Hi, I'd like to make a portfolio and improve my skill in drawing both with pencil and wacom... I want to be a concept artist but I don't know how to start I have to finish a school or just start drawing and make portfolio? If I watch all of your video is it enough for a start? I've been at it for 8yrs now, made a bit of pocket change commission here and there. It's so heart breaking to think I suck that much even after I graduated fine arts and years spend. I'm not capable of grinding like others, I quickly fall flat from grinding, and 10x more energy required to get back up.
But this 2023, I made a goal to complete 100 character sketch and turn it into a pdf sketchbook collection, Im currently at character no. 5, and planning on making simple content around this project. It really doesn't matter what content I make relating to the project at the moment. But I've started making short video, only made 1 for youtube yet, the rest are reels in instagram. I'm also not that smart, and not that great at art, so I will just look for people who are willing to support my work through growing my social media this year, and if it fails I might just quit art.
Trent you are one of my biggest inspiration (since 2015 the first vid I watched from you was kungfulio) and made me actually really believed that I could make it back in the day, but it's all on me for being sucky. I just hope things get better this year.

I know that feeling too. I started drawing pretty late, when I was 29. I have drawn almost religiously to try and make up time and it is insanely discouraging to see how much I need to grow. My art isn't bad per-say but I'm no master. After 4 years of self teaching the grind is getting noticeable.
I just watched your youtube short and you DO NOT SUCK. Maybe you are bad at marketing your skill set but that is not the same as you not having skill.

I struggle with a grindset mentality due to mental health. I've been working hard on my mental health and I've slowly been able to put more hours in a day without becoming emotionally fatigued. I like the work hard message in Trent's videos as a lot of artists need to hear it. But it is worth paying attention to what, precisely, stops you from meeting that work load. For me is was being hyper critical which just wore me out.

Trent, I don’t think I’ve ever commented on any RUclips video in my life. I spend most of my time working on my own artwork while listening to other artists talk or teach or chat, so I mostly lurk. I have decided to come out of lurking status to specifically let you know that I have been encouraged by your videos. I watched this one today and even as I clicked play, I was thinking in the back of my mind how sad it is that I haven’t set any art goals yet for this year or really wanted to think of it. Usually I am very excited to plan. I think I have just been beaten down to the point of not having any hope anymore about my career. I have pretty much decided that, after years of trying to improve my skills, I still must suck. I can only assume that my work isn’t professional enough or likable enough because I can’t get anywhere. I have two personal projects …a children’s book that I am nearly finished with and an illustrated chapter book that I really enjoy working on, but I’m not sure I can muster enough confidence to finish them. I know that sounds so lame, but I am 46 years old and have spent the past 10 years trying to improve my skills after I had an art degree from years before. I have to remind myself that I have been raising and homeschooling my four kids which is like 3 full time jobs I feel, but I still think I should see some signs that I am headed in the right direction and that is not what I am seeing. I used to have confidence, I have read every book about creativity and productivity I have listened to podasts, RUclips artists I admire, taken online classes from mentors, I have entered contests and failed over and over and over and I have tried to build up an instagram following only to get lower and lower and lower amounts of response even from my own friends and family. I guess I should take the hint and give up. The only thing that has given me an inkling of my old fire was this video today. I hope I can kindle it into a drive to try yet again.
Thanks for all you do. I appreciate it.

I went to college and got a different degree and well I am not in a job that requires that degree. Heck I am doing a job I was capable of while in college without a degree and getting paid peanuts. As an art director with my own design studio in the game industry who is regularly looking at artist portfolios I would say keep your portfolio to 5 pieces, 8 at the maximum. Art directors of very busy people and we don't have time to look over 10 or 15 pieces for every single artist we're considering. 3 to 5 pieces of killer art in your portfolio I think are just as effective as 10 or 15.

I also want to build a portfolio so that theyll accept me into a solid looking art school that I found. Im also planning to make an online comic or just some worldbuilding online about this universe and story I have in my head and I want to get things related to that in motion by the end of the year. Namely, applying and preparing for a booth at a smaller convention in my city to sell some merch and do some networking (really eager to explore this direction this year after I assisted another friend during their own booth session last year) and completing at least 1 short-story/short-page manga chapter until the end of the year. Goal one: start my journey on teaching myself art fundamentals, character and environmental design/concept art & then practising them. Practising my creativity. I've done a lot of research for this, but my fear of inadequacy, avoidance, and mental health struggles have made starting very daunting. I'm only partway through this video, but i find myself very grateful i stumbled upon it. Writing this down has helped reignite the ember that was my determination.
Goal two: I'm creating a homebrew dnd campaign at the moment based off a fantasy world I created for two of my original stories. I want to illustrate or at the very least do concept art for my designs. Environments/biomes, npcs, cities, objects/armour/weapons/clothing, mounts, magic, monsters/creatures, pets/familars, and my players characters. I'm aiming to have at least a few art pieces done of each category I just listed by the end of this year!

I currently work part time for an animation studio and part time as a freelance illustrator. My goals for the next two years are too broad and I need to narrow down, but at the moment I have three big ones:
    1. Improve my concept and environment art skills to make myself even more employable
    2. Become an exhibiting artist (traditional, non-digital art)
    3. Improve my story boarding skills for both comic book art and animation.

My goal this year is to go from a plain "concept artist" to a "good concept" artist, one that (indie) game studio's would like to hire. You once said that there are a lot of concept artists, but that there is a shortage of actual good ones. I want to level up my art rendering skills, and I want my concepts to be easy to read for 3D artists who have to work from them.
I signed up for an art mentorship, but I am also currently taking part in a 1-year challenge where I draw specific topics every month. All of these topics are focussing on improving my weaknesses and getting better at what I already do.

Art goals for 2023 for me are to step back more from taking on the one off commission and focus instead on my project and my skillset development such as textures, special effects and environments. I haven't had time between private commissions for the past like 2 years which means that I'm probably massively underpricing myself but I have a graphic novel I'm wanting to work on. I want to actually create a professional portfolio. I'm going to keep creating my merch and going to in person shows which I went to my first one last year and had a blast and did really well which leads to a more viable income and more passive income for me. I'm signed up for 3 more and have already done one for this year so that train is going strong. I'm also trying to get a better balance of my work/fun life balance. While I love creating art all the time I need to learn to step back and actually enjoy time that doesn't have to do with art.

But I also want to get a solid understanding of what makes a good character design so good, and the other way around. On top of that I want to learn how to draw/paint basic landscapes from reference photos, using correct perspective and knowing a bit better of what elements to use where
That is my general goal for 2023, I believe that I'll be able to achieve this if I put in the time and effort, as always great videos Trent!

I'm gonna start dedicating time to making characters and items that tell a story, not just studying and practicing like I have been. Im going to grow my portfolio and start adding custom characters and items from multiple perspectives that demonstrate story telling and consistency. Ive always wanted to be a concept artist but now I'm really starting to take it seriously and focus on the concept side rather than just art. I plan to make 3 characters a week that demonstrate my growth and storytelling while reinforcing the fundamentals

Hey there! In 2023 my goal is to find an internship/ job where I can apply the skills from college, mainly because I do miss the community that I had before and it motivated me to do better, grow as a person and do more work than I usually do on my own. If I don't get that opportunity than Ill continue with my longtime goal to also build a studio and RUclips channel to help other folks out like RUclips has done for me. Overall just focus on MAKING GOOD ART. I listened to the Neil Gaiman speech and overall it has helped me get out of the slump I was in. Finding exactly what I want to do in the workplace has been hard/ but I also found that not making a decision at all is also making a decision to hold yourself back. Therefore I will no longer to hold myself back work wise, bring the best I've got and niche down to focus on moving forward. On the other hand I will treat people like how I want to be treated, with kindness and respect; no longer making excuses for other people for their behavior and only move forward with individuals I can trust and same will of course apply to me. Maybe then, 2023 will not be as bad of a year as 2022 has been. Can't wait for the next video, thank you for reading if you read thus far you're awesome!

My personal main goal right now is creating some kind proper online presence/landing page that I can refer people to(I have a twitter but its super messy) with a website, proper email etc. and publishing some kind of finished artistic product. Right now that product is making a game since I'm also interested in programming but I could see this change over the year.
My Secondary goal would be to build a fanbase/art connections, probably through fanart since that seems like the easiest way to go (and I have a few IPs im passionate about).
As a sort of "dream" I think making an actual living off of my art either as a product of reaching those goals or even while working towards them could be neat but I'm kind of pulled more towards programming as an occupation right now so it's not a goal I HAVE to reach this year. I'll probably do some more thinking on this point during january and finalize my goals after that.

I find it so refreshing that you are using Sketchbook which is free. It this to show that you ain't a Adobe mindless fanboy. As Graphic designer that used PS 3.5 at work, in 2023 I don't understand why people think they have to use PS for illustrating and paying rent for it.
I want to transition to artist and graphic design but I have to bring $100k/annually to make that jump. Working for other people wouldn't bring me that so I'm thinking to do a channel of teaching drawing, but also illustrate children books myself and print on demand apparel related to the channel and books.
Also could you do a video tutorial of your process for Sketchbook illustrating? Have you tried Krita, Affinity Photo and Clip Studio Paint?

This will also help build a page that looks more cohesive.

I'm working on a project and do almost every art and UI for a mobile game, and it's my second job after 1,5y. of not-working. It was really hard time, so after getting this job I was just happy to make my own money and buy stuff. So today I realized (not for the first time, I knew it, but it's just hit me harder this time) that money it's the one thing that I'm thinking of. I don't even know if I wanna be an artist for a job, it's just barely one thing that I can do good and get paid for. I'm almost 25, and it's both so much and not - I have plenty of time, but plenty of time spend to just try smth.
Idk what do I want from my professional path and I don't know how to understand it, neither what do I want from my life except comfort and a puppy.
Just thank you, I'll try to figure it out somehow.

Hi, I taking your advice Mr. Kaniuga. So my art goals this year (a letter to myself). First just start drawing and post more. Stop trying to perfect a drawing and accept that I will have alot of bad drawing might as well get it out. And that it will improve overtime from learning from mistake and continue getting constructive criticism. Second start on progressing the comic I want to make, it will evolve overtime or it will fail, it may not be your magnum opus but might the stepping stone to it. Third when you get the money invest on equipment to make art prints, stickers and keychain. You've always wanted to sell at your art during the conventions you see online. Try it if you didn't make much profit. Think of what happened, why did you think they didn't sell well, was it the lack of marketing in social media.
