Much respect for making this video, I changed the thrust control arms (which I needed to) and thought that would fix the noise. It didn't fix. I thought I had to take the struts out and disassemble them to change the top mounts. I just ordered the mounts.
Thanks. I’ve done that top foam repair and the bottom foam. It is ridiculous to use that material in a suspension. They become a nasty dust almost every year. My first BMW was a 1973 2002 tii. The newest one, a X6 2022. With each new model, the feeling of a real sport car is vanishing.
You are so right about cleaning out leafs and Debris. I had it where water started to pool up and than Seep into the cabin. After a big rainstorm I noticed my Driver side carpet was wet and I had no idea where it was coming from until I open the hood.
Simple fix bro thanks alot! Saved me a bunch of money because one mechanic wanted to change my entire suspension so I walked out put some 3in1 oil and that helped until I found this video
A few years ago I removed the strut assembly, disassembled it and replaced these cushions. It was a lot of work. A few years later I'm back to that same clunking which I dread. I just ran across your video and decided to give it a try. I'm almost sure a cushion on the bottom side has deteriorated also nevertheless I replaced the uppers on both sides and wear riding quiet again. Some cushion is better than nothing.
Awesome video. I like that you actually moved the vehicle up and down while that washer was off to show the travel of the strut coming up and down proving that would be the cause of the noise. Thank you so much for taking time to make the video. Be blessed..
GREAT VIDEO: I watched my driver's side being replaced and it is not a hard job at all. While traveling off grid last summer, a guy in an old town took me to his real rural town mechanic who charged me $75 and cursed the whole time about these f'king new foreign cars! btw I have a 2012 X5 iDrive - not new at all;) He'd jacked it up, taken off the front wheel and about to start dismantling the suspension cables before he realized all he had to do was take off the top cap (as shown in the video) and omg there was the rottoned out rubber bushing totally disintegrated. I just ordered a set for the right side that recently started to clunk. $11 at AutoZone or O'Reilly's
Hi I used silicon sealer and made molds. Round thick do nut size about 1 inch thick. Used them instead and much much better. To make an easy mold use the black silicone for cars. Pump the silicone into bucket filled with soapy water. Squeeze water out..like doug..and make mold. Sets within 3 hours.
Yo, you saved me. i just spent 272 for each shock absorber i just returned them and get these thing gor 14 dollar now my car is great now.. bmw ask for 800 to put two shocks also part will be over 500 f... bmw things the dont want us to know thanks a lot again bro
Great video sir thank you. One question. my the strut on my x 5 come out pointing not centered but pointed towards the rim. I have to pull on the strut top in order to center and place the bushing and then the strut goes back to it non centered position. Any ideas? on how to center the right strut mount top so that the bushing goes on centered ? Thank you sir.
Excellent video, great job! I am going to replace whole strut but now I will try this first. All the X5’s have not the same kind of suspension. What’s the year or model of X5 in the video?
do you have adaptive steering? I have the 4.8 and dreading the day that I will have to replace front and rear shocks as I said they are adaptive so you have to buy original bmw brand and all 4 is $3200 but I plan to overhaul all the mounting absorbsers top and bottom to see that will make the shocks go a couple more years.
Start buying the parts little by little until you have the whole pkg, I did that with my BMW then when the time came it wasn't too bad. I've done that with my suspension, power steering system and brakes. Replaced everything down to the nuts so nothing is rusted and the car felt good as new.
The nut was so stuck on mine that I destroyed the allen part of the bolt trying to remove it. Now the allen wrench just spins. I soaked it in liquid wrench before attempting but it still didn't budge. Any body have any ideas?
@@yardmanmotorworks1759 I got it! I let it soak with pb blaster penatrating fluid for a few days and I hammered in a quality Allen wrench socket in it and it came off. The old ring was gone. Only dust was left. I replaced both sides and the clunking noise is completely gone. Thank you so much man. Much love to you my brother. 👊🏼

Glad I could help
Im gonna try this....Thanks for the info bredda.
Excellent! I'm going to try this. Wondering how much torque on the washer and the nut? I hope the set of strut mount bearings will fit a 2011 X5 35d.

Good video. Thank you. Do you have a video for the lower bushing replacement?
Nice Mann I have the same issue .. great post ..thanks '
Great video, but the camera moving so much is a problem.
this is for an e70 right? i have an e53 but i dont think it has mount bushes in the engine bay like the e70 :S thinks its a much bigger job

mine does not have the adaptive suspension but the mount might work the same way
Mine has adaptive steering (4.8l) but the repair is the same. Different BMW part number for the upper bushing. Still only $14 per side.

I would think that if the pad on top was bad the pad underneath would be even worse.
it is bad underneath for sure, but for the purpose of the noise the top was just easy to replace

after you soak it then try using a impact wrench make sure to use a wire brush to clean the treading at the top

Did you put your car on Jacks before doing that? Thank you.
no i did not jack the car up
mistaking shock repair for mounting repair 2 different things no offence just saying.
