Hi Charlie I retired about two years ago and last May I bought a Hornby starter set to amuse the grandchildren. Now I am completely hooked and have built the baseboards for a 14feet by 8 feet layout which will be (broadly) 1950’s Yorkshire themed with you and half a dozen other RUclipsrs as my guides! I was wondering the same thing at the start, but not because of the uphill movement but because of the closeness to the running line in the downhill direction.

Hi Charlie, In response to your questions: 1.) I model west coast American railroads (BNSF/UP - The Colorado Joint Line) in HO; 2.) I haven't seen derail points in my travels, what I have seen are bright yellow metal "derail" devices, either portable clamp-on or a remote control devices, that stand up from the top of the rail and lift the wheel off track to derail the car if the car is traveling fast enough. Many times, the device will just stop the car from rolling further. I enjoy your videos and enjoy learning more about railroad practices on the other side of the "puddle." Keep 'em coming, Bruce

I model in 00 gauge using Peco code 100 for both my rail tracks and tram tracks, modelling the 1950s period, but no particular location, it's just a freelance layout. Possibly the only guy on RUclips who is combining trains and trams in one layout. Cheers for now Geoff

Hi Charlie. In my childhood it was OO gague. Now returning to modelling in my 60's it's still oo as the costs are sometimes beyoned belief. Anything smaller is to difficult to work on, anything bigger can't finance it. Thanks for the videos as they are a great help to us mature guys start again. Cheers from Wales
Hi Charlie, as a general tip when drilling your 10mm hole for the point motor arm. Drill an additional two 1.5mm holes in line with a sleeper so when viewed from underneath a line can be drawn to indicate the position of the point motor to ensure perfect linear arm travel. I model HO/OO in Australia with also some HON3.5 for our 3 feet 6 inches. Catch points are very important and we have them even in shunting yards. Mainlines use them where a branch joins the mainline so I would put a tortoise motor on it as it will provide a little more Realism but Charlie it is your railway so it is your choice. Really good video and I have learnt a lot. Thanks Charlie.

Hi Charlie, I’m predominantly 00 Gauge (Peco code 100). I run mostly steam outline models of LNER, LMS and early BR stock. I enjoy the construction aspect (including colour coded wiring) as much as operating at realistic speeds. Now on my 4th major layout and utilising MERG CBus. for point and signal control of my analogue controlled trains. I’ve been in our wonderful hobby 74yrs and still learning, as others have correctly remarked. Thoroughly enjoying your layout build, Charlie! I have to build the lift-up section on my benchwork, and then it's to the plywood laying stage.
Interesting to see your methods. I've had a lot of problems with my Peco point motors and microswitches on my new 00 gauge Southern Region layout and was about to rip them out and replace with a more expensive but reliable make. However, I saw in one thread a recommendation that if the Peco point motor screws are loosened a little the motors will work better....and, blow me, it worked a treat! Now to paint the rails, apply ballast then start constructing the curved platform. Mine will be timber built with exposed supports and bracing. I'll construct it in situ and will constantly check clearances and gaps with long coaching stock as I glue the subframes in position. Being a branch terminus there'll be the one platform with a bay, so not as complex as on your mainline, Charlie. Your Channel is the top one for modelling as far as I'm concerned!
I like the old people approach to the solutions. You come across precisely to your audience. You could save a lot of the coplication with the wiring if you use Cobal IP pointmotors in stead as they each have their own decoder built in. Saves you a lot of wiring and do away with central placed pointcotrollers for each four pointmotors.

I've had a couple of boxes of HO track and other bits and pieces since my oldest grandson was born 32 years ago with the intent that we would do it together but his interests were elsewhere. Now that I'm close to retiring I want to do something with it. I really am enjoying your videos and will be using them for reference as I go.

Hi Charlie, I found your channel by doing some RUclips searches on getting my old childhood HO model train up and running again after 40 years or so. It's just an old Tyco, but I thought my daughters would enjoy seeing it run. I'm blown away and I'm hooked on watching your videos. While I'll never have anything even remotely like your layout or your train sets, I enjoy watching a man who knows what he's doing build things like that. You pay great attention to detail, but as a compliment, you do so by not being annoying about it. For example you spread glue to do the job, but it doesn't have to be "just so" - like perfect thickness and only to the perfect width and such as the track. Meanwhile I can appreciate the tidiness of your wiring! Man, that's incredible! I've subscribed and looking forward to seeing what you have next!

Just want to let you know how much I've enjoyed it I am an N scale model railroader kind of Florida closet model railroader because I don't have the Room although I am waiting for my teenagers to politely move on but that hasn't happened yet so again thank you look forward to many more videos and I really do appreciate what you did for that young man whose dad had cancer. I am new to model rail way and have a 00 set with Dcc to start me off I have limited space so will be modeling a branch line . But I find all this bus wire and dropper wirers all a little daunting at the moment so enjoy you updates very informative and helpfully. Stay safe.
I am so glad you remembered to put the screw into the tortoise motor actuator arm, i was watching the progress thinking "I hope he remembers to fit the screw". But you spotted it just in time! Nice to see the boards back in place, gives a nice sense of progress being made.

I'm HO here in the states! Love your videos. About a year ago my God Mother moved out of her residence where I had a few boxes stored. I'm 61yrs old. In the boxes was my fathers model trains, the Sabbath Mountain Railroad. It was packed up in 1974 when I was 11. Much to my delight several of his locomotives ran just great straight out of the box 50years later. Including a shay that was one of my favorites. Now I'm educating myself and have built a table for the next version of the S.M R.R. I look forward to your next video! I want to go DCC while still running a few of my dad's DC locos. I have to figure that out...

Another chilled out but informative & timely video, thanks. I have some Marcway catch points to build up and never really understood what they do, so your explanation and prototype pics were a great help. I also picked up that Woodland Scenics riser pack (x2) at a train fair over Xmas for a great price so I now need to backtrack through your videos to see how you installed it. Plan is to use it for a raised HOe logging line up into the forest to give some depth. Looking at all your motors and decoders under the board (like mine), I did muse on how far away this all was now to thedays I had a 6x4 board with cotton pulls for the points with bolt nuts on the end to pull them....the days of when necessity (and lack of money) was the mother of invention. Hi Charlie, I enjoy the detail that you provide. I model in N scale and I seem to be one of the very few American modelers (I am in Alabama) who is creating a layout based on an English village. I have a number of Hornby "Lyddle End" buildings (over 150) and some wonderful engines and wagons. Just now beginning the layout and planning track.

Great Video as always Charlie. I used to model in N Gauge, but following my father passing away a number of years ago I inherited a load of OO Gauge stuff (including re-acquiring a load of Hornby stuff I had as a child!!!), so I'm now definitely a OO gauge guy!

Hi Charlie, if you put that bright LED inspection lamp on underneath the board you will produce a pin point of light through the hole in the point that you are trying to poke the actuator arm of the point motor through. It makes it a bit easier. Cheers Charlie

I’ve had a keen interest in British based railways ever since I received my first Tri-ang train set for Christmas over 50 years ago now. Interesting to see your methods. I've had a lot of problems with my Peco point motors and microswitches on my new 00 gauge Southern Region layout and was about to rip them out and replace with a more expensive but reliable make. However, I saw in one thread a recommendation that if the Peco point motor screws are loosened a little the motors will work better....and, blow me, it worked a treat! Now to paint the rails, apply ballast then start constructing the curved platform. Mine will be timber built with exposed supports and bracing. I'll construct it in situ and will constantly check clearances and gaps with long coaching stock as I glue the subframes in position. Being a branch terminus there'll be the one platform with a bay, so not as complex as on your mainline, Charlie. Your Channel is the top one for modelling as far as I'm concerned!

I like the old people approach to the solutions. You come across precisely to your audience. You could save a lot of the coplication with the wiring if you use Cobal IP pointmotors in stead as they each have their own decoder built in. Saves you a lot of wiring and do away with central placed pointcotrollers for each four pointmotors.
I do understand Henrik but but I try to make things a little simpler for the subscribers. Also Tortoise are quieter!

I've had a couple of boxes of HO track and other bits and pieces since my oldest grandson was born 32 years ago with the intent that we would do it together but his interests were elsewhere. Hi Charlie, I found your channel by doing some RUclips searches on getting my old childhood HO model train up and running again after 40 years or so. It's just an old Tyco, but I thought my daughters would enjoy seeing it run. I'm blown away and I'm hooked on watching your videos. While I'll never have anything even remotely like your layout or your train sets, I enjoy watching a man who knows what he's doing build things like that. You pay great attention to detail, but as a compliment, you do so by not being annoying about it. For example you spread glue to do the job, but it doesn't have to be "just so" - like perfect thickness and only to the perfect width and such as the track. Meanwhile I can appreciate the tidiness of your wiring! Man, that's incredible! I've subscribed and looking forward to seeing what you have next!

I'm HO here in the states! Love your videos. About a year ago my God Mother moved out of her residence where I had a few boxes stored. I'm 61yrs old. In the boxes was my fathers model trains, the Sabbath Mountain Railroad. It was packed up in 1974 when I was 11. Much to my delight several of his locomotives ran just great straight out of the box 50years later. Including a shay that was one of my favorites. Now I'm educating myself and have built a table for the next version of the S.M R.R. I look forward to your next video! I want to go DCC while still running a few of my dad's DC locos. I have to figure that out...

Another chilled out but informative & timely video, thanks. I have some Marcway catch points to build up and never really understood what they do, so your explanation and prototype pics were a great help. I also picked up that Woodland Scenics riser pack (x2) at a train fair over Xmas for a great price so I now need to backtrack through your videos to see how you installed it. Plan is to use it for a raised HOe logging line up into the forest to give some depth. Looking at all your motors and decoders under the board (like mine), I did muse on how far away this all was now to thedays I had a 6x4 board with cotton pulls for the points with bolt nuts on the end to pull them....the days of when necessity (and lack of money) was the mother of invention. Hi Charlie, I enjoy the detail that you provide. I model in N scale and I seem to be one of the very few American modelers (I am in Alabama) who is creating a layout based on an English village. I have a number of Hornby "Lyddle End" buildings (over 150) and some wonderful engines and wagons. Just now beginning the layout and planning track.

Hi Charlie, if you put that bright LED inspection lamp on underneath the board you will produce a pin point of light through the hole in the point that you are trying to poke the actuator arm of the point motor through. It makes it a bit easier.

Despite having an N scale modern era layout, I enjoy your well presented videos and have been a subscriber to your channel for a while now. I’ve had a keen interest in British based railways ever since I received my first Tri-ang train set for Christmas over 50 years ago now.

My father thought me all of my railway modeling skills but those were in the old DC days, so, having just got my first grandchild, I thought I might like to pass it all on, but embrace DCC at the same time. Still in track planning mode also ( am considering avoiding first radius curves and sticking with second & third radius with maybe a fourth radius as passing loop!

They are called Tag Strips and squirestools.com stock them.
