‘This is the ‘top’ of Drew’s backswing’… Drew does a great job articulating this concept. I’ve seen this on Catalyst myself and heard AMG and others discuss this early ‘end’ of the back swing but seeing Drew do it is the best explanation I’ve see…
Yep. Golf is much more dynamic, and athletic than people think. The weight that you feel in your legs, and feet are actually “braking” mechanisms, that keep you “centered”. Think about it…. As you sling the club back, you’ll feel pressure in your right foot, keeping you centered. That right foot braking force automatically sends the pressure to your left foot(this happens before you reach the top of your backswing). Then…. when your pressure is left, and the club is moving left, you’ll apply the brakes with your left foot(or leg). This dynamic motion provides tons of power, and if you can do it while staying “centered”, the strike will also be perfect. Great, great video. Love it.
Sounds like a great description of à great swing Jamie. Not just à casual swing in either direction. Do you know of any videos of the left leg breaking action ?
@@jmack619 Not right off hand, I don’t. But, just type it in, and I’m sure you’ll find several good videos about posting up, or left side extension. I actually need to do a better job of it myself. I tend to “slide” my left hip forward, and not rotate my left hip “back” enough.

Drew says something interesting when he's talking about his pressure pattern: The second 'right' in his 'left, right, left, right' as he's describing his motion. I've noticed that this second spike in pressure in the trail foot also shows up in Dr. Kwon's graphics. In Grant Waite's animation on his site the pressure increases in the trail foot at about left arm parallel on the downswing. Most recreational golfers would assume that all the pressure would be in the lead side at this point. I'd be curious to hear Dr. Kwon's thoughts on this. Thanks for the great content!
I'm not Dr. Kwon, but this is like snapping a towel. The body has to slow down in order for the arms to speed up, and then the arms have to slow down in order for the clubhead to speed up. If you watch a slow-motion video of Rory McIlroy hitting a driver you will actually see his hip turn reverse direction right before the clubhead strikes the ball; it literally moves backwards.
To my own detriment I have been a very "position" oriented golfer. The content about making a 40 yard backswing for a 170 yard target really hit me. So often I am worried about where the club is, and it takes away from what my body needs to do in order to make an effective swing through the hitting zone.
I love Drew's content, more videos of Drew~! little more explanation of braking point and how to smoothly transition to downswing from top of backswing, thank you.
Best explanation of the golf swing. I added 10% speed by simply using the backswing technique explained here, within 20 shots on the range. Brilliant. The secret is really that the swing is like bouncing a ball. You can just throw a tennis ball into the air, but it goes a lot further if you actually throw it in the opposite direction first and make it compress and release. The ball in this is not representing the golf club. It's the body. You throw the body round backwards then use the "bounce" to launch it forwards. The club is just attached. That's why Drew just turns backwards violently for a moment, tries to brake, and then allows himself to bounce in the forwards direction whilst controlling the club.
Yes!!! You opened it! I was a little confused trying to thinks this trough on my own. I guess the hopping before loading makes it easier to load back...reminded me about some sports as a kid.
Dr Scott Lynn showed me thee "backswing is actually done the instant the club starts moving" it is a weird concept but makes sense when you see the force vector arrows. there isn't actually a backswing for dynamic swingers. it is all the same direction.
Rory mentioned in his video with the Four Play guys that taking the club back quickly is one of the things that allows him to bomb drives. Of course you have to do it without screwing up your mechanics (assuming they're correct in the first place).
Teaching back in the 90’s was all about positions and crossing the arms. Myself among other students of the game got really good positionswise, but it wasn’t untill early 2000’s I realized, I had been tought a swing look-a-like instead of the dynamic motion starting right at the take away.
Great video! this gave me a eureka moment with striking the golfball. I was so bad, but after this, my swing felt effortless and my avarage distance almost doubled.
A great explanation about stretch, and why women have fast hips but less distance. When I go wrong (swinging for distance) I spin out, because I haven't transferred the energy back into my hands/arms
I admit being a total fool thinking I can watch every damned video on distance thinking can add 30 yards. My swing coach had me address the ball in the last lesson. He then told me I was far too close to the ball, so I slid back a few inches......he then said no...I meant after you hit it. My longest balls are usually a sandwedge bladed in a bunker. But here I am...consumate optimist
I was wondering the same. Also the 100k subs acknowledgement (or maybe I missed that). And a recap of where Brendon's game is at would be good. I mean, surely he's worked out his optimum technique by now..? This Dr Kwon 'flow' stuff doesn't seem to mean much to me tbh.

Great points. Your comment about positions as well, I think it stems from that we cannot measure intentions, so golf instruction just copied positions, i.e the result of intentions.
A fast backswing doesn’t give you much, what you want is to come down very quickly with your shoulders and arms through the ball. I can swing just as quick without a backswing at all just holding it from the top
Interestingly, at impact, Justin Thomas has 93% of his total force on his right leg and only 7% on his left leg. Scott Stallings is similar … 90% on his right foot and 10% on his left. Drew demonstrates that concept when he talked about right at the start, left as he’s nearing the top, and then right back at impact. Good stuff!
Hmm...Not sure about that. Can you link quantifiable data? Pros tend to shift weight distribution from right heel to left toe before downswing is initiated. Sure, someone like JT uses a ton of groundforce by pushing up with both feet. But they definitely shift their weight forwards and up so not sure what you mean by 'total force'?
Im about to bring a technology to the market that we use on Space rockets, it can be applied to your club and add 10-15% more distance and lower back spin. Ill give you a clue to how it works. Its easier to make the club work better than get stronger in your swing. Its patented, coming soon
I enjoy the vids, but it would be a tad more instructive if you had the shot tracer to show WHERE the ball is really going - how high, and the curve if any.
Hello Brendon. I really enjoyed the Jan class with Dr Kwon that I attended and recommend everyone to consider attending one of his instructional classes. I have a request, based on what Drew Cooper stated at the end of the video about hands have to be strong enough in order to have a fast/powerful swing. I also have heard, from various online golf resources, that a golf swing can only be as fast/powerful as you can brake. What exercises does Drew recommend so an aging golfer can extend the life of their swing speed? What exercises can be utilized to allow the energy from ground to grip me more efficient? How can you increase strength in hands to transmit it? Thank you !!
Drew uses a heavy hammer 🔨 and does some twisting and tilting exercises with it. He hurt his thumb in his first long drive event so now he really works on it. At the school we did drop squats. You just stand there then squat down FAST and then stop yourself at the bottom then come up slow. These were great.
@@BEBETTERGOLF Thanks !! Any way you can demonstrate the heavy hammer exercise? I have injured my thumb in the past as well, especially when my thumb is straight down the golf shaft.

Ok but how far is the green with the Red flag? How far did he hit that last 7 iron?
@@alexstarlow582 As a lefty shooting right, I also have a problem with right hand strength , combined with à Boney bump or growth in that wrist that impinges at the top of swing. Who says you can,t have it all : )
Fantastic 👍
How far did he hit the 7i?
Jon raum is an excellent example of this concept id say
7:39 I believe this is also how homerun hitters crush the ball.
It seems his downswing is over the top of his back swing.. something tiger and other top golfer are practicing in pre shot routines
With the rise in inflation this game will go spiralling downwards !
The best swing I've ever seen ........
The average golfer doesnt have his strength or flexibility let alone timing and technique...inspirational though and a humble dude..
Yank the handle to bend the club. My quickness is in all the wrong places. Time to take this thought to the range.
"Energy from ground to grip" interesting!
The start of the backswing like this is carried out by those of the World Longest Drive guys.
But to apply it in the golf course the accuracy of the shots is questionable.
You couldn't be more wrong. By throwing the club back yo the top I have zero position thoughts. Iy is much more natural and the flow is so much better
@@seds27 could you give me some names of the professional golfers in the tour that apply this technique in the golf course?
John Rahm. Ernie Els. The takeaway is thrown and fast
@@seds27 why Else is nick named the big easy? Because of his nice, wide and smooth swing which the nice and smooth takeaway is the essence part of it.
What's you current GHIN index?
Great
