- The Manly Ferry Freshwater naviigating it its way across Sydney Heads in the safest and most comfortable way posible in big seas. The Manly Ferry Freshwater in this movie was navigated by Sydney Ferry Master Rob Gawthorne. Many people commute to work by the Manly Ferry daily and it is one of the most popular trips for any visitor to do when touring Sydney.
Good fun crossing The Heads
Impressive and interesting. Thank you.
That's what I love about Sydney - these gnarly days and the amazing harbour ferries.e
yeah i remember that whole week the weather was crazy, ive never had so much fun on the ferry!!
I remember during the 60s mum 'n dad, Friday or Saturday evening, would hear of big seas on the news and next day the family would be taken to Manly on the ferry. Some hair raising trips for primary school age kids.
Yes I came up from Melbourne, went accross on one of the old ones. Surprised the hell out of me.
Nice video Haig. I wasn't alive when this was filmed, only just at least! Please do a part 2 or whatever from a Gen 2, that would be put in the comedy section of youtube.
I wonder how safe and comfortable passengers will feel in the new little river ferries that are replacing these beautiful Freshwaters? I just hope they actually survive!
They passed with "flying colours". Literally flying.
That was just the course that the Master chose to take to avoid getting hit side on by the big waves. He then headed into the Eastern channel towards Circular Quay.
It’s strange when they head out the heads . I remember being able to see right down the cost one day on a hydrofoil. It was surfing some big waves.
Was on one of the old hydrofoils that went outside the heads and literally surfed in. It was extraordinary for such a small opening to the ocean. The waves were big.
I had that experience too.
Ha, that's how it was yesterday (and today, I guess)! It was the first time in my life that I experienced a whole bunch of people screaming in panic. I'm anything but badass, but the ride was fun! :D
Thanks for the explaination.
Iv been on one of these ferries when i was younger and when it sailed like this. omg it was ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING.
freaked the shit out of my little soul LOL.
i still remember to this day.
it made me hate boats and ships.
What happened right at the end there. Was the ferry turning back?
Wow...i hope it made it to circular quay 🤔🤔🤔🤔
As a kid I wagged school to ride the ferries anytime the seas were huge. . .
Good fun
I dont mind being on the Manly Ferry when it's like this since I'm seated, It's when I'm on my mate's 68 foot yacht when we hit a 6 foot freak wave and I'm up the front and have nothing to hold on to now that's when I really get the sh!ts with sailing, got pushed back a good 2 - 3 metres landed flat on my back and giving my nogging a floggin on the deck filmed it on my phone and all I can say is Thank God I didnt lose my phone great footage though of the wave rising then WHAM!! it hits
This is why I never leave Manly. Who needs the city ?? :-D
Much worse when I was on one, one evening in 1967 -- it was pitching up and down that bad, but also rolling from side to side much worse than that at the same time.
Yeah the famous yellow tip finned marker buoy shark. Plenty of other sharks about though, plenty
Video cut short ??? Why does the Ferry start turning at the end of this clip ?
I want to see part 2 now !!!
This video was taken from the ferry that was going in the opposite direction. Zoom lenses are difficult at the best of times. From another rocking ferry getting further and further away it was getting too difficult. The Manly Ferry mostly travels on inner harbour conditions except the crossing of the water between North and South Heads. We can not navigate directly across the Heads because the ferry gets aggressively rolled sideways. So we go out into the swell and kind of semi-surf back into the channel with the swell. Next time we have big swell I will try and do a part 2 for you.
Love this ride best few dollars entertainment around . Whenever I go to Sydney I hope the sea is rough so I can ride on the ferry. Been doing it since I was about 10 ( with my parents then). Love it when unsuspecting people get hit by rogue "wave" when they are out front. I have not grown up yet!!
why did the ferry stop at the end?
Turned back around and went inwards with the waves
LOL @ 1:38 I wish inside that FUUUUUUUN
@ornitorrinco01 no, i rided on the very front of the ferry on sunday they do warn you that you will get wet.. i got off dripping
much calmer onboard the filmers boat.
Hi Rowan Allen :)
Pfft... That's just a slight chop. Come to new zealand and cross cook strait in a southerly. There'll be shephards pie in ya knickers and the barf bags will need replenishing when your crossing involves 11m seas, driving blinding rain and 130km/h Southerly winds
Sailboard
WTF are those people doing? This ship should not go out in this weather.
mitsos76 it has to dude!!! It’s one of the busiest routes in the service of Sydney Ferries..!
They handle it no problem.
Them Hauls are built for it
You said this 5 years ago. The vessels that predominantly replaced these ones in 2021 can't do swells smaller than this without risk of falling apart. These ships can do seas up to 7 metres.
@@northernriverstransportvlogs they may not sink, but I wouldn't put my car in there.
