However, a video recently went viral of Jenna Ortega and Anya Taylor-Joy speaking Spanish to friends. Anya is clearly fluent, but Jenna is not. I don't know if it's just me but, as a latino (brazilian), watching american content on RUclips and listening to phrases like "i'm to white for that" or "she seems pretty white" makes me thing that people in the US believe that you can't be white and latino at the same time haha. Nothing against Brett, i really like her content, it just got me thing about you guys perspective on this.

The "I'm too white" comments every time someone tries to speak spanish (mostly, sometimes also about br-pt) is so freaking annoying as a Portuguese person. There's an entire country of european white people that speaks perfect spanish!
@@FranciscoJavier246 Tbh when I think of people in the Southern parts of Latin America (e.g. Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, etc.), I think white.
The problem is most Americans think of Mexico when they think of Latinos, and I've heard from Mexicans themselves that they view white Mexicans differently.
As a peruvian, living in Peru, I feel closer to Anya. When you listen to her you feel something familiar, I feel like we could speak about common experiences and share similar cultural codes, that's completely different to Jenna. Beeing Latino is not only sharing a language but cultural codes as well. Being Latino is not racial at all, you could be white as a Sweden or black as a subsaharian african and be equally Latin.

@@oscarolvera9069 Exactly, there are over 60 millions latinos in the US and those who are born here/come very young go through a different experience. When they back to their home country they are made fun because their Spanish isn't perfect and here they are asked "where are you from?" implying that they are not from here. Uno crece como ese sentir que no es de aqui ni de alla and at the end it branches out into a different latino experience igual que un Mexicano en Mexico or un Argentino en Argentina, un Dominicano en Republica Dominicana. US latinos create their own identity as well.

Born and raised in Brazil, I speak both Portuguese and Spanish and must say that the language is a fundamental part of being immerse in a culture. I do not think that Jenna and Rachel have had a true Latin experience if they’ve always lived in the US and don’t understand the language, it does not matter how many Latin family members they are surrounded by. With the language comes music, popular culture, sayings, expressions, jokes… that help build a country’s identity. You even think differently in different languages.
Do you know what colonization is? As someone who is from the state of New Mexico where it’s majority Hispanic state most of us don’t speak Spanish especially the younger generation. This is because we became a state in 1912. And when we did become a state we literally got segregated and looked down on by other states for not speaking English so many young people don’t speak Spanish. We have a RICH culture in New Mexico that is very “Latino” & both those who speak Spanish and English take part in that culture. I recommend you visiting Santa Fe some time.
@@Lizardtheblizard I don’t think this the case of neither Jenna nor Rachel as they from California and Jersey and not even third generation. My great grandparents were French and German and that does not make me part of European culture. Its such a STRECH. Also I’m sure your culture is very rich in Santa Fe, and not less than ours, but it has been changed and there fore is a different culture. Language will ALWAYS be one of the main pillars of any culture.

@lizardtheblizars that’s exactly my grandfathers experience! Either they were going to be “too native” or “too Mexican” and each was absolutely dangerous. When he came back from Europe after world war 2 he still got SO much racism despite half of his family being native to the land (mestizo, half Spanish half native. The Spanish side was in New Mexico since the 1500s). He decided it was going to be easier for his kids if they just learned English.
This is a common latin-American experience. It’s crazy all of these people coming from other countries commenting on a specific Latino-American experience.
I’m mexican, I don’t just happen to feel represented by Jenna nor Anya nor do I freaking need to.
We can connect and empathize with others regardless of gender, ethnicity, skin color etc. like we’ve been doing that forever until wokness started to make it such a big issue.

I’ve never once in my life been like “oh wow I feel so represented bc of that Latina character” it’s different for everyone but I don’t think representation is as important as they say it is
tbh i kinda have. When i was below age 12 no because i was a little kid and didnt care about what race people were. But i remember being 14 and seeing Stuck in the middle on disney channel and being happy that they actually showed a different race other than black or white.
I feel that way towards other races tho, not just latinos bc im sick of tv just being black and white americans

I think it’s more showing a POC expressing their culture. Craig of the creek showed Filipino kid having dinner with their family sharing Filipino food and talking in Filipino. It feels good seeing representation of your own culture and make you relate to it more.

As Argentinians, Anya makes us proud, not only for her constant affection for our country, for our Spanish-speaking culture, but also for her humility and friendliness. I like to believe that this has a lot to do with its true multi-cultural nature; and not posturing like others.😏

What Americans and some others need to understand is for us Latin Americans the concept of "latino" is different. It's not you having latino parents, it's being raised in a Latin American country. That's the only way you can completely understand what Latin America is and thus what being latino is

This is very case by case because as someone also born in Miami (where the population is mainly Latinos and Hispanics) ur comment is not valid to many kids who are born from Hispanic parents. These kids grow up speaking spanish and are immersed in their culture despite being US citizens.
@@fresitafawn As we say in my country "The Argentine is born where he or she wants" which means that you don't have to be born here to be one of us, if you know our language, country and our culture, which Anya does, then you are our brother/sister.
Messi was born in Argentina and grew up here but he went when he was a child to Spain and stayed there while he grew up, that doesn't make him any less Argentinian. For Messi and Anya, no matter where they are, Argentina continues to be a home.
In fact, they come here when they can since their families live here. And although Anya also grew up in the UK, she retains her Argentine accent because that was her first language. She can be Argentine and British at the same time. Not all people identify themselves or have had a life only in one country. There are people who have the right to have a diverse origin and Anya has it.

I'm Argentinian. I met Anya because I crossed paths with her on the streets last time she was here. She's so humble and she's as Argentinian as Messi, Maradona, Dulce de leche and Asado.
The thing I LOVE about Anya (as an Argentinian myself) is that she doesn't FORCE IT. She seems a lot more relaxed and authentic. I feel like in the US the "conversation" is just telling them what they want to hear about what latin American people look like or do. So that's why they are more prone to claim that Jenna is a "latina" without even questioning it. I've had my "argentinianness" questioned while traveling in Miami because I'm too white and speak English too well, which just tells you there are heavy preconceived notions of what a latina looks like.
Definitely!!! I live in the Dominican Republic and even in this one country alone you’ve got every single shade of skin colour, hair colour, hair type, stature, eyes, etc. there is no set way that Latinos look! And all the Argentinian people I’ve met have been just as white as me haha.

It's probably because Ortega's been told to go around everywhere to the press representing Hollywood's feeble attempts at diversity whilst Taylor-Joy's probably been told to keep her mouth shut cause Ortega looks more Latina than Taylor-Joy. Looks are all that Hollywood needs to fulfill its diversity quota after all, people's original culture and heritage be damned.

I don't even consider that Latin culture exists, each country is a different world: Mexico is a completely different culture than Colombia. I can assure you that only within Colombia there are completely different cultures, now that we are united by certain similarities between countries, it is something else but it is like saying that Australia, the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States just because they share the same thing. the language has the same culture psss couldn't be further from the truth; The only thing that unites us are the economic and social problems of the countries.

Exactly my friend, I am Argentine, our Uruguayan neighbors have a culture similar to ours, but other Latin American countries, the only cultural similarity they have is the language, the rest has nothing to do with it.

You don’t have to speak Spanish and you don’t have to be immersed in the culture but don’t claim to be a representative for that culture if you don’t live that culture or have any connection other than “my great grandma” came from X… just be proud and that’s it. No need to proclaim your self to something you’re not.
This seems to be the main issue with Americans, they all go "my great great great grandma was X, so this makes me like 1% X, so this makes me totally X". You'll never hear people from Europe, Asia or Africa say they are "3% European\Asian\African". You are either Russian, German, Japanese, Indian, Ethiopian, etc or not.
I agree with you. It's just that the way things are here in the States, if you're white looking of European heritage, particularly more so northern European, by the first generation you can be simply be referred as American. Everyone else who has other physical characteristics, your family could be here for two three four generations and you're going to be a hyphenated American. If Jenna were of Scottish descent, she would never have to claim any heritage (she could out of choice), but "people of color" can never be just American so she feels probably that she has to claim something. It's a weird position to be in, because for those of us who are very connected to our Latin American heritage the only relatable thing about some "Latinos" is the last name and appearance (sometimes).

I like her music a lot and she's so talented, but she only has used the Latino card when an album in Spanish was strategically in the way, in 2000 during the Latino boom and in 2022 since urbano singers like Rosalía, Bad Bunny, Maluma, Karol G, etc., have become very popular in the US. I understand that she probably doesn't have a connection with the Ecuadorian culture because her father was abusive to her and her mom when growing up, which makes me feel ashamed. As far as I know, Christina has been to Ecuador maybe a couple of times (or at least once) but just for non-music related reasons, and therefore they have been very private, which is ironic since she has given shows in other Latin American countries like Venezuela. I still love her music and the most Ecuadorian thing she has ever made is the song "No es que te extrañe", I get gooseflesh every time I listen to that song
No, it's not that Anya Taylor-Joy just speaks Spanish. She does it exceptionally well, to the point you can't believe she's also fluent in English, because Spanish sounds like her native language. I'm from Argentina, and I'm telling you: people who aren't native Spanish speakers, sadly, will never appreciate how good her Spanish is. On top of that, she has a perfect Argentine accent, which is kinda mind blowing.

I know sometimes (very rare) she says something wrong or in the wrong way, but even my brother who moved to France does that now when speaking in portuguese. This is common to happen to those who move to another country even if they were used to speak their mother language for years.

I've got Scots and German heritage. I speak neither language, but I don't go on and on about it all the time, so nobody thinks I'm a hypocrite. I certainly don't think the woman is required to speak the language to have a cultural connection, but perhaps not putting yourself in situations that make you look hypocritical would be a good idea.

Exactly! I’m half rican & half Italian. I just about grew up between here and PR. I don’t speak Italian or Spanish. Neither do my siblings. I have a cultural connection to both. However, first and foremost, I’m an American & my ethnicity is not all of me.
My little brother is Latino (Nobody else in the family is) and he doesn't speak a lick of Spanish. He's aware of some things in Spanish culture but has never felt the need to fully connect to the culture itself because it's not the culture he was raised in and that's okay. He doesn't try to pretend to be something he isn't and no one wants him to be.

I am tired of people victimizing themselves for being "latinos/as" when they grew up going back and forth from their mansion and some beach in Florida. Like, I'm sorry, no, you are not a victim. As a white "Latino" I feel incredibly underrepresented in the media. You don't see white hispanics represented anywhere. In American movies, commercials, etc- the characters/actors are always brown/ish. On another note, I'm Uruguayan and speak with the same accent as Anya. Other hispanics have a hard time understanding Rioplatense Spanish. Especially if they're not native Spanish speakers.
In Argentina we love anya so much bc we see the love and massive respect she has for our country, she has never used the "latinxxxxxsgd" etiquette for anything, and still she just shows how big is the impact that Argentina has in her life, Rachel and jenna are the same people that for years try to get attention for being "latinx", even Rachel who has a colombian mom, everytime she tries to speak Spanish she does it with a Puerto rican accent that she probably learned from west side story.

I am a latina who was born America, my first language was Spanish. Growing up, I honestly never felt "unrepresented". Sure, when I see a latino actor in american shows or movies I get excited but I never saw it as an issue or felt opressed. I never paid attention to the race or color of the person. People just want to make it an issue... my community has a good amount of movies and shows with hispanic actors.
Same I grew up in California & Spanish was my primary language my mom always said in this house you speak Spanish when you’re with friends it’s English

Yes 100% Also, we have our own TV series, movies, music etc in the countries our parents came from (mexico, central and south amereica). What more "representation" do we need. I grew up watching Univision and Telemundo. Loved watching novelas. I also grew up watching "American tv" and never felt unrepresented. Like my mom always says, I represent myself and do not need others to do that for me.

I can only speak for myself. My parents are from Puerto Rico. They taught me Spanish. When I reached adulthood, I noticed I was not speaking it as well as I'd liked. I also got comments from other Latinos that my Spanish was not great, or that I spoke too much Spanglish. I worked my butt off to improve my Spanish. At one point I spent over 2 years only watching Spanish television programs at home. I sat in front of the T.V. with a pen and paper and a dictionary writing down all of the words and phrases I did not understand. This was before high speed internet and RUclips. Sometimes I had to call my mom and ask her what certain words meant. I had notebooks full of notes and I would read them every night. My Spanish now is very good but I never stop practicing and trying to learn new words. If you really want to, you can learn it.
As a Uruguayan, I feel more represented with Anya, she speaks Rioplatense Spanish perfectly, she lived in LATAM, knows the culture, loves dulce de leche and empanadas lol, etc... and the girl is not victimizing herself or saying that she is Latina every 5 minutes. 😂❤

True story. I didn’t want to learn Spanish when I was a kid. I would always speak to my mom and mom was fine with it but she also wanted me to speak Spanish around her and my dad so I would learn and use it more so I can be more proficient in it. I refused to do so and she hated that. So one day I arrive to the kitchen to ask what’s for dinner. She didn’t answer me. I kept asking and asking no one would answer me( my dad was also not responding). She kept ignoring me until I asked her again but Spanish. She pointed to the chair in the kitchen and said “sit down”. She said in Spanish “ I don’t mind you speaking English because we live here in the U.S., but when you’re here at home, you will learn and speak Spanish. You’re Latino and you need to know your parent’s language.” It was one of the best life lessons I ever have.

It requires a huge effort from parents to do this (especially if the parents are bilingual), but it’s the only way a kid is going to be able to become fluent in Spanish while attending an English-speaking school.
2/4 of my grandparents had a different first language. My grandmother had hers beat out of her by nuns, my grandfather just dropped to be more American. I wish my father had been given the chance to learn either as a child so that he could pass it on. Your parents did you right.

Unfortunately it happens quite a lot worldwide with people who live in a different country than their background.
My Mom claimed was my fault that I didn't learn Spanish. She says I said "I don't want to learn that Greek Spanish." I pointed out that by the time I was saying such phrases that was already way past the point of teaching us. Need to teach as young babies thru language development. -- When older I was trying to learn & she would correct every teeny tiny mistake & treat me like I was mentally defective for being so stupid. Sigh! -- So here I am in my 60s still trying to learn Spanish well enough to feel comfortable to hold conversations. I know quite a bit, but terrified to make mistakes. My Mom's passed away many years now. -- So many of my cousins speak Spanish fluently. Oh well! Not sure why my Mom didn't want to teach us. My Dad had learned working for 12 years in South America, so he was fluent too. Neither taught us Spanish, though we all ended up with fairly good pronunciation (probably just some exposure at family gatherings?).
I'm just now seeing this video, but i feel every word that Jenna is saying. Growing up, my grandparents didn't really want us to know Spanish. They wanted us to assimilate into America as much as possible. I didn't think of it much as a kid, but the older I got, the harder it was to connect to my heritage and the harder it was to learn. Now that I'm an adult, I'm just now getting comfortable pronouncing my name correctly. I feel embarrassed that I don't know more. I have mixed race kids who I need to make sure don't grow up without knowing their heritage and it's a lot to deal with

Edit: The HUGE problem here is that US citizens misuse language... words like "America", "Americans" and "Latinos" are distorted and uprooted from their true meaning. Are the rest of us supposed to accept their definitions only because of their political, economic and cultural influence? I don't think so.
When you are raised in the US with Hispanic parents you have a wildly different cultural upbringing than your peers causing you to feel like a foreigner in your own country, which is why they identify more with being Latino.

My father did not teach me his mother tongue bc he thought it would hurt me learning English. I grew up learning to be ashamed of my heritage and I know my parents did the best they could but wish they didn’t have to feel like our language was second class. Jenna and Rachel represent the Latina girls from the diaspora who feel empowered through a community of other Latina women. They were always made fun of by their peers for not being western enough then turn around and get made fun of by their own for not being Latina enough. If you don’t understand their perspectives then it’s probably because you have never experienced what this is like.

I like you Brett. You are a sweetheart. You are coming from a view that doesn’t understand or see Latino culture in America and how it affects newer generations. There are a lot of people who are culturally Latinos but don’t speak Spanish. Jenna Ortega is one of them. For one reason or another it skipped their generation. It’s not their fault. Sometimes their parents didn’t pass that on to them because of the challenges they had as kids and didn’t want their kids to have them. I remember as a kid getting in trouble at school for speaking Spanish. At some point because I didn’t use Spanish I was starting to forget it. Luckily I didn’t all thanks to my mom. I have some family members that do speak Spanish and some that don’t. It doesn’t invalidate them as Latinos. As Latinos in the US we are already labeled “ni de aquí ni de allá” meaning “not from here or there.” Yes it would be nice for Jenna to speak Spanish but she is a product of the challenges that the Latino culture experiences today. Now I don’t understand the whole Hollywood culture - I’m sure you know that better than me. People are probably telling her what to say and such. Anyhow I really like watching your content and can’t wait to see your Snow White movie.
As a Puertorican and native Spanish speaker living in the US there hasn’t been many conversations where I feel the need to insert my culture and heritage. I also travel twice a year to PR, like it’s so easy, can’t imagine loving your country so much, being so proud and having the means to visit but not doing so 🤔

Honestly at this moment even Matt Damon represents Latins much better. He embraced the language and culture thanks to his wife. His children were raised under the Argentinian culture and he made the conscious decision to learn the language, so he could be part of the multi-cultural family

People often forget (especially Americans) that being Latino is a CULTURE, not a race. There's TONS of different features, looks, skin colors and so on in Latin-American.
Language is a more important common denominator than ethnicity. If you move to another country and learn a language and speak it very well, people don't care as much about your ethnicity. They will accept you. If you don't speak the language but look like the locals, you won't be accepted. This is true for (almost) any country.
True, language is everything. If someone has other color but speaks like me I see them as part of my country. Foreigners are the ones who have accents regardless of how they look

I am American with Hispanic and Latino roots ( Mexican ). I speak spanish. It was literally my first language. It's not perfect but it's definitely something I am proud of. It's never too late for Jenna to learn spanish, it's not easy but possible.

I recently toured the Mid-West and was surprised by how many people said they have Dutch heritage, which was rather wholesome.

Hi, I'm one of those Midwesterners with Dutch roots. 👋 My great grandpa immigrated from the Netherlands, my grandpa still keeps in contact with some of his cousins from the motherland. You'll definitely find a lot more Dutch immigrant Pride in the West Michigan area. We even have a city called Holland with a Dutch village built into it as a tourist trap, lol.

Omg thank you for bringing attention to this! I’ve seen it all my life lol. I’m a fairer skinned Latina, Venezuelan heritage and Spanish was my first language too. People are very quick to dismiss me embracing my culture because I don’t “look” it, including other Latinos. But most of the more-Latino-looking Latinos I encounter don’t speak Spanish at all 😅

You are not latino if you didn't grow up in a Latin speaking country and speak the language. Like it or not being latino is not a race and the definition of that side of the Americas was defined by their language, so YES, to be latino you have to speak a latin language. Besides what Americans say... including you, with the " I am too white for that comment ". There are many Latin countries where white population is majority. They are white.
Anya didn't just "grew up on Argentina " her father is argentinean, her grandparents too and she was born in Miami out of coincidence. She explained that many times before.
Last but not least, you don't stop mentioning "you are too white "... you could be from ANY latino country. There are girls like you (and not one or two but many ) in most latin countries. You are not "Nordic looking " or "German looking " or anything like that.
It’s crazy that as an Australian with no ancestry that wasn’t in Australia before 1860, I have a far better grasp of what Latin Americans are, they are simply people of the countries in the Americas that were founded by france, Portuguese, and Spanish settlers, aka speakers of Latin languages. Hispanic isn’t a race it is the people of those nations, or descendants of such people.
They can be any colour as they had ethnic variance from German settlers in Patagonia to west African slaves of Haiti and native Americans of the Yucatan.

If I moved to Japan, I would be expected to speak & read Japanese to function in daily life. They would not cater to me. If they want to continue speaking Spanish in all of their daily affairs, they should reside in a Spanish speaking country. One of my friends came from Vietnam with her mother, as a child. Her mother has STILL refused to learn functional English. This forces my friend to do all of her medical & business affairs from afar. She is in effect her mother's personal translator. I think that is wrong. If she wanted to come here, she should learn to communicate with the people who were already here.

I am a proud Latina. First generation EVERYTHING in the US. My parents and I migrated from Colombia in 2000. I could not imagine letting our culture, roots, language fade away. It is so important to us that we continue to teach our future generations about our history and of course our language. My children will be fluent in spanish and I will teach them the importance of being Latin, but also the importance of being bilingual.

I am Chilean. However, I have green eyes, white skin and blonde hair. Both my parents were also born and raised in chile until my mother migrated with me and my sister to Canada. While my sister (who is actually haft but we don’t call each other that ever) has black hair, dark brown eyes and sunkiss skin. She was welcome by the Latino community I wasn’t. In fact it was kind of annoying sometimes to always have to say “hey I’m not gringa, I’m latina too”. Or even my sister had to let people know; “hey she is my sister. She can speak Spanish too”
I begin building relationships first with white Canadians and even African and Asian migrants before my own community.
But now I just embraced it. I have been in Canada for many years. Grew up in it, but I love that now people do see Latina in me as I’m warm, friendly and loud 😂
I love my roots and it took me a while to feel Latina even when I was all along.
So sometimes even your own community doesn’t know what represents and what doesn’t.
I may not know too much but i do know its very important to know the culture and your roots of where you come from. I'm 100% white and worked at an almost entirely Chinese speaking restaurant for a long time. They loved talking about how important that kind of thing is and about their culture. I loved listening too.
I'm doing a study abroad program in Japan my junior or senior year of uni. I'm pretty stoked to learn more about the culture. I love learning about new languages and cultures that are so different from my southern roots.
Jenna's ability is what is sort of known in the American Latino community as "No Sabo" (name origins coming from an incorrect pronunciation of "I don't know" in Spanish) and it does make you pretty nervous because No Sabo kids are treated quite cruelly by other Latino's.

Both my parents migrated here from Mexico. We Hispanics do not care about representation. Yes it can make us feel appreciated and seen, take a million miles away as an example, but a lot of the time we don’t care.

I kind of feel for Jenna Ortega. Her speaking about being insecure about claiming her heritage sounded very sincere and I believe that, had her PR team not pushed her down that road, she would have found a way to deal with it that isn't this dishonest. Obviously, she's an adult so I'm not trying to claim that she isn't responsible for this at all, but to me it seems like this is part of a "brainwashing" trend that can be seen on both extremes of the political spectrum. A lot of today's discourse could be described as "learned outrage". People get upset over nothing. People cry because their identities aren't respected, they cry because other people have identities they don't understand, they cry because there are too few black people in the media, they cry because there are too many, they cry because some women want to be stay at home mums, they cry because some women want careers. It's ridiculous. Most of it could be solved if people just minded their own business. I don't have to stop eating cake because my neighbour doesn't like cake, but I'm also not allowed to force-feed him cake. As easy as that.

In my opinion as a Latina (Dominican) language is the biggest player in connecting to my heritage. I mean, the Latino culture is BIG on music which of course, you need to know Spanish to understand. Our foods have names that don’t even have translations. Also, we usually have big united families and having elders around, you need to speak Spanish cause most of them don’t speak English well or don’t even want to. So, language is not everything, you can still enjoy music and food without it, but I believe language is at least 50%.
When that language is different for all Latino countries, I wouldn’t say it’s the factor that makes someone Latino/ Latina nor what unites all Latin countries. My family is from Mexico and I grew up hearing their way of speaking Spanish. I’ve dated a Puerto Rican and Salvadoreño and met friends of other Latin countries and had to learn so many words because it’s not the same way that I say something. Words like popcorn are interpreted differently and has more than 10 ways of interpreting! And quite frankly, Dominicans don’t even speak Spanish, that’s a whole other language they created and the slang they use is very different from how I’ve heard Mexicans talk.

As a Latina myself, it’s a shame if you minimize our entire beautiful culture into just language. Language is a factor in culture but not the entirety. To say she isn’t Latina or anyone else can’t be Latino because they can’t speak Spanish is like saying I’m not Latina because I don’t know how to dance Salsa. Clearly she was trying to say words in Spanish. This short little clip doesn’t mean this is all the practice that she did and can you confirm what she does in her daily routine? You don’t just become fluent in a language overnight. And even if she doesn’t want to learn Spanish, doesn’t make her any less Latina.
I know. As a Dominican and Haitian, Haitian culture is more accepted in my family; although we have family in Dominican Republic. And it doesn’t help I’m from America. I know 0% Spanish but I’m taking Spanish 1 in school because I also understand it’s a big part in culture.

I’m a white-as-snow Mexican, born and raised in Mexico, and I’ve always felt like those born in the US (from any heritage, but born and raised in the US) are almost ashamed of just saying they’re American so they make this huge deal about being Latinos or Italians, or any other thing, or their skin color; but they’ve never set foot in those countries or know ANYTHING about them other than what they’ve been told and assume. And then they have the nerve to speak for us and pretend they know what being actually Mexican (for example) is like, when in reality they wouldn’t survive two seconds in the countries they’re claiming as their own. Their own country is America and they have to learn to be proud of that.

I don't think your perspective is accurate at all lol. Nationality and ethnicity are 2 different things. I was born in America indeed but I grew up speaking Spanish, eating Mexican food, watching Mexican telenovelas, etc so I do heavily identify with being Mexican/Latino. I've been multiple times as well. I also believe being "proud of your country" is dumb, you should be proud of things you accomplish not things you had no input in, like the country you're born in.

As a child of the USA and of a father that is native Mexican I never learned Spanish and I ALWAYS felt I never properly represented Mexican American. Not my fault my dad didn’t teach me 🤷🏽♀️it reminds me of this time I was called in for a job interview and I was with all latinas. Later I was told they specifically wanted to hire more latinas because there was a growing Spanish speaking community. I was there with my yankee accent like “yup, I only speak English.” But don’t get it twisted: I still work as hard as a Mexican 😂

You can learn Spanish if you want. Its not that hard.
As long as you don't go around saying that you should be in more places to represent your culture more, or try to teach others what it's like to live immersed in Spanish culture. You won't be bothered, at most they will ask you if you speak Spanish, or know this or that, and some people will be a little surprised. The point is that you are no longer Latina, Latina. For us, if you were not born or raised in a Latin country, you are not Latin. Here no one perceives their nationality through blood because there is a lot of diversity and mixture of different ethnicities. We feel represented by the similarities of the countries, the culture and even the way of thinking and seeing life is different from an American, we feel proud of it and seeing Jenna Ortega in Hollywood supposedly representing it is ironic because she does in the most American way possible that makes us laugh, she wants to represent us. If you were born in the USA and raised there, you are from there, it does not matter if your parents, grandparents or great-grandparents come from somewhere else, each person has the right to have their own cultural identity. You are not your parents, nor your grandparents, nor should you be responsible for another family member who has a different ethnic origin than yours, nor is it your obligation. My parents come from completely different places from where I am, they grew up in the fields (they are different provinces, which in the USA, would be like states) and I grew up in the city, yes it is a stupid example and it is not like they came from another country, but my point is that they have an origin that does not It has nothing to do with mine because they have a different culture and upbringing than mine and they chose for my life to be somewhere else and that is where my cultural identity was formed. My girlfriend is Latina and she grew up speaking Spanish and English. She’s lost some of her Spanish over the years since moving away from her family but can still hold a conversation in Spanish that’s slightly more advanced than the basics. She’s also visited Mexico once or twice where her father grew up. But she doesn’t go around preaching about how Latina people need more representation. Does she get excited when an original character is Latin based? Absolutely. Keyword ORIGINAL. From what she’s told me she finds it offensive when people take characters and just change their race instead of being creative enough to create new characters and stories about people of Latin origin.

There are some celebrities like Viggo Mortensen who is very involved (very crazily) with a popular soccer team called San Lorenzo (St. Lawrence) and also has a very strong standpoint, although privately, in Argentina's politics.

American here with a French immigrant mom. I speak both English and French fluently. I’m currently learning Spanish as a third language. It’s been a year and I’ve been doing Duolingo every day. Where I live, there are way fewer Hispanics to practice Spanish with and I still speak 10x better Spanish than Ortega does. My French might help me big time, but it’s still pathetic AF and I have no sympathy

There are and have been plenty of Latina women representing in music, movies and TV from the 90’s onwards and probably a lot more that I am missing. It’s not like she and Rachel are the first or doing the most.. I agree that it’s great to be proud of your heritage and upbringing, but like Brett said you don’t need to make it your whole personality.

I've been all over Latin America, and there were 2 moments that were quite striking as I was trying to learn the language. The first time you see a person of Asian descent speaking fluent Porteño Spanish in Argentina and, the first time you encounter red-headed Latinas/Latinos. It just shows you how diverse the Latin world really is. Heck, most of the people we regard as Latino in the US, are really Native American at heart...they just happen to have been imbued with Spanish language and culture.

When a person immerses themselves into their culture the first must do is to learn the language. Only then it will allow you to fully get involved in conversations about everything from food to politics. It connects you in a deep and meaningful way.

In a training class for a job they asked if any of us could speak Spanish. I'm trilingual and speak both English and Spanish fluently (and Romanian somewhat). While I'm technically biracial (Native American and Caucasian) and Mexican-American by nationality, I'm quite white. Literally none of the second generation Hispanics in my training spoke Spanish. I was was the one 'white' person in the class and the only one who could speak Spanish. I can speak Spanish due to being born and raised in Latin America. Looking like a POC person isn't everything. And being white/light skinned doesn't mean someone isn't Latino/Latina.
I have british surname (Smith), and born in Argentina, I speak spanish and english... regardless that, I consider myself a Latino ... Latino means Latin American so anywhere Mexico and below. You can claim that ethnicity if you have heritage anywhere there, but people actually from those countries are going to be more comfortable identifying as such.

It's not perplexing. People want to be victims in the USA. Latino/Hispanic is one more box they get to check off.
