Inspiring. Hope to see you on the trail or summits on the air. I did 220 miles SOBO from HF in May 2018. I am glad you are on the trail again. Your videos helped me remember SNP hike. Don KF4CU in Blairsville GA.
Thanks for the education on your "portable" backpack rig... Glad to see you are out and about. Enjoy your day trips and I'll catch up soon. I'm drinking from a firehose with the new job. Say hello to GG for me... RAK
Summits on the air is a way to get ham radio operators out of the ham shack and into the outdoors. It is definitely more radio than hiking, but I have put in some big hiking day to work the radio on just one Mountain top. Radio equipment and batteries can get HEAVY LOL
Hey brother, just wanted to wish you and Gucci Girl a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I have been looking for a few RUclipsrs to follow on the AT in 2019 and I thought about your 2018 trek and how hard you worked for it and how much effort you and G.G. gave. My thru-hike attempt is only 14 months, 0 weeks, 5 days, 11 hours 34 minutes and 30 seconds away....not that I have a countdown app on my iPhone of anything. lol.
Nice video. I have learned some new stuff. Ohiopyle! Yeah, it is a pretty sleepy place. I don't live too far from there and often backpack in the Bear Run Nature Reserve and Quebec Run Wild Area.
Nice video need to do one showing how one can get into radio and radio setup from start to finish. Let me know when your in the SNP. Maybe get togeather some time.
I get that too. I'm just sitting here for 3 weeks resting my foot from the last trip and I'm more sore in the morning than when I was working out hard..
Don't know a lot about SOTA but found this to be a very interesting video. Also, always interested to see what others use as their EDC. Ain't it great to be an American?! Thanks.
Nice to see you're getting out. Looking forward to more videos "N1ZB" Have you considered just giving support to GG so she can do more miles and carry less until she catches up than hike together? Just a thought. 73 N1ZB
She doesn't want to do it alone. So we will section hike together. She has 361 miles to catch up and while she is doing that I will be doing sota in the sections that I already have done. 73 W3CDW
"This is a drive-in SOTA, only walking 2.5 miles up and 2.5 miles down!" You are a true hiker to consider 5 miles as a drive-in!! 🤔🤔 Wish I saw you were out activating, and I would have turned on the radio!
Wow, my app was not pushing any notifications, sorry about that. We are hang low for now and will get out this hiking season to do trail magic. No hiking for me, my knee will need surgery.
Well the dipole antenna I was using is cut for 20/40 meters so a tuner is not needed. I also had a long/random length wire antenna that I do use a tuner for and its rated for 10 watts?
I have been thinking about you two. We are 2nd attempting our thru-Hike. What are you doing this year? Is GucciGirl going to hike alone? It’s strange to watch people’s videos for so long and then not see them any more. Just wandering how you two are??
Gucci Girl and Grumpy we will be leaving from Dicks Gap tomorrow. It has been really cold. But very excited to be out of Georgia tomorrow. Thank you for responding
By chance was that your MOS in the Navy. In my days in the Army , we had antennas twice the size of drive in movie screens and bounced our signals off the troposphere. Antennas were good mortar targets.
Here's a helpful link to grumpy's earlier video on Ham radio and SOTA (Summits on the air). Thanks, W3CDW, I'll be trying to get my station back up and ready to find you. ruclips.net/video/RzQBtkDUGKs/видео.html 73 DE KD8TE
How did I miss this? Oh, the hurricane. That explains it.
Great video. Glad to see you are getting back out. That hammock setup is sweet.
Came here for the SOTA.
Great video. Thanks.
Hopefully I will be doing some activation in Shenandoah National park next week. Thanks for watching
Never knew there was such a thing as SOTA. Very interesting. Good idea to stay "hiker" active and have fun with SOTA.
Because of doing a Sota activation in Maryland that is were I saw my in person real life white blaze. That started the A.T. hiking bug

Thanks Don. I will be out in 2019 picking up some more miles and doing SOTA
Great plan 👍 it will be so much fun for you two to hike together!
We are working hard on getting these plans together. 🤞
Very interesting.
It a good way for me to keep the legs moving along with getting back into second place
Thanks G this was an interesting video. Happy that you are out and about.
At least one outing a week
Thanks for the education on your "portable" backpack rig... Glad to see you are out and about. Enjoy your day trips and I'll catch up soon. I'm drinking from a firehose with the new job. Say hello to GG for me... RAK
Will do. My go rig is lightweight but heavier than my thru hiking pack
Thanks for the update. Very cool setup and I'm a S&W guy too !
Nice
Hiking, hammocks, guns, amature radio cant go wrong with that. 73 K3GLD Monongahela
Sorry about being late on this response. My YT app has not been pushing any notifications. I think I do have a good selection of hobbies. "73" W3CDW
That was very intresting!
I still need to stay active and get back up to second place in W3/ Pennsylvania
good to see you back posting - and I am learning about SOTA
Very good. Maybe some day we can make a contact over the free radio waves. All kinds of hiking and sota trips in the works
Good to hear from you, Grumpy, even if it's not a "hiking" video. Never heard of SOTA. It seems very interesting.

No worries, hope everything is going well.@@GucciGirlandGrumpy
Sweet ,I feel like i learned some new cool shit today..thanks grump..This is to cool..oh and I'm digging the 9...
If I was more sure about the knee, I might have taken the Sig 226 40 S&W, it's a little heavier
Nice video. I have learned some new stuff. Ohiopyle! Yeah, it is a pretty sleepy place. I don't live too far from there and often backpack in the Bear Run Nature Reserve and Quebec Run Wild Area.
Than you know that they were not ready for me that morning. I got looks like I was a three headed freak from mars lol
Yep. I have gotten some of those head turns a few times. Last time I went up that way, I was blasting White Snake out the windows.
Nice video need to do one showing how one can get into radio and radio setup from start to finish. Let me know when your in the SNP. Maybe get togeather some time.
I will do that next week when I head out for another summit. SNP will be coming up soon
I get that too. I'm just sitting here for 3 weeks resting my foot from the last trip and I'm more sore in the morning than when I was working out hard..
Dude, it is crazy. I truly hurt when I am not hiking, go figure
merry christmas to both of you
My app was not pushing any notifications. Sorry but later Merry Christmas to you also
@@GucciGirlandGrumpy no sweat...:)
Don't know a lot about SOTA but found this to be a very interesting video. Also, always interested to see what others use as their EDC. Ain't it great to be an American?! Thanks.
Yes my friend it is great being an Americans. The ham radio thing and hiking go arm and arm.
Great to hear from you brother. “73” and a “Jeep Wave” from W1LDE🎤🖐
You know that it is time for you to put up a 40 meter dipole so you can start making some contacts with me on my activations
Although I haven’t spent much time on HF, I’d be willing to try that sometime👍
When I an around your way doing some summits get ready
Where are the 2019 hikes? Let’s go Grumpy
I base my whole life on not toning it down if White Zombie is playing...
Saw them live in 1999
Lol, I was having fun. Driving too fast, music WAY TOO LOAD

I do have friends who are DXers - they focus though on trying to pick up as many AM radio stations as they can
I made a sota contact with someone who thought I was on AM and I thought he was on ssb. and at the end of the day he went into the log book as ssb

I am going to try and get out once a week starting yesterday
Where have ya’ll been? 😉

Gucci Girl and Grumpy dangit! Sorry about your knee. 😢
Interesting stuff on ham radio..I forgot you did that... A cheap but dependable 9mm..Taurus G2C...Check it out sometime 🔫🔫🔫
Everything guns is my motto. I enjoy being an American
SOTA looks like fun! Do you ever run an antenna tuner in a mobile setup like this?
Well the dipole antenna I was using is cut for 20/40 meters so a tuner is not needed. I also had a long/random length wire antenna that I do use a tuner for and its rated for 10 watts?
Yes, I meant for the long wire. It's really cool you can work from the comfort of a hammock and the beauty of a remote mountain top.
That was the first time from the hammock so there is a learning curve but I thought I was doing well
I have been thinking about you two. We are 2nd attempting our thru-Hike. What are you doing this year? Is GucciGirl going to hike alone? It’s strange to watch people’s videos for so long and then not see them any more. Just wandering how you two are??

@@mikekathy2620 That's great. The cool weather is what I like. Are you going to be doing any videos. I just checked and there wasn't any content?
We are on the trek. Mike & Kathy

Lol, no I have been a welder since I was 18 years old. I started looking into the radio stuff about 4-5 years back
What is your call sign Grumpy?

Back when I was laying on the ground. Now I relax in a hammock while doing sota.
