    Also, "we see you, opal" is the main lyric of the beginning family's song, and nobody in her real family actually 'sees' her. Blind, surrounded by mirrors, or clouded by substances, none of them really look at her.

    It’s also the fact that ‘Opal’ doesn’t dream about her family loving her, all she wants is to be seen. Which is so insanely depressing to only hope your family sees you, but doesn’t have to care or take care of you…

    • @ultrapowercat
      @ultrapowercat 8 месяцев назад +9

      I must say, I did not perceive it like that. I believed the reason she simply wanted to be seen is because that is what she assumes affection to be. This is slightly reflected in the musical number with the fake family. They say that they see Opal, and since they are made in Opal’s mind to be caring and loving, them seeing her, is what she perceives affection to be. Your idea is still a good theory.

      She wants to mostly because no one sees her. The grandfather is blind and only treats her as someone there to do what He wants, the dad is surrounded by mirrors and a narcissist that only looks at himself and the mom is too drunk or high to properly see her. She dreams to be seen because, both literally and figuratively, no one sees her

    I agree overall, but at the end I wouldn't say that she discovered that she was the daughter of the neglectful family, but actually about her no longing being able to keep the charade allowing us to discover that. Even her introduction scene is about her releasing the tension from her eyes entering the fantasy world with the family in the ad. Without the context of the story, this action lacks meaning and is easy to forget.

    It hits so close to home when all her imaginary family really said was "We see you", "There she is" or, "Hi, Opal"- not even an "I love you" or a "I'm proud of you". and seeing Claire literally fantasizing over her own grandfather saying "hi" to her unlocked some childhood memories that were... not fun to revisit. it really shows that Claire's real family is so incapable of love and compassion towards her that the peak of her ambitions is just to be acknowledged by her family members.
    It's genuinely mind boggling to me how Jack Stauber can convey so much trauma and emotion in these short films or musical numbers- especially the little details, such as how the drunk mom claimed that Claire was "A miracle", but appeared to try to beat her after. and the line, "You and I don't live, Claire. We Survive." genuinely sounds like something a drug addict would say. The other detail of the father shifting the mirrors away from Claire when she entered really shattered me, because that's what a lot of my family did to my little sister and I when we were in desperate need of comfort or attention. Something else I noticed was how clearly Claire looked up to "Opal" (The girl in the commercial)- even wearing similar clothes and styling her hair the same way- it shows how Claire admires the girl in the commercial and how badly she wants to be her.

    I just thought about something :(
    I think the beginning, when “Opal” was eating hamburgers with her family, but danced on the table instead, could mean a couple things.
    1 - She didn’t eat the hamburger because she didn’t *know how* since she’d probably never had a good dinner as a family back home.
    or
    2 - She danced on the table to try to seek praise or positive attention. This is because she doesn’t get much, if any, in her real household.

    • @cryptid18362
      @cryptid18362 10 месяцев назад +12

    I feel like I'm a vunerable narcissist and the concept of the dad has kind of made me question my own perception. I grew up in a traumatic upbringing and used escapism in my mind throughout it. I feel like i can relate to both Claire and her dad. The survival mechanics dealing with abuse, neglect and trauma bever have gone away for me and even with awareness, it seems hardwired in my brain to be that way.

    I adore how you put narcissism in the middle of trauma and neglect, implying that the narcissism is Opal/Claire's rather than the adults since her upbringing and fantasy of her family actually loving/appreciating her is literally how narcissistic personality disorder begins. That paired with the fact that her father, that she seems most comfortable around, also likely has it and NPD is usually a combination of both nature and nurture, would make the disorder tragically inevitable if she were a real person.

    The fact that it’s not her troubles that are miles away, it’s any HOPE of there being no troubles that’s miles away.
    It looks like they live in the middle of nowhere and the only times the adults of the house seem to ever go to town (or a gas station with a little store for road trips, at the very least) is in an emergency (they’re out of cigarettes, out of junk food, out of booze) or they get forced out of the house by police or taken in an ambulance).
    Not only do they deprive Claire and themselves from being properly fed, but also from life outside of that house where help would be accessible.
    It’s a startlingly common environment for kids to be growing up in, these days.🫤
    And that’s actually not even among the world’s worst ways a kid can be raised.
    It’s one OF the worst of what you can find in the majority of homes, but it’s not even close to the worst of the worst.

    Fun fact, the reason why she doesn’t eat the burger in the beginning is because she doesn’t know what to do with it because she hasn’t eaten in so long she probably forgot what eating

    If you pause the video at the right time (when opal’s face is in the mirror) you can see how the dad’s face is beat up which some people think is the mom’s fault because she apparently abused him causing him to sit in the room with the mirrors and fix his face

    Her name “opal” is the name she’s made for herself, it’s supposed to sound like “opaque”. While her real name “Claire” is supposed to sound like “clear”, implying that all she wants is to be seen.
    Her grandfather is ignoring her concerns about his smoking habits and tries distracting himself by focusing on the TV.
    Her dad doesn’t even look at her as he’s to obsessed with his own reflection. He constantly puts down Claire as a way to make him feel better about himself.
    Her mom is obviously an addict and alcoholic, constantly seeking validation from Claire. In her song she mentions wanting to be looked after by Claire, even though that’s what a mother should be doing.
    All of these points link to what the idealised version of her parents shes made up in her head say at the beginning.
    “hi Claire!”
    Is said by her grandpa since she wants her grandpa to listen to her.
    “Thatta girl!”
    Is what her father says because she wants him to compliment her instead of focusing on himself for once.
    “You can do it opal!”
    Is her mothers response, she wants her mom to be look after her and focus on her instead of it being the other way around.

      I used to volunteer at a foster care center with children that were pulled from their homes due to abuse, neglect, and drug raids.... one day we took 4 kids to McDonald's and one of them cried because they had never been to a McDonald's.. :( it's astounding the things we take for granted. Growing up my mom, a single working parent, would always bring McDonald's home... and I hated it because it was the same thing all the time. After seeing that boy cry for never having a McDonald's happy meal before really put it into perspective for me... I was a very privileged child and I didn't even know it...
