Well put together video! Your style is clean and informative. I have to agree, when I tell my students what concept art is, the answer has always been disappointing as it isn't always clear. I find myself saying "it depends on what you are doing". In the end, to be a good concept artist / designer, you need to be able to be a damn good draftsman, create ideas from imagination and communicate clearly. Let me know if you feel inclined to agree. Thanks for the video Antonio!
A concept art is something, which later becomes a real-life prop, a 3d model. Whereas an illustration is not that demanding in terms of form representation, clarity and construction. It can be flat, unrealistic, but emotional. Whereas a concept art should clearly convey how to build it
Yes.. and no, not exactly. Anything can become a 3d model, one can model after physical objects, illustrations and so on. If i need a barrel in my 3d scene, I’ll look up for a photo reference and copy whatever i see, it’s not a concept art, isn’t it? Concept = conceptual and it implies for an idea. Concept art is an idea represented in visual form. Not every drawing carries an idea. Most of drawings are just drawings, nothing else. Sure, you can model after any drawing, but it doesn’t mean it becomes a concept after the fact.
@@stout8529 A very comprehensive reflection on the topic! @@MIchaelSybiyup. One can hope that the new IP’s art is at least original looking. This is set up by the Art Director who sets the visual tone, visual style and the quality standard etc. However, coming up with something completely new and original is pretty much impossible task, so CA should come up at least with something that is distinguishable from other similar projects. CA often receives some technical notes or greybox level design screenshots for example to paint over (in games) or a location photo from a movie set. Get some directors notes what he wants to convey with the scene and CAs job is to convert the mental image, the initial idea to a real image and kickstart the visual production process. Also inspire the team with ideas (less talked topic). The drawing, that is considered a concept art for the project, is go-to image for different departments like modelling, texturing, shading, lighting, technical team (fx etc), and pretty much all the rest. So, if the director asks modelling team to start modelling without the concept, then modellers have literally no fkn idea what to model, what’s the style.. what the actual?? :) So, yeah.. it’s an idea, in the nutshell. Can AI do it? Well… AI gives you somebody else’s idea and you either go with it or roll the dices again until you are somewhat happy and then try to be lucky next time, cause the style and the language has to remain consistent. That’s really hard to achieve with the AI. At least within the larger scale projects. Ups, long reply. Interesting topic, tho.

Very good video nice points.
