Excellent video. There's so many videos elsewhere with music playing so you can't hear the fault noise let alone the mechanic. This guy explains things simply and clearly and gives a much better indication of how to diagnose the fault.
Excellent no-nonsense video. We need more videos like this! Straight to the point, clear and concise. Thank you!
tremendous dem! i thought i bought a lemon
Help me my car engen want to go off when I realised the clutch
@@FillipusBoykgive a little more gas lol, it’s not typical for a standard to be able to idle into a roll.
Unless you’re just trolling. In which case, I recommend spraying the intake and air filter thoroughly with water to remove residue.
"Not all heroes wear capes"; Brother you saved my life, thank you😊
The way he calmly explains this is just superb. My car has been giving this sound for a while to the extent that now it has started loosening inner CV joints bolts. It's 3 am I can't wait to get up and sort it out. Thanks
Thank you 🙏
Its 2:38 and I cant wait either 😄

@@georgedeschler1514idk if this is a good thing or bad thing but my car is at the stage where going over really rough bumps makes the noise, whatever bushing it is, isn’t bad enough to where i can replicate it but pushing down or using a pry bar to check for play
Thanks for the video. I found my stabilizer link was bad. Picked one up at auto parts store and replaced. Fixed my problem. I canceled my appointment with a repair shop.
Superb advice. After being conned 2K by the reputable workshop for changing the “bad parts” and did not solved the clunking noise, I finally had a good mechanic fixed the steering bush for just over a hundred bucks to solve the clunking problem!
Which bushes are these?
@@bonifacenjorogendichu3551the ones at the side of your house
Probably ball joints on the tie rods, also called track rods.
He just sits there calmly identifying problems while we are pulling our hair out identifying the noise :)))
This is why garages exist
This guy has learnt by pulling his hair out once its all gone your a vw master and become calm and relaxed

This advice is always welcome and useful. I've paid 200 bucks just for the diagnosis and I've been asked to pay well over 2000 USD for this clunking noise to be fixed. As I'm not coining money and I'm far from stupid, I didn't pay them and not gonna pay them a single dime.
It is tie rods no question
@@bggraham83 I have a 2021 jeep compass and I heard a faint clicking noise by the steering and now a couple weeks later it's even louder and if I go over a big bump it's a big loud click and the dealership is saying nothing is wrong it's just a regular suspension noise which is ridiculous no new noise on a car is just regular ,does my problem sound like the same thing? So I need to get my tie rods replaced? Is that expensive? Or covered under warranty?
i have same problem when breaking, but the noise is coming from rear wheels
I googled the symptoms on my car and it seems to have cancer
Lol

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Yup. I think they all do 😂😅
Speaking as someone with cancer, I would love to exchange my cars 'loose ball joint' for my 'cancer' :D
Cant believe i found this video, thank you, this is the exact noise my car is making and hearing it in the cab! Roll on the morning when i can go out and check, ive been stressing like mad thinking awful was wrong with it. Subscribed 😊
I have watched a bunch of videos and this one was excellent. Thanks for mentioning the possibility of the bearings on the shocks and the whole idea of parts that move up and down versus those that move diagonally or side to side.
I've had this irritating clunking noise coming from the front end of my suspension, for almost 3 weeks now and I think it might be my inner tie rod and also struts. Thanks for making this video good insight for sure.
I'm an hour away from home and this happened am I safe to drive home
@@christopher-xi2ey If you just started hearing clunking noises on your Car, it's typically one of two things, either your sway bar end links are broken or your front shocks are worn out and need to be replaced.
If your sway bar end links are broken you should get them replaced immediately. Put your four way hazards on and don't drive more than 40 miles an hour as it's really dangerous driving like that.
@@Eurospec73 I had my struts replaced and all of a sudden it makes that noise of metal, car is 2018 accord guessing the mechanics apprentices possibly installed it wrong
This video is very good. This guy explains everything very well, and covers all possible scenarios, and pictures while he is speaking. A very well put together video.
Thank you so much for the kind feedback 😊
Thanks for all the info mate. I literally had the same issue on my car on both sides. Was told I had to change the suspension but I was able to fix it after watching you video. Thank you!
Tyre shop or engine oil shop trick
Thank you for this video, I went to loads of mechanics who quoted me at least a thousand pounds every time to fix it, got told it was my whole suspension, so went to scrap yard, got quoted 250 pounds for the passenger whole suspension, so I sent a male friend to go and ask for it a week later they charged him 80 pounds for it! Hate to say it but I think it was to do with the fact I had chesticles! Anyway I’m now replacing my whole suspension leg myself!
How did it go?
I go to the scrap yard all the time, I'm a female, what helps is doing research before hand if they have a website with part prices, for the scrap yard I go to they have it and that's all I do so I don't get ripped off, got tired of being ripped off because people thought I didn't know what I was talking about
That is so shameful that they treated you like that just because you are a female, what a bunch of arse holes.
I'm a woman, and sadly I don't go to garages anymore. I have to fix the car myself because they treat women like crap and over charge.
They quote female a higher price than men idk why and that’s unfair 😔
I always replace my droplinks first as only £25. Loads speed bumps in my area. Replace them bi annualty. Cured every time. Doesn’t make any noise on bounce test. Thanks for this very educational and well presented. Sometimes the droplinks seem ok until u take them off when very worn. Had a spring break too but had to pay for that to be done as dont have and don’t like compressing springs!,,
Did the noise sound like a loose muffler or tail pipe on bumpy road when car is warbling at slow speed?

Thank you, very kind of you to say :)

Many thanks for your video Gerard. I had to take my honda pilot to the dealer due to not being able to find the source of a rattle noise from the passenger side front. Dealer wanted to charge me $2100 to replace the sway bar links & bushings and compliance bushings. I took it home and replaced the sway bar links & bushings myself for about $120, but the sound was still there. Came across your video and the idea of pushing on the corner of the car to recreate the sound was the key. Wish I had thought about this myself. I was able to find the noise coming from a loose nut on the top strut mount that was causing the washer below it to rattle. Tightened it up and sound is gone. Not sure what the dealership did to diagnose the problem, but they weren't very thorough.
Car dealers just rub their hands thinking of the money in parts and labour
This is a clear and concise diagnostic video. I have a 2010 Audi A3 that had an incredibly irritating rattle that was getting louder. I tried to diagnose the problem several times. I could only re-create the noise if I pushed the car side to side very hard with the wheels straight. I visually inspected everything multiple times and grabbed the tie rod for the sway bar and tried to shake it but couldn’t find the problem. Because of this video I took the wheel off another time and checked all the nuts on the shock absorber to discover that the rattle was the upper tie rod nut being loose (even though it didn’t look or feel like it was). Thank you!
Great video !!, for me it was the sway bar bushings and the sway bar links. The rubber covers on the links had tore. And the rubber bushing had wore down on the right side causing movement creating that clunking sound....no more noise, it cost around 350.00 to replace links and one set of two bushings for sway bar. Start there before you start replacing shocks and suspension parts...word to the wise. I hope this comment helps because mechanics want to sell struts and major suspension parts. Find someone who is honest and have a talk with them.
This is the exact knocking/ rattle noise I get from the front left underside of my for transit connect!
Nice vid. One thing I didn’t hear mentioned is control arm bushings. Those can also make a similar sound when going over uneven or bumpy terrain. If you have an early 2000s Infiniti G35 (and maybe Nissan 350z/370z) this is a very common issue. It happened to me. When I replaced the control arms I replaced the bushings with polyurethane bushings and it looked like they were going to hold up much better or even solve the issue. Unfortunately I totaled the car so now I’ll never know
Had this over 2 years sooooo annoying even the mot guy didn't pick it up twice then RUclips came to the rescue now I enjoy driving the car sooo silent 😁😁😁
Brilliant video, mate. .. im not a mechanic, but I just managed to repair my tank due to how good your explanations were. 😂 .
Amazing when a problem can be fixed that easily! Always a relief.
Thanks so much- in a bit over my head with a car that has no business being on the road- looks like I've bought myself an expensive education- thanks for being a good teacher.
Thanks for the kind words 🙏🙏
@@GerardBurkeBurkesGarage nah credit where it's due Gerard not enough genuine educators in the world... I could hear much on the bounce test- at least that seems like my suspension might be ok for now... Going to get me a lift and some stands and have a look at them bushes....
I've been working on my driver side for a long time
I've been watching videos for hours
Started shaking the driver side no noise......shook the passenger side........knock knock.........thanks for the shaking suggestion
Man thanks a ton. I have had the whole front end redone in my 06 Xterra and still have a knocking/tapping sound. Almost has to be the sway bar bushings. Everything else is fixed.
dude this was the most informative video I've watched on youtube, cheers man
I have this noise for 2 years in Skoda Fabia and I change swey bar links, ball joint, inner - ute tie rod end , and today i change driveshift complete just to remove this sound and here we go its still there .... Maybe Maybe it can be mounting bushing or shock absorb but I dont seee anything from mounting bushing or shock absorb when I remove the wheel ...It.s just in drive side ....thnx a million for video
I am watching your video because I have spent three days underneath my wifes 2019 Ford Escape AWD with 42k miles.I hear the clunking noise on bumps so I took all the splash panels off and checked every bolt ,bushing ,link under the car ! I can not find any play or worn parts anyway .The sway bar links seem fine also .I changed out the struts with new complete struts to eliminate any possibility of them causing the noise. The noise is still there .The vehicle drives and rides beautifully but sounds like rattle trap! I am going to replace sway bar links after watching your video because that will eliminate one more possibility ! This is st ing me nuts.
In my 15 explorer i've replace 4 shocks, front saw bar links, lower control arm, rear upper control arms, rear sway bar links, rear toe link.....and the mf clunking noise front and rear still there. I'm just getting crazy and mechanics said they didn't hear anything. My wife 13 explorer still run smooth without replace anything.....mine not after a lot of money out of the pocket 😢
I found the cause of my noise yesterday ! The caliper bracket bolts that hold it to the steering knuckle had come loose . It did not make any noise when braking but when you hit a bump the bracket would rattle against the knuckle .Tightened up and noise went awsy
My car suddenly started making this type of noise tonight and I didn’t feel safe driving it. My spouse made me feel so diminished because he was mad about not getting to the restaurant and stated it makes it because of the bumps and it was fine. Drove it back and I just went to the house while he went with our son in his car. He berated me for not caring enough to make an appointment (I need to get rotation and balance AND new set of tires), even though I had three daily alarms and called twice but the offices were closed. Smh. Thank goodness for videos like this to help diagnose and understand the shop when they quote a repair.
Get a new spouse as well alongside the new tires you plan getting!
If you feel the need to pour your feelings and put him on blast on RUclips then you both need some therapy
Thank you! With your advice I was able to locate which corner the noise is coming from, now to find the cause...
What a great video this was. Good to hear the actual noise on a road test too. Thanks a lot.
Thank you sir. The test drive was on point. This was the best. My swaybars are damaged and this noise is terrible. Thanks
I wish this video had popped up for me 2 years ago. Thank you, Mr. Burke.

😅😅😅
On my mom's 2009 Mazda 5, we had a noise that sounded like a loose strut nut (top one on threaded end of the shock tube), it turned out to be worn frontsway bar bushings that allowed the sway bar to bang around - something I never saw before
Good job Gerard, thats not a problem over here at all because the roads are so good:):):)
I was just thinking that Pat :) not a pothole or bump in sight 😂😂

Could you put up a similar video demonstrating the noise coming from worn out stabilizer bar bushes?...would be really helpful as I'm a mechanic myself..
In my experience it is always a squeak when going over speed bumps.
i have an identical noise to the one in the video when going over bumps, going to check it tommorow, wish me luck!
Very useful, and concise and easy to understand explanation. Thank you.
Kept wondering what was going on with my 03 lancer clocking clicking noise come to find out it was the same as that thing Had to replace the bushings then add the stabilizing links tighten up that fixed it glad I came across your vid.
*Being that everything is new on my suspension with under 500 miles on the parts I'm positive it's the sway bar bushings, or failed sway links ( new they can fail )*
We’re here because our cars need a complete rebuild but that would cost more than it’s worth. Fix the one problem and drive it until the next.
Now, to only find a mechanic that would be honest enough to, to admit such a simple fix.
Was that vehicle a 'clunk-odore? They are notorious for link bar failure.
Thanks for the quick tips.
Good, logical process. 😊
Sure was, another new name for the Holden family 😂

thanks for the information. I have a 2015 impala with thumping in front suspension. Very annoying. You have a great accent, by the way!
Excellent video. Just to confirm: if the issue is the droplinks that are not correctly tightened, we can only confirm with the front of the car lifted, it that correct?

I have 2013 Prius, noise coming from bottom most likely from rear but not sure. It sound like loose tail pipe or muffler but that is not the case. Toyota and another shop check it out but no specific reason given. I hear the noise when going over uneven road at slow speed. Has 130k miles run smoothly on even roads. Your help is greatly appreciated.
I have the same problem. I thought it was the shock. I replaced it but I still have the same noise. I did see some broken plastic pieces that I believe came from there, but nothing seemed to be missing. I’m gonna have to take the passenger side apart now to see what’s different.
I have exactly the same noise. I've checked all the suspension in the area and seems to be okay, can't find anything loose. Then after your video I did the bounce test, which couldn't replicate the noise. But when I grabbed the roof rails and pushed the car side to side I got the knock noise.
Would this be more likely the sway bar or anti roll bar? Bushings or nuts?
If that was the case, is that something you can replace without needing a bearing press and removal kit.
Does anyone in Ireland rent those for use?
Great video for explanation btw
excellent content, thanks! also notice all the extra info gerard throws in there, thats the juicy stuff, that's the experience you're after
A clunking noise coming from your front end when going over bumps or rough road being an issue with some part of your front suspension is a brilliant deduction. I would of bet anything that it would of been the muffler bearing.
I've got a 72 reg golf and get a creaking noise when turning the steering at slow speed parking or maneuvering. Took it back to vw to fix on the warranty. They said it was something to do with the upper part of the front struts and used some grease. It's OK now but worried that this could return later on, has the car gets older.
Thank you for this! What would it be if turning the wheel from side to side and the noise seems to come from the middle?
steering rack
Could be the steering rack or could be the steering drumsticks which screw on the steering rack
Depends on the exact noise.
The rattling sound on my Nissan Pathfinder when suv is driving were the clamps on exhaust they rust and fall off and needed to be replaced. I think my suv had 2-3 and they fell off on their own and that was causing a rattling sound pretty loud. Just putting this out there in case it might help anyone :)
Good to see an irish fella we can relate to
Cheers Ciaran
Excellent video. Thank you.
Thanks the issue for me was the stabilizer links and the sliding pins on the brake caliper

I took my car for a Timing belt replacement and they had to remove the front right wheel...a day after I started hearing this noise on my right wheel. Took it back but they couldn't find out what's the cause of this noise.
this really helped thanks, although I think my neighbours now think I'm nuts jumping up and down on my engine bay! :)
🤣
Sorry Bro
Same here
Very helpful video! Is it dangerous to drive it like that at any point?
Yes, and or no. It really depends on what's making the noise. Assume it's unsafe until you know it is. It could just be a sway bar link a little loose, or it could be a shot ball joint that'll send you out of control on the highway when you hit a pothole.
Excellent to the point explanation. Thanks a lot.

great video thanks ! Had the dealership look at this noise twice over the past 18 months they changed the top shocks but still same, taking it in again as warranty runs out later this year hopefully its the drop link as it sounds very similar noise to mine. Cheers!

I’m experiencing the same noise on my late 2021 Peugeot e-208. I’m the 3rd owner, purchased from a private seller one month ago. I’m confused it didn’t make the knocking sound during the test drive, until the next day when I drove to work. There’s also a creaking sound from the front when the steering wheel is fully turned and moving off slowly, although I had the same creaking noise in the same car which was manufactured in late 2020. I almost purchased a new shock absorber after reading about similar problems on the speakev forum. Probably best to visit a suspension specialist first.
You being the 3rd owner in just 2 years should tell you a lot. Most likely the previous owner replaced a part with a cheap one as opposed to OEM. The cheap ones break easier and don't last long.
@@SL-pg4dh I agree. Getting OEM parts from the main dealer will take 3-4 months for this electric version of the Peugeot 208. It’s so frustrating.
