@@dannyjohnsonsgarage Hey I'm Mike and I have 2 Ford Lightnings swapping my charger casings because my one is ported and Polished and my trucks computer has a tune ,thd other is a 2002 Ford Lightning with 36k miles, Supercharger rotors into my other forward lighting supercharger casing that happens to be ported and polished they are the same im guessimg.?? year I just put new needle bearings in my casing and put it all back together with the low mile rotors in the ported & polished casing because they were like new. Since the first start there was no noise for a while then it started to have an almost grinding or growling noise but now it got louder and I'm not sure if its norma because i was told that the bearings may have to ceet and that the noise would most likely go away after break-in... Now I finished this supercharger a few days ago and I haven't had a chance to drive it and break it in because I'm still building other parts of the truck..The problem is that it has moved back in fourth in my driveway a few times, And I had the supercharger belt hooked up so it was spinning and got warm a few times.. I'm hearing a noise and I'm almost sure definitely is some kind of metal inside actually maybe like a shearing noise..Oh I replaced the coupler also..So the front snout has 36k miles and the bearings didn't seem to have any play in them or the front pulley side either from what I could see wasn't not loose at all... the weird part is I have a stethoscope to the supercharger front back and middle and I can't really tell where it's coming from exactly it doesn't sound like it's coming from the supercharger until you're listening in front of the truck with the hood up.. I removed the belt off the supercharger and hit the gas pedal and the motor revs and the supercharger spins with a nice force if I hold the pulley it will actually make it spin out of my hand just from hitting the throttle.. I was just wondering since you're familiar if youd have any ideas off the top your head without hearing it..?.. But either way I will send you s video if you want of it running so you can hear what I'm talking about I just thought of writing you when I came in the house disgusted..lol.. I Noticed when I pressed the bearings in the casing that they set a little deeper than flush is that normal? And if so how much does it matter if it's Exactly flush or all the way down and bottomed out ?? Hey I just wanted to say thanks again for all the help and I really appreciate this information..

Great video, lots of good information. I had a '97 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP with a 3.8L V6 with a Eaton supercharger on it. The first couple of mods I did were a cold air intake and more free flowing exhaust. The first thing I saw was a drop in low end torque just as you suggested. I wasn't thrilled with losing that little bit of low end torque even though I was increasing HP slightly. However, after I put on a smaller supercharger pulley, I got back all of the low end torque plus a very significant increase.

Great video, i would of just ran out and got a pro-charger, but now looking at how the positive superchargers add instant boost I've reconsidered.
I remember back in 67 I had a Chevy 283/301 with a stroker kit, Chrome molly pistons perfect circle rings federal mogul bearings, TRW Lifters, Milled and ported head, straight up flame throwers, and a Bendix (do they still make them) roots supercharger w/ duathermoquads. it was all fed into a muncy four speed and a 4:11 rear. It had only about 500 BHP at the back wheels. It was nice when gas was cheap.

Nice video! I had an 87GT with a vortech s trim, a 95 with a turbo, and I'm about to procharge a 2016. I am considering a whipple as well. It's amazing the videos on RUclips. Especially when people actually know what they are talking about. People don't realize all a motor is, is an air pump. It's volumetric efficiency can only be so good and can only pull so much air. By forcing air and fuel in, we can create a bigger bang and hence more ponies. I like how you explained the aftermarket exhaust would lower boost. Any mod we do to increase the efficiency of the motor will lower boost at the same pulley sizes. Heads, cams, intakes, throttle bodies (after the blower) etc. all increase the efficiency of air flow and lower boost. However does not mean less power.
+Ian Muller I agree. So many people only look at cylinder displacement and don't understand that a blower, better heads, etc are all crucial components that are just as important when making power.

That was a damn good video. I like to watch these types as a refresher. I have to tell you that very few people went over some of the details discussed here. Especially about the boost difference between smaller and larger displacement engines and the overall explanation of boost as a concept of atmospheric pressure. You just earned a new subscriber.

I had a Civic Si with an aftermarket Roots supercharger kit ( new fuel injectors, new injection and spark maps, new clutch and new exhaust headers/pipes included. There was an increase in horsepower from 200HP to 320! An amazing performer!!

The big difference between twin screw and a roots is a twin screw compresses the air internally within the supercharger case whereas a roots is just a air pump (just like a fuel or oil pump) and doesn't compress air, boost comes from packing air into the intake manifold.

Great info some fools brag on boost pressure. That’s no a bragging point sometimes.
I have a 2015 GT 5.0L Convertible Automatic and I want to boost it for daily driving.
It's nice to blow away all challengers except the occasional Hellcat. So what type of S/C would be best? I don't beat the shit out of the car all the time, just occasionally when a challenger wants to see what she will do. A Whipple 2.9? What engine mods should I make so I don't blow it up? Steel gears, oil pump? What about lowering the stock compression a little? I run 93 non-ethanol continuously, never used anything else. Run Ford full synthetic too.
Any thoughts please?

Nice job, well done. I think at the end you looking for "volume" of air in the intake manifold produced by each revolution of the blower. so smaller intake volume is crammed with the same volume of air each blower rpm resulting in higher intake manifold pressure. I knew what you meant. Something I had not considered was the headers lowering boost. Totally makes sense but I don't have a boost gauge to watch on my Riviera. lol I have faster cars but it's the only one with a blower. Also, watched lots of cars at the track and there was a LT1 Camaro like I had at the time. it was auto and mine stick but either way. I could tell I could out 60' him and maybe hold him to the 8th mile because it was not noticeable faster than other stock lt1 auto car out of the hole. Then is sounded like around 4500 I'd guess it started pulling hard and was really moving hard like you wanted to se from a supercharged car...... and then it shifted, killed boost, start over. Was terrible. About not worth doing imo. I can't recall what it ran but think it was high 12 or low 13. OH, I almost forgot it had a centrifugal s/c. I always thought a manual trans car would be much better suited to that type of s/c. I wonder if you can drive them faster and get the boost earlier but blow off what you don't need as rpm increase?

I wonder if you've heard of placing a clutch on a supercharger similar to the way an air conditioner turns on and off. I want my 1.4 chevy engine to forever get away from turbos. Any ideas?

One question which seems to escape the internet, is how much horsepower does each "type" of supercharger require to make similar boost? What RPM's to achieve this boost? Or better yet which type of blower is best used for low RPM torque? If you add methanol injection can you achieve an efficiency close to a turbo?
+beauknowz yes, it's a little hard to calculate other than from the manufacture, but the best way to tell is when you dyno the car. You'll know how much power it makes and can see the end result of each blower and figure which is more efficient. The positive displacement blower will be best for low end power as its platform gives you instant power unlike a centrifugal or turbo
If you want to see forced induction technology at its peak research Mercury Marine Racing Engines. Truly incredible designs. To sustain anywhere from 5500-7000 RPM's in an ocean environment with the motor & boat continually jumping in an out of the water loading and loading the prop and engine, and not cannibalize under that type of stress is an incredible feat of engineering. and they all use positive displacement blowers, preferably the screw types (Whipple).

When using a positive displacement supercharger, more engine speed equals more airflow and not necessarily more boost pressure. this is an important point.

Then there are the new CVT style Supercharger's that adjust the ratio's on the fly of the poly to the engine RPM for optimal boost at almost any RPM. See Procharger i1 :-)

The i1 has the ability to shift the ratio of its CVT belt so there is essentially, no lag. At the end of the day it's belt driven and CVT optimized. Read about it.

It will suffer under heavy loads or demands as does the CVT trans do in cars. I think a blow off valve will help to regulate pressure as did does in turbo charging
The wastegate is the primary pressure regulator for a turbocharger, not the blow off valve. Using a bypass or blow off valve to relieve air pressure for an air mass you've already pumped and heated ends up being less efficient that just avoiding pumping excess air through a compressor in the first place, thus why turbocharged vehicles tend to retain high fuel economy and why you don't see any factory centrifugal superchargers. For normal centrifugal superchargers they don't have much choice but to use a blow off valve for pressure regulation. Positive displacement superchargers also use internal bypass valves to avoid paying too much of an efficiency penalty out of boost.
CVT centrifugal sounds interesting but it also seems like a complex, reliability-killing, expensive bandaid given how newer positive displacement superchargers have caught up on efficiency and modern electronics and DI have cut lag on turbos.
the way you described the rotation of the screws means discharge in at the top and suction is at the bottom which does not make sense since the engine is below the supercharger
The supercharger displaces airflow into the intake manifold, and then into the engine. Depending on the design of the supercharger and intake manifold, air may flow “up” as it makes its way around the supercharger case (roots) or even up through the intake manifold runners after passing through the intercooler. Also, the new supercharger like on the 2020 GT500 is inverted
I used to think I wanted a supercharged engine until I drove n/a cars for a while and realized 99.9% of the time you're high enough in the rpms to benefit from a turbo much more on the cars I like to drive and then having drove both I own a turbo car because it makes its power across a huge rpm range and doesn't fall on its face above 4 grand like most supercharged engines
Newer superchargers don’t fall of at higher rpm. Turbos are best for automatic transmission cars. What I didn’t like about the Subaru I drove was it felt like someone else was reaching over and stepping on the gas pedal without me wanting that once the turbo came on at 2,500rpm. I constantly had to drive lower or always higher to keep it in boost or out of boost. Not a fan.

With equal generation and performance roots vs twin screw blowers you don't notice any difference between the two. They are both positive displacement design and function the same in that regard. No spooling delay.
Which would be better to use on a 2004 Mach 1 automatic daily; turbo, procharge or pulley supercharger?
Alejandro Rojas I would say a turbo. Less issues with the front drive belt. Also, turbos are great with autos and even better with a Trans brake

Well, I'd say a positive displacement would be more fun as a daily since you don't have to push it hard to get boost. Instant power at any rpm

Danny, I have an older Eaton m65. I am wondering if it needs to be rebuilt. It makes a subtle grinding noise when I turn the pulley by hand. Do you know if this is a normal sound? Should a good supercharger be butter smooth and quite or is it normal to have some grinding sound?
It should be very smooth. I would imagine the rotors are slightly coming into contact.

Very informative thank you. I just got a 2016 mustang gt and am trying decide between the Roush stage 2 and the Whipple supercharger. Seems like the Whipple is the better choice from a performance standpoint but the Roush has a Ford factory warranty. Still undecided!
Both will be good blowers. With the newer 5.0s having high compression you won't need to run a lot of boost to make big power
In Australia we are getting ~520hp at the wheels with a 1.9l Harrop on a Coyote block @8psi. Love em hey! No intercooling either.
+mercury bullet yeah, some of the aftermarket kits don't even use an intercooler because the charge temps are low enough. In a way it's good that the Cobras were using the hotter eaton because now I have a more efficient whipple and it will even run better. The new roots style are better with heat too
Ours is an oem setup for the FGX Falcon. FPV spent $40 million on the design. Codenamed Miami (as opposed to a Coyote) if you want to look it up.
one question i have a jaguar s type r which i believe has eaton m112 so i wondering if i can do upgrade or use 2 screws supercharger ,,, or how can i make it a little louder without major upgrades
Carlos Sosa porting and using a smaller pulley will make it louder. Yes, I believe someone else in these comments went to a Whipple twin screw supercharger. You can't change your eaton itself to be a twin screw, but you can replace it with a twin screw supercharger

Carlos Sosa yes, smaller supercharger pullies are VERY common on the cobra m112 cars and have very few problems from it. It's common to see 2.93 and 2.76 pullies on Cobras all day. My Whipple twin screw is a 3"

I WAS gonna go with Procharger, but I don't want a centrifugal supercharger. I want instant power as soon as I hit the gas pedal. Now, I'll get a Whipple supercharger. But, Procharger is still great.
+George GMC Sierra Denali great.yes, I like the positive displacement blowers better for that reason too. I feel you can't extract the full potential of a centri or a turbo without running an extreme fuel setup. Positive displacements are much more fun IMO

so in a smaller engine we can get boost even with a small turbo and with manifolds small diameter?
The Rider yes. It doesn't take as much airflow to fill a smaller area.
i don't think that changes 30psi being 30psi... 2.5 liter getting 200% gain... same turbo or supercharger on a 5.0 yeah only gets 15psi and is getting 100% gain.. but if the 5.0 has two of those turbos 30psi and 200% so i'm not sure how we have to interrupt the 30psi any different... since the smaller engine also needs less air... Hypothetical gains of course.

If you install the same forced induction system on a 5.0 engine as you have on a 2.5, you won't get half the boost, you'll get 1/4 the boost. Also, everything else being equal, they should make the same power. In reality, they won't. Which one will make the most power, depends on a number of things.
