Jennifer Lopez interview in Spanish for film "Selena" - oddity humor practical joke during interview co-star Jon Seda behind Jennifer Lopez making hand gestures
That answer was definitely rehearsed before, cause I've watched her speaking Spanish in more recent interviews and she struggles much more to express herself and to be fluent. You can tell that she understands Spanish 100%, but speaking doesn't come out natural for her, she probably isn't used to it.
@@nadiapitarch5870 I mean, this interview was 20 years ago so it's possible that her Spanish was better back then when she wasn't as big and still surrounded by her latina family often. The less you lose a language, the more likely you are to lose it. My Spanish was also way better when I was younger but now I know English more since it became my primary language
I just watched an interview of her speaking Spanish and she lost the puerto rican accent, she speaks spanish like a white person now . This Spanish was way better , i can actually tell she is puerto rican here, she had the accent.
Interesting. It seems that in the decades since this interview, her Spanish has deteriorated. Probably because beck then she was recently living with her Puerto Rican family, but in her adult life she has been living and working primarily in an English setting. It just shows that adults can loose proficiency in their native language over time.
Alessandra Vivaldi As in she has an American accent when she speaks in Spanish (at least now she does - this interview was a long time ago when her Spanish was perfect and sounded like a native speaking)
Because this video was from awhile back, she lost her accent and when you grow up speaking Spanish and then living in the states, you start to forgot words in both languages and it never ends.
@@tayomatic Actually, she might. Selena didn't grow up being fluent in Spanish either, she learned as she became famous. Sure, she still heard it around the house, but that's not the same as using it. Lopez had to move in with Selena's family for several months to learn about her mannerisms and how to properly mime for her songs - I'm sure she picked up the Spanish from them. That's probably why she's so much better here. I still find it strange she was married to Marc for all those years and it didn't improve even after touring and doing albums in the language.
I always thought she grew up in a Spanish speaking household... I'm confused. My boyfriend is from the Bronx too, he's Dominican, and his mom doesn't speak good English so he grew up speaking Spanish and still speaks it well. This seems just odd. She doesn't seem like she stays in touch with her roots. 🤔
No matter what Jennifer does people criticize her. She admits English was what she spoke growing up. She is doing her best and communicates well, I think. Maybe commend her for trying and doing the interview in Spanish. Marc Anthony, I think, grew up speaking more Spanish and I have seen him struggle at times. It is true you lose it if you do not use it. I took many years of Spanish in high school and in college, but since then have not used it. I still understand very well but have a very hard time speaking it.
I've never quite been bilingual (English/German), but it's true that sometimes when you grow up with two cultures and two languages, you feel like something's missing. I've known about people who felt that way growing up in the UK or US. When they went back to their other home, things clicked into place more.
She is clearly not a native speaker, but her Spanish was really fluent back in the day. As a Spanish teacher I can see some mistakes like 1:23 she says "los fans lo iban a disfrutarlo..." so double "lo" and that kind of things, but she sounded pretty fluent!

Many people are wondering, so I will attempt to analyze... In this video Jennifer speaks Spanish pretty well, with only one grammatical error. Her vocabulary is sufficient for the conversation, but the video is not long enough to see how deep her lexical knowledge actually is. Nevertheless, it is clear that she speaks better than the vast majority of gringos who learn Spanish as a foreign language, and also better than most second generation Latinos born and raised in the United States. Her accent, informal/playful discourse style, and pace of speech are more native-sounding than typical people who learn a language in adulthood, suggesting that she acquired some of the language at a young age. However, she is not as good as the vast majority of people who were born and raised in a Spanish-speaking country. So she is somewhere in the middle, a fairly fluent heritage language speaker. Based on her background and proficiency, I guess that her language environment as a child was something like this: 1. Her parents spoke mostly Spanish to their parents (her grandparents), a mix of Spanish and English to each other, and mostly English to JLo and her siblings. 2. Her grandparents probably spoke more Spanish to her, with some English 3. JLo and her siblings spoke English to each other. 4. She heard Spanish being spoken in her neighbourhood and by some of her friends with their families. 5. She had relatives in Puerto Rico who spoke Spanish 100%, but they visited intermittently. 6. She may have took Spanish as a subject in school to get an easy A. 7. She was exposed to a lot of Spanish music and some Spanish media (radio, television). 8. She understood Spanish well but did not speak it often except when obliged. As she has aged, the Spanish influence of her childhood environment has waned, although she has become alternatively exposed to Spanish thru (some) romantic partners, travelling to Latin America, collaborating with Latinos from other countries, and making some content in Spanish (music and limited bilingual movies). At the same time, she has spent a lot of time in English environments, making more English music and movies, dating some native English-speaking men, and raising English-dominant children. Therefore, changes to her Spanish accent, lexicon, and fluency are not surprising. These are my educated hypotheses, but you will have to ask Jennifer to confirm! 🤓😇
As a fluent native speaker I honestly think her Spanish is better now. She had the accent back then of course because she probably realized for her career it was going to be beneficial but she clearly didn’t grow up speaking it.
