  • @JTsBuildsandFields

    Man I have to say I love your respect for these bullnose trucks. I absolutely love idi trucks. I don’t care if they’re NA or turbo. I have one of each and I love them both. One of mine has the ats turbo kit and it has new injectors and a newer a newer Injection pump and it will go pretty fast (it still has the 4 speed). I love the bullnose trucks, they’re so simple to work on, such a beautiful body style and they’re even better when you hear the rattle of a 6.9. So thankyou for bringing attention to these trucks because I thing the idi diesels are a very “forgotten” era of pickup trucks. They are very underrated and people don’t have respect for the old iron, you gotta think these are the vehicles that helped build America so we gotta keep ‘em alive for as long as we can, not to mention they’re just badass

    • @AtomsForFuel
      @AtomsForFuel Год назад

      Man that’s awesome and well said. I have an 86 F259 with an 89 7.3 n/a swapped in. I hope that in the next 2-5 years that I’ll have a turbo kit, zf5 or zf6, and a couple of other odds and ends to go along with those upgrades (like another filter along the rail, an electric pump+regulator, an intercooler, a 90cc injector pump and the proper injectors.
      Realistically it’ll still be an n/a 7.3 with a C6 but at least I plan on working it

    • @AtomsForFuel
      @AtomsForFuel Год назад +3

      But yes like you I think these particular diesels (maybe not so much the body style) are under appreciated and to many people are overshadowed by the more modern diesels. Just look at the machine shops and mechanic shops that won’t touch this motor because because of how unfamiliar they are.
      It really is up to us to keep them going. The 6.9/7.3IDI may not be the most powerful but the international harvester adds a cult member every time a new person purchases and drives one of these.

    • @JTsBuildsandFields
      @JTsBuildsandFields Год назад +4

      @@AtomsForFuel haha I liked the way you said it adds a new cult member lol, but you’re right, most people when they get these trucks they fall in love with them, I’m a very mechanically inclined person and I love the trucks because of how easy they are to work on, anything that is an all mechanical engine is great in my opinion because there’s no electronics to fail on you, and plus the styling is amazing

    Banks has a great reputation, both the man himself and his company. For what you get, I think that $3500 is more than reasonable.

      If you’ve ever had the pleasure of installing one of these kits it is an absolute pain in the ass and nothing fits how it’s supposed to and they will tell you that you will have to cut and modify almost every part

  • @minnesotatomcat
    @minnesotatomcat Год назад +23

    $3,500 is a pretty reasonable price for a well thought out kit like that, at least you know everything is gonna fit and work . Time is money and if you’re ordering everything separately and modifying stuff to make it work you’re gonna have a pile of hours into a project like that.

    I'm brand new to the IDI world. But I love it already. I just picked up a pretty clean 7.3 IDI 1989 F-350 with manual stock trans. I suspect I'd need to do a ZF-5 swap to really enjoy the turbo? Or would I find it worth the investment without doing that? I get that's a really subjective question, and I welcome others to comment. I'd just hate to put that $ to it and end up going well I'm not sure that was worth the hassle and the money.

    • @hodsonmotors

      The turbo will be most enjoyable in 4th gear, (1:1 ratio) regardless of transmission. However, doing a ZF5 swap will make the whole truck more enjoyable as you'll be able to do highway speeds.

    The whole thing about the V8 diesel versus the 6 cylinder Cummins diesel is the application of what you're going to do with the truck, the Cummins diesel is going to haul a heck of a lot of weight efficiently but you're not going to get much speed out of it a V8 diesel is more for moderate weight and more highway travel.

      I can't say I agree. When I had my 90 IDI, injectors were 20 bucks a piece on eBay, and they hardly ever died but I replaced them as part of an entire fuel system refresh (prior owner let the truck sit for years) and the glow plugs came as a kit for about 50 bucks on a bad day through AutoZone. Now might be different than 10 years ago when I had mine but it can't be that different. The only real drawback of the idi is air. There's always an air leak somewhere in the fuel system that makes it run like crap if at all.
