One of the best videos I ever watched. Clear speaking and good camera work. I had watched another and it was pretty good, but never hurts for a second look at things. My trouble happened to be the solenoid clip. I took your advice but didnt take off the starter. Was able to take a utility knife and scored it about 10 times and then used a screwdriver to break it off. For sure a blessing to not have to pull the starter. Once I watched yours I went and took off the tire and fender weld protection. I noticed the wire was not completely set in connector and only like an 1/8 of an inch. I pushed it in and the truck started perfect. Put the terminal on and back down the road I go. I consider myself a middle of the road on hand size. Not sure if a big handed or fat finger person has a chance. Problem: Truck wouldnt start, but I could try and crank about 4-6 times real quick and it would finally crank. When I would let it warm up I could crank it back if I tried within about an hours time and then it was back to the same thing. Chevrolet house said it was probably in the computer, but would know until they diagnosed it. This would be 6 working days and would have to leave the truck there from then until they got to it. Couldnt help but think it was in the starter some how and you helped me out tons!!!!! Thanks.

Wish I watched this video yesterday.lol Took me 4 hours. I broke my red plastic tab off too. I still tried to plug it back in but went to start it and wouldn’t crank. I have lights on my cluster and headlights. I’m gonna do the ring terminal too. Great thinking sir! I’m confused a bit. Is the wire you put the ring terminal on the negative or positive charge?
Just did a 2015 silverado with 105k and i managed to not break the clip thankfully. I was fully prepared to use your suggestion though its a great idea. It was insanely hard to get it reclipped on the replacement though. And of course One of the starter bolts pulled some theads out.. good thing im used to nothing going as planned haha

Great tip about your QUICK SIMPLE FIX. As careful as I tried to be with the plastic plug, it still broke. After replacing it with a terminal ring as you had shown I was able to connect the terminal ring to the starter just as I had started slipping the starter past the frame before I bolted the starter into place as I had good access to the 10 mm nut with a socket. Thanks, you saved me a big headache and probably more money at the stealers.
Great thanks. That’s what I was thinking of doing too but it’s nice to see other people using common sense to reassure me. I was doing work underneath and there was lots of dryer packed in gravel/mud and I was chipping at it and managed to break the connection portion on the starter itself(which you can’t buy) . Very well done great video That's what I needed. Even my plug was in ok. I have no crank. ..so I'm going to pick up a new single wire high temp plug so a mount on end on starter the other on wire. So it's easier to in stall. Great great great video
Thanks! Just a heads up that the 4.3L V6 is a ridiculously tight squeeze. Save yourself the trouble and take off the tire, side covering, loosen the sway bar, unclip transmission coolant lines, remove skid plate and bend any heat shields out of the way. I had a heck of a time rotating the starter int position. Whole thing Took about 5hrs. I would not have wanted to do this in a parking lot somewhere, it took ALOT of finesse and cursing.
Nice tip. Is it possible to still put a ring terminal without cutting off the connector? I paid 275 dollars for it at Autozone with a lifetime warranty. I don't see them warranting it out if that connector is cut off.
I haven’t had to return any starters for warranty but most parts store aren’t going to pay close enough attention to catch the modification. If you don’t want to take that chance, It may be possible to bend the ring terminal 90*, if you go this route you will probably want to test and pre bend it on the work bench (make sure the socket and nut fit when going on the terminal) before you crimp it on the wire. If you still have your core you could just keep the plastic part off of that one for future warranty claims. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Good video. I’m curious as to what your problem was for you to replace the starter. I had a 2001 Suburban 2500 and now a 2015 Silverado 1500. Both have done the same thing. Thought maybe a ground but after getting into the wheel well and seeing the starter solenoid I’m thinking it may be that. This is how I arrived at your video. My problem is I turn the key and hear the starter relay under the hood click but no starter kicks in. Sometimes repeating (turning the key to start) I can get it to turn over. If it won’t start, I’ll have to leave it for several hours (overnight) and when I come back it starts perfectly. Then it will continue to work for days, weeks, months. Seems more susceptible in the 20 - 40 degree F range when it’s humid. I live near the border of IL/WI and the truck sits outside most of the time.
My problem started when I started the truck the starter seemed weaker than normal and then it would randomly not start. I load tested the batteries and both were good. I work on several of these trucks so I tend to replace the starter as soon as it shows any signs of failing. It’s not too bad of a job at home but I hate having to do it in a busy parking lot. lol. Same thing happened with my 18 silvardo wouldn't start then after many time it would then would be good for months happened about 5 times over more than year always in winter in mn finally wouldn't start at at all got new starter been good for 1tear so far weird it acted this way
I was extra cautious when dealing with my red tab and it still shattered from being so brittle. My starter should arrive today and I will install it tomorrow morning. I have everything broken down already and I’m definitely going to use the ring terminal method.
I haven’t had any issues with heat and figured it isn’t any different than the main power terminal. I think the heat shield was just there to keep the oem connector from getting brittle and falling apart. (It didn’t really keep that from happening anyway lol). Bout to tackle this exact job. Pretty sure my starter is fine and the plug has simply become dry rot. Gunna burn $300 on a new starter anyway. If I’ve gotta remove it, might as well replace it. Definitely getting rid of that plug. Think I’ll find a ring terminal that fits instead of cutting and bending a small one. (Not saying what you did doesn’t work. 😊 Thank you for the video. Just did this job of a 44,000 mile GMC. Nothing wrong with any part of the starter except that the connector from the motor to the solenoid appeared to be soldered. Most solder uses a flux.......if this is correct, corrosion is inevitable. Cleaned the greenish crust off, coated everything with Di-electric Permatex. Back together with the original 'stuff' which now works great. Took me less than two hours, I am 85. Seems like this kind of 'stuff' is made to fall apart just after the warranty expires?? My '61 Pontiac has a starter made in the late 1960's. Never failed in however many years it has been in service. Everything today is throw-away???
Thanks. Use a little flathead screwdriver and gently pry it back towards the wire. It shouldn’t have to be taken completely out but it happens sometimes. Dirt, dust and brittle plastic sometimes makes it impossible unfortunately. If you want to get a clear look at how it works check out the plug on your MAF sensor it operates the same way and is very easy to see.
Get the battery load tested first to ensure it is still good. If the battery is good there is a good possibility that the starter is going bad. The starters I’ve changed have typically been between 60,000-80,000 miles. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!!!
I’ve got a 14 I don’t believe mine has that heat shield I don’t know if mine didn’t come with it or someone before me didn’t put it back. With that being said would it cause issues not having it
I wouldn’t worry about it. I typically remove them as soon as I cut the OEM plug off and put the ring connector on. It’s just there to prevent the plug from getting brittle and does a poor job at that anyway. Thanks for watching!!!
Sure thing, I haven’t had any issues with this repair. I have done it to 5 or 6 other trucks at this time all with no problems. It’s a solid repair. There is a replacement plug and pigtail available if you want to retain that feature. A person commented a while back about unpinning the old plug and installing the new plug. It’s super easy to do with the starter out of the way. Just cut as close to the plug as possible I actually cut through a bit of the plug and a good solid crimp. You will be good to go.
You don't need to splice in a new connector if you break the red clip. The plastic parts of the connector easily disassemble. Buy a new connector pigtail and pry out the gray core with a small screw driver or steak knife from the side. Next push two small paper clip pins into the two small holes on each side of the metal connector until they bottom out. Now slide the plastic connector off the metal crimped wire connector. Repete with the broken one then simply slide the new connector then the gray core onto the existing metal crimped connector.
Those plastic connectors are doomed to break every time. Heat on plastic what were those engineers thinking? I found my starter after hot soaking would fail.. I found my connections corroded and I installed a bigger and better heat shield.Same old starter now works great every time.
I really couldn’t tell you I haven’t had to work on the diesel. One of the guys that left a comment was saying the starter is different in the 2500 and 3500. The truck in the video was a 1500 with a 5.3.
It very well could be. If you haven’t already done it get your battery load tested and make sure all the connections are clean and tight. I have replaced quite a few of these starters at this point on trucks over 70,000 miles so I pretty much just throw a starter in them if the battery test good. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching!!!
I haven’t tried it yet but I would be tempted to just wire it up straight to the terminals on the solenoid and delete that little plastic piece all together. I know the switch wire will work, just need to make sure there is enough wire on the main wire and bend the ring terminal a bit to work. Otherwise junkyard if you have any close by. Good luck with your project.
@@sloth-worx i didn’t see anything melted I think I just ran into the same problem as you with the switch wire and the guy who owned the truck before me must not have bolted the main wire well enough because the nut was missing and the terminal on the starter side was damaged from vibration
Dude - I don't care what Anybody Says or Thinks ... What you did to that wire is an UPGRADE in my opinion! That ridiculous plug with that stupid clip thing on it is a BAD DESIGN - Nuthin' Wrong with using a Simple Ring Terminal to connect... In Fact, it's probably BETTER!
I've Upgraded all my Grounds on my 2018 and even added on a few New Grounds. These Brittle Wire Harnesses are a Joke. Sometimes Easier is just EASIER!!
That’s not the worst part, I was beyond annoyed that the engineers would make a simple 5 min battery replacement a 45 min job having to unscrew the bracket the fuse box that connects to battery and the coolant resvoir Just to get the battery out. I live in a cold state so anyone who’s never seen under the hood of an 18 model silverado Will totally be unprepared and jaw dropped to find out it won’t be a quick unscrew two bolts and change battery while they are standing in the freezing snow and wind chills stranded with no power . I swear these engineers are tool bags

Next time just take the cross brace bracket completely out you don’t have to remove the coolant reservoir you can angle it and get it out . The little tie bar that connect to it I mean take that out as well .
@@AnDrEw122100 I didn’t take out the cooler reservoir I just loosened the bolts on it and tipped the battery side ways and pulled it out. Fck it. Been running fine since lol

It’s not half assed that’s the way they used to do it years ago and still should be doing it nowadays. And getting the replacement connector will put you right back in the same boat if you ever have to change the starter again
Relax, dude - a Wire's still just a Wire ... a Connect is still just a Connect. Those ridiculous shoddy clipon plugs are prone to Failure and are just a BAD Design altogether. By removing the "problem child" Once and for All, he actually did the electronics in his Truck a HUGE favor. Nuthin' wrong with substituting a piece of junk for a Simple Direct Connect using a Tried & True method that has worked JUST FINE for Half a Century.
That trick with the ring terminal was a life saver. Great video sir! Removed the old one and installed the new one in little less than 2 hours

It’s the signal wire, when the key is turned it engages the solenoid on the starter

That entire plastic piece you cut in half crapped out on me, the starter is in fine working order otherwise I wonder where I can find just that

If it is melted I would be concerned that there is something else wrong that needs to be addressed first.
@@sloth-worx i didn’t see anything melted I think I just ran into the same problem as you with the switch wire and the guy who owned the truck before me must not have bolted the main wire well enough because the nut was missing and the terminal on the starter side was damaged from vibration
That makes sense. If the starter side is messed up beyond getting a nut back on there you will unfortunately have to get a new starter.

What you did to that wire is an UPGRADE in my opinion! That ridiculous plug with that stupid clip thing on it is a BAD DESIGN - Nuthin' Wrong with using a Simple Ring Terminal to connect... In Fact, it's probably BETTER!
I've Upgraded all my Grounds on my 2018 and even added on a few New Grounds.
These Brittle Wire Harnesses are a Joke.

That’s not the worst part, I was beyond annoyed that the engineers would make a simple 5 min battery replacement a 45 min job having to unscrew the bracket the fuse box that connects to battery and the coolant resvoir Just to get the battery out. I live in a cold state so anyone who’s never seen under the hood of an 18 model silverado Will totally be unprepared and jaw dropped to find out it won’t be a quick unscrew two bolts and change battery while they are standing in the freezing snow and wind chills stranded with no power . I swear these engineers are tool bags
Sometimes I think the engineers do that crap on purpose. lol the battery is terrible, the brake vacuum pump on a 4x4 is very annoying but at least they haven’t started putting the starter under the intake YET. Thank you for watching and commenting!!!
Next time just take the cross brace bracket completely out you don’t have to remove the coolant reservoir you can angle it and get it out . The little tie bar that connect to it I mean take that out as well .
@@AnDrEw122100 I didn’t take out the cooler reservoir I just loosened the bolts on it and tipped the battery side ways and pulled it out. Fck it. Been running fine since lol

It’s not half assed that’s the way they used to do it years ago and still should be doing it nowadays. And getting the replacement connector will put you right back in the same boat if you ever have to change the starter again
Relax, dude - a Wire's still just a Wire ... a Connect is still just a Connect.
Those ridiculous shoddy clipon plugs are prone to Failure and are just a BAD Design altogether. By removing the "problem child" Once and for All, he actually did the electronics in his Truck a HUGE favor. Nuthin' wrong with substituting a piece of junk for a Simple Direct Connect using a Tried & True method that has worked JUST FINE for Half a Century.
Yep I did this after I broke my connector. Fuck those plastic ends. Now I have piece of mind
