But then unfortunately the Penders-pocolypse happened and everything he had been building to had to get flushed down the toilet, never to be seen again.

@@FantasticSamtastic Tbh Sonic has always been Shonen from the beginning. Although this adaptation was done by American comic artists, I could say they stayed true to the original ;)
I'm still convinced that issue 247 where the genesis wave went off is the end of the story and what happened after just the echoes of the archie canon ripped apart I still wonder what could of been / sonic online isn't easy to access or navigate plus it doesn't have the same narrative structure but still at least it's trying to keep the spirit of the comic alive
I really at some point need to get around to reading the online fan continuation. I've been diving a bit more into post genesis wave and also the IDW stuff but tbh it is a bit hard sometimes when I think about Archie Sonic at it's peak and just how big and involved the world was.
@Fantastic Samtastic well it's hard to move away from Archie sonic it was and still is a living world with plenty to offer after better writers took over the story process and making the weird good and interesting fixing up the lore in away practically its own marvel universe and sure some of the writers have moved to idw sonic but to recreate that level of living world is still going to take time and alot of building up the story so it all doesn't sound like exposition but I guess one step at a time plus you can read Archie sonic whenever online so nothings really lost plus the fan movie sonic villains looks like it's going to be really fun
Fucking thanks Penders, way to kill the arch. In all seriousness I would have loved to see Sally get her free will back and have to cope with being a living weapon and come to terms with what she had done under Eggman's control.
Dam, it was heading towards a epic conclusion before external factors happened. I really wished that Comic Book Artists understood that when they work on a epic franchise that is owned by a different company, they should keep their mouths shut and realize that it's the original Company that keep their IP and the characters created around them. Artists need to understand that a Team is greater than the Individual even though it is sometimes hard for those with big egos to understand this.
It really is a shame when someone's ego blinds them and they wind up destroying their own legacy. Penders would have been much better remembered if not for the drama he caused
@@FantasticSamtastic True. If Penders didn't do that Copyright IP stuff with his own characters, he would have been remembered for drawing some Furry characters but nothing else. Sure it may be strange for some but at least he was doing it out of love for the characters. But after he left Arche and years later decided to go on a Copyright Claim lawsuit against Arche, he really ruined it all for the fans who wanted to see the conclusion to this Metal Sally arc.
Your videos are some of the best ones I've watched explaining the Sonic comics; I used to read them a lot as a kid, but I forgot SO much of this stuff ever happened, so these videos feel like such a wild ride haha. Great job!
Honestly, I'm pretty happy with how the comics wrapped up. It just feels like everything is finally coming full circle with the Sonic universe. Plus, each new game or series gives us a chance to explore the characters in a fresh way. And you never know when someone's memories might get wiped and new characters and plotlines get introduced. I'm anticipating seeing Sally return to her OG form, too, in the near future of the franchise, whenever that will be. That should be pretty sweet! When I saw Sonic acting like that in this arc, I was totally taken aback. I mean, who would have thought that he'd be cool with death threats and the harshness against his own friends/counterparts? It seemed like all the stress and frustration he'd been dealing with had finally gotten to him, and he just didn't care anymore. But then something changed. Sonic started thinking about things differently and became a more mature hedgehog. He still goes with the flow, but now he actually thinks about what he's doing and how it might affect others. (P.S. The Sonic Prime series is doing some kind of reset thing, so this doesn't really apply to that.) So, I was totally engrossed in this Sonic comic (And in the overall franchise), and I couldn't help but notice something cool. Sonic's character always seems to evolve as he learns to trust and work with his friends. And not only that, but his friends also grow and become more independent. It's like they're all equals in this hero business. Pretty neat. Anyways that's my two cents on this. :P
Although I don't love how abruptly it ended I am glad that Mecha Sally ended because man it was getting long. It could be interesting to see how it's handled if and when Sally and company ever get brought over to IDW. Although a part of me worries that they won't bring them over due to the baggage attached to them.
Hey could you discuss the inconsistent story of the Chaos Emeralds? How it was very consistent until Penders made up an origin that makes no sense, being radiated gems???
@@FantasticSamtastic thank you, seriously not many people discuss the chaos emeralds origin in the comics, or how Penders didn't bother to read anyone else's stories and be consistent and he expects others to not mess with his territory
sonic and sally will always be the best couple and honestly this arc makes their relationship that much stronger, it gives the audience a good perspective of how in love they are. man i miss the archie comics
Screw SEGA for betraying their fans! There is no other words for it and they LITERALLY blueballed the fans of the by preventing the ending of the saga and heart wrenching reunion of Sonic and Sally. It was literally meant to happen the following issue, but they stabbed their fans in the back with that infamous reboot, and butchered the few characters we had left!
@@FantasticSamtastic I had the first issue. And I owned it for years. Kept it nice. And now I'm so pissed because it was stolen from me. But yeah. I liked the entire Archie Sonic run.
I never grew up with the Archie comics, but I recently have been looking into them through video essays such as this one. From what I understand, the Archie comics were forced to reboot so much due to Ken Penders and his lawsuits against Archie and SEGA. This would also lead to the comics eventual demise as the licensing deal between Archie and SEGA would end with SEGA wanting to move on from this fiasco and start over with the IDW Comic series.
Honestly, Archie can be really interesting to look into and it's a real shame that it ended up going the way it did. Even though IDW seems to have a bit less creative freedom, I think they've been really interesting and very good at keeping the spirit of Archie
Technically there is a comic where Sonic and the others derobobticize sally in the nick of time ( cuz metal made mecha sally self destruct) then theres the fact the ixis takes over st. John's body and tires " tries" to take over the city but its never continued after that because it automatically changes to the new universe where sally is better and has blade rings.
4:00 Bunny wouldn’t just “die”. Her lower half is robot. What I’m pointing out here is that if her lower half exploding does not kill her out right. Then she will suffer before death… dark.
I really dislike how the reboot just sweeps “Preboot” under the rug. Instead of doing something with it. If they go out of their way to have the characters still remember Preboot, that should have more of an effect on the story. Like maybe Sally struggles being a Freedom Fighter or suffers from PTSD. It would’ve been better if they just stopped Preboot and just completely rebooted Archie without anything from Preboot. Think of how we went to IDW with a continuity that has no relation to Archie. Instead of using a crossover with Megaman to create a new continuity, and slap in the fact that the Freedom Fighters, Naugus, Eggman, Orbot & Cubot still remembers Preboot, just to sweep it under the rug until they want to mention it. But yet, they still keep it under said rug until the second crossover.
Sucks that Dulcy lost a lot of screen time over the years and even with the Genesis Wave they decided to redesign her instead of keeping her natural look.
@@DamienOnTheWeb yeah, just like I thought. So it was Ben Bates who did that panel. One of the best artists of Archie Sonic modern era, his art is even better than Tracy Yardley's imo. Unfortunately after the Mega Man crossover he stopped doing pencils for the issues and limited himself to making covers.
@@DipperPines1986 Honestly I probably would too after that 2-page art spread of almost *every* robot master PLUS a handful of sonic characters Which Ian's admitted got him a lot of dirty looks from the art department 😂

I really liked this video, and the way how you do your other videos, they are really cool, but if you want to see mecha Sally story concluded read archie sonic online! I think someone on the comment srction said that too, do you think you can make a video about it sometime?

The best thing about this arc was seeing Mecha Sonic V.1 again. And yes it isn’t silver sonic, silver sonic is the small little robot that appeared in those other sonic games back then, and then after mania.
Archie has always been weird with a lot of the naming when it comes to bots. That's Silver Sonic in Archie, and Mecha Character's are usually roboticized characters in Archie
Isn't it funny how metal Sally and Metal Tails look more like the OGs than metal Sonic and metal knuckle, (Sonic has green eyes and Metal Sonic has red, and Knuckles has purple eyes and metal knuckles had green), Oh and Metal Amy looks like Amy in a way as well so I’m confused on why Eggman doesn’t even know Sonics eye color but he knows tails, *Sees Metal Blaze* Oh god damn it whats next metal Silver with blue eyes, Metal shadow looks ok
@@FantasticSamtastic I know right, Eggman has known Sonic since the early 90s and still can’t get his eyes right after fixing and upgrading Metal he still can’t get the eyes right, Why make a robot form of someone if you can't even get the details right
You're right! Well kinda right, I don't think Silver killed her as much as he just fried her but considering that the genesis wave was happening I didn't want to spend more time talking about Silver's long story in an already long video. At one point I'll get to Silver and probably go on that
@@FantasticSamtastic lol true, it was a very long arc. I have 2 issues of the silver saga sonic universe and then got a comic book that kinda summed up everything that lead to the genesis wave, so that’s how I found out about how it happened. Course now I found out Archie no longer makes sonic comics and for some reason I can’t find idw comics anywhere expect Amazon but only a few. Which sucks.
Something that always bothered me was in Issue 235 when Tails breaks down over losing someone "close to him". That someone is Antoine. I'm not saying that Tails has no right to be sad about Antoine, but if you read the comics, Tails crying over Antoine's potential loss doesn't make sense. In the comics, Tails and Antoine barely interact with each other. Tails was the usher at Antoine and Bunnie's wedding and he took them to their honeymoon. That's it. You'd think that Tails would be more upset that Sally was roboticised and being used against them.
Dr. Eggman in other terms is like Rick Sanchez, before Rick Sanchez was conceived as an idea by Justin Roiland. That's my conclusion with Eggman in any different variations of him.
Awesome job with this narration! You make me wish we had these easily accessible in Italy back when Archie was still the publisher. It's a bit of a bummer that I was getting invested until you mentioned the Cursed Ekidna Man and I knew stuff was gonna end in the reboot. I'd like to ask one thing as bluntly as possible: did Sonic had multiple girlfriends at the same time? At the beginning we can see him and Sally share a kiss, but a couple of volumes later he's holding hand with Amy with little hearts floating around. Also, leaving the worst for last... Robot Furry Girl with Black Sclera Eyes? This is scarily targeting me at a personal level. 😅
I'm so glad to hear you liked it 💖! Sonic has had other romantic partners through the run of the comic, although too my knowledge I don't think he's ever been with Amy. Maybe one day I could do a short on Sonic's partners and crushes lol I'll try not to target you too much with robotic furry comparisons 😜
I think what hurts the most is that this arc *was* supposed to be capped off with the original plans for issue 250. We were *3* issues away from the conclusion! Fucking Penders.
@@FantasticSamtastic At least the fans have got some neat continuations. ASO, Retold, and a more recent one with Rediscovered Frontiers (where the SGW leads to IDW but preboot stuff sticks around).
Most likely they would have found a way to restore her free will at a steep coast, induce some severe phycological trauma (most likely from her almost killing sonic), fumble around with her coming to terms with being a living weapon and all that she did under Eggman's control, before finding some sort of McGuffin to restore her to flesh and blood.
@@FantasticSamtastic yes I have read be either watching dubs of it one RUclips or searching archie sonic online and clicking the website link. They currently up to issue 252

I wish the Mecha Sonic arc was as long as this. Since they did that in 1996, they were not ready for something so dark for too long. Mecha Madness was only 3 isuess. I loved Sonic's Mecha form.
Question. I remember this particular Dr. Eggman being Robo Robotnik. Wouldn't the robotizer screw up his body in some way or explode. Also Sonic is also normal afterwards too. I know this was a skim read so there might have been some details left out, but I'm all ears for any answers to this.
Yeah you are right about Eggman in this area. It's been a hot minute since I read this issue but the gist of it is that with Sally reversing things the blast would more or less be focused on where she was underneath Sonic and Eggman which is why she got turned and no one else got effected. It was like sacrificing herself to save everyone else.
To add to this the aliens the Bem I believe de robotized all Mobians except Jules cuz the damage he suffered was too great and he would have died, so robo robotnick in his mark2 or what ever number body it was made human again in that form it was right around the time we got meet Tails' parents issues #170 ish it's been so long since I've read them I miss these comics
@@FantasticSamtastic I agree with you, but who knows maybe one day he will look back and realize how foolish that he was. I know I shouldn't be hoping for Ken Penders to change, but it does happen. I mean look at Ultimate Warrior for example, he burnt Vince McMahon many times and before he died both him and Vince made Peace.
So basically, Sally had the blast pinpointed exactly on her which overloaded the systems but also meant that only she would be within range. It's a little silly lol
Lol yeah it's unfortunate that it just abruptly stopped. I'm kinda in a similar boat where I thought I missed something when Sally was just magically fine with no explanation
uhm well not to be that person but the slide music plays during the collapse of the death egg, I chose it because it's kinda chaotic but also upbeat because at this moment everything around Sonic & Eggman is collapsing and Sonic believes they won. When Mecha Sally shows up the song changes to what I'm pretty sure is a theme from one of the mega man stages but I can't remember 100% where that one is from.
@@FantasticSamtastic I guess the started with the same first episode, and as you say, went their own way. By the way did Archie buy the rights to make their own version?
Archie Sonic used Sonic SatAM as its base, trying to combine it with the other Sonic cartoon in terms of humor. As time passed, both cartoons ended, but the comics kept going. Just like other Bronze Age titles, the story got darker and exponentially expanded into its own thing while also adding the games' stories here as nods to the series' source materials.
@@FantasticSamtastic Is there a Japanese version of the documented mandates? Are they just piecemeal things that have accumulated? Is it Sega of America's Doing. Lmao, that "rumor" sounds like something upset Archie fans would say, Sega is a different company than it was 20 years ago, i feel like its a lot more likely that Sega doesnt want these old characters to show up instead of Ian simply not liking them, the sonic fanbase needs to understand that Sega has very clearly been trying to streamline the franchise, hell just look at Boom, Sega doesnt want all the baggage that comes with Sonics long history and is clearly trying to ignore it for the most part (outside of like twitter/their RUclips channel where they sometimes address the stuff we all go insane about, like the two worlds or one world debate and such)

Sally is not even a confirmed character under sega lmao

I wonder if Rusty Rose's story/character in Sonic Prime took inspiration from this concept in the Archie comics
It would be really cool if they did!
as i said in another video talkin the same: "They literally lost by the plot"
The Freedom Fighters lost that one truly because the entire thing end up in a soft reboot due the Penders Drama. A lot of things were left out as well.
Yeah I could only cover so much in the amount of time I had but it is really a shame that this story kinda shoved everything to the side for so long
@@FantasticSamtastic its fine, this video is come concise about it this arc instead.
I wonder how things would’ve gone if Penders didn’t keep giving us reasons to be incredibly annoyed with him
I know right? Things would probably would have gone a lot smoother with Archie and Ken would probably be able to live a chill life working on his questionable comic but without any hate.
I know right.
I remember hanging around Ian Flynn's personal online forum when this arc was going down, and he definitely had some long term plan's for this arc, including bringing Antoine out of his coma. But then unfortunately the Penders-pocolypse happened and everything he had been building to had to get flushed down the toilet, never to be seen again.
I didn't even know these Sonic comics even existed until after Sally was roboticized. Man, I had a lot to catch up on.

It would be funny if the Sonic Off Panel for this issue, had Sonic either land safely on the ground because there’s no fall damage in Sonic games. Or he just loses his rings upon impact. And is perfectly fine.

Oh no skip the climax add more Filler!
It's like Shonen anime meets Sonic 😜

@@madzman7214 The comment had "could of," a malapropism for 'could've' (could have).
Fucking thanks Penders, way to kill the arch. In all seriousness I would have loved to see Sally get her free will back and have to cope with being a living weapon and come to terms with what she had done under Eggman's control.
It really it a bummer that Ken killed this project right in its tracks over his own vanity
Great job!
Thanks so much I really appreciate it 💖. This has been a fun way for me to look into my childhood and share it with others!
(P.S. The Sonic Prime series is doing some kind of reset thing, so this doesn't really apply to that.)
So, I was totally engrossed in this Sonic comic (And in the overall franchise), and I couldn't help but notice something cool.
Nice review
Thank you! Cheers!

sonic and sally will always be the best couple and honestly this arc makes their relationship that much stronger, it gives the audience a good perspective of how in love they are. man i miss the archie comics
The Archie comics really did do a good job at making relationships between characters feel real. It's a shame we never got to see the end of this
Screw SEGA for betraying their fans!
Its a real shame that all that Penders drama happened when it did

Ooooh ixis naugus, that's another good one. Also, he's technically a chimeric as he's a cross between a bat, a rhino, and a crab/lobster.
Yeah but the bat joke was funny lol.
People just don't know how good this comic was.
It was absolutely wild when it first started!
@@FantasticSamtastic I had the first issue. And I owned it for years. Kept it nice. And now I'm so pissed because it was stolen from me. But yeah. I liked the entire Archie Sonic run.
Hell, it was able to last me through an 8 month deployment.
💯

Bunny wouldn’t just “die”. Her lower half is robot. What I’m pointing out here is that if her lower half exploding does not kill her out right. Then she will suffer before death… dark.
14:27 mercenary: EGGMAN!!!!! WHAT THE DID YOU DO?! YOU NO GOOD FOOL!!
This was Eggman's biggest victory!
Go ken penders , this is why we can't have nice things
Sadly true
It is too bad, I get why they did it, but it would have been nice to see some better flow.
Sucks that Dulcy lost a lot of screen time over the years and even with the Genesis Wave they decided to redesign her instead of keeping her natural look.
Ngl I was never super crazy about her pre or post genesis wave. But, it is a shame for people who liked her that she was sidelined so hard.
Ducky did some cameos during Bunnie & Antoine's wedding, and when the gang were freeing everyone from the egg grapes in the next few issues.
That Mecha Sally panel looks great! GG to that artist
Late Archie Sonic had some really decent art. Tracy Yardley did some really fantastic work although idk if he did that panel

Sad thing is, this was the last time Sonic and Sally were ever romantically involved.
It's not necessarily the last ark because we also got extinction of a species in between
That's fair yeah. This to me just felt more major and I think it caused everything to get pushed back from my brain lol
There were a few questionable writing decisions made in Archie lol
Dr. Eggman in other terms is like Rick Sanchez, before Rick Sanchez was conceived as an idea by Justin Roiland. That's my conclusion with Eggman in any different variations of him.
lol thats a fun way to look at it
Awesome job with this narration!
Maybe one day I could do a short on Sonic's partners and crushes lol

@@FantasticSamtastic Nah don't worry, it's the artist fault, a Messanger bears no ill. 😂

Why did Sally acorn have to sacrifice herself? 😭 😭😭
I wonder what the arc could have been if Ken didn't screw over the comics.
I sometimes wonder if Archie would have given up Sonic if not for the Ken drama
Most likely they would have found a way to restore her free will at a steep coast, induce some severe phycological trauma (most likely from her almost killing sonic), fumble around with her coming to terms with being a living weapon and all that she did under Eggman's control, before finding some sort of McGuffin to restore her to flesh and blood.

Archie Sonic #231
Why did the Mario 64 slide theme start playing as sally is robotisized? Really couldn’t find anything kore fitting?
uhm well not to be that person but the slide music plays during the collapse of the death egg, I chose it because it's kinda chaotic but also upbeat because at this moment everything around Sonic & Eggman is collapsing and Sonic believes they won. When Mecha Sally shows up the song changes to what I'm pretty sure is a theme from one of the mega man stages but I can't remember 100% where that one is from.
@@FantasticSamtastic Reading the reasoning for it there it does make sense, it does fit both themes.
I need the music list for the video
it's not the same version as the Sonic Sat?
Kinda but not really, the Archie comics are kinda based in a similar foundation as SatAM but they totally went their own way
@@FantasticSamtastic I guess the started with the same first episode, and as you say, went their own way.
I don't know what it is but there's something about Archie's Sonic that IDW didn't managed to replicate
There is something interesting by the amount of freedom they had in Archie
Has anyone else heard the rumors ian made up the mandates?
That is news to me but idk sounds a lot like somethign SEGA would do
@@FantasticSamtastic Is there a Japanese version of the documented mandates? Are they just piecemeal things that have accumulated? Is it Sega of America's Doing. I guess my concern boils down to whether Ian's interests are sincere and exhausted or insincere and gaslighting.
