subbed ✅
Thank you for this video . It was done very well and thorough please keep doin more videos . Thank you again
Followed this for a 2017. perfect instructions. Nice work.
I installed the new starter started making noise when I started it like the flywheel wasn't lining up going to return it try to get another one hopefully defective wish me luck
This was a very instructional video! Very good steps. Just wish he would have shown as Rialto putting in new starter and alignment. But very very good!
What's the foot/lbs on the starter bolts?
Doing this in -30 on ice in the dark with big hands does not allow one to remain calm. Great video, very informative, but holy SMOKES can this get frustrating fast.
Awesome video! Helped me a lot when changing mine… downside is I broke the red tab when attempting to disengage it… now the electrical won’t stay clipped at the solenoid… 21st century and we haven’t come up with a better clip that isn’t affected by dust 😩
I did the same thing. I'm gonna put cable ties around mine and hope the exhaust doesn't melt them haha. How did you fix it?
@@kylepetten I tied mine up with rubber coated flexy wire you buy for tree stand hunting. You can find similar in Lowe’s called nite ize gear hanger.
I broke the red tab too. But I was able to click the connector on the starter firmly. ‘18 5.3. Maybe GM changed the design
Ugh.
How did you line up the little gear end on the starter to that hole?
Automatic thumbs up for Lords of Summer intro
I'm struggling with my replacement. The bolt closer to the engine came about halfway out and is now stuck. Spins freely but won't come out. Tried putting a pry bar on it but won't budge
Your battery voltage on your dash shows about 14V, is that normal? Or should it be around 12.X if left sitting for a bit
Was the negative battery cable for me. Unhooked it about 5 mins hooked it back up started
This was all done from underneath the passenger side wheel?
According to the comments, sounds like someone needs to make a video just about removing that red clip! lol
90* pick helps a lot
Great bud my 2018 Silverado with 42000 miles starter just went out. this was very helpful!
What happened to your starter? Have a 2017 that initial start it makes a sqeak but works fine. It's annoying should I change or grease the shaft?
2018 46000 same problem
Wouldn't this be covered under warranty
Wtf my 2018 silverado wouldn't start this morning test battery was fine .41000miles .
@@NCsurfer607 same my 2018 Chevrolet Silverado LT starter went out at 46,000
I saw another guy post a video and he took off wheel housing -- would that make it easier?
Great video but I wish you show the new unit going in. That's the stage I'm stuck on?
Thanks for the great video!
Thanks for the video man, really helped. Good info, and got me where I needed!
Very helpful, thanks! 👍👍
Great video!! Thank you for the help!
Quick question do you have to shim the starter?
Do you torque the starter bolts?
How many miles did your truck have when the starter failed?
Did you complete removal without taking inner fender off?
Quick easy to follow
Thank you for the video. ❤
Quality content!! I’m about to go get mine out!
Mine makes a squealing noise just when its cold. But once its warm no noise when turning on. Could it also be the starter ?
I'm getting the same just at intial startup a sqeak. I replaced serpentine and tensioner and is still there. Are your symptoms the same? Its annoying
@@anthonymacneil2279 yeah now it just does it sometimes and i always listen on a cold start. It sounds louder by the front passenger tire. I think its prolly the starter
@@eddieg6214 Sounds like it, mine does it most of the time now. Squeak/chirp. Maybe take the starter out and grease the hell out it might be a plan
Mine has done that exact same thing forever and now my starter just skipped twice in the past week. I had my engine replaced at 140,000 under warranty and it still did it after. I'll report back after I change it. Might be a few days. Going to replace it and I bet any money it fixes the squeal on a cold start too.
@@Sveinn1984 lmk ! Ima just leave it till something happens lol i aint got money to be replacing parts
Hey thanks for the help!! I did have a question though I reinstalled the new starter but now it makes a grinding sounding the old starter didn’t come with shims but should I install shims in the new one also I broke the little red tab that that locks for the signal wire having trouble getting that connection to stay put
Having both of these issues right now, did you ever get it figured out?
Stacy Starrett went from an aftermarket starter (Duralast) back to OEM new starter no shims needed and zip tied broken connection in place super glue might work too
I’m getting a loud single click on my Yukon (intermediated) especially when wet outside. Is this what starter issues sound like on these push button start vehicles?
not necessarily . i would check battery connections and battery voltage while cranking. a loose terminal or low voltage can cause that isssue
Had same issue hace you figured it out? I'm pretty set on it being the starter because if I have somebody get in the truck and keep trying to crank and I get underneath and hit it it will start it's almost like the mechanism is getting jammed
Did you ever figure it out? im having same problem now on a 2019
@@JohnSmithduh Did you ever figure it out?
@@jacobhurd3072 yes you know how when you turn the key and it does the intermittent Time start, well that fancy option on new vehicles is going to make it very hard to diagnose this the way you would in an older vehicle because you can just turn the key and hold it to engage the starter and have a better test that doesnt last 5 seconds 😆
The red tab broke, what should I do now?
Does it matter how the starter goes back in? I always worry I put it in wrong and feel like it is going to grind till it catches
Hey, did you ever find a solution to that?? I have a 2019 1500 and its doing the exact same problem, so frustrating
Nice it's so easy on some.. mines about to go out. Very small compared to late model chevy pick ups. 2011 is today.. blessings
Very clear and informative, thank you
Awesome guide, thank you
Did you have to take out the fender liner to reach the starter?
Saved me $200
How are the 60 dollar Amazon starters? Do they last a long time?
My dealership service dept lost the bolt that holds the heat shield on. Does anyone know what the threads are? 1/4-20 doesn’t fit and neither does M8x1.25
does the truck need to be on a lift?
Everyhing was great would of loved the location of it but the rest is very helpful thank you
How different would the 4.3 V6 in a 2016 Sierra be?
Thanks straight forward
dude..this was a lot of help
I’m glad to hear
would that be a good result for my truck problem? it's start but then after a while of running.. and I get the my destination and I turned it off. and then don't want to start again
first thing i would do is to check for a loose battery cable. next would be to make sure the battery is good, have it tested by any oreilly or autozone. after that test for good voltage at the starter connections while this issue is occurring
ok thanks sure I will do that
This is what is currently going on with my truck, When I go to start it, it clicks and sounds like its going to fail then it starts. Then when I kill it when I get to my destination it won't start back up. I went to autozone and they told me it was my alternator so I replaced that but it's still doing the same thing. Battery is fine they said.
I already fixed it was the starter.. thanks for the video
@@ChrisAndrewPalomares same here.. 2014 Silverado.. did you ever find your problem?
What side of the truck is the starter on driver or passenger side
Passenger side. If you don't have a lift, it's much easier if you remove the wheel and wheel well cover.
Excellent, I think i can do by myself
Great video
Ya mine has some oil block ..blocking me from taking out the starter
You took intimidating to easy in 5 minutes lol
I was wondering what the heat shield was now I know! Thanks it was off space my starter has been getting a whoop ass so it can start ima need a new one
So I took it off and went to auto zone they said it's fine but do you think cleaning it and spraying alot of wd40 helped passing their test?
thats a bummer
@@AaronHinesAuto I know it's the starter because it started 15+ times after a beating and I learned it's the original one and died at 134k miles so I think it served its purpose
Thanks for the video man. Wish me luck 😅
