- Sun Dolphin American 12 Pre-Mod Water Test
We took our plastic boat out to the lake to get an idea of how it handles on the water as it is from the store. A few things we are looking for is the stability of the boat, comfortability, ease of use and trailering and how well the Epropulsion Spirit 1.0 works on the transom.
This is all important to know before we begin the designing of the kit we plan to use in this boat.
It exceeded expectations in some ways and failed in others, but at the end of the day this boat allowed us to catch a few nice fish.
Please let us know in the comments what you would like to see us to do this Sun Dolphin American 12.

I can’t wait for the kit! My dad passed away in January and left me his sun dolphin I would love to turn it into a bass boat he would of loved it!
@benjaminmarcoux3073 I read your comment and I’m sorry to hear about your dad,I’m sure he’s with you every time you go out in your boat 🙏❤️
Its hilarious you put a trolling motor on it. When the main motor is just a trolling motor
I have the same boat I’m 13 years old but everything you went over i completely agree with and I live on a lake my cover is not good so to have a bilge pump with the kit would be a life saver
My wife just bought me one for Father's day, on clearance for 299.97 !!!! Can't wait to see what you come up with!!!!
Great deal.. what website or store?
@@chip23worldwide49 ,it was a Walmart in tazewell, Tennessee
I had two kids Standing up with me when casting the net, you must not have good balance. Cause those things are really well balanced for what they are and tough
We do not have good balance at all.
Can't wait to see what you guys do with this boat!
Thinking of getting the same boat and been watching diy videos on how to improve it. Can’t wait to see what you all come up with.
WE are excited about it too. Stay tuned, cool stuff coming
If you do the drop in deck sorta thing you should make a foot pedal design for consumer option, obviously it’s gonna reduce the amount space but you could either favor one side of the deck still squeezing a smaller dry hatch or center it and have two on each side. But I’m here for this I love the idea I was really hoping you kept it simple, win!
Super excited to see what you do with it! I bought the same boat in October of 2022 and pair it with a merc 5hp and love it! My wife and I take take this boat out pretty often on lakes and rivers around south Texas and it’s great for us two!
Heading to Port Aransas Texas in July to see how it handles in bays.
I have same boat, added expandacraft outrigger pontoons to extend deck. Super stable now.
Perfect, thank you
Do you have any pictures?
I just got one of these and plan to fit it out. Looks more stable than my gheenoe. I got it because of weight. It's the lightest thing out there that can handle an outboard. I have to load it on a pickup truck roof rack because I travel with a camping trailer. I'm anxious to see what you guys can do. I see several issues. How to make it drain front to back. How to attach cleats and rod holders. How to outfit with better seats.
Yup, all valid points. This boat is modifiable for sure
I like the simple idea that you have so far nice and simple quick build. But still keep the boat enjoyable
Thanks! Appreciate you watching
I have been looking at one of these for use on our local lake. One of my friends has one and the lack of water drainage was an issue for him as well. He did add some chairs which was an easy mod as there are wooden panels under the plastic benches. He has some drop-in wooden panels covered in rubber mat for the floor and a couple of wire trays to hold batteries front and back where they are connected to two trolling motors. I think he uses a 55 lb thrust motor at the back and a 30 lb or 35 lbs one at the front. And he also added a Scotty mount to the starboard bow for an anchor, and two Scotty rails on the gunwales at the back for a small GPS (he uses his ruggedized cell phone on this actually) and a kayak-type fish finder / transducer mount and small fish finder. I think the fish finder / transducer mount might have worked better up front and I think there's enough space for the rails there. He does use a small Load Rite trailer. I am really looking forward to this mod!
Thanks for watching. We are excited to keep working on this boat.
I really appreciate what you do. I can’t wait to see how you modify the SunDolphin American. I bought one recently and want to make some modifications too. I fish inshore in SoCal with it.
Yessir! Working on it now, new video will be up today
I'm ready for this kit. I bought that harbor freight trailer and that's what I use with my suv
Oh cool. Let us know how the trailer mod goes. We will probably be doing the same thing.
I have this boat and made a trailer for it from a Northern Tool Ironton 8' trailer, Harbor Freight was out at the time. I'm very excited to see what you do.
Very cool. We will probably build a trailer too.
I cant wait everything you said in the video is what I want done to mine
Cool, llooking forward to making dreams come true
Trailer definitely for me ( no truck) but I’m watching like you said trailer later👍
Spray foam the floor then hand plane it down to the ribs then cover with aluminum and and vinyl
Please revisit this and do the deck!
Really looking forward to following this build series. I'm modding my own SD American 12'. I'm thinking false floor inserts for the middle and front footwells. My issue is material for the base. Thinking 1/4" plywood, water proofed, and topped with EVA marine foam deck sheets. That way they're removable for draining or cleaning underneath. Maybe something that could be manufactured and sold in the kit?
That’s the plan
I look forward to everything your doing Ryan, and I remember the team using Gator Glide before,I don’t know if it works on plastic but it might be worth the investment seeing people dragging it in and out of the back of a truck 🤷
I have a 12 ft. sun dolphin. Im 68. Im not very ballanced any more. I came very close to falling out of the boat. Havent taken it out since.
I would love to see a side console set up
To clarify I have a bad back and sometimes have trouble with twisting to steer from the rear
this thing aint big enough for a side console.
Cut a horse stall rubber bed to fit flooring. Puts weight on bottom and makes it more stable
I see you fishing my spots! 😂
🤫
I have the same 12. I stand on the back chair to fish. I made a platform out of 3/4 inch plywood and placed inside the front area because those ribs are annoying and he was triping all over them.
Very cool. We are looking forward to building the decks for it.
im in the process of making an iceboat out of one of these with a 45 hp fan motor, hope it becomes the crazy carpet from hell!
Need a Kapten boat collar!
Do you have any idea when you will have the drop-in decks and flooring ready to show? I'm excited to see the finished product. If it's reasonably priced, I'm in...
They sell a clamp on foot controlled trolling motor
Do you have a link?
It's a motorguode bull dog
American and the intruder are the same thing??
- drop in floor for the middle section + hydroturf
Sit and fish doesn’t bother me, I’m older getting tired of launching and etc of my 16 ft semi vee. Lake close to house has HP limit looking for something like this.
New to the channel. Looking to find a 10 to 13 ft kayak/boat to fish. Stability is #1. Dont own a kayak or a trailer but will soon. Any reccomendations?
anything 48 inches or wider will be best for stability
I'm actually looking to get this boat as my first boat. Just something to take my 2 young sons on fishing adventures. I have a 6ft bed in my truck I was concerned about hauling it that way because I intend to get a motor with it. Any helpful tips?
I think it will be fine in a truck bed, thats how we tow it.
I bought a Polycraft Tufftender this year. Are you familiar with this boat? Would love to hear your thoughts about it. Thank you!
I will check it out
Do you have an idea when you'll be ready to display your mods? I am really interested in them. If their reasonably priced, I'm in... after all it's a fairly cheap boat. On a budget you know.
Hopefully within a month
How's the build going? When can we expect the finished product?
Going great! A little hiccup though…but a new video is rendering now and be live today!
I really need to know how fast this thing will go with a 6hp motor.
have not tried that yet.
Are you on Eagle Creek?
You need dollies on the back
I agree
I would say wonky. Oddly enough it's got some sort of stability. Better with motor in back when alone. Pushed through the water with ease.
It seems like a decent boat to fish out of for little ponds and stuff
Question, i have a plastic boat...how do you repair holes inside.and out on these. Is it doable? Bass hound for example
Depends on the hole
@@TBNationOutdoors ok. So do i send a pic?
Any update on the sundolphin
New video is loading now, will be live today
Was the boat any better instability with just one person?
Not really
How wide does a boat of this size need to be for it to be really stable
Not sure exactly, but you can tell a difference between a 36” and a 48”
@@TBNationOutdoors thanks!
any updates on the build?
Uploading a new video now as we speak
I would back my truck up to the edge of the water and put the boat in the water instead of dragging it 40 ft on the concrete
Did you give up on this boat lol see no revamp yet
Nope, got the lids today!
We have the 12’ field and stream sportsman. Looks identical. Curious which video was the latest one. Can’t find anything after the vid where you drilled all the holes. Pretty stoked about this build
There's no reason at all to stand up in that boat to go fishing get a nice chair to sit in and enjoy yourself you can stand up when you get out of the boat
Floor looks ridiculous. What on earth were they they thinking. Does not look for for bare feet.
the problem with this boat is its NOT SAFE FOR TALLER OR FAT PEOPLE TO BE IN, ITS VERY UNSTABLE ? the freeboard and the side rails are wide which is good, but it necks down to a SKINNY BOTTOM making it unstable> if the boat was the same width as the rails it would be a better stable boat, and the capcity isnt there either, 532#s cap. ? BETTER TO BUY A WIDE JON BOAT?
