I seem to remember reading that Chris Cornell wanted an apocalypse video, appropriate for the lyrics, but he really wanted a HAPPY apocalypse! So they used early 90's CG effects - which were just becoming a thing - to create the exaggerated creepy happy faces.

My favorite Soundgarden song! I grew up in the 80s with MTV so we were used to crazy videos, doesn't affect how I hear the music, but for some it can distract from the incredible music & vocals. Amazing song.
Honestly, it's videos like this one that made me just not watch videos for 90s bands. Adam's little art projects with no obvious connection to the songs!
Really enjoyed this video. Have no expectations or experience with grunge, so this was very enjoyable. I agree that the video production values were very high for the times.
There was a park in the middle of downtown Seattle where there were chimes and an assortment of musical paraphernalia that was known as the Soundgarden.
You should definitely check out the song Cochise by Audioslave for Cornell’s upper register vocal range and for the awesome fireworks that go off during the entire song
In the Music Video is looks like the blackhole in outer space in the universe it pulling everyone to outer space with the gravity making them look tripped out. The Flashing lights and effects also do that too.
I know they ruled his death a suicide but there was so much more behind it than him just hanging himself. Its a damn shame. I truly believe he was just getting started as a solo artist and that everything before was just the tip of the iceberg. RIP Chris ❤
I saw Soundgarden perform in 1996 at Lollapalooza in Vermont. Also saw Ramones and Metallica that day. Chris did Black Hole Sun by himself, which was nice as it was constantly on the radio and MTV at that time.
Together with "Black" from Pearl Jam this song is my favorite. I avoid this song when I am depressed, but when I am fine I can shed tears without killing myself. It is so beautiful.
Now that you've heard the song, seen the video, and know a few things about the band, please go watch Norah Jones' version which was performed less than a week after Chris died on the very stage they performed their last show together as a band. It may one of the greatest tributes to a friend I have ever heard.
Thanks Diane! This is perhaps the only song of theirs I know. Very trippy video, the stuff nightmares come from. It is sad to see so many musicians you have reacted to had ended their lives intentionally, unintentionally or somewhere in between. 😢
This song took me back to my early teens. Cornell had such a tragic life. The old saying is true "money can't buy happiness". You can have everything, and nothing all at once.
Cornell was one of the breakout front an and singers of the area that I now live in, the PNW, Seattle was the scene he was in part born in. I still remember the night the news came across that he died(by his own hand as it was later reported). I still remember him just showing up on the local talk show The Men's Room. Not because he was promoting a new album, or an ongoing tour, or really anything else. He literally was just in the area and wanted to sit down and "talk to the guys". Guys that he got to know over the years and wanted to spend time with. That was like a month before his dose was publicised and all of Seattle went through a "Black Day" (I was there that night. Somber puts it lightly to say the least). I still remember trying to verify that he actually died, then how he died, then processing it, because it pissed he off, given I at an early age also tried to off myself and knew what that process was (for me at least) like. The article that I, in fairness, hastily wrote, is still out there explaining most of this; I just don't know if it's appropriate to post it here even if I can. Short story being, it never had to happen. He said himself, ON STAGE, "I feel sorry for the next show", and NO ONE PICKED UP ON THAT. Pretty sure at 10 I had less signs than that, and had my younger brother hadn't Runa cross me I might not be here to say as much. I apologize. Didn't mean to get into a rant. It s a good song, one I've performed quite a few times. Never actually saw the music video though, that was... interesting to say the least. Glad you enjoyed it.
Soundgarden was a long-time Seattle hard rock band that became known for pioneering “Alternative/Grunge” music along with Pearl Jam and Nirvana, although most of them would consider themselves just to be hard rock bands. Their lead guitarist and drummer recently recorded an album with the bassist from Nirvana and several different singers called “3rd Secret.” Chris later formed Audioslave with the musicians from Rage Against the Machine. He also sang the song “You know My Name” for the James Bond movie “Casino Royale.”
There is a sculpture called Black Hole Sun at the Asian art museum and an art installation called The Sound Garden at the NOAA station that plays music with the wind in Seattle and the band is from there, so I'm guessing that is where the names come from.
I learned today with you how blackhole sun name came up name. All these years, I always though it was a Einstein and outer space blackhole in the universe.
Right in the heart of my generation but not having cable I have to admit this is the first time I ever saw how bizarre this video to one of the most iconic songs was.
@@michaelbirke6050 if you listen to the kids themselves, Grunge gave voice to what they were already feeling, not the other way around. They couldn't find a place in the synth heavy pop music of the 80s. Grunge is essentially a revival of 70's metal with lyrics that (while frequently insensible because of how metaphorical, poetic, or personal they are) moved away from the love songs that they couldn't relate to, towards the start of the social justice movements that are still here today.
@@Bramble451 Thank you for your thoughtful and introspective comment. I do feel sad for the nineties generation. Question is why that generation was feeling abandonment, loneliness and depression and did the recording industry genuinely care or just feed it by perpetuating it by a rare and unexpected commercial success of Nirvana’s “Nevermind”. Please don’t try to convince me that the underlying motivation was quote “social injustice and change”. Name me one thing Rage Against The Machine changed except their bank account. It was all about aesthetics. Tom Morrello storming back and forth sure looked angry. Even the most successful band to come out of the nineties, Pearl Jam, talked the talk but in the end did they change any mindsets? Eddie Vetter just became friends with Bruce Springsteen. Greed and money always rears its ugly head. Bookend the grunge era with Linken Park. One doesn’t even have to close one’s eyes to see the darkness. Tragically Curt Cobain, Chester Bennington and the singer whose band and video started this conversation Chris Cornell all took their own lives. That is not by coincidence. There is a reason that many comments on RUclips from people lament that they never had a chance to experience the music of the sixties and early seventies. You want to know why? It’s what is sadly missing in grunge. Creativity. Nirvana set the tone and provided the blueprint which countless bands followed to the delight of the record companies. Consequently that’s what that generation was fed. That’s where my original use of the word sad comes from. No I didn’t grow up in the nineties but I did listen to alternative/grunge/metal on the radio and very rarely heard anything hopeful, encouraging or positive. I’m putting this all in context after listening to sixty years of music. I don’t disagree with your comment, I just hope you can see from my perspective. It’s even more ironic that the comment section of Diane’s video starts out with comments about suicide and prevention. Honestly, this is the first time I’ve ever seen this.I sincerely hope that she limits her first listens from this era. Talk about karma. I’m looking up at the top of my screen and she’s first listening to Alice In Chains “Down in a Hole”. Why did Layne Staley’s name come to mind? See, I’m getting caught up in it. Sorry. Will try to end this on a positive note. Stay safe and well.🎸✌️☮️😊
Chris Cornell seemed to be one of those guys that was universally respected by the other big grunge bands from Seattle, either from a musician's standpoint or directly having friendships with members of those other bands or their management. He had one of best voices in rock history and seemed to be an unselfish worker when it came to making music. Definitely look into his hits with Temple of the Dog and Audioslave! He was a true legend to the genre of rock and seemed earnest in trying to elevate those around him.
Definitely not just a product of a corporate think-tank. Soundgarden was the first grunge band to sign a major record deal though. They would have been the face of grunge if their early stuff wasn't so incredibly heavy that it just couldn't possibly cross over into mainstream. Superunknown is still quite dark and brooding as well, but there's significantly more pop sensibility to it and songs like "Black Hole Sun" coupled with multiple issues surrounding other grunge bands at the time propelled them into the spotlight as the biggest name of the genre left standing in '94. As noted in the quote you read, Cornell wasn't particularly happy with that however and saw the superficial nature of it all for what it really was.
Great Friday Diane Don't feel bad that you did not know who Soundgarden was. I grew up in the 80's and 90's and I STILL did not know who they were either. Sure I may have heard their songs on the radio but I wouldn't have known the name of the band. many times I even confused them with Savage Garden.)) "Cochise" is the name of a Chiricahua Apache tribal / war leader (one of my ancestors). It is pronounced as "Koh-cheese". In Apache language is pronounced slightly different (K'uu-ch'ish). His name means having the quality / strength of oak. Yes, it was tragic how Chris Cornell died. Just as tragic as Robin William dying in the same way.(((( Yes You should eventually get to Rage Against the Machine and Savage Garden. Have yourself a wonderful weekend. Don't forget that you are a sweet and remarkable woman!! ))
Towards the end, the band he had formed in the 2000s was Audioslave. I admit I don’t know that much of their stuff, but “I am the Highway” and “Show Me how to Live” are great songs to check out.

There was a park in the middle of downtown Seattle where there were chimes and an assortment of musical paraphernalia that was known as the Soundgarden.
It's good to hear you are coming to visit us here in Chicago. Make sure to stop and have a meal at Ed Debevic's for some real Chicago hospitality.
You should definitely check out the song Cochise by Audioslave for Cornell’s upper register vocal range and for the awesome fireworks that go off during the entire song
Chris is the GOAT
In the Music Video is looks like the blackhole in outer space in the universe it pulling everyone to outer space with the gravity making them look tripped out. The Flashing lights and effects also do that too.
Great vid. Soundgarden is one of my favorites from the 90s
Soundgarten was a Seattle-based band (my hometown) and the name came from a Seattle park with wind charms, etc. Hence, a sound garden.
Audioslave songs to consider are Like A Stone, Show Me How to Live, Cochise. All are absolutely amazing as pretty much every thing Chris sang was gold
It feels like more than a coincidence? Like, tragedy and talent go, hand-in-hand, or some thing… So many of them.
This song took me back to my early teens. Cornell had such a tragic life. The old saying is true "money can't buy happiness". You can have everything, and nothing all at once.
I totally agree! People who think otherwise are so naïve. Wish for happiness, never money.
I miss Chris’ singing. He is the true voice of my generation, GenX
I remember recording this video off of MTV back then. Got to love that 90's era CGI.
Thanks for reacting to it Diane!
No problem 😊
Soundgarden was a long-time Seattle hard rock band that became known for pioneering “Alternative/Grunge” music along with Pearl Jam and Nirvana, although most of them would consider themselves just to be hard rock bands.
Their lead guitarist and drummer recently recorded an album with the bassist from Nirvana and several different singers called “3rd Secret.”
Chris later formed Audioslave with the musicians from Rage Against the Machine.
My goodness this young woman is certainly quite extraordinary!!!
Hey Diane this a good video and the last live stream was amazing.
Glad you enjoyed it! That’s really nice of you to say so
I learned today with you how blackhole sun name came up name. All these years, I always though it was a Einstein and outer space blackhole in the universe.
Right in the heart of my generation but not having cable I have to admit this is the first time I ever saw how bizarre this video to one of the most iconic songs was.
Chris Cornell was in several bands, Soundgarden, Audioslave, and Temple of the Dog, to name a few of the best known bands. He was a very talented man.
This was one of my favorite bands. I'm sad that for some reason I didn't get notified about this post! Just happened upon it.
I agree with you with the philosophy on when life gets very difficult; its a good outlook.
You agree that people should do heroin and rack up a ton of debt if they’re depressed? Heh. Stupidest thing I’ve heard in a long time.
This was a big, big video in the 90s. It was definitely a benchmark of a particular era in time.
6:24 Diane’s expression here🤣 I forgot how grim this song was
The whole grunge era of the nineties was one grim song after another. And millions of kids bought into it. So sad.
Great Friday Diane
Don't feel bad that you did not know who Soundgarden was. I grew up in the 80's and 90's and I STILL did not know who they were either. Sure I may have heard their songs on the radio but I wouldn't have known the name of the band. many times I even confused them with Savage Garden.))
"Cochise" is the name of a Chiricahua Apache tribal / war leader (one of my ancestors). It is pronounced as "Koh-cheese". In Apache language is pronounced slightly different (K'uu-ch'ish). His name means having the quality / strength of oak.
Yes, it was tragic how Chris Cornell died. Just as tragic as Robin William dying in the same way.((((
Yes You should eventually get to Rage Against the Machine and Savage Garden. Have yourself a wonderful weekend. Don't forget that you are a sweet and remarkable woman!! ))
This is 1 of my favorite songs!!!!
Faith No More is a great band. Their second singer Mike Patton is outstanding. They're kind of alternative metal mixed in with some funk.
Noted!
Towards the end, the band he had formed in the 2000s was Audioslave. I admit I don’t know that much of their stuff, but “I am the Highway” and “Show Me how to Live” are great songs to check out.
Agreed, high production value in the Black Hole Sun video. I would recommend another video with a lot of video tricks, "Wild" by Royal Teeth. You have to watch it several times to catch everything that's going on in the video.
Which older songs do you still listen to after you reviewed them? Are there any you fell in such deep love with, you went back to and still listen to today?
One of my favorite songs featured Chris Cornel, and Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam in a band called "Temple Of The Dog". The song title was "Hunger Strike".
