The St Petersburg Tournament of 1914 featured the joint winners of the 1914 All Russian Championship and players who had won at least one major tournament. There were the veterans Blackburne and Gunsberg, established masters such as Tarrasch, Bernstein, Janowski, Nimzowitsch, Alekhine and Marshall as well as the World Champion Lasker and his two most prominent rivals, Rubinstein and Capablanca.
The tournament was divided into two sections. The first stage from the 21st April to the 6th of May was an all-play-all event with the first five finishers proceeding into the second stage which ran from the 10th to the 22nd of May. This second stage was a double round all-play-all with the scores from the preliminaries being carried over to the final.
Prizes amounted to 1200, 800, 500, 300 and 200 Rubles. Each non-prizewinner received 20 Rubles for every game won and 10 Rubles for every drawn game.
A brilliancy prize was being considered for Nimzowitsch vs Tarrasch, 1914 after the 5th round's finish, but more than 2 rounds later, it was awarded a 2nd brilliancy prize as the runner-up to the Capablanca vs O Bernstein, 1914 coup.
The main source for this collection was the St. Petersburg 1914 International Chess Tournament book by Dr Siegbert Tarrasch. ISBN 0-939433-17-6.

I have the tournament book. Tarrasch remarks upon 57...h5 only with:
"A mistake, upon which White wins a pawn and obtains a few winning chances."
In this edition (from Caissa Editions), the editor adds a few sample lines that lead to draws.
According to Tarrasch, it was Capablanca that offered the draw, even though Tarrasch made the final recorded move. He says:
"Broken off as a draw upon Black's suggestion. White now even stands somewhat better, for example, 59...Ke6 60.Re5+ Kd6 61.Rxg5 c3 62.Be5+ followed by Bxf4. But the player of the White side was already rather exhausted by the seven-hour struggle."

Watching Capablanca's games has greatly impacted how I play chess. Like Capablanca I play moves to get to an endgame and after watching his games and reading some endgame books I find I can offten win a lot of these end games I come across when I play chess online. Your Capablanca vedios have been helpful thankyou so much and keep up the good work.

10:30 -- Interesting move, as a5 isn't even among the lines considered by the engine (Stockfish10), which prefers various different pawn or rook moves with around a -1 score (with f5 favoring Black most) prior to a5 (after which the game becomes a more drawish -.03.)
10:47 -- That being the case, if White replies Bxa5?, then yes, he has blundered (and with Rxf2 as the best response), but he was not ahead in the position before this point. After the alternative bxa5, Rc2 (the played move by Capablanca, Black is only -0.32.
11:31 -- Rb4 is a blunder (what was Tarrasch hoping for?), with Black being a full point ahead again after c5. Better would have been h5, Kg2, or Rd1, all of which keep the game drawish.
12:45 -- Rg3 is suboptimal, as it merely provokes g5 (which the engine has been recommending for some time anyway); better are h4, Re3, or Kf1.
13:16 -- This was the last moment Tarrasch had to get his king into the game with Kf1, or to get the f-pawn out of harm's way via f3. Instead, he unnecessarily moves his bishop and invites the rook check that drives him back into the corner and removing defense of the f-pawn. Kg6 follows, Kg3 (preventing g4), Rd1, Bc3...and the bishop is right back where it started.
13:50 -- The real purpose of Bd5 is to prevent the White king from escaping the corner via Kg3.
13:58 -- Capablanca should have pushed f5 right here. With Rc1, Be4, Rc2, he permits Tarrasch to respond with Ra3! (where White's rook is now safely on a dark square defending the a-pawn, salvaging a theoretical draw out of a deteriorating position).
16:33 -- As analyzed above, the game is already drawish at this point. Rd2 would have been better, but Black is only -0.7 (by depth 35) after doing so. It's possible that Capablanca knew a draw was the most likely outcome anyway (the engine foresees a pawnless rook+bishop vs rook endgame after Rd2), and therefore hastened to secure it rather than afford Tarrasch any opportunity for brilliancy. As frequently noted elsewhere, Capablanca was a "lazy" player.

Your technology showing variations then coming back to main game lines in a click is cool/ ok now that I saw older Capa on photos I can imagine that he well wrote his own book, surely with the help of someone for assembling memories.
I think people in the early 20th century were much better educated in writing. I see a lot of young people's spelling and grammar is atrocious these days. It is likely that he wrote the book himself although there were publishers in those days that would help with proof reading and structural advice. Perhaps you could research his book to see who the publisher was and who did the various language translations. Perhaps it has acknowledgements for those that assisted Capablanca with the book, if anyone.
#suggestion Can we get a current standings perhaps? Or at least the top 3, or 5? I think that would have added even more intrigue to the San Sebastian, and will with this. So it's a suggestion, as in for anything like this going forward in the future.

At 6.52, I guessed the move to be g5? Seems pretty interesting it attacks the bishop in the same way the rook lift does only difference is you aren't pressuring whites pawn on the c file
This guys played at such a high level at that time. The only difference between them and contemporary players is the knowledged accumulated the last 100 years.

This would not be a draw by insufficient material because with opposite colour bishops it is possible to setup a checkmate (for example black Kh8, Bg8, white Kh6 Bf6). Insufficient material means there is no way to give checkmate with any sequence of valid moves

Great content...! Just my ocd talking.... but two opposite colored bishops is not an automatic draw by insufficient material...as there is a possible mate. Only same colored bishops result in impossibility of checkmate. Again... an insignificant detail.

Just after the 9:35 mark Why doesn't Capablanca just move the rook out of danger? R a2 or b2 or Rf6 or f4, basically anywhere but Rxg2 giving up the rook that you said he didn't want to trade?
