I would make fun of Greg's weight, but I am fighting a weight problem of my own, and at 80, I'm losing despite putting in more miles on the bike than the car and only eating two meals a day.
@@tomkunich9401 everyone is on their own journey. Those that make cracks about others are usually the ones who have the most problems with themselves whether they recognize it or not. The fact that both you and Greg are out cycling and enjoying it is what matters the most. At 80, I hope I am still on a bike like you. Cheers.
I had the chance to meet Laurent Fignon in Chicago. Nicest guy in the world. His autobiography is incredible: "We Were Young and Carefree". RIP Laurent Fignon
At the time Greg went up against Laurent in that fateful time trial, he was public enemy number one for me. All I see now is a true cycling champion that we sadly lost too young.
I grew up in Boulder, saw LeMond at the Red Zinger when he rode for Avocet. His '86 win inspired me to head to Europe in '87, and ignite a life-long love for cycling. Thanks Matt for living the dream for many of us...riding with Greg
I had a poster of Lemond on my wall, I think it was a page from Cycling Weekly or something, posing the question "Can Lemond win the Tour?" following his return from injury. I remember writing "yes he can!" then adding "By 8 seconds!" on it. So exciting, and this episode brought those memories flooding back. Thank you!
Lemond ignited my passion for cycling as an American college student in the ‘80s. And although I’ve had the opportunity to meet several “high profile” racers over the decades, Greg’s is the only autograph I’ve ever asked for. 100% class act!
I’m awestruck so see Greg Lemond close and personal. What an inspiring presence! Mad respect that he can still ride a bike so beautifully. Thank you Matt for a fantastic interaction with this legendary cycling figure. Enjoyed this very much!!😄🚴🏻🚴🏻♂️🍾
Greg was also my childhood hero wanted to be just like him and now I am we both have leukemia, no joke. I hope his treatment goes as well as mine has, I’m posting PR’s like I did 6 years ago.
This video made my heart sing! It’s inspiring seeing Greg happy on the bike and sharing stories. In 2000, I turned 42 and after much searching, bought my first high-end road bike-a bright red LeMond Tourmalet. As a female, this bike fit me perfectly. My then husband was loading it into our truck and said “Do you really think you’ll ride it that much?” 24 years later, I’ve owned other bikes, but never parted with the LeMond. It taught me to ride and navigate life on two wheels. Thanks, Greg!
Greg inspired me to ride back in the 1980's and influenced all of my cycling purchases. A true hero. Oakley needs a signature Lemond pair of glasses in yellow and blue.
One of those videos when you blink and all of a sudden, 36 minutes goes by! I was 13 when Lemond won the '89 Tour, remember it like it was yesterday. One of the legends of the sport and a nice guy too it seems
I remember watching Greg Lemond finish a stage of the Coor's Classic in Sacramento. My sister and I chased him after the finish, trying to get an autograph, but he rode straight into his hotel lobby, and we weren't allowed in, and so I never got an autograph. But it's a treasured memory, and one of 2 times that I got to see him up-close. He's a true legend.
The “Sun King”. I got to spend time with Greg as a collegiate cyclist in 1997ish in Atlanta. He was touring the US unvielling/promoting his “LeMond” bicycle line. Vinnings cycling and fitness was a large multiple dealership in the area that sponsored our team. I got a call from my brother “LeMond is standing in the freaking shop!!!!” I raced over walked in and was star struck. He was so polite and humble. So regular and easy to talk to. He chuckled at my face as I walked in disbelief that the “Sun King” was standing in front of me. The night before (not knowing anything about him scheduled to be in our home shop) we watched recorded footage of his career and tour wins. It was fresh….almost to fresh to see him in person the next day lol. Changed me and my brothers that day and we still bring it up from time to time. Still cycle regularly. What a sport and opportunity. Godbless you all!!!’
This was an emotional video. The 1989 TdF gave me my love of cycling aged 17 and here I am aged 52 still at it and it’s thanks to Greg Lemond. Bought my Giro Air Attack helmet and Oakley Factory Pilots because of him. Cost me a fortune at the time but had to be done. So great to hear Greg reminiscing and happy. Truly inspirational especially when you read the goals he set himself. Just awesome to watch 👊
Loved this one Matt, watching Greg win the 89 tour was the reason I got back into cycling again at the age of 29. 64 now and still riding 200+ miles a week. Three cycling heroes in my life, Eddy, Greg and now of course Tadej…
Great memories. I loved everything about cycling. The bikes, equipment, clothing and riding of course. Just starting out as a young rider myself when LeMond broke into the scene. He is probably my favorite rider of all time though I enjoy all of his contemporaries at the time. Watched him won all his tours on the network over John Tesh score. The music made the suffering and the triumph all the more dramatic. The movie “The last rider in” took me back to all those moments I was clued to the TV watching the Tour de France unfold. I bet there were many like me.
I was grinning through the whole video seeing Matt and Greg The Lemondster!!! Fantastic!!! Matt you are a hidden gem of a interviewer. Was good seeing Greg back on the bike.
That's hard to top, a gentleman and a legend, Greg just oozes class. Matt's childhood dreams made this even more special, they say don't meet your heroes, but in this case, it was perfect. 💛
He exudes class on the bike. Even after all these years, it strikes you so vividly. Puts me in mind of when I saw a long-retired Maradona dictate a charity football match with the wand on his left leg.
Guess I should have kept my Oakleys from that era. Started watching the Tour cuz of Greg.. every night we’d take our dinner plates upstairs to where the TV was in our small home. Fond memories. Got to hear Greg speak, mid-2000’s, in the Pac NW USA. Nice film, thanks.
My face hurts. I've been smiling throughout this whole video. The mid-eighties is when I was just out of high school and discovered cycling, and watching Greg (and everyone else back then) in the Tour was part of the happiest time in my life. Good to see you out there on a bike, Greg! Someone needs to make a movie/comedy about some over-the-hill and long-since-retired cyclists coming out of retirement to race the Tour: Greg Lemond, Bernard Hinault, Steve Bauer, Andy Hampsten, Sean Kelly, Phil Anderson...the list goes on. I'd pay to see that!
The whole 1989 TdF was a drama. After week 2 the lead changed almost daily between Lemond and Fignon, each day they attacked each other and the lead was always less than a minute. The final-stage TT was the crescendo in that drama.
Thank you for this excellent video. Greg is a true gentleman, and the kind of ambassador our sport has always needed. It was a copy of L’equip from just before the start of the 1989 TDF, and he said that they had only given him a fifty percent chance of finishing! I nodded and nervously (starstruck) said “proved them wrong”. He just smiled and told us to enjoy the race and have a nice weekend, then he vanished into the crowd on the sidewalk. That was mint. Thanks so much for posting. I have so much respect for Greg LeMond. He was the first TdF winner I paid much attention to. He's an absolute legend.
Everyone remembers the final stage of the 1989 TdF but for me it’s got to be stage 16 of the 1990 race. In the Channel 4 days I hadn’t missed a stage for several years but on the 17th July 1990 I was out after work in central London and met a young lady. Several drinks later it was too late to get home to watch the race. Greg Lemond was, and always will be, a legend. The young lady became my wife (29th wedding anniversary on 29th August), however every 17th July I like to remind her it was the day Greg Lemond took back just over two minutes from Claudio Chiappucci, virtually winning him the race, and I missed it ‘because of her’ 🙂
My absolute idol growing up. Was so lucky to run into him on a trout stream in southern Wisconsin one evening years ago when he was on the way back to Minnesota from, I think a car race iirc. Got to fly fish with him for a few hours. It was so, so hard to not pepper him with questions about cycling. We talked only fishing the whole evening. Legend.
Greg Lemond. You have been an inspiration to me when I was a kid in the 80s. I’ve loved riding and watching racing ever since. My youngest son had leukemia and has been 7 years cancer free. My first experience of bike racing was watching the 1986 TdF. There was something magical about it back then that has been lost in the modern ultra-performance approach. The UK TV commentary with Phil and Paul also contributed to the magic.

I can't think of two more likeable guys in cyclilng - just fun to watch them hang. I think Lemond is still what the sport needs - someone who knows and respects the mental and physiological challenge but has the integrity to call things as they are. Matt Stephens is fantastic at charming his subjects into sharing themselves and in the process he wins over the viewers too. We're fortunate to have this.
Greg Lemond gave me a lifelong love of cycling. I was so happy to see him looking healthy and happy considering his recent health struggles.

I think Lemond is still what the sport needs - someone who knows and respects the mental and physiological challenge but has the integrity to call things as they are. Matt Stephens is fantastic at charming his subjects into sharing themselves and in the process he wins over the viewers too. We're fortunate to have this.
Love these Matt. Watch nerd too. The Tag Chrono looked cool 😊
