My problem with Neil singing about war so much is, he never fought in one. Maybe he's a coward or maybe not, but he certainly has no business singing about something he doesn't understand, and because of his extreme lack of understanding, he lacks objectivity. I do love love love his music, but he's way out of line writing lyrics about things he has no experience with. And no, growing up in the 60's doesn't give you actual war experience. He dishonors all the brave who have sacrificed it all so he can step all over their memories to sell a few albums. Maybe he should write a song about that. I wish him well, just leave politics and war out of your music. He also use to blow up animals with fireworks, so this guy isn't a true environmentalist either.
Only Neil Young can play like this, truthfully and deeply felt. Beautiful song, beautiful combination of high notes and bass lines. Greetings from Slovakia.
ABSOLUTELY MARVELOUS MY DARLING, I AM SURE IF HE SHOULD READ YOUR COMMENT (HE MOST LIKELY WON'T SEE IT) HE WOULD DEEPLY APPRECIATE YOUR KIND WORD'S....I CERTAINLY DO....THANK YOU SWEETIE 😊❤
Being from Slovakia, you must know a lot about both love and war. It's always nice for North Americans to hear from our Brothers across the Atlantic. I'm American and wish that we'd learn more about other places music.
Yes, well said. He has a complete ease with doing that. It's natural. Even the irony in his lyrics- when they seem to make no sense, even- works. "Oh, to live on Sugar Mountain...".
For this 60 year old Canadian who's seen Neil in concert a half dozen times both unplugged and electric, solo and with Crazy Horse it all comes down to either Neil or L'il Wayne. Seriously, see him if you ever get the chance. He still has it.
Neil hit me right in the heart with this one - makes me cry every time. On the subject: I'm thankful to say that I was lucky in love. And, I was lucky in war.
Anders Eklann One is lucky to come home alive after offering their body and mind to the war machine that is oh so profitable for those who make money on the deaths of innocents. It’s sad that young, idealistic soldiers are told how noble it is to fight for their country, when many times poor people who have no good jobs in their cities and are surrounded by recruiters who offer them a living wage to possibly die fighting in various conflicts that we IMO have no reason to involve our nation in except for the profit of the war contractors who will always find new ways to bring our soldiers into harms way for their own benefit. Many young people don’t have a clue what they are getting into, or what their goal really is. Unfortunately, It’s unbelievable what some people must do to make it through the experience of fighting “for their country,” as they call it. The soldiers are victims of an overly violent society that will do anything for money at times. I appreciate their willingness to protect our nation if necessary in a completely different respect. We are filled with people that go into conflict with the best of intentions! They often come home with extreme guilt for surviving their war experience. We have never had so many vets committing suicide because they are too often forgotten after coming home. There’s plenty of money for war, but little money for disabled and mentally tortured veterans who need help but money is scarce for their needs. There shouldn’t have to be charities for veterans because their government does not do their job for them when they get home. It’s Lucky if a soldier makes it back home alive and relatively intact in body and mind after heading into a war zone. It’s sickening how many people are killed in the name of “freedom,” since nobody has actually invaded the United States for far more than a century. We have not declared a single war since World War II, so I guess you can say that they are lucky to survive the “Police Actions” they have participated in overseas. I’m sure It’s the happiest day of a soldier’s life to get back home to their loved ones while the “unlucky” arrive back home in flag draped caskets, or not at all. Too many soldiers arrive back home severely affected by Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and feel guilty at their “luck” -coming home alive doesn’t always feel lucky, especially to know they survived when so many of their fellow soldiers are killed and will never come back to their families. It’s sickening to think that our society values the war business above all else, as witnessed by the largest single budget in the USA- our bloated, giant military budget. So many veterans get home and have serious health issues and aren’t getting the care and help they need while the fat cats laugh all the way to the bank. It’s disgusting to see how expendable we really are to the government, and how much money is going into the pockets of private corporations while they sit on their arses and collect the cash that the government has made available to people who unlike soldiers, will never fight a single day in their lives, and nor will their children ever offer their lives for these “wars.” President Eisenhower tried to warn the people about the infinite greed and influence of war profiteers, private parties who are in the business of making sure that our society will always have money for killing, and not for the necessities of civilization. It’s unbelievable how many different things we could spend the money used for war on- Healthcare for all for FREE, infrastructure improvement, and Education would be a great start instead of putting so much (borrowed) money away for overseas warfare in areas where we have established our presence and our soldiers. It’s unbelievable really, and if you are not American, I can imagine how you might wonder what exactly what it means to be “lucky in War.” Thanks for your service, Dave Miller. You are truly one of the lucky ones!

This song and album haunted and inspired me back in 2010 and it still does... Neil is as abstract and unique and full of wondrous feeling as a musician as David Lynch is as a creater of sound and visionary ethereal motion pictures... Champion Neil's music has gotten me through some lonely times in my life and been like a non judgemental friend to comfort me... The year that this song and album was released my true love was going through some very difficult, painful times and now that I found her by sharing the truth of John Taylor Gatto (about how our system is set up to oppress creativity often times) I found like this album was linking us together through time and space to connect our Nordline love... Neil, you are as fresh today as when you first amazed the world years ago in Canada. Whether it's Prairie Wind, Harvest, Massey Hall or Greendale, you have shown an incredible artistry that refuses to be classified, continues to change and hits the mark so poignantly. God Bless you Neil, and the muses who inspire you to bring the music out to the people.
Agree, but without his feedback on the electric we wouldn't have got the amazing "grunge" alternative music in the late eighties early nineties, godfather of grunge, king of feedback as a musical artform.

When I sing about love and war
I don't really know what I'm saying
I've been in love and I've seen a lot of war
Seen a lot of people praying
They pray to Allah and they prey to the lord
But mostly they pray about love and war
Pray about love and war
I've seen a lot of young men go to war
And leave a lot of young brides waiting
I've watched them try to explain it to their kids
And seen a lot of them failing
They tried to tell them and they tried to explain
Why daddy won't ever come home again.
Daddy won't ever come home again
I said a lot of things that I can't take back
But I don't really know if I want to
There've been songs about love
I sang songs about war
Since the backstreets of Toronto
I sang for justice and I hit a bad chord
But I still try to sing about love and war
Sing about love and war
The saddest thing in the whole wide world
Is to break the heart of your lover
I made a mistake and I did it again
And we struggled to recover
Then I sang in anger, hit another bad chord
But I still try to sing about love and war
I've been in love and I've seen a lot of war
Seen a lot of people praying
They pray to Allah and they prey to the lord
But mostly they pray about love and war
Pray about love and war.

That's Neil Young...........really great
Neil, you are as fresh today as when you first amazed the world years ago in Canada. Whether it's Prairie Wind, Harvest, Massey Hall or Greendale, you have shown an incredible artistry that refuses to be classified, continues to change and hits the mark so poignantly. God Bless you Neil, and the muses who inspire you to bring the music out to the people.
profound , the words , the delivery , but then its Neil Young , the best , . . .
Yep !
I think Neil is at his best when he does these acoustic folk songs, but his electric sound is also extremely awesome, don't get me wrong.
+Gaetano Novielli I know what you mean. Exactly. :-)
++1. I love this sound too. ;) play more pleassse!
Agree, but without his feedback on the electric we wouldn't have got the amazing "grunge" alternative music in the late eighties early nineties, godfather of grunge, king of feedback as a musical artform.
Gaetano Novielli Neil gets it on either way brother.
Yes he is better with acoustic guitar. Its more natural with is folk style.
one of the world's greatest guitar players
