  • On a hot rainy day, I finally got my first real jump on soul grinds on the new and improved P-rail! Super excited to finally get some decent jump on grinds. Now if I can just take it to the skatepark. . .

    Thankyou that's the most inspiring thing for skating I've seen. I skated from 97 to 2007 and now in 2024 I'm back. But I used to be sooo good but after some serious health stuff and injuries I'm starting from the beginning. It's been hard...but I have the love for it and just seeing this gave me hope again. Thankyou!! I'm 45 yrs old and I have to learn so much again. Be well!! Thankyou

      I mean its good to respect your child's wishes. A lot of parents dont and it can hurt their privacy... just look at a lot of influencers today. Im not saying you are wrong but the more respect you show the easier it is to have a good relationship

      He is always good with it and enjoys getting some of his new learnings on video. We really enjoy skating together and it has been a great way to spend time with him.

    Great work fellas!
    One piece of advice -
    Grinding is (counter-intuitively) MUCH easier and safer once you get used to approaching the rail with a bit more speed. With a bit more speed, the initial lock is smoother (way less risk of stickyness on the initial lock), the momentum makes balancing easier and falling off results in less risk of injury because the force of impact is lessened by the horizontal component of force (this also gives you the opportunity to roll tofurther absorb impact, which is basically always the best option if you can).
    Keep it up! ❤

      @theaverageoldguy  Месяц назад

      You are right about that, its just much so harder to commit to it when I am going faster! It is easier for me to jump with a little speed, I have a really hard time trying to get a stall from a standstill. Its all a work in progress and hopefully it will get easier and maybe less painful for me over time!

      @@theaverageoldguy youre doing it right taking it step by step, building muscle memory. That pvc is really great for learning cause it slides so good.

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  Месяц назад

      @@marcfreshart I am having a really hard time taking it to the ledges at the park. The height difference and ledge shape are really punishing my bad foot placement even when I switch to an antirocker setup there. Our parks lowest rail is a couple of inches higher still than the ledge and I haven't gotten onto that yet. Its been really frustrating and painful lately!

    • @marcfreshart
      @marcfreshart Месяц назад

      @@theaverageoldguy yeahh I can see that. With the pvc coping you’re locked on and balanced, whereas with a ledge there’s more room for error. Hence why bladers love round coping/ rails. I’m sure you’ve thought of it, but you could make a small ledge for the house with angle iron or that plastic decking board. It’s all about teaching your feet the feeling of each grind with a lot of repetition. Once you have that feeling, it’s easier to add speed and height into the mix. Hell, bring that pvc box to the skatepark and set it up in cool spots.
      I saw Seth try a royale. Tell him to make sure to squat straight down and not back or he’ll have some sore wrists and elbows from the classic slip out fall.

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  Месяц назад

      @@marcfreshart Seth is really working on that royale and that's a great tip. I think the 909's require a really steep angle with the combination of shallow "H" block and smallish soul plate, and he is having a tough time with it. He is about as flexible as Gumby though, so he'll get it eventually. For me, the royale and farv are both out of the question, I can't lay over on my arthritic knee more than a few degrees without excruciating pain, so I just avoid it. For me its all about trying to find what I can do with the least amount of pain.

    • @theaverageoldguy
      @theaverageoldguy  Месяц назад

      We have heard that, but man its hard to add speed when my failure rate is still well above 50%! I did make several in a row, but most of the back to back ones on the video are edits between several failures, and they really hurt my knee. That is something I am struggling with at the moment especially on the ledge at our local park, and trying to improve on.
