The lyric they actually had a problem with in the song is the line paraphrased from the Bible (Jesus' prayer on the cross), sometimes called the Martyr's Prayer, and they thought copycats might use it as an anthem.
Metal singers don't use their vocal chords when they growl. They use what are called false chords. It's more like forcing air out than actually singing.
The song is about how death is perceived, depending on HOW you die, as to whether you get sympathy or ire. (Angel's deserve to die) The original total was "Suicide" the record company said No, so they cut the word in half, hence Chop-Suey.
The song was originally called "Suicide." But their record producers didn't think it would get much radio play time with that name, so it was changed to "Chop Suey." So "suicide" is in the lyrics, but "chop suey" is not.

My sister is good friends with the drummer of this group. He kept inviting her and her family to their concerts but she doesn't really like their music so she always declined. The title makes sense now. The song does mix things up. As for not performing at the Grammys I'm thinking bands that do that are focused on "the music" and don't care about the fame. If you had ever heard the album version of the song, you would have heard Serj Tankian, the singer, say, right before they start playing, "We're rolling-" and then a word that is repeated after "self-righteous" many times in the song. That is why it's called Chop Suey - because of the similarity of the "suey" part of chop suey to the word for "self-unaliving". /watch?v=GK-DkHHAMIU

After seeing this reaction, I'm certain you'll enjoy & appreciate the song you mentioned BYOB from SOAD's album "Mezmerize". It's the type of song where the melody is really groovin' & you can get into it well, just about as much as you see the club people dancing in parts of the video. As for the bit about bad timing this wasn't the only group impacted by 9/11. A DC area band formed in 1997 called Burning Airlines (inspired by Brian Eno's 1974 song "Burning Airlines Give You So Much More") was in the midst of a North American tour on 9/11. According to Wikipedia, "Many clubs refused to display the band's name prominently and the band considered changing their name but decided the name was still appropriate and had taken a new meaning and relevancy. The band then abruptly split up in 2002." Oughta give early (pre-ambient) Eno a listen sometime.

I was going through my "liked videos" and ran into something that would make for an awesome reaction...though, I fear that you might have heard it before. It's called "Rising Roads" by this up and coming Irish artist, Diane Jennings. Here's the link to help you find it: ruclips.net/video/qrmlvf5MeRY/видео.html (Side note: I fell in love with the song when I first heard it 5-ish years ago...and still love it today. So there's that.)
An interesting video made enjoyable with the addition of your wonderful facial expressions. I don't think I have ever seen them before. Was ED equally blindsided, or is she immune to such things? The repeated shift between the melodic and intense portions of the song reminds me of the band Jinjer. Their song _Pisces_ is a popular target of RUclips channels that feature reaction videos. The reactions to the song often include similar expressions of surprise from the channel host(s), deservedly so. Check it out sometime. The singer does things with her voice that seem impossible to accomplish.
Checkout B.Y.O.B. and or Sugar next. My 2 personal favorite SOAD songs. However there is tons of other great ones for sure. Serg is on the short list of greatest male vocalists of the 90s. With Cornell and Layne Staley.
well...actually the way the name came about is they originally wanted to name it suicide, but the record label said no...so they cut suicide in half, hence Chop Suey.
Not sure if this is true but I heard that they grabbed a bible and randomly opened a page when they found the passage “Father into your hands I command my spirit.” They used it in the song. If that is true, super cool.
The title reminds me of the song Frankenstein by The Edgar Winter Group. Winter called it that because it was put together from pieces of other songs he'd been working on. It has nothing to do with the Mary Shelley story. It would be a good song to react to. I think you'd recognize the opening riff. You may know another song called "Chop Suey," from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "Flower Drum Song." It's about mainstream American perceptions of what it means to be Chinese. Chop suey is a Chinese-American dish, invented in the U.S., and considered inauthentic by many in the Chinese-American community. On the other hand, chow mein (which you've had) is just stir-fried egg noodles ("chow"" means stir-fried, and "mein" means egg noodles). Chow mein can have different things mixed into it, like meat and vegetables, and is an authentic Chinese dish. BTW, water chestnuts are different from regular chestnuts. They're called that because they grow in water and look a little like regular chestnuts, but they're very crunchy, and don't have much flavor of their own (regular chestnuts grow on trees, are much softer, and are quite sweet). The Avril Lavigne replacement theory is like the old "Paul is dead" rumors. In 1966, some people started claiming that Paul McCartney had died in a car crash and had been replaced with a lookalike. Fans would go over the lyrics of Beatles' songs looking for clues, and since a lot of their songs were cryptic (especially the ones written by John Lennon), they had no trouble finding support for their ideas. In some cases, Lennon may have deliberately put clues into his lyrics just to mess with people. Charles Manson had ties to the music industry. The Beach Boys song "Never Learn Not to Love" is an altered version of "Cease to Exist," which Manson wrote. Dennis Wilson introduced Manson to a record producer, but he never got a contract. A bunch of songs were put on a do-not-play list after 9/11 by Clear Channel, the largest owner of radio stations in the U.S. (the company is now called iHeartMedia). Some of these you can understand, like "Highway to Hell" by AC/DC and "Crash and Burn" by Savage Garden. Others were just silly, like "The Boy from New York City" by The Ad Libs and "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins. Some were inexplicable, like "Dancing in the Street" by Martha and the Vandellas and "Ruby Tuesday" by The Rolling Stones. There's a Wikipedia page devoted to this list of banned songs.
I didn't know about the band songs. The ones that you say don't make sense I kind of get, if you consider that there were accusations that people who had originally come from those countries were celebrating on rooftops
This is the most rockin' song about you-know-what. If you want to hear the smoothest, coolest song about you-know-what (and you are otherwise mentally healthy and happy), check out "Do Not Try This At Home" by Felix Da Housecat.
If one of the Nordic or Eastern European countries choose them to be their entry for the Eurovision Song Contest they might do better than some of the madcap entries from Finland, Norway and others of late.
"BYOB" is "Bring You Own Bombs" System is EXTREMELY political and a bunch of their songs are criticism of like the Iraq War and the American military bombing the Middle East, for instance. Hence why they ALSO have no interest in performing at the VMAs like NSYNC or Britney Spears. They're singing about dark and serious subjects that they take seriously. They're an Armenian-American band, which is where a lot of their Middle Eastern sound comes from. They have ongoing support to have the Armenian Genocide officially recognized, and have multiple songs referencing it.

I was surprised you didn't react to this song back then, but I didn't comment anything xD
Definitely on my "drive fast/workout" playlist! Cheers Diane! 💚
ps- the comment about Rush was definitely on the money - their albums are works of art, lyrically and musically and the art on the album covers. Presto and Moving Pictures are my two favorite albums from them.
Awesome! Thank you! Maybe we’ll try them soon
For a deeper song, incredible metal, and some of the best musicianship... You should check out "Cemetery Gates" by Pantera. But the long version, *NOT* the official music video.
hypnotize, byob, sugar
Wake Up (wake up)! Grab a brush and put on a little make-up!! Hard to believe this song is 23 years old. Seems like Y2K was only yesterday! How time flies, especially when one begins to age...like fine wine though! Enjoyed your reaction, Irish Girl Thanks for the musical journey!
Gracias! It’s quite bossy actually when you think about it!
Good video.
I was going through my "liked videos" and ran into something that would make for an awesome reaction...though, I fear that you might have heard it before.
It's called "Rising Roads" by this up and coming Irish artist, Diane Jennings.
Here's the link to help you find it: ruclips.net/video/qrmlvf5MeRY/видео.html
(Side note: I fell in love with the song when I first heard it 5-ish years ago...and still love it today.
😂 is it?
Ohhh I have many faces up my sleeve
Checkout B.Y.O.B. and or Sugar next. My 2 personal favorite SOAD songs. However there is tons of other great ones for sure. Serg is on the short list of greatest male vocalists of the 90s. With Cornell and Layne Staley.
At 0:25 Chop Suey and Chow Mein is making Me Hungry need to add some eggs rolls too.
Haha sure thing!
@@DianeJennings Very True Some Sweet and Sour Chicken with the sauce and stir fried vegetables and fried rice too
my favorite song from soad is "sugar". "b.y.o.b' and "toxicity"are cool too
I'd love to see a reaction video of The Hu's song Wolf Totem. They are a Mongolian Metal band, with a very distinct sound.
well...actually the way the name came about is they originally wanted to name it suicide, but the record label said no...so they cut suicide in half, hence Chop Suey.
When 911 happened I already had this cd. It really had an impact on me and my views.
I’m not familiar with that one actually! Great info as always thanks
I didn't know about the band songs. The ones that you say don't make sense I kind of get, if you consider that there were accusations that people who had originally come from those countries were celebrating on rooftops
And it happened on a Tuesday morning
Thanks Diane! This type of music is not really my cup of tea, but I always appreciate being exposed to something new (well, new for me anyway 😎).
Glad you enjoyed it! I guess we’re keeping open minds. Good to see what’s out there
@@DianeJennings absolutely!
After this, something more chill and giggles. "Lounge Against the Machine"
😂😂😂 very good one Tony! Your best ever dare I say 😂😂😂
Diane goes on quite a journey
I try to take interesting twists and turns 😊
@@DianeJennings please stretch first, don't want you getting cramps
Chop soui was an American dish created to feed the Chinese railroad workers building our transcontinental railroad.
0:31 I get the 2 confused as well 😅
"BYOB" is "Bring You Own Bombs"
System is EXTREMELY political and a bunch of their songs are criticism of like the Iraq War and the American military bombing the Middle East, for instance.
