      Interesting thing is that the Belgian team had discussed this and Remco had told them that it's a great spot to attack because there would surely be a big attack on Montmartre and everybody's legs would be heavy just after. Hence Wva looking back and going to the front to slow down the group

    • @ozfunghi
      @ozfunghi 26 дней назад

      Nobody "let him", they simply didn't have the legs to follow at that point. The group of Van der Poel and Van Aert had just gone all out on Montmartre a few km before, and Pedersen just dug deep trying to bridge. There were probably only 3 people in the race who could have followed his attack, one being a teammate, and the other two had just dug deep. Van Baarle went to the front a few moments later to pull for MvdP, and yet Evenepoel simply kept increasing his lead rapidly.

      @@tonyg3091 A "well organized real peloton"? You mean like the one in Wollongon? Or like the one in Liège? Twice. Or the one in San Sebastian? Thrice. Or a couple of dozens of other solos he won? So funny people keep thinking other riders "let him" ride away. As if they all want him to win and his rivals are secretly cheering for him. He attacks when the others are dead, that's what he does. And if they aren't dead yet, he will squeeze them dead in his wheel. Like he did all those times, and like he did now.
      The fact that you bring up the TdF shows you are missing some cycling knowledge. TdF is a 3 week race, and there is always a next day. Pulling a stunt like this, even when successful will have consequences the next day(s). Furthermore, the TdF has no classic style stages like this, and definitely not of this length. Maybe go back and take a look at stage 17 of the TdF and look at the final. Now imagine that stage was not 175km, but 275km and what the gap with Vingegaard would have been like.

What Vingeggard has won son far, a part from Tour de France? Basically NOTHING major! Remco: 2 straight Liege Bastogne Liege, three San Sebastian, world champion both time trial and road, double Olympic champion, European Champion time trial and silver for the same on the road, Vuelta and so many other medium and minor races. For me no doubt to pick the best between Vingeggard and Remco: the Belgian Super Champion! The only one that so far is superior is Pogacar and just behind him only Remco.

On Belgian television he said that he had visions of Madouas passing him by while still changing bikes. His DS rode up to him to tell him he could calm down as the gap was still a minute ... hence the funny reaction a bit later. The DS got fined 🙂

    Remco missed the MVDP attack as he'd been back at the car and was out of position, not because he'd attacked earlier. Not a great time to go back to the car, just before the major launch point, but Pederson was back there as well with the flat so got away with it.
    I don't mind the others in the lead group giving him small turns as although they were helping Remco they have more chance of beating him than they do of winning if it regroups and they have MVDP, WVA, Pederson, Alaphilippe etc. to worry about also.

Then they also got Jorgenson in the group and really should have been able to stay away. I haven't seen the video and am only going by Chris's description, but my guess is Wout was really just marking Van der Pol with his teammate Remco up the road. He may have taken pulls, but probably was not working hard enough to make their break succeed. Van der Pol might have been strong enough to chase down Remco, but he would be giving Wout a free ride, leaving him with more in the tank for a sprint finish. Alaphilippe was probably doing the same because Van der Pol was the biggest threat to Remco and his French teammate up the road. Laporte probably was marking Jorgenson because again, he had his French teammate up the road. It sounds like he didn't work as hard and had more in the tank to sprint for third. It's just teamwork. Pedersen could have helped Van der Pol, but as Chris noted he probably burned all his matches chasing back after his flat. Even if he had more in the tank, Alaphillipe and Wout might have been sprinting for gold. Guess I gotta go watch the video.

To attack a spent Mathieu Vanderpoel, with legs full of energy, knowing that you have an "A " lister pit bull like Wout Van Aert to choke out any followers worked perfectly at that point in the race. Remco of course could get anyone in the lead group with any medal hopes to work for him, especially when inspirational desires supersedes common sense.
