    My gramma taught me about "matching", lol...I was happy, and it made sense. Sometimes I'll rebel, and wear pink and red together, but I see the sense in what my gramma taught me.
    I know about shoeing horses. Thats about the only thing my aunt actually paid for, with her horses. When as an adult I worked on an Arab horse farm, I held the horses for the farrier. I can calm animals down.

    Eli I have to agree with this practice. Many years ago the elderly were cared for at home until it was beyond the ability of the caregivers. The thing is, that before they got to that point, they could "Police," the community. They watched over the welfare of everyone's children this pertained to not only the Amish, but to other people who were and are definitely not Amish, but either way, it gave value to the elderly. Now out here, we put them in big concrete boxes, the kids hear from mom and dad, how much they hate visiting Grandma and or Grandma and the kids learn to ignore their Grandparents. That and with both parents working out there, it becomes harder to take care of elderly folks.

    Eli, I enjoy your talks so much that I'm not even done with this video yet but I had to say something...yup, I bought a cheap little car back in the 70's (I'm 65) for $350. Well that thing had a stick shift too and people said they could teach me...but they couldn't. So I sold it. I have never been able to drive a stick. So I can totally relate to you. Now back to your video which I am totally enjoying. I could listen to you all day. You are such a pleasant person.👍

    My grandfather was a baptist preacher, but I am an atheist. What I enjoy about you Eli preaching about Jesus and His teachings is you have embraced all the goodness in the scripture, and pushed aside what you see as hypocritical to Jesus's teachings. As an atheist, I love Jesus Christ. He was, and no one can argue this, at the very least one of humanity's greatest teachers and leaders. Thank you, Eil, for your testimony and the education about your people. You are wonderful.

      I know how religion can effect you but believe Jesus is the son of God and he died for you. I too have been taught things that have effected me. I don't go to church because of the things I saw and experienced. But I know Jesus and have a relationship with him. I believe in Gods grace because that is the only way that any of us will be forgiven. Anyone that thinks they will make it to heaven by their works alone will not. If we say we have no sin we are a lier and the truth is not in us.

    In college, I was a CNA in nursing homes. The largest problem they face is being short-staffed. The residents don't always get the care they deserve because the staff simply doesn't have the time. 30 years ago, we were told that the best aide-to-resident ratio was 1 to 12. I never had fewer than 24 residents.

    For my mother we built a new house that had a basement apartment with very wide doors,she had her own kitchen, living room with fireplace, large bedroom with a large walk in shower that the door was also wide. This basement has a back porch. We did all this so she was under our roof but she had her own space. We had a stair lift so she could ride upstairs to eat with us or I would bring it down to her. Sometimes she cook her own meals. Saying all this I was blessed to have her living with me. It is so sad to see people dumping their family off in old folks home and never visiting them. I grew up to take care of family. Sadly she passed away last August. But her grandson my nephew is now living in her apartment. So saying all this you might not be able to afford to build all we did for my mom but you can clear out a bedroom. Love your parents as they loved you.

My grandmother isn't doing too good with a walker. Before my grandpa passed I wiped nuts and butts for a full year. Now my wife has moved in here at my grandparents to help take care of grandma and wipe and clean her in the bathroom because I can't do that as a male. But I do everything else with the bed made and helping her walk and meals cooked and helping her sit down and putting TV shows on keeping her entertained it's unappreciated job my friend. But it's still not to love and I appreciate the way that you feel about us caretakers that means a lot to me to hear you say those kind words ttys may the Lord Jesus Christ bless you my brother

    Eli, I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed this video about so many topics! You covered each one well and many were humorous, yet you were serious when you should have been. You told about situations in your young life that were so interesting, and also about situations that took place after you left the only life you had known! These were surely difficult times for you because you were fully grown when you switched! That meant you had to switch and change most things you had known how to do in your early years!
    Your work, choosing the right car for yourself, (one without a clutch!) and learning how to drive were big changes for you! Now you are driving a “big rig”! I admire your sense of humor above all, as it is a means of making others feel comfortable and you certainly have a wonderful personality! You can call me Grandma because I will be eighty years old in less than two years! I worked with kids for thirty years and really enjoyed that. I also had my own two children and now I have two grandsons! I baby sat with them after I retired. My husband passed away almost two years ago.
    Keep up your ways of also staying in touch with people, as your ministry. You talk with people who need to unload their burdens with you on line and I have sometimes listened to those. I know they felt better after being able to express their fears. Thank you for everything you do for others! God bless you, your wife, and son. 🙏

I know this is an older video and all, just wanted to add that I am so happy for you. You have made a good and decent life for you and your beautiful family, Eli. You have been truly blessed, but you know that. Thank you for helping so many of your fellow Amish people when they decide to leave their communities. That's something you have every right to be proud of, too. There's so many lives you have helped. Again, I'm not a faith-based person, but I have a ton of respect for the lessons every religion has for us, to help us. You bring to mind one of my favorite quotes from any holy book: “Whoever saves one life saves the world entire.” I hope you really do understand howmuch good you have done, the full perspective. Thank you, Eli.

    The dresses on infants is a German thing. My Father wore them as an infant.

  • @carl4323
    @carl4323 Год назад +1

    I liked your story about the infant's dressing gown, and how you didn't want to wear pants. The reason you said was you didn't want to change. Change creates instability So you see all of us; English or Amish, are pretty much the same. We all want stability and security. Forgive me if this isn't right; but I would think that your mom may have lost her stability when your father drank. And then she may have turned to her faith in the church to find stability again. And I can only imagine that your father was made more unstable by the way the church treated him. I think that what makes a marriage work is when the husband and wife form a team together against the world. Their faith and support of each other should be more important than anything that is in the church.

    @Machoke. Год назад +1

    I will say from working in a nursing home it’s not always the mindset of the workers. Note I said not always, sometimes it is, and that’s a shame. The staffing situation in a lot of these places is absurd. One time I was put in charge of 28 patients as a CNA. That means 28 people who the majority of can’t bath themselves, won’t brush their own teeth, a lot are confused, can’t feed themselves, can’t take themselves to the bathroom. Of course I fell short that day of the care they needed. You’re moral in that situation is so low. Your tasked with taking care of peoples loved ones, and they make it literally impossible sometimes to do the job proper. Not every day was that bad, but my dad always said you can put in a 2 week notice or a 2 day notice. I said what’s a 2 day notice. He said that means you quit today, and that’s what I did. I told my boss that I was putting in my 2 day notice. She said what’s that mean, I told her it means I quit today. I said I’d finish my day, but I won’t be back tomorrow. I got a job on a Covid unit at another home that was a lot better, but man some of them can be bad. If you see almost no staff walking around in a nursing home big red flag right there

It was simply more practical if all the young people wore the same outfit, because then you could exchange these little skirts in the family and in the village, the age and sex of the little ones didn't matter. These fabrics were extraordinarily durable,

    I can understand the Santa thing to an extent....my oldest was more engrossed in the Santa traditions but with all of my girls, the more I hear "oh he knows everything I do AND he judges whether I'm naughty or nice?" the more I think the true "belief" in Santa the more I think it's not a good idea. My kids (youngest included) now Know that Santa is a reprentation of the holiday spirit rather than believing him to be real. Christmas is incredible, we celebrate amazing act of God, but I think Santa overshadows a bit and when they stop believing in Santa, there is a good chance they will start questioning God. That worries me. I'm in no way saying someone is bad for doing things differently but I truly believe I made a mistake in the way I portrayed Santa.

    Dressing up all little children in dresses is a tradition in most Germanic cultures going back a long time, up until relatively recently - it mainly went away due to discrimination against Germans during WWI in the USA.

    Why is your wedding band on your right hand and not on your left hand? When the English marry it goes on the left hand ring finger.

    You say the youngest son. If there is a family with only daughters does the youngest daughter and her husband take that responsibility or how does that work.

    Clothes not matching I think is a man thing I’d say. Women care more about that than we do.

    Do they not understand that NOWHERE in the Bible does it say men have to have a beard??? Or that women don't have to wear head coverings because our hair is our covering??? And what gives the church the authority to rule your lives in the Amish Community??? NOBODY WOULD EVER TELL ME I COULD NEVER SEE MY PARENTS AGAIN JUST. BECAUSE I DON'T WANT TO BE AMISH!!! It seems more like an occult community than a religious community.

    Jesus was born September 11, three BC. All our holidays besides Easter are Pagan or satanic holidays. Especially Christmas (PAGAN) - they name them after God to mock him.

    You know, after thinking about it, why is Santa clause getting all the praise? That day is all about Jesus, and I can understand what your mom is saying. When it’s broke down to me like that, in my own personal opinion, Santa isn’t the good guy here. I never respected the fat man anyway lol
